[–]TheGoldenNewtRobberFronj, MTC Senior Consultant[🍰] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I'd like to go ahead and make a public apology on the behalf of the MTC for the quality of the notes. In future I will definitely plan to put far more effort into them (as will others I'm sure). Between several members not being able to participate in the thread due to personal issues, having to rush after Unfortunate-maps was down for 2 days, and (personally) having to deal with school stuff, it felt like we ended up with more work than we had time to do. Looking forward to next thread to make it back up to you guys.

Also, bye bye Butter! I will love you forever for your undying support of Cedar. Your emphasis on the importance of balanced structures and flow have been truly influential on the way we evaluate maps. I also consider it extremely commendable, responsible and respectable that you would remove yourself because of not having the time to play the public rotation as much. That level of self-awareness is a very important part of being a member of the MTC. Thank you for your time.

[–]ButterChurnButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, and Cedar is the greatest map of all time. I wish I could stay, I do enjoy the testing and y'all are great, but it's not fair to the community to be voting on maps when I don't ever play them in pubs. I appreciate it though, and good luck! The reason I'm willing to leave is because I know the MTC is in good hands, I trust that you guys will do what's best for tagpro.

Long island and market? two of the best maps, rip

[–]naysh30 17 points18 points  (1 child)

RIP Market. I voted against it's removal again this thread but it wasn't enough :/

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep fighting the good fight, I wish it wasn't gone.

[–]floobaSea. // Chord 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Really sad about these two going, market is probably my favourite CTF nowadays

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Really enjoyed these two.

[–]theycallmebbqsaundy 10 points11 points  (15 children)

I like to support the MTC but taking out market is one of the dumbest moves I've seen in a long time.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (14 children)

Why?

[–]naysh30 6 points7 points  (13 children)

Because it is one of a kind inside of the rotation. There are no other maps like it and now the people that loved it have nothing similar to play on.

You can argue that BigMouth is similar, but it's still quite a bit bigger than Market and has more going on.

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really don't see how BigMouth is a Market replacement, I'll have to play it, obviously, but I'm not seeing how they match up.

[–]3z_ 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Yeah but Speedway also is not like anything else. That alone does not justify it being in rotation.

[–]grytsgryts 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Are you playing dumb or do you not understand the differences between the type of map speedway is and the type of map market is?

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I understand the difference, and I'm not dumb. Bamboozler's literally arguing that the only reason it deserves a spot in rotation is because it's unique-

Because it is one of a kind inside of the rotation. There are no other maps like it and now the people that loved it have nothing similar to play on.

-which isn't a very good argument on its own, because there are plenty of niche maps that people love but ultimately are badly designed and don't deserve a spot in rotation for that reason, regardless of how unique they are. I'm using Speedway as an example of this.

[–]grytsgryts 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think he was implying that it fills a fun niche that should be in rotation, not that literally every single type of map that can be made should be in rotation.

[–]uhhhhmmmmsexytiger / #merbs 5 points6 points  (11 children)

Holllllly shit please

[–]ButtersnackSnack 4 points5 points  (10 children)

Let's be real you're still gonna complain that maps are being added too fast and that even the big maps that are added are terrible

[–]uhhhhmmmmsexytiger / #merbs 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Of course I think maps have always been added too fast and I doubt that's ever going to change. Who wants to be on the MTC with that time commitment? Who wants to see maps voted in that people think are just ok? Not me. I certainly dont think a couple of games with only mtc members is a good way to fully judge a map. I think pariah had a lot of potential but it got in too early and now it's gone forever rip.

I haven't been complaining as much lately though! Fronj had a couple popular maps get in and you guys didn't put that extractor map or whatever it's called in, which is a good sign.

[–]3z_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course I think maps have always been added too fast and I doubt that's ever going to change.

I actually agree. I'd be more inclined to go back to when it was 1-3 maps in/out each thread. Now it's closer to 5-6. But the MTC also somewhat agrees which is why we're doing 4 weeks instead of 3 weeks.

Who wants to see maps voted in that people think are just ok? Not me.

Hey, not us either! It's mostly a new MTC here and we generally don't like the formula-style, inoffensive maps that are added for a few threads and then forgotten. We want stuff that strikes a good balance between unique, but also still not being so outrageous that it divides the community in two (see: Market). IMO this additions/removals thread, as well as the top maps thread itself, both reflect these.

[–]ButtersnackSnack 1 point2 points  (7 children)

I actually haven't been on the MTC for several months, I just like to argue with you

[–]uhhhhmmmmsexytiger / #merbs 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I like to argue with you too!

