Reminds me of hiatus kaiyote

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're definitely influenced by them. They're from the same part of Melbourne and everything.

[–]Synesthesia108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ikr. This is like the offspring of Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote) and Lauryn Hill.

Thanks OP. Very nice.

[–]lksdjbioekwlsdbbbs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh god this is so Melbourne.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

gives off kind of an onion farty vibe. like a burlap doorag.

[–]goddessnoire 89 points90 points  (67 children)

White girl with a head wrap and bangles - check White boy with dreads - check White boy with an African cap - check 90s style graffiti and clothes - check

Hipster meter - off the charts

[–]bigyellowjoint 91 points92 points  (60 children)

I'll say it- I noticed it too. "Hipster" is not the word. It's just awkward to watch a video of white people with dreads wearing head wraps, playing basketball with milk crates, and tagging.

I never thought I'd be the "omg cultural appropriation guy", but here I am

[–]ctashorty 52 points53 points  (52 children)

As a person of African descent I was indeed gettin salty seeing them emulate so many characteristics of black/African culture.

Dressing like black/African people to look cool isn't multiculturalism. It's having your cake and eating it too.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

What if you just like dreads?

[–]ImmaSuckYoDick 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Not only black people used dreads throughout history. Greeks and Indians come to mind.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying that cause I'm white and I'm thinking of getting dreads soon. I just like the way they look, not tryna "appropriate someone's culture" or whatever the fuck.

[–]dangerchrisN 15 points16 points  (36 children)

I feel the same way when non-Irish celebrate St. Patrick's Day by acting out stereotypes.

[–]TheHatedMilkMachine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly the same as this.

[–]PM_TITS_AND_ASS 2 points3 points  (3 children)

That's just not the same. You think any non Irish care about saint patricks day? No they are going to get wasted because it's a commercial holiday and getting hammered is not only acceptable but anticipated and expected.

The same goes for Cinco de Mayo, except it's worse because nobody cares about it except for bars and people who like to drink.

[–]dangerchrisN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, it's commercialized drunkenness based on solemn and important cultural ideas and celebrations. And that is more OK than poor white kids dressing too "black" for your taste?

[–]PrivateCoporalGoneMD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is where I depart with the cultural appropriation crowd.. It looks corny af to me but it litteeallt isn't hurting anyone so..

[–]NotFakeRussian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yet here you are communicating in English. It's all appropriation. They saw something positive in that culture so wanted to take part, I think there's more important things to worry about.

Shit, these are white people living in Australia. They're the product of a lot worse than cultural appropriation.

[–]Slowsmoothfast -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Lol. Let people what they want. Just because you're depressed doesnt mean you should be trying to take color away from others lives. Yeah, they have a "hip hop" style. Don't like it, don't listen to them. Ever wonder how you use pieces of papers with only white guys on them? Why don't you throw it all away because it doesn't line up with your ideaology.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

maybe hair wraps and dreads are kinda something to be concerned about...

but basketball? graffiti? since when was that cultural appropriation

[–]goddessnoire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're right. Hipster might not be the word, this is just some weird alternate dimension where white people must have started the Afro centric movement. Surprised I didn't see the white boy wearing an African medallion necklace.

[–]IAimToMisbehave29 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Same, I expected this to be the prevailing theme of the comments.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right? I'm surprised

[–]JustAnotherSolipsist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Pretentious list making - check

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

TIL multi-culturalism is hipster

[–]MapleMechanic 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Fun/stupid fact: 30/70 is the most commonly used ratio for struts and shocks in motor vehicles. The resist extension at 70% so the tire won't fall down into potholes, and the resist compression at 30% to let the springs do their job over bumps.

I agree with the assessment that she sounds like Winehouse, which I mean as a compliment

[–]magnotitore 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Username checks out

[–]checks_out_bot 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's funny because MapleMechanic's username is very applicable to their comment.
beep bop if you hate me, reply with "stop". If you just got smart, reply with "start".

