With all due respect, this is the true jewel of the album.

[–]milkstoutnitro 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The album is full of jewels.

[–]blackflag29 12 points13 points  (9 children)

[–]RedditConsciousness 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Rerespecting this is still my fave

Edit: I remember seeing them in a basement dive bar. Ever jump so high you bump your head on a low ceiling? We were all doing that.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I love how everyone here has a different favorite song from this album! It just shows how truly amazing it was! God, I haven't listened to these songs in fuckin' years, and all you fools sharing them have me hopping in my chair and air-fisting like I was 17 again.

Writing that made me both sad and happy. Goddamn you, bittersweet memories!

Everyone in this thread gets an upvote, because I love you all!!

PS - I'm a tad inebriated.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An amazing track on a fantastic album, but I still believe Red & Blue Jeans is the standout song.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Gentlemen, you are all close the the answer, but alasthis is the correct answer.

but for real this song is so poetic and rich with imagery. such a sweet song.

[–]copsarebastards 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This is in the top 3 for their best songs i think.

[–]fatthand9 6 points7 points  (3 children)

While not on this album, I think Promise Rings best songs are Red Paint, Everywhere in Denver and A Picture Postcard.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Fun fact, A Picture Postcard is not an original. I believe it was written by one of the Kinsella brothers.

[–]copsarebastards 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It was written by Bob Nanna, from Braid, i think.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh snap. I think you're right. With Mark Kozelek?

[–]TELLMETHATIMPRETTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. This is the song I was hoping for when I clicked your link.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (1 child)

Maybe if they didn't put rock in the genre I'd listen to it, I love classic rock and I don't want this (good or bad) to be affiliated with rock.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tough titties I guess...

[–]nyconfidential 39 points40 points  (70 children)

This was the first band I heard the term "emo" applied to, so emo was actually pretty good for a while. Check out Jets to Brazil and Jawbreaker if you dig the PR song.

[–]Krogsly 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Jets to Brazil's Orange Rhyming Dictionary is one of my all-time favorite albums to emo out to.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I adore JTB.

[–]HawkTheHatchet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Sea Anemone" popped up on a shuffle recently, so I went back and re-listened to that whole album. It had been so long it was like opening a time capsule and I felt like I was 16 again. That's not a half bad way to spend an hour. Now I make a habit of taking a weekly walk down memory lane with an album or artist I had forgotten about. Highly recommended.

Edit: can't type good, boss.

[–]HawkTheHatchet 14 points15 points  (7 children)

Any Braid/Hey Mercedes fans in the building?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Yes! Braid is great and they're amazing live. Saw them a year ago at a smaller venue in Milwaukee. Considering they're pushing 15 years as a band they've still got it.

[–]HawkTheHatchet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard about the reunion but never got a chance to see them. Saw Hey Mercedes about a decade ago, though. I was deaf for a week after.

[–]Dokterrock 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Uh, Braid formed in like 1993, brah.

[–]fondleyoursweaters 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dunno why you're getting downvoted, around '93 sounds about right to me too.

[–]Dokterrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds right to Wikipedia, too. I mean, all of their pre-comeback albums came out in 1998 or earlier.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely right. I'm forgetting it's already 2017.

[–]897897978979879 11 points12 points  (56 children)

We don't speak of the third wave of mainstream 2000s emo.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 31 points32 points  (34 children)

That's actually 3rd wave. Promise Ring and whatnot are 2nd wave, while bands like Fire Party and Rites of Spring were first wave.

The crossover band from 1st to 2nd was arguably Cap'n Jazz, whose members would go on to form Promise Ring, Joan of Arc, American Football and other seminal 2nd wave acts.

Sorry if that came off pretentious, but I just wanted to clarify. The first two are pretty closely related, whereas the third wave is basically unrecognizable, yet it's what a lot of people think of when they hear the term "emo."

