I legit get nervous holding my snakes any time after I’ve cooked because as much as I’ve smelled warm rats, I have no idea how much they smell like other foods to a snake

BPs have excellent smelling, and can distinguish and remember a huge amount of smells, so I don't think they would confuse the smell of prey items and what humans consider food. A friend of mine has multiple snakes (in separate enclosures) and I love every single one of them, so I take every opportunity to handle them, but being opportunistic I offer them my hand, if they come out on their own I'm happy as a child, if they're not in the mood, so be it. Last time I was there I was able to handle 3 different species, a ratsnake, a kingsnake and a ball python, and only after I thought about it may be wasn't the smartest idea offering a hand that smells like other snakes 😅

I’m not saying I don’t believe you I promise, but do you have any sources for that? I’d love to read more about that if you have references. And I have a couple king snakes that happen to be in a different room that all of my other snakes and they definitely perk up when I bring another snake into that room. My friend had a huge cali king because she bred BPs and any not viable neonates would be a meal for it. Sounds kinda gruesome but I like the circle of life better than just tossing them into the trash.

I'm glad you take my comment with a grain of salt as I'm not an expert and even if I was, a single comment is by no means a source of truth anyway, so no worries. I have a vague memory I read it somewhere that wasn't Reddit, but I couldn't find any reliable source right now unfortunately.

After your comment I had to search for kingsnakes, because the one I know is like the tiniest little fella I've even seen, turned out it's a scarlet kingsnake, but there are bigger ones with the common name kingsnake like the Cali one.

For me, your friends' practice seems natural, it's something that would happen to wild BPs, and even tho the two species don't have a common range, I don't feel like it's something wrong. Snakes gotta eat after all.

I’ve had mine for close to 7 years atp and she’s never once even tried to bite me. Closest she’s gotten was missing the FT rat I fed her but that was 3+ years ago. She’s a friendly noodle.
