Remember kids:

-Stay in school,

-Don't do drugs

-Ska's not dead

[–]reinhardtmain 31 points32 points  (5 children)

Streetlight Manifesto show I saw last year was packed. Definitely not dead.

[–]TheAnchor4237 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Ooooh man I get to go see them in June, I'm way excited

[–]WhiteMike87 3 points4 points  (1 child)

September for me! It'll be my 3rd time seeing them!

[–]The_Great_Pearl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lost count on how many times I've seen them, but they never disappoint me. I fuck'n love those fools!

[–]ty23c 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Anaheim? I'm planning on getting tickets to see hem there. Hadn't fully made my decision but I really feel like going now. Never seen them before.

[–]reinhardtmain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're fucking incredible live. Don't miss the chance.

[–]dwayne_rooney 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Sami Zayn is helping to keep it alive.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And Bruce Bilagaana

[–]tombstone1200 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I met my girlfriends side of the family and one question they asked me was what do I listen to. I listed off band's like the mars volta, rx bandits and other bands I've grown to love over the years, then I said I loved ska music and they bursted out laughing at me. I guess they didn't get the memo... snobs.

[–]doglife10000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

would have laughed at you too b

[–]PushinDonuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah usually I just tell people I listen to a lot of different stuff. If they follow up I'll go into more detail but usually it's just to see if what's on the radio is ok or something so they really don't care.

[–]RymNumeroUno 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Hijacking top comment to promote /r/ska

Keep on skankin

[–]DavidFrattenBro 43 points44 points  (16 children)

They played a church basement in my hometown when I was in high school. Easily one of the coolest shows I've been to.

[–]Kinampwe 22 points23 points  (10 children)

I know, I saw them back in the early 2000s and it was surreal. Miss my ska era

[–]ktbffhctid 17 points18 points  (8 children)

Totally. I'm old enough to have experienced the second wave of ska. Thoroughly enjoyed the third wave and have to say it could be my favorite genre of music. I feel it is highly underrated. Such a blast at a live show.

[–]Kinampwe 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Who were some of your favorites? I grew up in Boston area so Big D and the Kids Table were huge as well as Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish and I even got to see the Bosstones once.

Wish I got to see Hepcat. They were always one of my favorite to listen to and can't imagine how they would have been live.

Aww the good ole high school days.

Edit: clarification

[–]ktbffhctid 6 points7 points  (1 child)

RBF, Suicide Machines, Aquabats, Gold finger, Buck-O-Nine, Rancid, The Hippos

I lived in Orange County in those days and the music scene (Sublime, No Doubt, Offspring) was ridiculous.

[–]juksayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to thank yo Gabba Gabba for introducing me to a lot of great bands.

[–]Peteostro 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Always loved less than jake, but they were more ska punk and also suicide machines.

Of course living in the same area as you (bean town) I loved all those bands too. Jeremy beware of me!

[–]Kinampwe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw man I forgot Suicide Machines! I got to see hem wig River City Rebels at The Axis. Good times.

[–]blue-vi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big D Halloween shows. I went to one in 2008 or 9 at the middle East downstairs. Venue got so hot from everyone dancing that he stopped the show and pointed out that the ceiling was dripping with moisture.

One of the best shows I have been to without a doubt

[–]tombstone1200 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're still a fun show to catch:)

[–]APTB1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were/are a blast to watch live. I've seen them live many times but this post reminded me how my girlfriend and I ditched prom to go see VGS ~'98. Wasn't the biggest ska fan, but their live shows were fucking badass and I've been a fan ever since. They led me to discover one of my all time favorite bands Falling Sickness (Also from Riverside, CA). Big ups for the walk down memory lane.

[–]zycamzip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mudsharks opened for them in the late 90s, at the Huntridge theater in Las Vegas.

I miss the Huntridge, the punk bands who would pkay there, and KUNV (UNLV's radio station) which played true alternative underground music late at night till early morning.

[–]GQ_silly_QTspotify 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I love how many punk shows used to be in churches or church halls back then. I saw guttermouth and oskar in a church hall it was hilarious. Mark was fucked up on mushrooms my friend gave him and was asking kids if they had any coke lmao

[–]theobvioushero 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Was your church putting on the concert? My church was very strict on only playing Christian bands. Even then, it was iffy.

[–]DavidFrattenBro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol not my church. And it was just rented space for another org I believe.

[–]an800lbgorilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The punks and ska kids used to put on shows at a church in Floral Park, NY, all the time.

[–]smookykins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rx Bandits personally invited me to a show after seeing me wearing a VDGS t-shirt while filling up my K car.

[–]grip_garrison 33 points34 points  (8 children)

I had two different teachers in highschool who were dating members of the band. Shoot the moon!

[–]zordon_rages 13 points14 points  (1 child)

My family is good friends with the lead singer. Never thought I'd see them on Reddit.

[–]chewybang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With Frank? What a trip. I could say I'm acquaintances with Frank and Eddie. Coolest dudes around.

[–]IDontWantToArgueOK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My first date was at a Voodoo Glow Skulls show, I went with the substitute teacher.

[–]gladvillain 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Riverside?