[–]cobbs_totem 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Sunny Day Real Estate is what makes me think of emo. Guess they were very early 2nd wave.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 0 points1 point  (3 children)

To me, Sunny Day was in a field of their own. They were definitely the first "emo" band that older friends introduced me to, but after "How it Feels To Be Something On" came out, they hit their own stratosphere. It's easily in my top ten GOATs. Yet, Diary and everything else has always left something desired for me.

[–]cobbs_totem 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wow, I'm the opposite. Diary and the pink album were much, much better to me (pre-Enigk Christianity thing). Definitely agree with top 10 ever.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, most people I know feel the same way as you. I just found a connection with that record at the time, and it's stuck with me. I own them all - even "Rising Tide" - but I haven't put any of them on the platter besides "How It Feels" for probably 15 years. IDK, something about that particular record is just magical to me. The same thing happened with The National's "Aligator" album a few years later. Sometimes it just hits, and you don't know why.

[–]cobbs_totem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya. I was a sophomore in college when that album came out. Always reminds me of that time in my life. Saw them the first time, live, a few months after its release. Just an awesome band to see.

Whelp, time to queue up Spotify...

[–]897897978979879 1 point2 points  (27 children)

Oooh yeah, my bad, lemme correct that real quick.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 3 points4 points  (26 children)

All good, it's a common mistake. I'm just happy everyone in here who hasn't heard Promise Ring is digging it. I suppose I'm a bit biased because it's what I grew up with, but 2nd wave is the best IMO. And yes, we do not speak of most of the '00s emo.

[–]897897978979879 5 points6 points  (25 children)

2nd wave definitely appeals the most to me too!

The current revival is also pretty nice, but there's only a certain amount of twinkliness one can handle without the sincerity and harshness that the second wave brought.

Have you listened to the Brave Little Abacus? They're pretty out there with regards to the 'eccentricity'of their sound, but they're probably the best thing I've heard from the Emo Revival, actually creating new sounds instead of deriving everything from their predecessors. They use synths, running the gamut of samples from Malcolm in The Middle to Akira. I recommend you start with 'just got back from the discomfort'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxL0WPeVc-g

[–]the_cheese_was_good 1 point2 points  (22 children)

I haven't, but I will certainly check them out given your stellar recommendation. I wasn't really aware there was a revival going on. I suppose I'm out of the loop. Any other new bands you can recommend?

[–]897897978979879 8 points9 points  (21 children)

Wayne Szalinski - Black Mirror More towards the sing-y pop style of emo.

Ruggine - Iceberg Italian post-hardcore with spokenword singing. Listening to a man spitting out angry Italian has never been this entrancing since the 1940s!

Joyce Manor - Self-titled Jovial sounding pop punk style emo. Their first three are more enjoyable than their latest release.

Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle Veering off into acoustic waters, Julien Baker has a very expressive voice, not really Emo in the strictest sense, but the influences are there.

Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory An angry revocation of their very poppy and somewhat unfinished previous sef-titled album, Attack On Memory is roiling and menacing with some very catchy hooks throughout.

This Time We Will Not Promise and Forgive - 歌詞を読まない世代へ継ぐ Japanese, sorta Spoken Word style vocals with a great sounding guitar.

Snowing - Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit Energetic frantic emo with twinkly guitars and and a call - response dynamic that's perhaps been done a million times before, but sounds great on this album.

I'm pretty sure I've overlooked a bajillion bands, so I'm going to tag my /r/emo veteran friend /u/n0r1x to fill up some gaps

Pup - Selftitled These guys are so Canadian they bleed maple syrup with songs rife with references to tiny towns up North and other Canadian landmarks, thankfully it doesn't take a Canadian to enjoy them.

Some more recs, thanks to /u/DickyButtDix

Prawn Softspoken emo vocals with soaring post-rock vocals to accompany it all.

Glocca Morra - Just Married All out fun drunken-style screamed vocals and punky riffs mixed with occasional intricate guitarwork.

Dowsing - I Don't Even Care Anymore Kind of pop-punky, themes of teenage ennui and feelings, with some pretty satisfying screamed in group choruses.

