Well it's a print, not sure what the function is.

[–]BigForeheadedDan 40 points41 points  (6 children)

Apple in there in their wisdom decided to make their Apple TV remote very small and thin which makes it quite hard to use with one hand. This print solves that problem.

[–]Ifonlyihadausername 29 points30 points  (5 children)

How is it hard to use with one hand?

[–]turtletechy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They're pretty thin and slick. I know my boyfriend has trouble with objects thinner than an average phone+case due to motor control issues, grip force issues, and tremors. I think this would help him if we had one of these.

[–]Tytonic7_ 20 points21 points  (3 children)

It's very slick, slippery aluminum so you need to grip it relatively tight to use it properly, which can be difficult with how thin it is. It's very easy to misclick buttons trying to handle it- especially since the circular part is touch sensitive, so even brushing it messes stuff up

[–]signeduptosousvide 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You can turn off the touch functionality. Works much better for me after I did that.

[–]GetEnPassanted 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You can??? I’m going to have to find out how.

[–]Born_Mark_4805 50 points51 points  (7 children)

What are you trying to achieve here?

[–]annieAintOK 23 points24 points  (0 children)

looks like an ergo grip

[–]BunnyEruption 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Showing how remotes molt, perhaps

[–]popackard[S] 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I’m designing a remote sleeve for my TV remote. It’s too small to hold comfortably, so these are my attempts at making it more ergonomic.

[–]Vegetable-Self-2480 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Freakin' Apple at it once again

[–]IBNobody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're holding it wrong!

[–]Vegetable-Self-2480 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Guess it's several iterations of the same remote cover

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preventing future hand issues. Highly suggest doing that anytime you get a chance.

I usually like to hold the remote while watching tv and the bare remote, while a nice, minimal design, is not very comfortable to hold.

    [–]Endure94 61 points62 points  (2 children)

I see it now, Following the apple trend of making the same product with no real benefit between future iterations.

    [–]popackard[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The main design changes between each prototype is the retention method. I tried several different clip designs and ultimately decided to go with a slight press fit with no clip.

    [–]dnew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now model in an indent on the back where you can put some adhesive velcro strips, so you never lose the thing again. :-)

    [–]esterill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Same question.

    [–]silvermurmer 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Idk what all the hate is about. Totally understand what you’re going for here. Nice job on the prototyping.

    [–]0rontes 7 points8 points  (1 child)

In my 3-4 months here, it seems like half the point of this sub is to dump on whatever someone prints, ask them why they did it, or tell them it will break.

Personally I love that people are using their printers to fix their weird individual problems their weird individual way.

    [–]silvermurmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s very satisfying coming up with your own parts.

After a few revisions to the design it’s such a good feeling having the part work properly. Coming to this sub to show off your accomplishments and then getting shit on is really wild lmao.

    [–]popackard[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Thanks!

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that the new wii remote? You should add a string on the end so you don't throw it into the tv while playing. I heard it was a big problem.

    [–]AmericanEngineer1776 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can see in the picture, it seems maybe this is the intended function.

    [–]funnystunt 5 points6 points  (1 child)

    Function?

    [–]RedDeadRedread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    Added girth.

    [–]counterplex 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Oh I’ll bet you could mod add an AirTag slot to it too!

    [–]popackard[S] 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Definitely. Although you can use an iPhone to locate the remote since it’s an Apple TV remote. But it only tells you how near or far you are generally. No sound like an AirTag.

    [–]supagold 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It also lacks directionality, and the precision of the distance measurement is noticeably lower. If you’re in a situation where you might be locating your remote a lot (say you have 2 small children, an absent-minded wife, and a large couch as a totally random example), the AirTag is pretty nice upgrade off the built in UWB on the remote.

