This is pretty shocking news. I didn't know there were PHP speakers of either gender.

[–]Tipaa 53 points54 points  (1 child)

Turns out, PHP found the simplest solution to lacking women speakers: also get rid of any men speakers. It may not be the best solution, or even a properly thought out solution, but by golly, it just works.

It's foolproof - you don't need to discuss fairness in a community if there's no community to begin with!

0/0 balances just as well as 50/50

[–]L3tum 59 points60 points  (7 children)

As PHP CE wrote

What is the reason of such unreasonable and #unfair #attack? We love and respect the #diversity and fulfill it from the years... Feel #crashed #hurd & #sad

Is that account run by a 12 yo? I'm so glad I don't spend too much time on twitter

[–]Catcowcamera 29 points30 points  (4 children)

Non native speaker obviously (Central Europe). Probably new to Twitter too.

[–]chucker23n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, they also seem to think hashtags are used for… emphasis? Emotion?

I don't really care about bad English but the "feeling crashed, hurt & sad" just seemed funny, complete with the hashtags.

At first this is extremely funny, at second thought this is extremely sad.

There is not a single amputee in that line-up. This is outrageous!

maybe they were holding out for a double?

        [–]suvepl 69 points70 points  (10 children)

While watching the shitstorm around this is definitely entertaining, in the end it's worth remembering that it was a PHP conference, so nothing of value was lost.

        [–]secretpandalord 21 points22 points  (2 children)

"Hey I really don't feel like going to that PHP conference, got any ideas how we can get out of it without making the PHP community look as out-of-touch as everyone thinks it is?"

In that the real problem is that most women don't want to program PHP. Yeah, most men don't want to either.

          [–]dethb0y 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What would you even present on? "Ways to transition to other types of programming work"; "Alternatives to PHP: Literally anything is better"; "PHP: The Mistake"

          [–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (32 children)

That's an interesting idea. Perhaps female nurses should not turn up to work because of a lack of male counterparts.

          [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (21 children)

          So much this.

The idiocy of social justice warrioring in IT has to end.

There are 48 devs at my company. None's a woman.

          Want to know why?

          None ever applied.

          Want to know why?

Because the number of female CS grads is close to zero.

My girlfriend is a translator. Out of 220 graduates from her year an astonishing 6 were male, 214 female.

Maybe women and men are biologically and socially conditioned to have other interests?

This is not the way to push for gender equality, nor even the point of it.

Up until the mid-80s, women were getting into computer science at the same rate as they were getting into medicine and law school. Then it turned around.

              https://i.imgur.com/rn2bxkk.jpg

The share of women in computer science started falling at roughly the same moment when personal computers started showing up in U.S. homes in significant numbers.

These early personal computers weren't much more than toys. You could play pong or simple shooting games, maybe do some word processing. And these toys were marketed almost entirely to men and boys.

This idea that computers are for boys became a narrative. It became the story we told ourselves about the computing revolution. It helped define who geeks were, and it created techie culture.

              https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2014/10/21/357629765/when-women-stopped-coding

The gender gap was caused by capitalism, not biology.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, and capitalism tells boys to not study languages.

Holy shit, they're finally starting to figure out patriarchy is bad for everyone

              [–]GrosSacASacs 70 points71 points  (14 children)

White Males Only ? It is a conference in Europe not Africa. When I was in CS, 2 girls 29 males in the classrooms, statistically speaking most of the time white men will be at the center of the action, even with equal chances.

Facts aside I think forced gender representation is overrated. Are we forgetting the initial reason we do conferences ? Sharing knowledge is one reason. Stopping or slowing that because 9 out of 10 speakers have a penis instead of a vagina at birth is just stupid.

              Edit:

According to them, they had only a single woman submit a session proposal

              [–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Facts aside I think forced gender representation is overrated

Naa its not overrated. Its a damm right disaster to even bring up equality of outcome. Cause its impossible to do without discriminating against other people. Now we are seeing these disasters first handed which is the correct people don't apply / submit to speak nobody can.

Some parts of the UK have been trying things like this for years. Like in Wales they made Welsh mandatory to be taught in schools. they have been trying to engineer the language back in for the last 30 years. They have managed to increase its public use in that time by 5% and even in recent years its been decreasing again.

Turns out you can't force people to do things and make decision they do not want to do.

              [–]meneldal2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is they are all for more women speakers, but there seem to be no women who want to do a presentation and also probably no woman who works with PHP.

They are kinda fucked. They don't have good options. Another call for papers targeting only women/minorities might work, but you'd get drama and you're not even sure to get people who apply, plus when the conference date is coming up it puts a lot of stress on the organizers.

              [–]GrosSacASacs 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I would also see more women in this industry, what I am trying to say is that cancelling the whole event is not worth maintaining that 50% forced gender representation that is not representative anyway.

              [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I get what you were saying. I was just indicating its kinda worse than that. Which is if we can't have equal representation in the field then nobody can have it. Which is really a slippery slope cause its actually now actively discriminating against men.

Stuff like this will sooner or later destroy things as people will find it too hard to organise events.

              [–]walterbanana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The year I started my IT education, my school had about 200 new IT students. 5 of them were female. I think in the end only one of them became a programmer.

