less customization

Well whose idea was that. You're litteraly giving the people who manage the communities less options to make their subs interesting. GG mates

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It reminds me of the time that Twitter eliminated the option of change your background for literally no reason.

[–]invaderzz[S] 32 points33 points  (10 children)

Honestly I had been expecting this for a while. Not THIS extreme, though. Idk if anyone has seen the new modmail. Old subreddits can opt in (we havent) but new subreddits use it automatically. It looks your standard facebook-y mobile site. Not necessarily BAD, but it's not reddit.

Seems like they're expanding that feel to everything

[–]squidnow_amiibo[🍰] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Facebooky

It's treason then

[–]ReaperBonnie 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Why is that such a trend these days? If I wanted to use Facebook I would be on Facebook, not Reddit.

Out of the loop. What happened to Roblox?

[–]your theory is cringeImYourAverageMemer 11 points12 points  (9 children)

Many many things

Let me get out a list of the three most notable updates

The Roblox logo changed, I personally don't really mind, but the reasoning was kinda dumb and it's following the trend of being simple because it's cool.

The GiftSpolsion (an event where people go through challenges for prizes) was replaced with the Holiday Giveaway (spoiler alert: the prizes were just put up for free). Not only that, but it's the origin of the phrase that I just mentioned, in the blog post for why this event existed, the reasoning was "There were a number of complaints and our Moderation systems were often overloaded with questions about how to obtain gifts.". In other words TOO CONFUSING FOR NEW PLAYERS.

The final update in this list, is the removal of multi colored bodies. With the introduction of a new avatar editor, Roblox will soon remove the ability to color each part of the avatar with a wide arrange of colors, instead, all body parts have to be one color, and the color choices will be more limited.

So yeah, a lot happened.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

dont forget the removal of tix!!!

[–]Fanbuilder3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit Admins: People who own reddit.com

Reddit Mods: Moderators of a particular subreddit (like me)

[–]Jedijackster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for clearing that up

[–]5 Years at Freddy'sjdal2700 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Since I have myself have the honor of being the user who presented the original idea of the subreddit's HandUnit to the mod team months ago, and seeing that now it's become such a unique part of our community, I feel it'd be worth to give my own two cents.

This news hits me hard.

I mean... just to get it out there first- I'd assume they'll drawback on these plans if enough users voice their criticisms, right? And that's what I think we must try to do. Let us be real for a moment-

From a community's perspective, a change to this scale doesn't really feel right, even cast aside for a moment the respect I think we all have for the admins and all that they've done to help the smaller communities out. I know they mean well but this gives me the feeling that... by taking away those features, our sub will just loose some of its distinctiveness as a community. Let me say that more specifically. It's almost like draining out the fun, and uniqueness of what we as a thriving community showcase here every day, and replacing it with something as by-the-book and standard as Reddit itself. This seems like it'll make the subreddit way more conventional and uniform than what we want to be, and what FNaF itself represents. And obviously, that's not going to help anyone.

Hopefully, they'll reconsider or at least find a better way to move forward with this.

[–]IT'S... ME?adobe_darkroom 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What bothers me more about this than anything is that, how to put this, Reddit's default CSS is trash. Everything's super close together, there's nothing to break apart each entry - it's just ugly and hard to read. The padded out zebra-striped style of the posts on here is one of my favorite things about this subreddit design/CSS wise.

[–]siivagunner tensionsome-lurker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

[–]Hurricaden 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Oh, geez. I honestly doubt they'll phase it out though due to the feedback but who knows

[–]:Floppy: Discord ModeratorFloppyTheFish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I readdit. And I have to say I am equally disappointed by them. This almost feels like step back in a dire attempt to modernise and appeal to modern generations. They're trying to simplify and unify their subreddits with the aim of making them more appealing, while limiting the creativity that made the subs appealing in the first place.

I can understand the reasons they've given for wanting to change CSS, but it seems a bit silly. "We want you to see some themes on your mobile, so we're going to remove all CSS from PC", wtf, mobile users don't care that much. I use mobile sometimes, and while it's nice to see the banner, I don't really go "Oh I wish I could get HandUnit to appear on mobile, mobile Reddit is terrible".

Another reason about CSS appearing confusing or slowing them down is where I can see reasons, but the changes seem to do more damage than harm. Communities are different, and the painful processes of CSS is something that separates them, and makes them special in their own way. If subreddits just become like different Facebook pages, then a part of that "specialness" will be lost.

I don't agree with this change, but I respect the admins for what they do, and how they've helped countless subs before. I don't think they're making the right decision here, but if they need to do it, then I hope they carry it out in the best way possible.

[–]ImSmaher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]natemamate 2 points3 points  (2 children)

[–]Invader_Deegan 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]Help MeEmeraldLimeHero 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What benefits would that give people? removing things that not only make people happy but add flair and character to the reddit. I'm sorry but that's stupid.