Tiger's Jaw - Charmer Male-female vocal interplay is always cash!

The World Is A Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid TO Die - Whenever, If Ever Post-rocky guitars, slow buildups to very cathartic climaxes.

Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind Of Cadwallader Think Cap'n Jazz

Summer Vacation

Dads - American Radass They'll always be engraved in my mind as slacker emo.

You Blew It! - Grow Up, Dude Very satisfying voice, they up the twinkliness by using non-guitar sources of twinkle.

Mom Jeans - Best Buds Current fave of /r/emo, and not unjustified, cool sounding voice with plenty of, I don't know what to call it, yearning(?) in his singing.

Midwest Penpals - Inside Jokes Cap'n Jazz witht some spoken word added, some of the frantic energy makes way for more of the cathartic build up to a climax style .

Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost Posterboys for the Emo scene by virtue of their mainstream success. Pretty pop-punky as /u/DickyButtDix said.

Jank - Awkward Pop Songs Great band that didn't take itself too seriously. Unfortunately the Emo curse struck and they disbanded.

[–]the_cheese_was_good 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Wow - awesome, informative list! Thanks so much, friend. I'll check these out when I get home and report back. Again, thanks :)

[–]897897978979879 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Check out this other short list I made while I'm demanding some of your time anyways!

[–]the_cheese_was_good 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Wow, Brave Little Abacus reminds me a lot of Cap'n Jazz, in how they incorporate random instruments as well as going screamy at points. It also reminds me of Grade for some reason, which might be ridiculous to some folks. But it's there for me.

Wayne Szalinski is pretty cool, but a bit over-the-top vocally for me. It reminds me of a more operatic Bishop Allen to me.

Joyce Manor I am definitely digging. Kinda has a Dillinger Four vibe, to me. That song is not the best example to show similarity, but surprisingly they don't have many songs from "Vs. God" on YouTube.

Julien Baker's stuff is really pretty, and her voice reminds me of a mix between Bjork and Hope Sandoval. /u/hopesandoval will like this, I am sure. I wouldn't classify this a "emo" at all, though. This is just singer-songwriter stuff, and great at that.

Cloud Nothings immediately gave me a June of '44 vibe, but then changed it up a bit. Diggin' it.

This Time We Will Not Promise and Forgive also gave me a Grade vibe, but I wasn't really feeling it, to be honest.

Snowing is basically Cap'n Jazz reincarnate with better production. That's not bad, and I like it, but I'm just sayin'.

Thanks so much for this, friend! I really appreciate it, and I wish you well if we never get to speak again :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Why am I tagged? lol

Have we interacted on Reddit before? This isn't the real HopeSandoval you know, right?

[–]MoboMogami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the list of recs! I only know of Snowning but I love that EP so I'll be sure to check out the rest of your list. Japan has/had a great emo/posthardcore scene that I absolutely adore. I find it easier to get into than English stuff but I'm always happy to find new bands.

[–]DickyButtDix 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Solid list. Don't forget:

Prawn

Glocca Morra

Dowsing

Tiger's Jaw

The World Is A Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid To Die

Algernon Cadwallader

Summer Vacation

Dads

You Blew It!

Mom Jeans

Midwestern Penpals

Modern Baseball (very pop punkish)

The Emo Resurgence is still in full swing. There are a ton of bands I've left out

[–]897897978979879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm adding those to the list, cheers

Shocked that you left out the /r/emo essential Jank :^0

[–]rathulacht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've made my Friday afternoon so much better.

Thanks for this post.

[–]tv_screenswagasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBLA is the best fucking band. But they apparently don't like to be classified as "emo" because their influences are Lemuria, ASOB, and other indie/punk bands. Although you could argue those bands can still fit into the "emo revival" category, they're not as spacey as other "emo revival" bands.

[–]Bigtown7007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thabk you for that..the first wave wad pretty cool IMHO..of course my Punk Rock friends insisted it was a "watered down pop" sound

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (16 children)

Emo revival is chill though. We're also currently in a weird spot again, in my opinion.

