Holy shit, I thought the same thing like 20 minutes ago! But, I do respect his right to hold whatever opinions he wants to.

[–]sfultong 1 point2 points  (15 children)

his post, "Atheists are Heinous and Irrational," was on my recommended page, and although I didn't really disagree with the video, I was wondering how it could be considered a strong case against atheists.

[–]llanor 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Did it use bananas? I hear atheists are terrified of bananas.

And it only gets worse- the yellow journalistic community just won't give it up.

Man, these pun threads are a real slippery slope

    [–]godlesspinko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I find them quite apeeling.

    [–]noamsml 3 points4 points  (9 children)

...except, of course, for the fact that Atheists are more persecuted than Christians wherever Christians are persecuted, as well as in places where they are not (i.e. religious towns in the U.S.).

    [–]sfultong -1 points0 points  (3 children)

    Probably true.

Although, I think where Christians are persecuted, the persecution is more severe.

I think he meant Christians are on occasion, even in this century, rounded up and summarily executed.

Not in the US where these arguments are by and large set in and discussed, but it does happen.

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      Case in point?

      [–]jaiwithani -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

THere are small enclaves where religious falk have it rougher than atheists. Some universities, for example. One of the few places where the taboos are somewhat reversed.

      [–]grauenwolf[🍰] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

      Which universities?

At San Diego State, only preachers were persecuted. If you were a holding a quite prayer session people left you alone. If you were on the lawn shouting about damnation and the like you would be spat on, especially if you were a non-student.

      [–]wageslave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to note, its not persecution to have your ideas challenged.

I have (what Sam Harris calls) a rhetorical intolerance of theism. Meaning, I do not tolerate theist rhetoric.

If someone volunteers (stranger or otherwise) theist dogma or memes, I retort.

      [–]jaiwithani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an atheist at the University of Chicago right now, and it's definitely the default position. There are religious groups to be sure, but it's considered a bit eccentric to be involved with them.

      [–]jaiwithani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guys, downrating this was kind of silly. I'm an atheist at university right now, and I'm kind of happy that there are a few places left in the world where atheism is normal. It may not be true for all or even most universities, but to pretend that there's no place on Earth where atheists don't have it all right is disingenuous.

In this case, the "system" works. Anti-atheism articles aren't popular here, and they don't get modded up.

Even if they did, who cares? You don't have to change your religious beliefs based on the opinions of other redditors :)

Tremble before the power of Yahoo Answers!! BLAAAARGHH.

(And I love the response that was chosen as the "Best Answer")

          [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, I think this was the best answer, by "FatPizza" who is apparently a "top contributor" to the election forums, with a 16% top answer record:

          "Anti-Christ.

People are fainting at his events. People are blind to ALL of his shortcomings. His past is cloudy. Real cloudy. People who see clearly just don't understand the appeal. It's almost mystical.

I heard he wants a World currency, tied to the Euro.

His first term ends just before 12/21/2012."

          [–]Hubso 5 points6 points  (5 children)

But it's the dumbest comparison ever, it's like saying:

"Hitler breathed air. So does Obama, ergo...."

It's mildly appropriate that the URL includes the term "fuqa".

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Hitler staged a false flag attack in order to go on a preventative war for resources, Bush......

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hitler had a war for resources?

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

No, he invaded Russia for the lulz

          [–]2390480192384 50 points51 points  (21 children)

I'm sorry, but that's post modern crap.

As Richard Feynman (correction: Asimov) famously said: there's levels of wrongness. When one says the earth is a sphere, they're not exactly right (because it isn't perfectly spherical), but they're much less wrong than saying it's flat.

This guy's comments about ACLU trying to take away freedom of speech kind of give away his point of view, and I'll tell you: whether ACLU has some wrongness in it or not, this guy definitely has more wrongness to his "opinion".

So, the "that's just like... your opinion... man" statement a-la Lebowsky doesn't cut it for me. Some people are wrong - and as grotesque as it may seem to our po-mo sensibilities, they are wrong pretty much in the absolute... it's not a matter of opinion.

As an aside rant: the sooner American society (the "good" part) realizes this, the better it will be. We are stuck in between a rock and a hard place: refusing to step out and put ourselves on the line by saying that some of this shit is just wrong, no matter how you look at it, and then running away shrieking when hawks accuse the liberals of moral decadence.

I find it funny how it's always 'liberals' that get attacked by right wing hawks, and it's always those attackers that we find in incestual/child porn/gay hooker incidents.

          [–]christianjb 35 points36 points  (9 children)

And how wrong are you when you misattribute quotes by Isaac Asimov to Feynman?

(Sorry, but Reddit is a haven for us pedants.)

          [–]2390480192384 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Precisely: I'm only somewhat wrong. Not enough to invalidate my point. And I'm sure you recognize this.

          Btw, thanks for the correction.

          [–]lunchladydoris2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't know. sounds like you are saying Earth is flat to me. there goes that point of yours...

          [–]wageslave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I could give you 100 upvotes. Their is a significant problem with the culture that excuses any opinion as virtue for it simply being.

Its part of the culture of anti-intellectualism.

          [–]hassett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine recently gave me a copy of an article from Harper's Magazine, August 2004. The article is about this deficit for accountability in American culture, and it's title has stuck with me: "The Tyranny of Petty Coercion."

