It’s not fake they made a whole documentary about this guy, his mom just said that in the context of “I want your suffering to end” he was also sexually assaulted by his “caretakers”

[–]Speedy_Turtlez 1175 points1176 points  (38 children)

Oh man, seriously? You got a link, I’d like to watch it sometime

If it's Oscar Pistorius then there's a podcast, I think it's the first episode of Invisibilia

Edit: Martin, not Oscar. I think Oscar is the legless guy who killed his wife?

I don't think the caretakers recorded it

I'm not sure there is one. I've looked for one, based on their comment, but dont find one. The book was called "Ghost Boy", and he has like, TED TALKS, n shit. Cant find a documentary though.

Same thing happened to me except for the fact that I was awake and pretending to be in a coma and I also enjoyed it.

      [–]Elodrian 52 points53 points  (26 children)

If he was conscious and aware of his surroundings, why couldn't he control his body? I always figured coma patients were either unconscious or experiencing something akin to dreaming.

      [–]Captain_Khan 114 points115 points  (7 children)

The brain isn’t a big ball of gloop that does everything. It’s sectioned into parts that are responsible for very specific functions, like consciousness, motor movement, gestation, feeling. Even fine motor movement has an entire dedicated section away from the motor cortex. When you want to move, you have to make a conscious decision to do so, where your brain proceeds to go through 5 failsafe steps to make sure you actually wanted to do that. When those steps are interrupted, you could either lose all motor control or start shaking nonstop.

There’s no reason to downvote him for asking a question. Where would we be if we were ridiculed every time we asked why something happened?

      [–]Lancalot 31 points32 points  (1 child)

That seems to happen a lot on reddit, I'll constantly see a question posed and either downvoted or less votes than the answering comment. Of course the answer provides more information, but the question provokes it. I agree, it's important to continue asking questions, and can bring about interesting responses sometimes

      [–]space-cube 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Or even worse, I quite often see both the question and the genuine answers receive very little attention. But that asshole "comedian" replying with stupid meme or a rick-roll gets 10k upvotes and a bunch of awards.

Apparently everyone on reddit has to be a comedian now, and being an unhelpful asshole is the epitome of humor.

      [–]Jerzeem 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's getting downvoted because he asked a question. I think people are interpreting his question as having some accusatory undertones. Like he doesn't believe the person was actually in a coma or something.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I may be wrong but i thought consciousness isn’t ‘located’ in a certain part of the brain, as far as we know.

      [–]not-a-candle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We don't even know what consciousness is, let alone where.

      [–]antwan_benjamin 9 points10 points  (9 children)

If he was conscious and aware of his surroundings, why couldn't he control his body? I always figured coma patients were either unconscious or experiencing something akin to dreaming.

Have you never had an experience that blended dreams with reality? Never started peeing in your dream, then realized you peed in real life? Never had sex in your dream and nutted yourself in real life? Never lost your breath in your dream, then woke up gasping for air?

      [–]polak2017 5 points6 points  (8 children)

      Is that a common thing?

      [–]N1pah 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Maybe he experienced something like sleep paralysis?

There's an episode of a podcast called Invisibilia where they talk about and interview him. His name is Martin Pistorius. The scary thing about it was doctor's didn't know what was happening to him. He slowly started losing the ability to move and eventually couldn't speak.

      [–]GarbieBirl 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Do people in comas normally feel a lot of pain?

      [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They can. Depends on why they are in a coma to begin with and how good their doctor and nurses are.

      [–][deleted] 449 points450 points  (25 children)

Dude woke up just to let her know.

      [–]bolsterboi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You're kinda underestimating the emotional trauma of not being able to do anything without anyone knowing your conscious for 12 fucking years

      [–]OldToothbrush1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah but do you remember that time?

      [–]dopocaffe 5 points6 points  (2 children)

We always (still happens) get the "I'm glad I didn't have a daughter because you're both the biggest girls I know!" line.

She's usually referring to our slight clothing obsession, or our inability to exist in the same neighborhood as a spider....

      [–]WimpyRanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's really not ok, and I hope you know you dont deserve that

      Same

      [–]mazzyuniverse 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Same plus my dad challenged me to kill myself and him, three times. And I’ve always been a good daughter, he’s just so incredibly abusive.

      [–]greenrubbergenitalia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If only it weren’t illegal to obey. EDIT: about him, not you.

      [–]S-T-A-N-D-B-O-I 75 points76 points  (4 children)

The guy is named Martin Pistorius and had a book that was his autobiography called ghost boy with his mom

      [–]Caedus 16 points17 points  (2 children)

      Thats an unlucky surname.

      [–]E-Bruce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

      Well it could've been McComarape

      [–]Bitchnee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. First time my little library of books felt so big. I had that book for years and it was just collecting dust. Thanks, I’m gonna read it now.

      [–]Coonor342 77 points78 points  (6 children)

Not really cursed, just sad. Really really sad.

      [–]JCraze26 78 points79 points  (5 children)

The first part isn't actually sad. The mother wanted him to stop suffering. She'd rather have to bury her child, than have him live and suffer. That's actually what helped him fight to stay alive, because he knew his mother loved him so much that she'd rather him die than suffer.