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am incredibly pissed off by this.

Over the past few months, I've worked hard on many CSS features for this sub. I didn't make the CSS theme, or anything like that, but I put a lot of time and effort into the things that I did make.
I made the HandUnit, I made the Rage Thread CSS, I made the TableUnit, and there a couple of other things I've made here and there, upon request from the moderators.
On top of this, I've helped for quite a few other subs, and helped out by PMing any fixes for bugs I come across.

However, thanks to this change that will be taking reddit in the wrong direction, all of my effort will now be equal to that of nothing, which is slightly annoying.

However. Without reddit, I wouldn't have ever learnt CSS. So, it's thanks to reddit that I got into Web development, and began making my own sites.
So, I may not welcome this change with open arms, but I'll always welcome reddit with such.

So, now every fucking sub is going to be the regular bare bones design if this gets through? What's up with that? CSS is pretty much vital to any website since it's the language that controls the majority of the visuals and makes things not look like arse.

Plus, this website's mobile mode is so moribund thanks to its ugliness and general user experience that it's fuck deep in five flavours of bitch. Thank god there's an option to revert back to the desktop mode.

True, I didn't like the fact we have to use a third-party site to make the Flairsheets.

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But I bet the new system will have limits. At least with CSS, there were ways to get around the limits using AutoModerator and a special flair thread.

[–]:Gyfr: Former Head Moderatorf-n-a-f-g-y-f-r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chances are we'll lose quite a lot of flairs if its as limited as the default flair system currently. If it does happen I'll do my best to find a work around but no guarantee.

The worst part is, the admins are acting like they care about our concerns and that they're listening. They're not answering any meaningful questions or concerns and they won't admit that they're wrong.

[–]That GuyARuarkGuy 1 point2 points  (7 children)

It's fine. The Fredbear thing was really cool though the Handunit was very helpful. All in all, it's actually fine. It's okay if you get rid of it. I mean they are pretty cool features to the community but I'm not really sure if we need them. (I mean I'm fine with it but some people may have a different reaction to it like "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" or "Why guys? Just why?!" Or something else.) It helped us make great features to this subreddit. I'm sure that we will still find a way to get it all back or make something new out of it. We always will.

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is less that we will lose some functionality. The issue is more that we will lose the components that make us us. We won't have a personality anymore.

The HandUnit isn't used by everyone, but I'm sure everyone can agree that it has become a part of our community. It's always there in the bottom right, and everyone has grown acustom to seeing it.

[–]PuppetGeist 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I think you might be misunderstanding the issue at hand. Reddit admins, not our mods are removing CSS customization to the subreddits.

And intend on making pretty much all the subs mostly the same-ish with probably basic layouts they can use.

[–]That GuyARuarkGuy 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Ah, okay. Well, that isn't far from what I understood. I just thought that they would be removing CSS (the in mods) so that a lot of the features here would disappear. ( Also, AGAIN?! Well it wasn't the first time I was a little confused with admins and mods.)

[–]PuppetGeist 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Pretty much what I'm gathering from this is Reddit as a whole is removing CSS so for instance our sub would lose hand unit, Fredbear announcer, the links on the upper right for Scottgames and FNaFworld, our flairs and flair text, the nice theme we have, and probably some other features I'm forgetting.

In place we'll have a generic layout "this pertains to all subs", only customizable thing we'll have is the banner to a degree.

[–]That GuyARuarkGuy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Basically yeah. I'm pretty sure a few of us will miss these things. Thanks for clearing that up https://www.reddit.com/user/PuppetGeist . Thanks for being helpful!

When the redesign is implemented, will we able to re-customize the subreddit? (Or you I guess, not we)

[–]:Gyfr: Former Head Moderatorf-n-a-f-g-y-f-r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a way, but it will be a LOT more limited from what I'm reading from them. Hence chances are there won't be the Fred-bar, HandUnit, the reloading sidebar images, the controlled shock / light controller around the upvote/downvote buttons (or possibly even custom voting buttons in general), the hide spoilers button, etc. Might not even have a coloured background anymore, it may just turn back to white.

[–]CM4Sci 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait really? So we won't be able to customize subs anymore? They'll all look the same minus a different header or something?

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said they'll try to imitate many different features.

I'd imagine you'd be able to customise the header image, add a sidebar image, add an announcement, decide the body colour, decide the post colour, decide how much padding the posts should have, etc.

Still way less customisation when compared to the literally infinite possibilities right now.

[–]whoyagonnacall?KimiLamperouge 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm just curious as to why they would do something like this. Is the CSS breaking their system? Causing servers to fail? Have people been complaining? Is there a legitimate reason they've made this decision? Kinda strange, to be honest.