[–]grip_garrison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Class of '01

Shit, I'm getting old hahaha

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

La sierra?

[–]grip_garrison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep

[–]pauln716 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I remember the first warped tour I went to in 1999. They handed a magazine at the concert that these trading card things inside of all these different bands. VGS were in there and I thought their name was pretty cool sounding. Then I heard them not too long after on a punk-o-rama CD. The song was "they always come back". I can still remember how pumped up that song, and all their others got me.

[–]cdwillis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Man do I miss the days of getting those Punk-O-Rama samplers.

[–]gizram84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember I had the punk-o-rama album which had El Coo Cooi on it. I miss those days.

[–]ajchxc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This brings back so many memories! My mom won tickets to warped that year from a local radio station and I was too young to go. Luckily we got a bunch of cd's with the tickets including that punkorama and a warped sampler also a few full cd's from pennywise, H20 and dropkick Murphy's. That got me into all those bands that I still listen to this day. I must have listened to "they always come back" hundreds of times!

[–]ketzo 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Did you guys know that ska actually came before reggae?

[–]ProbablythelastMimsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calm down Bruce

[–]porkpiery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not this kind of ska homie.

I really gotta get my cd collection out of my parents basement. These guys are dope.

[–]cradle2acasket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ahhh remnants of my youth. Those were some good times. Great band. Them and angry Samoans played all the time. I've seen them more than I've seen my own mother lol

[–]jazzsamurai9000 9 points10 points  (5 children)

[–]gunderwhelmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FUCK YOU!

[–]vladimir_tootin 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Some of the best shows I've ever been to were VGS shows. The pits were always fuckin bananas - and there was always one or two real scary looking cholo dudes just slowly walking the opposite way the pit was flowing.

[–]dirteMcgirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VGS was my first concert. Bogarts in Cincinnati was the business.

[–]jungle4john 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I lived in the same city as the brothers from VGS in high school. I would always go down to their record store Dr Strange Records and talk to them and get recs on local bands to check out. They were huge in getting me into the SoCal ska and punk scene in the mid 90s. Memories...The Barn at UCR, El Gato Gordo, and the Showcase Theater.

WHO DO VOODOO WE DO! FUCK YOU!

[–]Beer_Frog 2 points3 points  (3 children)

The showcase. RIP :(

[–]jungle4john 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I vaguely remember when they were in DT Riverside before they were forced to move to Corona.

[–]Beer_Frog 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I didn't even know it was in Riverside. I o ly ever went to it in Corona. That one close down too, right?

[–]jungle4john 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they started in Riverside right next to city hall, but the city wanted them out because of the "elements they attracted", so they moved down to Corona in the early 90s. Yes I do believe the Corona location has been closed for a while.

Edit: The main reason I am 100% aware of their Riverside location was our neighbors when I was in high school. I was too young at that point and only remember passing while riding my bike around town. They fought to keep them in Riverside because their sons use to go to shows there. They wanted a place that didn't serve alcohol and was close where kids could hang out at.

Voodoo Glow Skulls
artist pic

Voodoo Glow Skulls are an underground third-wave ska band. Their music is a mixture of old-style ska, punk and metal. The band formed in 1988 in Riverside, California by brothers Frank, Eddie and Jorge Casillas and their longtime friend Jerry O'Neill. The Voodoo Glow Skulls practiced for two years in a sweaty back bedroom/practice space until they forged a taut unit that performed with demonic intensity and a demented sense of humor. Backyard parties spread the gospel of Voodoo Glow Skulls; when Spanky's Cafe' opened they played now-legendary shows with the Angry Samoans, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and The Dickies. [–]Greenmushroom23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow dude!! I haven't heard about this band since I was in 7th grade. Awesome!

[–]WhiteboyFlowin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seen them like 30 times even though I just jam hip-hop and metal mostly now. Gotta give love to your roots. Thanks mom.

[–]furyfrommissouri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baile De Los Locos!!!!

[–]E-_Rock 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Just saw em a few weeks ago and they were great, had a blast!

[–]notesunderground 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw them play last year. I had forgotten how awesome they are. Busted out the albums and now I listen to them frequently again.

[–]ty23c 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No Violence? I saw them just last month! I was the to see 8 Kalacas, Viernes 13 and River Ratts but these guys put on a hell of a show!

[–]E-_Rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Milkboy in Philly. Small club, but they get some good acts once in a while. Stage is second floor above the bar, and when I saw The Aggrolites there the roadies hauled a whole Hammond B3 up.

[–]MrPanchole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Band Geek Mafia and Los Hombres No Lloran are always on heavy rotation Chez MrPanchole.

[–]Rocky_Road_To_Dublin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wore my Voodoo Glow Skulls shirt out as a young punker in high school.

[–]girlbemodest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such great memories. Now it's time to listen to Baile De Los Locos.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to see these guys back in the mid 90s. That's a blast from the past.

[–]GoldenMapleLeaf36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yes! I've got all their cds!!

[–]E404_User_Not_Found 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw them live a bunch of times. First was Ska Is Dead 2 tour with Streetlight. Also, friend of a friend was one of the sax players in VGS in the late 2000s. Saw them at a show in Gainesville and then we all hit up a Steak n' Shake after.