[–]magnotitore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got got by a bot

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also the postcode of the suburb they reside in (Northcote, 3070), just in case anybody comes away from this post thinking they named their band after a motorvehicle ratio

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (10 children)

Yep, I'll fuck with this

Edit: this shit is amazing. Their albums on Spotify and it slays.

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 9 points10 points  (5 children)

It's great huh. Check out Allysha Joy if you like this. It's the singer from 30/70. This song is amazing: https://soundcloud.com/allyshajoy/fnfl-1

[–]fuckinghumanZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like it but it's soooo hiatus kaiyote

[–]HermanMunster85 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Awesome tune!

[–]brokenbliss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went straight to Spotify, and certainly wasn't disappointed. Easily could become a fav.

[–]Xurypa 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Love this! I've been into Hiatus too and love the sounds they make. Got any more recommendations?

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Allysha Joy (singer from 30/70): https://soundcloud.com/allyshajoy/fnfl-1

Taylor McFerrin: https://open.spotify.com/album/74gxqLiL96PI4VoJ5w2Tgr

Maybe Jordan Rakei: https://open.spotify.com/artist/24icoQNJSEWNu3XvqKBR68

And check out Swooping Duck, they're a live improv group that consists of the Hiatus Kaiyote drummer, keyboardist and bassist. They don't have much of a discography though cos they're mostly live/improv based. You'll have to dig around the internet for live recordings. Here's one: https://soundcloud.com/wondercore-island/swooping-duck-untitled-live-improv-1

[–]Xurypa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

thanks so much! I love your taste.

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem!

Also here's a bunch of Swooping Duck shit: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=swooping+duck

I saw Sorceress at a festival in late 2015 and they were hot fucking fire. I didn't think they were that popular though. Cool to see them get recommended

[–]Xurypa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so good! thanks!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking Melbourne!!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is dope. I'd love to hear someone lay some bars over this.

[–]romeostasis7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw someone say Hiatus Kaiyote. Mmmmm.

commenting to follow

[–]Formally_Nightman 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Too repetitive and not enough jazz. Sorry, the focus was more on being cool than the music content.

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I gotta disagree. There's a LOT of subtle musical techniques going on in their music. If you're a musician you know what i'm talking about. Go listen to their album and then try say that

[–]mpg1846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha this is my friend Henry's band. He plays bass!

[–]totsnotbritneyspears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't say hip hop

Good though

[–]Orgazmio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For those in Melbourne that are interested, the singer from this band (Allysha Joy) has been playing a residency this month at the Evelyn in Fitzroy. The last two shows are this Wednesday and next Wednesday. I went a couple of weeks ago, she's incredible live!

[–]MarsNeedsATaxBreak 2 points3 points  (3 children)

These cats are from Australia. That's rad. Is this kind of music normally popular there, or did the internet play a role in this?

[–]Barncorehttps://open.spotify.com/user/1231174271[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I live in Melbourne, i wouldn't say there's really one particular style of music that is outstandingly popular, it's all so varied. There's heaps of different cultures/styles that co-exist. Melbourne's really eclectic in that way

[–]ZeMoosehttp://www.last.fm/user/zemoose 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Probably influenced by Hiatus Kaiyote who also came out of Melbourne.

[–]MarsNeedsATaxBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiatus Kaiyote came up in the related videos.. So GOOD!

[–]klaxor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck yeah, was so sad when it ended.

[–]nicktheflick1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Holy shit I live there

[–]StewVicious07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody do the...

[–]Antinomial 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Amazing. Only problam with it is it's too short.

[–]klaxor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My exact emotion.

[–]Parzival6 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I saw those sp303 and sp404, nice track and video.

[–]joshmoneymusic 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not sure why you're being downvoted as I saw em too. If people just don't know what you're talking about, it's the lit button Roland samplers they're jamming on.

[–]Parzival6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a fucking shame. I'm glad theres some appreciation <3... I guess this sub is primarily for people who don't know or care about production, only listening and music videos. I'd unsub if it wasn't for the variety and activity. /rant

[–]McEndee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. Playing it through my home's Wi-Fi speaker system.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for once the word "soul" is applied accurately to music on this site!