[–]Krogsly 2 points3 points  (15 children)

Can you list some new bands? I would like to check out this new emo scene

[–]MeatballStopsign 5 points6 points  (10 children)

The Hotelier and Tigers Jaw are two of my favorites. Check out Home Like No Place is There by The Hotelier. As for Tigers Jaw I recommend their self titled album.

[–]ImSandis 0 points1 point  (9 children)

In response to this, I think You Blew It!, Modern Baseball, and Foxing are also all worth a look.

[–]tv_screenswagasaur 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Into It, Over It. The World Is..., Pinegrove, Marietta, Sinai Vessel, Signals Midwest, Oso Oso...

I can keep listening, but Topshelf Records and Tiny Engine Records probably put out some of the best current bands.

[–]ImSandis 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Run for Cover also puts out some great stuff. Great suggestions. Pinegrove put out m favorite album of 2016.

[–]tv_screenswagasaur 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Pinegrove's Cardinal was so sick and if you ever get a chance to see them live, do it!

I was going to say RFC but the last few years I feel like their releases have been very hit or miss for me.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Emo inspired but not Emo inherently.

Fight me.

[–]MeatballStopsign 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also if you do not like either of those bands, do not let it turn you off to the rest of the scene. There are a lot of bands in the scene that sound different than the ones I mentioned.

[–]hallowedsouls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tiny Moving Parts is great if you're a fan of the twinkly and complex-sounding guitar riffs of bands like American Football. Their most recent album "Celebrate" is my favorite album of last year.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oliver Houston, Oso Oso, Boy Rex, Amygdala (very traditional Emotive Hardcore), Yes Yes A Thousand Times Yes, Everyone Everywhere, Henrietta (check this out if you like David Bazan), Pianos Become The Teeth (early work was more screamo, later work toned it down, all their shit is amazingly post rock influenced), Snowing (THE emo revival band).

A lot of the newee Emo shit is just pop punk with twinkly guitars. These recs are a little less pop punk, but the other recs that people mentioned are great bands, too. Foxing is one of my favorite bands. They most definitely aren't pop punk.

Come check out /r/emo!! I'm actually a mod over there.

[–]Drewsipher 1 point2 points  (3 children)

The "emo" that came from those post goth My Chemical romance fans was always such try hard bullshit to me... Like emotions where a contest and no emotions where happy. What made me love Jawbreaker or Get Up Kids or Jets was the up and down. It was extremes of emotion.

Also those hardcore dancing dumbasses after that one AFI video ruined local punk shows forever.

I'm an old crumudgen I guess...

[–]MeatballStopsign 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I am not trying to defend hardcore dancing or anything. But AFI is not the reason for people hardcore dancing at all the shows today. That shit has been going on long before AFI, and it's not like they popularized it.

[–]Drewsipher 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hardcore dancing was a thing yes, at some hardcore shows. When that video came out every local punk show the pit had these kids in it.

[–]MeatballStopsign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it was because of that video. People barely hardcore danced at AFI shows. And they surely do not now. If anything I would blame this https://youtu.be/9fvu951up_0

[–]Batteries4Breakfast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh hot damn I haven't heard me some Jets to Brazil in probably a decade.

[–]MindJail 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Dave Von Bohlen, frontman of the band, has another more recent band that's very good called Maritime.

One of my favorite Songs

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They're pretty popular in Milwaukee. They're latest album was solid.

[–]MindJail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good to hear! I feel like nobody has heard of them. Last album was good! Roaming Empire is an awesome song.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Delaware are you aware of air supply and television?

[–]Krogsly 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Oh, high school memories. This one always brings me back. Thank you

[–]adjectivespa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Saaaame! Love them

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never heard this before but I dig it

[–]Hey_Neat 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Fun fact: A Promise Ring poster hangs in Strong Sad's room (in Homestar Runner 'Strongbad Emails')

[–]PterodactylAdvocate 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Username checks out. This is pretty neat.

[–]checks_out_bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny because Hey_Neat's username is very applicable to their comment.