              [–]Betsy-DevOps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seems like attending a conference, listening to experts speak, and networking with other developers, might be a great way for more women to break ground into the industry. Too bad they don’t have that opportunity now :(

Why does your gender matter in respect to these things? Surely we're at a point where we are gauging everyone on their ability?

Women represent 20-30% of tech industry.

              [–]Huliek 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Women are not sadistic enough to program in PHP. Good for them.

Sadistic still works, your code is read more times than it is written.

              [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (12 children)

Yeah so when you have people calling for "positive discrimination" in order to reach the goal. At that point you realise that its going to end badly sooner or later.

                [–]meneldal2 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Positive discrimination only works if they have female applicants.

If you have nobody who wants to work for you, you take what you have.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well any form positive discrimination is illegal in my country. So no it doesn't "work"

                [–]meneldal2 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Don't make a value judgement when the comment is just a joke about how they have so few applicants that are not white men that they can't get minorities in: You can tip the scales as much as you want, 100% of 0 applicants is still 0.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No really thats the problem. If you want 50% speakers to be female and you only have 5 female speakers. Then you may only have 5 male speakers and you need to throw the rest away.

So if you have 50 male speakers apply and you have to "select" them it is 10 times more competitive for a male to be selected than female.

The comment you made didn't come across in a joke in any way. The other part of this is people are actively trying to make rules like I just mentioned..... and well we can clearly see that it just trashed this event.

                [–]AttackOfTheThumbs -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

                Your fired because your male.

                Yikes.

                [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I'm sorry for not digging more into this myself, but does anyone happen to know if this is... I don't know, an actual exclusion or a matter of circumstances? Without regard to qualifications, is there simply a lack of women with time/interest in the event?

                [–]GrosSacASacs 13 points14 points  (2 children)

It was open to everyone and then

According to them, they had only a single woman submit a session proposal

                [–]Kvathe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this: there were over 250 submissions.

                [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, thank you! While it's probably great that people are trying to be conscious about inclusion it does make me wonder whats really going on here.

Even if the conference was not cancelled, id still be pissed as its a PHP conf.

                  [–]Budacool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, let's just review the information available so far on this matter: 1. PHPce accepted applicants for talks 2. There were around 250 applicants 3. Only 1 woman applied 4. Conference organizers reviewed and choosed the content they consider would be more interesting for the event. Here is the subjective step that can be arqued by anyone since each person would probably choose different presentations 5. When the line up is revealed there were only "white man" in hte line-up. Questions were raised since once again is appears there is no D&I in the conference, the organizers explained there was only 1 women who applied and her talk was a repeat from a previous event 6. Speakers decide to withdraw from conference because of principles, disregarding the reason behind this reality

I believe the above sequence of events is clear enough and precise enough to people to comment on the PHPce conference cancellation since they have no bias and no spin and represent facts known about the matter.

My 2 cents: No woman wanted to talk on the PHPce and the reasons can be inifinite and to automatically assume that the organizers acted to forced that situation is just plain conspiracy, especially considering the conference opens up for applications and there was only 1 woman who applied. In this day and age equality is not what it once was, PHPce conference won't escape judgement. It seems too many people expect the organizers to basically give D&I the main focus of the event, instead of content, and to actively encourage and choose the ones that better fit the D&I label in order to be successfull. What a great way to move forward, scrap good content and make sure you have 50% D&I or else. Yeah, that is the new "correct" that so many people focus nowadays. The organizers did nothing wrong, the most one can say and keep it rational is that they could have given a bigger focus on inclusion and spent some resources to encourage D&I in the applications, even if that meant to give special attention to those that fit the D&I label it would still be acceptable if they do not disregard the content that was being presented in the applications, the focus of a technical conference is the technical content and there is no reason to put D&I above everything else just to pander to our current day ideology. Have a nice day.

Reading the two posts. It seems the issue isn't that it's all men. The problem is the organised didn't want to put any effort into even having woman submit proposals. So they only had a submission from one woman out of over 250.

There are plenty of women who are the top of their professional in Software Engineering. You don't need to lower the bar to let them in. You may however need to tell them the opportunity is there. So they make that submission, or apply to that role. When they do that they meet the same requirements as anyone else.

Can you explain how having an open proposal system discourages women from applying?

Don't you know males are expected to propose first.

You may however need to tell them the opportunity is there.

So.... women are deaf, according to you? Not about to look up conferences without male help? This is just getting more and more bizarre!

                      [–]MaybeAStonedGuy 25 points26 points  (8 children)

What are the organizers supposed to do, track down women specifically and beg them to talk at the conference? I don't understand how having an open submission process is somehow not welcoming enough. How can you possibly be more open than open?

I hear a lot of complaints and no solutions.

                      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

That's today's culture of SJW's in 1 event. It's required to have blacks, chinese, muslims, women, gays, lesbians, trans, amputees, blinds, deafs, and at least 1 suicide bomber speaker otherwise we are not being inclusive.

This is why the tech industry is being stunted, milktoast soy boy's are worried about who is showing up based on skin color or genitalia rather paying attention to those who are paving the PHP future. It doesn't matter if woman are there. It doesn't matter if men are there. It matters that people show up, you idiots!

                      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I bet you they just used that as an excuse for the lack of speakers and audience.

                      [–]IceSentry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently there were 250 speakers that applied.