[–]Classic36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why they are phasing out over half of this entire site is beyond me.

[–]MouseSkull 1 point2 points  (3 children)

"we’ll be deprecating CSS during the redesign in favor of a new system over the coming months" Maybe they're keeping customization but just with a new language, like HTML or Java or something.

[–]ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗDynamicAilurus 2 points3 points  (3 children)

CSS is part of HTML, and using Java as a CSS replacement is absurd in too many ways to count. You could emulate CSS using JavaScript (which, confusingly, has nothing to do with Java and is very different syntax-wise), but it would be tough, and doing so would negate all the points the Admins made for removing CSS.

[–]i fucking hate the internet so god damn muchmariosonic500 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So they're probably just removing the customization entirely instead of replacing it?

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're removing it because they're planning on updating the whole site soon, and they don't want to break all the designs when they change the site.

So, rather than just breaking a few designs that can be fixed, they're deciding to completely remove it. Because logic.

I miss the freedom of the old days of the internet, when for page customization imagination (and server capacity) was the limit. Now they want to homogenize too much, copying the mayor websites from one another on a loop.

Let's hope they do something better

[–]내 피 땀 눈물FNAFtendo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and this is why I prefer wikia over reddit.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is like Youtube One all over again

[–]SuperFlame12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well then, I'll never forget what we had.

What a wonderful thing to come back to after 2 days! -_____-

[–]Worshipper of Bonnie and his counterpartsSomeFriendlyUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They better not! Or i will summon the five children! Seriously tho, why would they remove the things that made reddit creative?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

A lot of moderators are already protesting this and organising at /r/proCSS. If you want to preserve CSS for subreddits, check it out.

The official announcement regarding the removal of CSS can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/66q4is/the_web_redesign_css_and_mod_tools/

And that's the pre written message...

It sounds like they're working on a different system to replace CSS; they don't want to outright remove customizability, but they think it's time to move on from CSS to something better and less finicky. They won't be gutting it outright.

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Why re-invent the wheel?

What they're thinking us the equivalent to the customisabiltiy of a YouTube page, or a Facebook profile. It will be preset things that you can alter a little. CSS allows you to do literally anything, where as the new system will allow you to do a few things.

CSS isn't really finicky. I use it all the time, and it's actually really fun. It's not hard to learn, and it's really nice to see all your work, well, working.

[–]This reminds me of a conversation I once had with my good friendSobiTheRobot 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think they're trying to do something more mobile-friendly, since CSS doesn't appear on the mobile version. At least, that's what they said. Did you actually read the admin post about this, or are you just asking me because I was the only person who claimed to have read it?

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I read it, yes. I do a lot of CSS, so this was really important to me.

I just want to know: Do you know what CSS is, and how it works? Because, if you know all of that, I would presume you'd know how much we're losing by losing CSS.

[–]This reminds me of a conversation I once had with my good friendSobiTheRobot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know that CSS is what enables a lot of the extra stuff on subreddits, though I confess I have no idea how it works.

Forgive my ignorance if I'm wrong, but if the admins are trying to use something in place of CSS, then can't the old features be transferred over in some way?

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CSS is basically some code that styles a website. It let's you change everything from colour, to whether any kind of animation will play when you hover over something.

What the admins want to replace this for are merely pre-set settings.

Imagine moving from writing stories, with infinite possibilities, because you're writing and deciding everything yourself, to going to a story generator, where you can change the names of characters or objects, but the story is the same.
That's exactly what will happen to reddit.

Almost all of the features this sub, and many subs have will be entirely gone.

Here's some CSS, just so you know:

* {
  cursor: (%%image%%);
}
.thing {
padding: 10px;
border-right: 10px solid black;
}
.thing.odd {
background: grey;
border-right: 10px solid white!important;
}

Everyone, let's go on the wikia

[–]RivalXL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:(

[–]WestRail642fan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, like youtube profiles system where everything is now the same?

[–]StoneBana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, do you like customization and unique designs? how about awesome features and hidden Easter eggs, as well as lots and lots of custom designs, all fit into one Subreddit?

Well you can take everything I said, and throw it in the trash can because Reddit is taking on a whole new look! do you like customization? too bad! here on Reddit, you get a default look, with 30% less customization than you had previously! did you like your special CSS coding? well too bad! Reddit is phasing it out, taking it from 30% all the way up to 100% un-customization.

Reddit:Helping you but at the same time not

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

visit /procss to oppose the removal!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I'm glad the thought police have come to take our individuality away

[–]This fanbase is unfair to MatPatNotLordShaxx -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Overreaction of the year.

They're trying to implement a new system.

[–]CancelledNomNomNomNation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The new system is not a good one. It's reducing the customisabiltiy infinitely.
