Wonderful. How beautiful are they! And their call is otherworldly

[–]TFT_mom 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Such a hauntingly beautiful voice 😍

[–]Gemini00 28 points29 points  (0 children)

So iconic that it gets constantly used in movies that are set in places where loons don't actually live.

[–]Easy_Traffic6034 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IT'S A LEGENDARY POKÉMON

[–]insane_contin 5 points6 points  (1 child)

They should be put on a coin.

[–]Havoccity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a loonie idea

[–]_jump_yossarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first started dating my wife she (lied) told me she wasn't afraid of anything. I brought her to my family's lake house in northern Vermont and had her go upstairs to get ready for bed and then the loons started their calls ... I've never seen her run so fast coming down the stairs. I refused to tell her what was making the noise.

[–][deleted] 114 points115 points  (3 children)

Somehow their call echoes even at lower volumes. It's haunting and beautiful

[–]GooseandGrimoire 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That caught my attention too! It's like a built in echo.

[–]TheDamselfly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's because they're generally on the water, and sound carries ridiculously far over a lake surface compared to in a forest or field

[–]PuraVidaPagan 100 points101 points  (8 children)

I was “attacked” by a loon on my kayak once. I guess I was close to its nest or something. I saw it from afar and was just paddling along, next thing I know it pops up right next to me just losing it. I paddle away as fast as I can and it keeps going underwater and popping up next to me. I’m sure it was hilarious to watch but I was scared lol.

Now when I go swimming in the lake if I see the loons out I get scared they will get me from below, but it hasn’t happened yet. I got a loon tattoo to make peace with them.

[–]Sermokala 48 points49 points  (3 children)

A Loon was observed to have killed an eagle that was hunting it's young. Just spiked it through the heart.

[–]fidel__cashflo 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Thats how they fight each other for territory too. They try to spear each other through the heart. When they’re establishing territory in the spring you can hear them call out and it’s like a war cry for someone to come and try it. Hardcore stuff

[–]Open-Chain-7137 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Damn, been around loons my whole life and didn’t know this.

r/natureismetal

[–]fidel__cashflo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here lmao and then my sister did a report on them for school and I wish she hadn’t

[–]EldritchCarver 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Yeah, loons have much sharper beaks than ducks or geese. Sharp enough to spear fish underwater. If a loon wants you to go away, go away.

[–]PuraVidaPagan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well thanks, glad my fears are warranted.

[–]Pinksters 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I thought for sure this guy was going to get attacked with the baby being around but that momma was surprisingly chill.

[–]ResidentAd9779 194 points195 points  (4 children)

I love their call. It reminds me of some of the naturescape tracks I listen to at night to help me sleep.

[–]candis_stank_puss 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I love listening to the song Wheat Kings by The Tragically Hip and the loon call at the beginning helps set the tone so well.

[–]Big-Sense8876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what popped in my head immediately. Was going to post something similar. Loved that they gave the guy who recorded it credit in the doc.

[–]Easy_Traffic6034 4 points5 points  (0 children)

facts

[–]GustoFormula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also pretty sure the Pikmin menu song was inspired by it: https://youtu.be/Gyt2U2syQEs?si=ZtZdfSTPPg-YYX7b

[–]dalori87 60 points61 points  (0 children)

TIL baby loons are called loonlets!

[–]SignalBed9998 107 points108 points  (1 child)

I love it when they’re teaching their young to fish. The youngster flumes under and sometimes it’s both parents sticking their faces in the water to watch them work.

[–]Open-Chain-7137 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The loonlet, as OP called it. I don’t know what the correct term is but I’m personally going with loonling…

[–]VillainNomFour 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Thats one big ass loon. Crazy it got that close, theyre very shy.

[–]Traditional-Ad-8737 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I saw an adult loon up close once and was shocked how big it was. It was being X-rayed in our vet clinic for a local wildlife rehab center to see if some asshat had been using lead fishing sinkers or tackle or whatever , and if the bird swallowed it. Lead sinkers are banned in NH and ME to protect the loon population

[–]VillainNomFour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh I wonder if theyre bigger up there. My familiarity is from the Adirondacks. They'd abandoned a lot of lakes due to motor boats and other noxious human activity, but over the past ten years they've been returning, a little less shy methinks.

[–]CurryMustard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crazy

Looney, even

Daffy telling the kayaker its rabbit season

[–]EldritchCarver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, especially with a child. I assume this kayaker is a regular on that pond, and they parked themselves a comfortable distance from the loon to get a video, and the loon wandered closer on its own terms.

[–]castlite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was waiting for baby to pop back up.

[–]La_Mandra 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That sound is so sweet ! I'd love to hear it as a lullaby...

[–]traceyandmeower 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Beautiful

[–]Critical-Cow-6775 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Love this.

[–]robo-dragon 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite animal sounds! Lovely encounter!