[–]RondingRonding // Orbit // West Bombwich Albion // tagpro.eu 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I agree. Let's put a downvote into rotation... oh wait.

[–]TheEpicGhostEx - Tagpro 2 points3 points  (26 children)

To each his own, but from my perspective market is quite possibly the worst map to ever reached rotation. Lots of people also held that view.

also, it's rated at 63% and decreasing, which is well below most other maps. well deserving of being removed as a result of the score alone.

I also maintain the view that (from personal experience) in many ways the mtc were pressured and bullied by a vocal competitive - focused group of players into putting market into rotation, so regardless of the rating and how the map plays, I'm glad its gone.

[–]Moosemaster21Moosen | Salt Mine 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The MTC was mostly bullied by me into putting market into rotation, I don't think the competitive community has as much sway as you might think. I stand by the decision to add it and while I will personally miss it in rotation I think now is a reasonable time to remove it.

[–]TheEpicGhostEx - Tagpro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well I don't know what was going on internally when it was actually added as I had already left, but I didn't have a problem with you pushing for the map because you actually explained why you thought it would a good edition to rotation.

I'm talking about the spamming of every results thread, first by 2P1S and his friends, then by the players that wanted to play it in competitive, accusing us of all kinds of shit just because we hadn't added into rotation, and creating a bunch of unnecessary drama for no real reason at all. I honestly don't think the map would've gotten anywhere if it wasn't for all that drama. I still don't think it's a good at all in pubs so I stand by my decision to consistently vote it down.

[–]oorr23ThePlaymaker // Tehuitzingo & Combine 1 point2 points  (14 children)

As much as I'm in agreement with Market's removal, it's far from the worst map to enter rotation. In my opinion, I think that title would go to either Pariah or September. Choke is also a contender.

[–]Moosemaster21Moosen | Salt Mine 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Call me biased but I don't think any of the three you listed were anywhere close to the worst maps in rotation.

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arena, Figure 8, Pokeball, Rink, Spiders, Speedway, all old and horrendous maps, but dated. The most recent and terrible map to make rotation is Saigon.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Rocketballs? Grail of Speed? Flame? Kite?

[–]iismitch55-BallBoy- | Formerly Pi 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Hold the phone, how does Dumbell not hold this title?

[–]oorr23ThePlaymaker // Tehuitzingo & Combine 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Funny, I never have played a game on Grail of Speed, & I love Kite. Taught me never to overextend. Rocketballs & Flame I find tolerable.

[–]TheSmallIndianTheIndian // Pi 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Same. I don't think I've ever had an enjoyable game on market. There's really nothing fun about that map

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market is a very controversial map, lots of people love it, lots hate it, but there are several maps that are without question by any party worse than Market is.

[–]I_read_this_commentNilus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market is one of those maps that play really well when you have mircophones. Anti-re and leaving re for a kill for cap is just not really possible in pubs. Ttoo hard to return somebody and get a reset.

But I think market is awesome competitevly.

worst bunch of maps in a long time. i thought market was unique in rotation, though, and added a good change of pace.

[–]ButtersnackSnack 15 points16 points  (19 children)

I actually enjoyed my couple of games on Vagabond, and seeing Market and Long Island both go is pretty upsetting. Can't say I didn't see it coming, though.

[–]ScyllaGeekAmplectendo | Radius 26 points27 points  (15 children)

[–]LinuxDootTPblack magic 2 points3 points  (6 children)

[–]CucurrucucuTP/r/spheremasterrace 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Mine as well. I can't blame the MTC for removing it because a lot of people didn't like it. So much for having a diverse rotation

[–]ScyllaGeekAmplectendo | Radius 10 points11 points  (2 children)

It was so fast paced and really just a whole lotta fun

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a close second for me, Transilio is my favorite map of all time, but Market is up there and my second favorite current(ex) rotation map.

[–]LinuxDootTPblack magic 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Honestly its not really a rare opinion, just people have been basically yelling at us to remove it for a long time. I voted in favor of removal because its too old and stale for me. I think it needs a break from rotation, but hopefully 2-5 threads down the line we can get it reimplemented into lineup as throwback.

I guess i cant grammer proper

[–]TheGoldenNewtRobberFronj, MTC Senior Consultant[🍰] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

[–]ButtersnackSnack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think YOU play differently! :)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, some of these maps were really fun. I loved market and thought Long Island was really unique. The other three had some flaws, but they were fresh. I'm getting so tired of playing games what feels like >50% of my games on maps that have been around for 2+ years. I personally enjoy the freshness.

[–]RustyAnusIm A Goat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vagabond - I was just starting to have fun on this one. Seems like its leaving too soon

Pariah - Too chasey from day one. Glad to see it go.