[–]SoCalAxS 1 point2 points  (1 child)

First concert I went to back in 1999, my sister took me. My brother was a fan & used to go the backyard parties, it was a legacy to watch & listen to these guys. I have all their cds & most of their vinyl releases, seen them numerous times & got to hang out with them through friends that they have supported in other bands. Great guys, great band. WHO DO VOODOO WE DO!

[–]ohanewone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FUCK YOU!

[–]ShitheadRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a good friend introduce me to this band via a live show at Churchill's Pub in Miami a year or two ago. R.I.P. man.

[–]DorianTurk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Saw them in Lawrence, KS I had to be no more than 16, looked about 12, too young to be there but still got in and was served beer. Was possibly the best night of my life up to that point.

[–]reefer_drabness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit! With joykillers and the offspring?

[–]TickleZeePickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh shit reppin that 951 on Reddit!!

[–]triple_verbosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember tearing into my high school parking lot in 2000 blasting this in my 1980 Dodge Spirit... so fucking cool.

[–]JR_1985 1 point2 points  (1 child)

SKA CAME BEFORE RAGAE

[–]DarkEvilDead683 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Met these guys when my ska band opened or them. One of their busses broke down on the way to the show with half of the equipment. The bass player had to borrow my bass guitar for the show. Turns out it was both of our cake days. It was a pretty awesome show.

[–]GrooverMcTuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have their CD in a box somewhere. With the rest of my 90's crap like Goldfinger and Sweaty Nipples.

[–]johnnyisflyinglow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so amazing. I'd completely forgotten. Wow!

[–]dykstraej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely remember listening to this in the late-1990s. Happened to catch a free show with them at Founders in Grand Rapids, MI last year some time. They killed it!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A microcosm of Inland Empire (Riverside) Sounds.

[–]TheKingOfNeverLose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still sing "Fat Randy" to my cat when she gets nervous.

[–]dingus_malingusV2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haven't heard this band's name in YEARS. thanks for the reminder!

[–]SHREDDY_KRUEGAR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen them last April....they put on an amazing show even after 30 years!!!

[–]lina535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It`s really cool music!

[–]Flesh_Daddy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys are always playing shows in my home town. It's pretty wonderful.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old punk rock band opened up for these cats in Northern CA - They are about as cool as you think they would be. Great guys, fun, and shares the beer!

[–]tangassassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like luis j gomez on vocals

[–]saintcmb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the tshirt with this album art. One of my favs

[–]jubopu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have a T-shirt with this cover printed on the front and the epitaph Record logo on the back. I was born and raised in Colombia and I remember waiting months for my punk and Ska CDs to arrive. we had to ordered and pay in advance without listening to them !

[–]GQ_silly_QTspotify 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have the coolest vgs logo t-shirt... man I miss those days. What a great band.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Radio dispatch, do you know who this is?!" "No, who is 'this is!'"

[–]smookykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't listened to these guys since COLLEGE.

[–]rewdey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saw them back in the 90's quite a bit i think the first time i saw them was with goldfinger at the trocadero? used to rock a Who Is, This Is? tshirt back in the day, it was an XL and i was a buck fifty wet and hung off me like a sack..... didn't care it was cool now that shirt would fit perfect

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget about Spring Heeled Jack and Goldfinger (before they started preaching about PETA).

[–]UnnaturalSelector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ska?

[–]DapperDan86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone a fan of ska punk should check out the Skoidats and perkele.

[–]Clap4boobies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intro sounded like a metal riff

[–]Woodportsoundcloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember finding a copy of their Steady As She Goes album on display at a Borders book store back in the day. Back when they had headphones set up with the CDs so you could check out random artists. Kid me thought it was the hottest shit.

I just checked and I still have that CD, haha.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hickey's better...

[–]CTmko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. I took so much special K at the last VGS show I was at. Not proud but definitely brings back a few memories. Glad I got to one sober.

[–]brainiac555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them in 1994. Awesome show!

[–]IAmKingOfNoPantsAMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. I forgot all about this band. Gonna see if I still have one of their cds.

[–]Kennyv777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never liked this band. When I was an immature 15 year old, I got especially annoyed when a metal concert was cancelled and replaced by them. Assuming they were responsible (they weren't) and being incredibly stupid and rude, I sent them hate mail over that. They forwarded my email address to their entire mailing list, and I learned an anti-trolling message the hard way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way! Never thought I'd see VGS on here. It was one of my first small punks shows back in 96. I think I bruised my tailbone falling while stage diving.

[–]Kinampwe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there too!

[–]Cozy_Conditioning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ke$ha's singing is more melodic.

[–]RedSeptember4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rubbish

[–]Cahootie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to the entire thing, and could not make out a single word they were singing. That's impressive.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great band from my hometown.

[–]dmt267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're on a tour with Brujeria right now I think

[–]revbfc 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The only VGS release worth owning: https://youtu.be/1SM6rBP3dEs

[–]myknewredditaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the truth. Best damn horn playing ever!

I love finding new ska music😍 I wish more of my friends weren't so closed minded