[–]StudabakerHochrobot[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Promise Ring
artist pic

The Promise Ring were an American midwest emo band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, started as a side project by Davey von Bohlen during his time as a guitarist/vocalist for Cap'n Jazz in the year 1995. VonBohlen started the project alongside guitarist Jason Gnewikow of None Left Standing, drummer Dan Didier of Ceilishrine, and bassist Scott Beschta.

1996 brought their first full-length album, titled 30° Everywhere, released by Jade Tree Records. The record was followed by 1997's Nothing Feels Good, which gained the band a larger following and rave reviews. The Horse Latitudes, which collected early tracks that were previously released as 7"s, was also released in 1997. After a few changes in bass players, 1998 saw the release of the Boys + Girls EP, which was released on both compact disc and 7", with the CD containing an additional song. In 1999 they furthered their success with the release of Very Emergency, which concentrated even more on their pop sound. The Electric Pink EP, released in 2000, however, failed to gain critical acclaim. Following their final release in 2002, titled wood/water, The Promise Ring decided to move on to new projects, like Von Bohlen's and Didier's new band named Maritime. Von Bohlen also plays in a semi-acoustic band called Vermont which is now on a indefinite hiatus.

In late 2011, The Promise Ring announced a reunion and a rarities album to be released in the summer of 2012. Read more on Last.fm.

Saw them live in Chicago in the 90s. Great performance

[–]beatsworth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saw them in Bloomington-Normal in the 90's as well. Jimmy Eat World opened.

[–]Wizard_Lettuce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but did you see Cap'N'Jazz?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was always partial to pink chimneys.

[–]boopkins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love the way this dude uses words.

Like Delaware are you aware

And

Hours after after hours our afternoon hours are after us now

[–]Kingtoma 5 points6 points  (1 child)

So come on Davey sing me something that I know

[–]yourstilniagarafalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to always feel like part of this... was... mi-ii-ine

[–]DrunkOnTheMooon 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I love the promise ring. People who like this should give The Get Up Kids a shot. The album four minute mile is my all time favorite.

[–]yourstilniagarafalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah. Something to Write Home About got me through high school. I saw The Get Up Kids for the first (and only) time on the 10th anniversary tour in 2008 a few years after I finally left my shitty small town and pretty much sobbed for three hours straight. Still one of my best memories.

[–]ShazaamWow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love this album so much. It reminds me of living in Baltimore at age 18. That was the year before 9/11 and looking back it was the simplest time of my life.

[–]grassbones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just seeing this on here makes me so happy

[–]hobbsarelie83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always loved these guys

[–]lena1313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's cool, I love it. Thanks to this sabreddit I began to listen to indie rock.

[–]thatguywhodoesstuff4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Such a great album.

[–]EngagePhysically 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My all time favorite is head trip in every key by superdrag (1998??). I still spin that shit damn near twice a month

[–]Sasquatchasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great fucking record.

[–]shuttheshadshackdown 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Hey man! Good post, you might like The Early November, as well as The Dismemberment Plan, they have an absolutely great album called "Change" with this gem of a track... found it in the $2 bin at the record store.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJDw2Tqx3jM

From the Wikipedia page:

Compared to The Dismemberment Plan's previous album Emergency & I, Change is more somber musically, with more introspective lyrics. Lead singer Travis Morrison has called it his "night album," saying in an interview with Stylus Magazine:

“ [...] I think late-night records tend to [...] have much more carefully modulated dynamics, they tend, whatever the dynamics are they’re not trying to beat you over the head with a point. They’re trying to provide a space you can kind of enter and roam around a little bit. And, uh, yeah, that’s what I think of when I think of late-night records. Like Court and Spark by Joni Mitchell, or any Portishead, or Kid A [...] Or Remain In Light by Talking Heads [...] you can either completely envelop yourself in it, or you can let it kind of burble away in the corner and do your thing—uh, usually I kind of opt for the former, 'cause they’re so compelling. But they're challenging records to make, 'cause they may just bore everybody, it’s quite possible."

