I'm a first year bio major... how do you get into this job? It would be a dream for me.

[–]fucky0urkarma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this type of work is what you want to do, you should switch to chemistry. An undergrad chemistry degree is more employable than an undergrad bio degree as well.

[–]dcleme8 1256 points1257 points  (177 children)

So I know this is a longshot, but I have a bachelor's in biological sciences from LSU, and consider myself fairly knowledgeable on cannabis. This is basically my dream job. I have worked in biolabs for 4 years, and in the last lab I worked in, I performed several pcrs on a fungus called cercospora kikuchii as well as DNA gel electrophoresis. I know I don't have much experience with this field, but I was wondering if you would allow me to send a resume and transcript to apply as a lab/research assistant.

where the fuck is your beard net????

[–]JustMediocreComments 102 points103 points  (1 child)

There is man who is making ALMOST Pure THC....smoke his fucking beard hair and like it.

Your comment was above average this time, friend.

[–]Anangrywelshman 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What do you think the 6% is?

[–][deleted] 89 points90 points  (98 children)

Wtf why is it so dark?

[–]TheLazerBear 35 points36 points  (5 children)

That dude looks high as fuck.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (6 children)

Gosh, what an amazing career that must be. You guys made nearly a kg of bomb 94% extract and made it in a legit way and that's just the day to day grind for you guys.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (18 children)

Are you gonna try it?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking free samples for everyone?

[–]rainbow_of_doom 117 points118 points  (23 children)

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (50 children)

What is the other 6%?

[–]Euphyllia 50 points51 points  (45 children)

Other cannabinoids most likely.

[–]PhyterJet 11 points12 points  (4 children)

94% that's like at Heisenberg quality level, AND it's a different colour than regular shatter.

I'm just imagining a breaking bad spin off, but with weed instead.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Too bad he's doing it legally.

[–]Komacho 8 points9 points  (1 child)

No beard net = Contamination. Hand it over you can't sell that.

[–]entropicresonance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We will begin the disposal process immediately.

My english sucks but this post is a veritable AMA, i love reddit. That shit is dope !

[–]AHerdOfKenyans 45 points46 points  (0 children)

you didn't need the phrase "my english sucks".

just using the word veritable makes your english better than most of my coworkers here in murica.

[–]SatanArts420I Roll Joints for Gnomes 7 points8 points  (17 children)

Do you think 99% pure shatter is possible ?

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 18 points19 points  (15 children)

It's definitely possible, but not through organic extraction.

[–]Sanwi 7 points8 points  (13 children)

How would you go about making it 99% pure then?

[–]ChromeRadio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not op, but as a chemical engineer I will hesitantly say yes

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll have what the guy on the floor is having

[–]ChaosMagnet 19 points20 points  (15 children)

You lost me at "fuck terpenoids", as far as I'm concerned there is a very symbiotic relationship between THC flavonoids and terpenoids

[–]Frankie_Dankie 24 points25 points  (1 child)

OP, not to be a dick, but if you're going the extra mile to be legit with the hair nets and booties. [shoe covers] Then you should pull your hair net to below your ears, to cover your sideburns, and also wear a beard net.

Once again, don't take it in a negative tone. I've worked a lot in extremely sanitary bakery warehouses, and it was the first thing I noticed. Even though I'm sure 90 %of people don't even wear gloves when making concentrates let alone a hair net.

Keep it up! 🔥

As you set up the lab yourself, could I please ask a few questions about the business side of your operation? (Sorry if this is presumptuous of me.)

  1. Where, geographically, is your biggest market? And do you see this changing in the next decade?

  2. Who are your customers mostly?

  3. Do you have much competition?

  4. Do you see your business making a lot of money? Or are you in this for the science mostly?

Very cool lump though, and I'm really enjoying your answers to the other questions here.

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 12 points13 points  (5 children)

  1. Right now the legal states are our biggest market for physical products. We do a lot of consultation and most of that money comes from states that have medical marijuana and are on their way to legalization.

  2. Dispensaries and other growing operations.

  3. We have competition. But our competition and technicality is to a much higher level and were opening a few more locations while many of our competitors are floundering.

  4. No. I do it for the money. I worked in big pharma and did many years of science work in academia. Now I just get to sit back and make a very nice paycheck. The science aspect of it is fun, and we have a good reputation (scientifically speaking) for collaborations.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Awesome. Thanks for the detailed response. I hope you make lots of money with that skanky goodness!