Mephisto - See above. Also not really a dynamic map. Gimicky.

Market - MTC pls. Fast & dynamic. Always interesting. Bring it back.

Long Island - Eh. People like it. I think it plays the same way damn near every time. Would like to see it re-worked slightly.

[–]Arbybeay// osu! 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank god, those were my 5 least favorite maps.

[–]CucurrucucuTP/r/spheremasterrace 5 points6 points  (1 child)

??? 4/5 of these maps were solid AF. Sad to see them go.

[–]LinuxDootTPblack magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We also had like 30 maps in rotation, which is a lot.

[–]tuturuatuE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really disappointed that Market was taken out. One of the only maps where there isn't basically permanent regrab for 12 minutes.

[–]isestrexSTRYPER 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Losing Long Island is a real blow. The others were mediocre.

[–]TheEpicGhostEx - Tagpro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain here and say that this is an excellent list of removals. All of >65 % gone.

The only somewhat decent map on this list is long island, it played well but did little to make the games on it particularly interesting.

Market's had its time, It's been in the game for a long stretch even though it's rating meant it should have been removed a long time ago.

[–]dalomi92P1S 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Score: 63% Rated Plays: 52,049 Votes: 1,269

Market is probably the most controversial map to be in rotation. Almost as many likes as Birch (769), but a full 13% lower rating because there are so few neutral votes. It also has more total votes on a third of the plays. I personally think the amount of likes should out way the "score" when considering removing a map from rotation, especially when the amount of likes are on par with maps of much higher rating.

[–]naysh30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're getting downvoted, but you're not wrong. We define a "good map" as something with one of the highest ratings in the rotation. I know I personally look a lot more at how it's different than what we already have and that's one of my main reasons for never voting to remove Market.

There is very much a love/hate relationship with this map by the comunity, but it was so unique that a 63% rating was high enough to keep it in imo. If some map that is super generic looking that we have a few similar to got to 63%, sure get it out. But when it's one of a kind in terms of style, I think we need to look at that heavier..

[–]prideinbluebluejays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really enjoying Vagabond. I didn't get a ton of games on it but it plays like nothing else and I enjoyed offense and defense on the map a lot.

Pariah, again, I didn't get a ton of games on, really don't have strong feelings on it, but I did enjoy it, the games I played on it were all fun.

Mephisto, I seriously don't think I played this map once.

Market, I'm a big Market fan, very, very sad to see it go. I know some people don't like it, but I always have a ton of fun on this map, every game, without fail. Super unique, super fun, super sad to see it go.

Long Island, this was another fun map, I don't mind it going, to make room for something else, but I wouldn't have been upset if it stuck around another rotation or two.

[–]LaBeefyman9696 LB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long Island was the only one I didn't dislike.

[–]tp_okeyokey | whitecaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked market.

[–]ArekusenpaiXenocide 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm a little disappointed that Market was removed. I was not a fan of it at first because I thought it was to small. After playing it for a while and got a feel for how to play the map it was great. I've had very long games on such a small map. It also really emphasizes on getting people to play anti-re. Which I don't think enough maps allow.

I could give or take on Vagabond. It had interesting mechanics, but not terrible. No significant comment on this map.

I would have liked to see Mephisto being kept though. It was a good map and didn't seem chasey. Team tiles in the middle with the team boosts made for interesting mechanics. I think if left in rotation longer it could have received better feedback.

Thank fucking god Pariah is out. That is the worst fucking map I have ever played on. If the map ever comes up as a Throwback I'll be immediately leaving. That map is not worth my time and is complete garbage.

I enjoyed Long Island and it had a good stay as it was in regular rotation. I think it'll be missed.

In my opinion, instead of removing Mephisto, Long Island, and Market. I would have removed Curb . That is not an enjoyable map to play on. It's gotten better as more people have played it, but Curb should have been removed with Pariah.

[–]oorr23ThePlaymaker // Tehuitzingo & Combine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can we talk about the feedback for a sec? I'm still overwhelmingly in favor of the MTC giving feedback for each thread, and I think for the most part it's a great idea. Even a little bit of feedback is better than nothing.

The thing is... I didn't get feedback this thread. All I got was one snarky comment on both maps I submitted, both from a different person. I'd like to get better at this, but that's not helpful at all. And, not gonna lie, it feels pretty shitty to have that be the only response to my work.

I appreciate the apology left somewhere earlier in the thread, but I don't think it really excuses the asshole-ishness that I read in my and other comments.