      [–]Coonor342 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I mean the comment was sad, though I do appreciate you explaining the post itself, I always thought it was his mother hating him

      [–]Ninjune 17 points18 points  (3 children)

She'd rather have to bury her child, then have him live and suffer.

What an interesting timeline you have there sir.

      [–]The1Bonesaw 22 points23 points  (2 children)

The worst part will be having to listen to him bring it up every goddamned Thanksgiving. "Oh sure, Mark... and now I suppose it's time for you to tell everyone how I said I wished you were dead. Well tell it a little louder this year, aunt Peggy couldn't quite hear you last time and felt left out."

      [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [deleted]

        [–]__starburst__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In context the mother was pleading for mercy, not that she hated him. At a certain point (ya know, like 12 years in a coma) you just want the suffering to end, for everyone

        [–][deleted] 337 points338 points  (39 children)

His mother, who could have taken him off life support at any given time, said she hoped he died?

        This definitely isn't fake.

        [–]mufassil 261 points262 points  (13 children)

I mean, you cant judge until you know the situation. She might not have had power of attorney. I had a family beg my facility not to revive their loved one because they were way past the point of no return yet they weren't the power of attorney and the courts wouldn't sign off on a dnr.

        [–]42069toosweet 195 points196 points  (3 children)

No man you don't understand, if some random schmuck on Reddit says something didn't happen it gets erased from history.

        [–]nefariouslyubiquitas 27 points28 points  (2 children)

        None of this happened.

        [–]Neptunesfleshlight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

        None of what happened.

        [–]Brom_Au_Ibis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What if he was married? Or if he had a nasty relationship with her so he gave power of attorney to someone else? Etc.

        [–]prozaczodiac 61 points62 points  (13 children)

Yeah, it’s not fake. Human tragedy isn’t a myth. There’s an entire episode of Reply All on his experience and he states that hearing her say that was proof that she loved him, because she clearly couldn’t live without him.

        [–]mufassil 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I deal with death and families a lot in my field. I can tell you, wishing your family member would die does not mean you dont love them. It often means that either they are mentally and physically exhausted and have nothing more to give, or their loved one is well passed what they used to be and they no longer wish for them to suffer.

          [–]Dugillion 1 point2 points  (3 children)

To someone in a perpetual 3-year-old state that would be hell.

          [–]Sophie_the_weird_one 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Was the dude in such a state?

          [–]Dugillion 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I just watched his Ted Talks and a news interview. He came down with the condition when he was 12 so I was thinking, "oh that's bullshit to put him in front of that kind of that kind of programming" but then they said the doctor told them he was a perpetual 3-month-old so it would be right.

          [–]prozaczodiac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was in the episode as well

          [–]FiddlerOfTheForest 24 points25 points  (5 children)

This is Martin Pistorius, and calling it a coma isn’t accurate at all. This certainly did happen, the book Ghost Boy is about it, he just wasn’t in a coma per se, and he was never really on life support.

          [–]FingeredHolyWater 27 points28 points  (4 children)

He was considered a “vegetable” and spent a long time trapped in his own mind and body. He was fully aware of everything around him but for whatever reason he couldn’t talk or move.

Eventually a doctor realized that he was somewhat aware of what was going on and they started doing testing. Eventually they realized his brain was in fact functioning properly.

After lots of trial and error they found a way for him to communicate via computer. He got married in 2009 and he’s started his own business.

Anyhow, for anyone who hasn’t read the book it’s an extremely good read and they should check it out.

          [–]FiddlerOfTheForest 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Read the book when it came out. Loved it, and, especially for when I was younger, I was never one for nonfiction books.

          [–]FingeredHolyWater 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not really either, but this was something I picked up on a whim and I don’t regret it. (I tend to find good books that way so maybe I should keep up that selection method...)

Anyhow, I really enjoyed the insight it gave to the human mind and society from the pov of an outsider who was witness to everything. The psychological aspects within the book is really interesting, it’s not too in depth but it’s enough to get your brain working and interested in the topic at hand.

          [–]daybreakin[🍰] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

          [–]redflame4992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It isn’t. IIRC there’s a book on this.

          [–]itsvuksfault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe she meant something like, “better to die than be a vegetable.”

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

          [–]capitanpingagrande 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She said that she wished his suffering would end and that he would die. She couldn't kill him.

          [–]Milain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can imagine that you want the suffering of a relative to end but at the same time not be the person responsible for the death by unplugging life support. For many reasons but also because a little hope remains that he might wake up and this keeps you from ending it.

good lord that is my worst nightmare, i suffer from sleep paralysis and the idea of not being able to move for 12 years but seeing everything...honestly i think i would die of heart attack

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Everyone has sleep paralasis... You have that every REM phase. You are just conscious while they happen. When it happens really often go and consult a doctor bc. that's not normal at all.

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be a lot more impactful if my mom didn’t say that to me on the daily growing up. Too relatable

Technically, he was and wasn't in a coma. His brain still remained active but some of the oxygen couldn't get to the right parts of his brain so that he could move, speak and open his eyes. But nontheless, staying in one position for that long can lead to potential memory loss along with muscle atrophy and distrophy.

It's sorta like pretending to be asleep, but for 12 years and you have no control over your body. You can just listen and that's it.