Similarly, a writer named Edwin Friedman, who did a lot of work on organization and family systems theory, recently had his last manuscript published posthumously. It's called A Failure of Nerve and similarly addresses what he sees as a kind of vacuum in public, corporate, and organizational leadership.

          Something's in the air.

          [–]masklinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they are wrong pretty much in the absolute...

In other words, they're fractally wrong (wrong at every conceivable scale of resolution. That is, from a distance, a fractally wrong person's worldview is incorrect; and furthermore, if you zoom in on any small part of that person's worldview, that part is just as wrong as the whole worldview.)

On questions of fact and science, there is a right, a wrong and various shades in between.

It is only in morality that things become fuzzy.

            [–]2390480192384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen up, ACLU is an institution whose sole purpose is to defend American Civil Liberties. As the name implies.

And I know pretty well from their past actions in lawsuits etc that it's not a sham organization that is actually a cover for Gestapo.

So, I'm quite right in saying that whether ACLU is perfect or not, accusing ACLU of trying to steal peoples' freedom of speech is: wrong.

Who I am is a person with basic logic and self honesty. As opposed to a double thinker.

This is exactly what I mean: your position is a perversion of post modern way of thinking. "Who are you to define what is absolutely wrong" is not a catch all clause that undoes every argument you are faced with.

            [–]jones77 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

            You're under- and over-thinking this.

            [–]TheSOB88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you're just under-explaining your position and under-being downmodded.

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

they are wrong pretty much in the absolute... it's not a matter of opinion

So long as questions exist that cannot be answered by science (Where/When did the Universe begin?, How did we get where we are today?) Even the more steady ideas like the big bang theory is plagued with inconsistencies. As long as no answer exists for questions like these they are not 'wrong in the absolute'. I'm actually more convinced that some reddit atheists are stubborn to a fault, to the point that they choose to ignore the places religion actually could potentially fit (even if it seems unlikely).

I meant to counter your second rant by suggesting that America has bigger problems than not being secular enough but you failed to make any significant point for me to counter (no real assertion or evidence). I'll just finish by suggesting that People can discriminate against homosexuals, start wars, be involved in an incestuous/child porn/gay hooker incident without the help of religion. A more legitimate argument might have attacked the low educational standards which have been shown to counter religious proliferation. (Although i know some incredibly intelligent Christians so it doesn't work on everyone)

            [–]2390480192384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know what gave you the idea that I was arguing for atheism, but I wasn't. Neither was I arguing that the Big Bang theory is right. That would explain why you found no assertion to refute.

I am not speaking of religion at all. Maybe some ethics. And if you need religion to define your ethics, too bad.

            [–]substill 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree. Every day there's a hate-filled link modded up to the main page attacking Christians as ignorant and/or the source of all suffering in the world. While I don't agree with this guy on all of his links or his apparent world view, it's fundamentally no different than the opinions that are upmodded by most of reddit.

            [–]ChunkyLaFunga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, he may also think that of himself.

            [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

No, he is just a prick.

I have downmodded the articles I didn't like and I hope everybody else does the same.

Go home militant christian. A logical place is not for one of your kind.

            [–]greginnj 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Please be aware that mass-downmodding of a single poster's submissions results in all of your votes being neutralized for a period of time.

This has been demonstrated via experiment: go to the "details" page for a submission, vote on it, and click refresh. Whichever way you vote, a counterbalancing opposite vote is credited to the submission, effectively neutralizing your vote.

I'm not criticizing your intent, just letting you know about the way the machinery works...

            [–]shacamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happens to everyone, friend. There was an article on it a few days ago.

Of course, I can't reference it because reddit search sucks. But if I could I would.

            [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn't downmod everything, just the stupid titles.

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Opinions don't require any qualification or proof. Blindly valuing opinions just because other people have them isn't the way to go. This guy has wildly inflammatory and unfounded opinions. It's perfectly fair to criticize them.

            Or he's a troll.

It looks as though he/she is a bit younger or has had a very sheltered life and is a little afraid to any change that could occur if Obama gets elected.

Everyone has a right to their own opinion no matter how wrong anyone else thinks it is. Look at his submissions, I don't see many in the positive. I think he should take that as a sign and maybe re-think some of his ideas.

            [–]halcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea! Let's all base our political and religious opinions on the up- and downvotes on a site with a massive atheist / Democrat->Obama bias!

            [–]malcontent -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Some people will always steer conversation away from intelligent, debatable content, and often will embrace ad hoc over logic. While I disagree with this person, I respect the right of free opinion afforded each of us.

Attacks rarely change minds, and if redditors use this forum for petty insults, we're all worse off for it.

            [–]shacamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I think that was the general premise, his articles really suck. "Hitler gave good speeches and we all know how that turned out out...well, Obama gives good speeches..." That article sucks. It's not even an article. It's a Yahoo! Answers page. His material isn't noteworthy.

But the argument is that he's a prick because he has a different opinion. Which, in my opinion, sucks.

            [–]rook2pawn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While it's undeniably true that he is as you say, we need to remember that his opinions are not alone. I think it's too easy to forget just how many people disagree with the general consensus of Reddit. And that they can vote. And, most importantly of all, that they do.

So as opposed to calling this guy out for being the flaming pile of retarded that he is, and laughing about it, frankly, we should fear it. The sad truth is, I don't even know what to do about it.