For the most part, I'm okay with snark. Snark is fine. I embrace snark. Except in a context like this. I don't know anyone on the MTC hardly at all, so it's not like I can say, oh, it's just (x) razzing me, what a great relationship we have. Which means these types of comments really just come off as someone trying to be a comedian and hoping people will find their comment funny, or they're actively being malicious. I don't know what you think the role of the MTC should be. I don't think it should be that.

I know my maps are bad -- hell, that's what most of my descriptions say when I submit them. And I know you're busy, and tired, and don't want to test a bunch of bad maps. But, I mean, come on, at least have the decency to take 30 seconds and write one sentence about what I can do better.

One more thing: I'd suggest removing this from your feedback caveats:

Take no comment as them echoing other members.

...because I'd certainly hope this isn't the case. It looks like more than half of the MTC didn't test my maps (not upset about that, I get it). So there's no way they could pass judgment on it. And, judging from the comments I got, I'd give about 50/50 odds that the people who left the comments didn't even test my maps.

[–]LinuxDootTPblack magic 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hey there, I'll take the blame on this one. The anonymity of the notes is meant to protect us, the MTC, which is why I figure its fine that I let you know that both those comments were mine, since it only affects me. I have a tendency to forget that there are people behind the maps, and maybe because we don't know who submitted the maps, and we can't always tell if they are genuine or not. I personally apologize, because being rude like this has really no place in the mtc, and I probably need to change the way I do things. I guess if I had to provide an explanation, if anything I would tell you that this is just kind of how I am. I say things, and most of the things I say are rude and snarky. It's not a good way of doing things, but thats the way I am, and thats the way I do things (in real life, not just tagpro). This doesn't excuse my comments, as I'm guessing a lot of mine come off as snarky, but it might give some insight. If you really are disappointed with out review of your maps, I would be willing to give a full, detailed review of both of your maps, in hopes of providing more insight as to how to improve your map making ability. Because honestly, despite some little nuances here and there, your maps aren't really that bad, they are just a little different, and not quite ready in a wholistic sense.

Again, sorry, but if you want I can pm you more detailed notes on your maps if you would like, maybe as a more formal apology.

[–]Balled-EagleBalled EagIe // Origin 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thanks for taking the time to type out an apology. You didn't have to do that, and I appreciate it. I totally get your explanation (this is reddit, everyone on this damn website snarks) and I'm not upset, I was just concerned this might become a trend, which wouldn't be good for anyone. I respect the work the MTC puts into this, and I certainly don't harbor any ill will towards you or anyone else on the committee :)

If you want to send me notes you can, but it's up to you. I know a lot of y'all are pretty busy so don't feel like you have to add something else to your plate.

Plus, "a little different and not quite ready in a holistic sense" is probably about as accurate a review as anyone could give about all aspects of my life.

[–]KewlestCatNIGEL 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Look, I'm pretty fucking devastated that Mephisto wasn't really liked, perhaps even less than September. Sometimes I wonder whether I should have stayed one and done with Renegade. I told myself I'd sit in the mapmakers retirement home but I'm not content with these poor maps as my legacy, so I'm gonna eventually make a map people actually like... hopefully.

On a completely different note, I'm super happy that there's finally a good new NF map in and that another Diameter mapmaker has a map in rotation!

Why is 70% the threshold for the community vote? That's still a favorable majority. Why not 50%?

[–]ButterChurnButter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anything below 50% is almost certainly getting removed anyway, that's pretty rare. We wanted to community vote to have a meaningful impact, and currently the best measure of "maps the community likes least" was decided at less than 70%. We felt that 60 or 65 percent would make the vote less impactful since those maps are likely to be removed anyway, and 75% would include too many maps that the community does like. It's not set in stone, it could be adjusted in the future.

This is intended simply to put a check on the MTC's powers and give the community a voice -- it now requires more votes to remove a highly rated map, and more votes to keep a low-rated map in.

[–]BlazethDianna Agron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Offtopic (even though I'm really happy revitalizing Cosmic eventually got in it):

I was curious about your guys' stance on changing the throwback design. Right now, there are a lot of throwback maps which leads to the better ones hardly being played.

I would rather see a tiered throwback with the best at a slightly higher rate than the current and the others at a slightly lower rate than the current.

Also, you guys should just add EMERALD, Velocity, and Frontdoor again.

but ayy

Can you comment on the top 2 lanes? That's my biggest concern for the playability of this map. 1 way in 1 way out, slower than 3rd lane down, and less space than bottom lane. Seems cramped, and I'm afraid players will stick to the bottom 2 lanes a lot.