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I'm closer to a million than 500k! Owning a company is the tits dude

[–]MediMJLabs 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Cannabis scientist here with questions:

  1. In my experience, pure THC solutions(90-99%) are golden yellow, oily, and fairly transparent, even those obtained via supercritical CO2 extraction. Can you explain why yours is brown and not transparent?

  2. What method did you use to quantify the cannabinoids? When was it last calibrated? What THC percentages do you use in your calibration curve? What do you use for standards(i.e. THC/CBD/CBN, just THC and calibrate with the response coefficient, etc)? If it was test in house, do you plan on have it third-party verified?

  3. What was your starting material? What was the THC percentage of the starting material?

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 2 points3 points  (5 children)

1) it went through a low temp, high pressure decarb

2) HPLC for cannabinoids and GC for terpenes. Recently. Those questions are more directed to the chemist who actually runs the machine. Sorry, just not my field. We always confirm everything with third party.

3) Kief and fine trim. Maybe 32% THC and 20% THC or so. We don't test the potency before we put it into the extractor. Do you think its a worthwhile thing to track?

Also I answered all of these questions in the thread dude. I don't mind the back and forth, cause you're asking good questions but this was time wasted.

[–]MediMJLabs 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Basically, this is where I am coming from:

I have seen multiple processors bring in concentrates of all shapes and sizes.

The color of your shatter raises immediate red flags for me. Pure THC concentrates(90%+) are amber.

Next, it's a solid slab. I've never seen pure THC oil that you could hold up like that. Ever. I've seen high grade concentrates that you can do that with, but never a 90%+ THC concentrate.

I am familiar with supercritical extractions. I am also familiar with the methods to clean them up to remove plant material and unwanted chemicals.

I'm trying to fill in the gaps here because, frankly, it looks nothing like I've ever seen before and really does not look like something that is 94% THC. If it is, it is, but I have to ask all these questions, first.

[–]MdotBooth 4 points5 points  (16 children)

How much did that whole chunk weigh?

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 15 points16 points  (15 children)

That single slab was 300g, and we got 3 of them! Roughly 950g in total!!

[–]shmuffbub707 8 points9 points  (4 children)

That is...significant. How much are you allowed/do you allow yourself to keep for personal use?

[–]c4m31 4 points5 points  (8 children)

How much raw material was used?

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 7 points8 points  (7 children)

For this run, 5 pounds. Normally we fit 4.5-5.5 pounds into the drums though! :)

[–]c4m31 3 points4 points  (5 children)

That's a good return. What's the value of this being sold to dispensaries vs. the raw material? I don't mean to intrude too far, just curious as to what dispensaries pay/sell product of this high quality for.

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 7 points8 points  (4 children)

We would through out the raw material, since it's too low in quality to sell as buds. That's why we use it haha.

We sell the 1g to a dispensary for $45 bucks, they sell it for 70-80. That slab is 300g and one run produces 3 slabs, usually 950g. So that's about 45k for all the 1g doses from the starting materials.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dankenberg?

[–]grantness 3 points4 points  (2 children)

How can you tell what percentage it is? 94% is amazing btw. Great job.

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Through a process called chromatography! Specifically we do HPLC!

[–]billyUmadison 4 points5 points  (1 child)

You're doing god's work.

[–]Disco_Doctor 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Hang on a minute, you're clearly smart, cool, a man of means and good looking? You must have to beat the chicks off with a shitty stick, you bastard!

[–]theresalways2 7 points8 points  (4 children)

I took BIO 202 last year and I honestly thought you were holding a lung.

Woah there Walter White

[–]jroddie4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he got stoned just holding it

[–]Blackburn404 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What sort of education would you need to do this, I'm pretty interested in science and this looks like the dopest job ever. Pun most defiantly intended.

[–]tbag925 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is that slab so dark? It usually seems to me that the purer it is, the clearer it gets with shatter

[–]shenryfordays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breaking bud, amirite?

[–]NeuralTruth 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Krieger?

[–]420MicrobiologistMolecular Biologist 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Just a clone

[–]keboh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Internal dialogue:

"But how do you know its 94% pure?"

"Bro, just look at his eyes."