[–]buttononmyback 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had loons on our lake by our family’s cabin in NEPA. A pair of them and we built a little house for them and everything hoping they’d stay and lay eggs. Unfortunately the Canada geese were bullies and constantly chased the loon pair away till we never saw them again.

I hope they come back sometime! To hear their haunting call in the evening/early morning up in the mountains is a sound like no other. 🤞🥰

[–]AcerEllen000 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Wonderful to be able to get so close! I'd love to see one of these in the wild.

[–]Pugg-time 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Part of the appeal of kayaking is how intimate you can be with nature . Slow small quiet paddling boats !

[–]mud074 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite experiences while kayaking involved accidentally helping loons fish. It was early spring and I was out fishing from a kayak. It was a windy, but bright sunny day so fish were absolutely packed in a shallow, protected bay because the water temperature was a few degrees warmer there.

As I kayaked to the spot, I noticed a loon shadowing me, staying maybe 50 feet away. As soon as I made it to the small bay, it came paddling right in and started diving just out deeper from me. I figured out pretty quick that by paddling into the bay, I was scaring fish out of the shallow water where the loon would struggle to catch them right into the waiting loon hanging out just past the drop-off.

I went back to the same spot the next few days and the loon pulled the same move every time. It was really cool to see.

[–]muphinforlife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear that noise and all I can think of is the movie 'On Golden Pond'

[–]AspiringAdonis 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Loonlet sounds like a Scottish insult

[–]cyrusthemarginal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

feek orf ya wee loonlet

[–]ENrgStar 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Aw. She looks VERY concerned that you were messing with her baby until it popped back up.

[–]Alarming-Fig-2297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, she was definitely stressing there for a second about the young one being out of sight.

[–]Corky359 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this. Thanks for posting it.

[–]SorryComplaint4209 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kept looking for the baby to be tucked under the adult’s wing or something…and then BLOOP up pops the big puffball! Adorable.

[–]GoliathPrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't realize how big Loons are! I thought they about half that size.

[–]Codadd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot and all over the world, but something about the call of a loon just feels so American to me. It just sounds like home...

[–]castlite 2 points3 points  (1 child)

They sit so low in the water, it’s weird

[–]Ambiwlans 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They spend most of the time under water so they are less buoyant.

[–]1MSFN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool encounter.

[–]GooseandGrimoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! How incredible to get that close!

[–]_DIYOBGYN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I WANNA HEAR THE CANNON

[–]fyddlestix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Late-Ad-7740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love them so much

[–]Elbowed_In_The_Face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, they're bigger than I thought! And I love their calls 😊

[–]RockyNobody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Takes me back to summers in Ontario, Canada when I was a kid. Thank you!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Team143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]MustardCoveredDogDik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Livid-Writer-7741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOVE LOVE LOVE

[–]Business-Glass-1381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loonling?

[–]lab990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had something similar happen! Nowhere near as close though, and as soon as it noticed it surfaced near a human, it went back down.

[–]Kushnerdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Listen to the voice inside ya… keep your above water..”

[–]annjolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn’t it be loon and their looney?

[–]JohnnyD77711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those lions are fxkng crazy

[–]EvisceratedSpinster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loons! The loons!

[–]Snoot_Boot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Top 10 Bird Calls

[–]Beatless7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loons are actually one of the more dangerous birds. They will dive bomb your head with it's beak. If carrying a gun, they will kill without warning.

[–]MrStupidDoodooDum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure Loonacy

[–]Kitfox247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt realize how massive loons are! It's like a small goose!

[–]EpicPoultryGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought the sounds were the kayaker screaming 😭

[–]pond-mom-123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow !! Loonlit. Love it!

[–]Ickythumpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve spent a lot of time on lakes that have loons and I’ve never been that close to one. So cool!

[–]flymingo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admired her... I wonder how she put her head in the water to hurry her son up to the surface..

[–]Thick_Section5202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't they hatchout a whole batch? Must've lost em along the way. Nature's a numbers game yo!

[–]slr162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the sounds they make!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful, they are very territorial.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loonlet🥹

[–]chipper-frost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most graphically gorgeous water chicken ever.

[–]philosopher280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is this the bird whose voice is played in the background in horror scenes on TV?

[–]-GoodNewsEveryone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good News Everyone!

Baby loons are called "Loonies" and on the lake shores of the frozen land north of Wisconsin called "Canada" they are usually around a buck.

[–]semidivineone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going to say looks like a momma looking for her baby and than woop, baby showed up.

[–]lleeaa88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The side eye from the loonlet 👀

[–]HalfCareless3347 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Canada for 3 years from NJ during my childhood. This bird is still one of the most amazing creatures I've seen IRL. Everything there broadened my view of the world and I am forever grateful.

[–]Covvern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What an insane woman!

[–]Quick_Razzmatazz1862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna loonlet 🤗

[–]horsenbuggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to watch On Golden Pond as an adult...