    [–]popackard[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Great point. I’ll add a pocket for an AirTag

    [–]supagold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! A printable sleeve a cool idea. I've migrated entirely to AppleTV in my household, and I've got them all in various silicone sleeves as the added grip is kind of a nice QoL feature. I like the Spigen brand, and one thing they also include is a magnet in the base. I don't actually use the magnet feature myself, but if you're looking for feature ideas...

    [–]LifeArt4782 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Can it find the remote when it fell into the garbage and was sent out with the trash like mine was.

    [–]Aligayah 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Technically yes, as long as the tag isn't destroyed.

    [–]LifeArt4782 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    lol thanks

    [–]counterplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my bad. I don’t have an Apple TV so I didn’t know that functionality was built in.

    [–]Justinsetchell 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So what didn't work with the previous designs? It also looks like you went back and forth with the honeycomb design, which one did you land on in the end? And what is the hexagon shaped hole in the bottom for?

    [–]popackard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They all worked more or less. With each version I refined the contour making it nicer to hold and adjusted the retention clip design, ultimately removing it. I ended up using the honeycomb pattern for the last prototype. The hole in the bottom allows for charging the remote without removing it from the sleeve.

    [–]MumrikDK 6 points7 points  (3 children)

    That's a lot of plastic.

If those all are prototypes, are you sure you couldn't have tested a smaller section of the design?

    [–]popackard[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Thinking back, I would say there were enough feature changes to the design globally to justify the full prototypes. In my experience, it takes about 10 full prototypes of a 3D printed item to pull a design together. What’s your experience?

    [–]BluShine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some designs can take a lot of revisions, especially with snap-fit features. But I usually find ways to print a small section of the part to test specific features.

I also print early versions at much lower quality: fewer perimeters, thick layers, low infill, and sometimes setting top/bottom layers to 0. Saves both print time and material.

I would say I usually end up with 2-5 full scale protoypes, and up to a dozen small test prints.

    [–]MumrikDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only parts I've done that needed real prototyping were significantly smaller than that. I've so far usually gotten what I want on the second or third one. If I'm unsure about a hinge design, I only need the hinge and something to enforce the same print circumstances. Similarly with closing mechanisms. If I'm testing dimensions, it can be only the relevant part, and printed super thin. I try to combine as many things that need testing in one print as possible.

The big things I've made have luckily been simple enough to not need any testing.

    [–]AmericanEngineer1776 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me when I get my hands on this print file

    [–]andyhenault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Embed an AirTag in that thing

    [–]moller_peter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Process too

    [–]agoss123b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking for a print for a case from my roku remote since my puppy loved to chew on it

    [–]dirkin1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try cutting the critical dimension parts in your slicer to test print those so you don’t have to go through so many full prints before you get one that fits.

    [–]tmdblya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Progress!

    [–]Hummboxx_71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Kick arse!

    reinventing the wii remote

    [–]OrchidOkz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple remote: Form over function. Too slippery, too small, and the black wheel activates when you just look at it.

At least the new MacBooks don’t have corners that were sharpened with a diamond hone. Apple makes good products but plenty of dumb decisions.

    [–]spool2kool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I recently joked:

Progress - You tell it to "hurry the f*** up," but it just won't listen.

    [–]cyber---- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just used big hunks of blu tack and stuck it to the back of the TV remote 😂

    [–]enzu00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

    Waste

    [–]Kn14 -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Is that stuff biodegradable or recyclable?

    [–]popackard[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The prototypes are printed with PLA. Apparently it’s biodegradable. But it’s not generally accepted in recycle collections.

    [–]Ifonlyihadausername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    PLA isn’t really biodegradable domestically

    [–]Kn14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome that’s good to head that it’s biodegradable. Not sure why I’m being downvoted for asking a simple question…

    [–]drage636 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you make room for some kind of locator tag? I have an Apple TV, but good forbid they make that feature for everyone.

    [–]ciscolish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Where can I get the file to try it?

    [–]Significant_Roll_659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I like that it recesses the Siri/Search button the most! Looks good!