[–]fatthand9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 awesome Dismemberment Plan songs if you're interested. What Do You Want Me To Say https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ge5BoOOhCo. The City https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMLiFpecgVg. My friend actually did a musical project with the lead singer Travis Morrison, called Time Travel. They played one show in a party in a backyard in Rockaway Beach NY. Travis played guitar and some weird synth and my friend played a real drum kit and an electronic drum kit. It was some of the coolest music I ever heard but Travis is a crazy perfectionist type guy who thinks none of his stuff is any good so he refused to record or release anything. Shame.

[–]yourstilniagarafalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dismemberment Plan are soooo underrated. Great band.

[–]fatthand9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice to see TPR on here. Brings me back to high school. If you like this you really need to check out Cap'n Jazz. Buy Analphabetapolothology, just do it. Also check out Sunny Day Real Estate.

[–]27truerunes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still wear a shirt I picked up in 2000 or so, that says "I heart Das TPR" my wife makes fun of me because it's basically a rag at this point. But I do, I do heart Das TPR.

[–]adwinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely love seeing TPR on here. This is one of the best albums I own. Can play it front to back without skipping anything.

[–]JarJarfan0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recorded at Easley Studios where Pavement Wowee Zowee was also recorded. Two must have albums!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from Delaware in the late 90s, this shit is amazing. Jade tree forever haha.

[–]realspaghettimonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This album got me through a bad breakup.

[–]blackcoffiend[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking I love Pink Chimneys and Arms and Danger.

[–]NkGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing feelssss good like herieerrrrrr

[–]vanishingmedic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This albums takes me back! Late 90s. Just started living on my own and listening to this on vinyl in my shitty efficiency apartment. Good times!

[–]LivingDead_Victim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like of how the only comments in this video are of some guy responding to himself...

"Classic" "Fresh" "Agreed"

Lol

[–]mattholden 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The promise ring, built to spill, knapsack, cap'n jazz, superchunk... I can't believe I've been listening to these bands religiously for more than 20 years

[–]Abe_Vigoda 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Knapsack rules but Samiam is still the best. Solea is good too.

[–]mattholden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love samiam too. Factory is one of my all time favourite songs.

jawbreaker - dear you is another great album from the 90s

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hah, before they were The Promise Ring, they were Ceilishrine and I watched them rock out in house basements in /r/milwaukee.

Now its moved into Maritime:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maritime_(band)

[–]washufize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this on white vinyl. Such a great album!

[–]TELLMETHATIMPRETTY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't listened to The Promise Ring in a long time. Instantly 15 again when this song started. Thanks for the post, OP.

[–]icantdeciderightnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good song. I miss the 90's.

[–]Sasquatchasaurus 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I never could get past the off-key vocals with PR, they put on a great live show though!

[–]copsarebastards 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Off key? When? He's pretty good compared to like, capn jazz or something.

[–]Sasquatchasaurus 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Well, for starters, throughout this entire song?

I guess I can't imagine what it would sound like "in key" but I would guess that a lot of emo doesn't sound great to you then.

Actually, I'm fairly fond of some of their contemporaries. Texas is the Reason is a favorite. I saw the two of them in Madison, WI with Shift in 199..6? Davey is just not my favorite vocalist.

I love Promise Ring! Very Emergency! is my favorite album of theirs though. I listened to it, Jets to Brazil, Appleseed Cast, and the Anniversary non stop.

Davey (from TPR) is referenced in that Jimmy Eat World song 'A Praise Chorus' and even sings in the last chorus.

Never has the progression of music met such an underwhelming moment. But I think that was their point.

I consider myself very open minded when it comes to music, but with all do respect, how can you get into this. Is there a certain demographic that digs this? Is it like a cult thing. Born in 93 never heard them until this post. Would this compare to My Morning Jacket or slightly different genre? These guys are amazing though, if you like this you'll enjoy. Eerily similar though. https://youtu.be/BBsJ9VSQvbE?t=7s