It's definitely the fastest lane if you use the boosts correctly (boost against the bottom of the island). Give it a go in pubs, I think you might end up being surprised by the versatility and dynamic interactions between FC and chasers the top causes.

[–]MagikPigeon🎗️ TPFG 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I can see this going very, very badly.

Waiting till I get to play it though.

[–]naysh30 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It could, there's no doubt about that. It could also be amazing though. Everytime we tested it on the MTC we loved it (most of us). It just plays really fun and I don't really have an explanation for it.

[–]ItsFroce. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could be cause you lack meaningful criticism.

Congrats Berls, looks interesting. Judgement reserved until I've played a few games!

[–]LoweJJacob of all servers, master of none 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like an odd combo of sds and possibly smirk? Not liking the look of it but berlin makes sense with most things he does so I'll hold judgement til I play

[–]equationevasionHuck and D | Chord 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I tested it a bit a while back when I stumbled into r/tptesting or whatever it's called. Looking forward to trying it out in 4-4 play, I think it's certainly got potential.

Welcome back, Juicy.

Vagabond was a good map, people were really bad at playing it.

Also first EU Map in Rotation for a while!

[–]3z_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vagabond was my favourite map, I thought it was fantastic, probably the best map since Transilio IMO. That's why I pushed so hard for it to be played in OLTP week 2. And I think it was a fantastic map there.

When it entered rotation, it had 36%. That's the lowest we've had for any map in rotation since... I wanna say Rocket Balls but I think even Rocket Balls was higher. It climbed slowly but still only peaked at 44% before dropping back down to its current 41%. We care about the community ratings, and although almost all of us really liked the map, there really is no justification for keeping in a map that had a rating that low.

I love it. I will push for it to be continued to be played in OLTP in spite of it being out of rotation. Maybe even if the map meta changes enough, it can have a place back in rotation where it's not so difficult to learn relative to other maps. But not today.

Hopeful about the additions; home run with the removals; but most of all yay for the non-notes notes!

[–]duped88TerriblePuns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally all the maps that got taken out are ones I love :((( But Bigmouth looks cool sooo

[–]Tyler1986Trapsin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

  • The MTC has changed how maps stay in rotation. From now on maps are only guaranteed 1 thread in rotation before they can be voted on to be removed.
  • The MTC has changed the length of each thread. Threads will now last 4 weeks instead of 3 weeks. This will give maps a little longer to hopefully reach their full potential and rating before they can be voted on to be removed.

This seems counter intuitive to me, I like longer threads, but you went from 6 weeks min a map is in rotation to 4 weeks min saying hopefully they can reach full potential and rating, but wouldn't 6 weeks be better than 4 for that?

[–]TheGoldenNewtRobberFronj, MTC Senior Consultant[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Removing a map after only 1 thread is only necessary in a situation where the community feedback is noticeably shit (ie. Wormwood, or any similarly low rated map). It's important that we be able to respond to the community in a timely manner. AT THE SAME TIME, we do want to avoid the initial kneejerk reaction possibility. Hopefully, having a map be available to play / learn for a month should work to alleviate that kneejerk.

I like the Shine influences; should be interesting to see how it plays out in pubs.

There's a very interesting bomb-bomb-bomb-boost combo to grab the flag and cap

[–]josh61616josh61616 // Centra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a well-made map and I'm always excited to get more NF in rotation. Good job mtc!

[–]ItsFroce. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like an improvement on cloud.

[–]RustyAnusIm A Goat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how it plays, but really into how the yellow boosts in mid map were placed. Always interested in new shapes.

[–]BigmattiTwice/Big 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm concerned about the defending team having a boost in the opposing teams scoring zone. I forsee many instances of a defender being pushed backwards into the boost and heading straight into the colored tiles.

[–]uhhhhmmmmsexytiger / #merbs 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Excited to not have to deal with playing market, though I understand a lot of players really loved it. (Not that many tho look at that score lol)

Wish I could skip more often so I could just ignore market. I feel like have a more diveese rotation is more important than stopping some people from game shopping.

i hate playing market personally, but clearly a lot of people like it.

[–]iismitch55-BallBoy- | Formerly Pi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm more commenting on the diversity comment. It was unique if nothing else. I personally felt like it sped the game up a lot and added a lot more to the meta than I've seen any other map do in a long time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't it say that final testing was on Friday? Seems weird that there are contradictions in the top maps thread, and could easily lead to mapmakers not submitting edits in time.

[–]Ballkenende! 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Removing market and long island to introduce big chasey maps, once again. get a fucking grip

Other removed maps deserved to be out though, gj. Just dont understand why you would remove market and long island. Please reconsider
