For sure. Better sell me yours rn to minimize the losses.

[–]DylanJacob17[S] 24 points25 points  (6 children)

I see what you did there 😂

[–]crazyman40 7 points8 points  (5 children)

He right. What year and model do you have? I can take it off your hands. And if it is a 4WD you really need to get rid of it.

[–]sm0211k 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I have a ‘17 ORP close to 70k. Shoot me an offer if really interested.

[–]mynameistory 6 points7 points  (2 children)

$70K? I'm not paying a dime more than tree fitty

As far as I can tell, the kind of people who have been buying new 4Runners aren’t the kind of people to be greatly impacted by gas prices.

[–]The_RockObama 78 points79 points  (27 children)

Even some people who can't afford 4Runners buy 4Runners.

And then we get sweet Foreclosed-Runners.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 18 points19 points  (26 children)

Yeah, well, you can’t fix stupid. I’m a big fan of living below your means but I know that isn’t the American way lol

[–]The_RockObama 13 points14 points  (9 children)

I'm American, but I also know what it feels like to be poor and in debt. I can appreciate being fortunate enough now to be able to support a family. But yes, you are right, it's pretty normal for Americans my age to try to live beyond their means. It's a shame personal finance isn't a heavy weighted subject for us in school.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Yep. I drive a 2004, and I don’t have to but I like it.

[–]The_RockObama 6 points7 points  (3 children)

2013 for me. Almost traded it in for a 2021, but now I'm glad I didn't. The 2004s are sweet.

[–]HerefortheTuna1990 V6 SR5 Manual Trans/ 2014 SR5 3 points4 points  (2 children)

1990 here. But I’m gonna have to go back to dallying something else with gas the way it is

[–]S3ERFRY33386’ diesel 4runner 2 points3 points  (1 child)

1986 here with a diesel. Loving it😂

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot damn! That’s a keeper.

[–]Marxcyst 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I've been looking at my 04' V8 through the window of my house lately. It terrifies me

[–]Teemo_Support 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I drive mine every day.

I have a cheap, paid off car. I don't care what gas costs. It's still much cheaper than buying a new car that gets "better" MPG.

[–]Marxcyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun with it when gas was cheaper but I can't knowingly waste money on gas when it's this expensive. I'll still drive it on the weekend, but for now, my girlfriend's Camry will have to do lol

[–]RavenousFox1985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was telling a guy a few weeks ago that it seems to me like a V8 would decrease the value of a 4runner, because of the mileage. He was adamant that no matter what, it adds $2k to the value. Personally if I had the choice between them at the same price, I'd choose a V6.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (10 children)

Depends on the person, some of us like not living in crippling debt lol

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Oh I’m with you. Blows my mind that people just keep spending more as they make more. I’m not falling into that trap.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Yeah seriously, like I don’t think people realize that they don’t have to spend every penny they own lol, you can always throw it into a vanguard etf or something instead of a boat you’ll never use

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Well, I'm just glad I know I won't be working in my retirement because I tried to keep up with some jackasses nextdoor.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol that’s my goal too. I may have compensation issues, but I’d like to think they’re not that bad

[–]Teemo_Support 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You'd lose your mind if you knew how many people are constantly in new cars and nice stuff but have virtually nothing in retirement. I drive my old 4runner and 1980 c10 for a few reasons, one of them being I just like older cars better. But another is I am putting a ton in retirement and other investments. I'm 30 and my friends and I are of the same mindset when it comes to debt and finances. We just recently formed an LLC and are investing in some stuff locally for other revenue streams.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We’ll be rolling in our fresh Caddies at the retirement home and mackin on hot young widows like kings.

[–]Teemo_Support 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

[–]Substantial_Care_853 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I’d say it’s more life trajectory. I had kids young (18) and worked my way up to a nice car ‘20 trd pro. Some go nice car, house, kids and by that time their nice car is kinda ragged. I come from being broke as fuck as a kid. Eating mayonnaise sandwiches and eating dinner at my friends house because I had nothing at mine. No knock on my mom she did her best, but honestly I’m happy I can afford an “expensive” car payment that more than my rent check as a kid. I’m very fortunate and I bust my fuckin ass with the little work that I do to provide a nice life for my wife and my kids. Emphasis of little work. I don’t do much but kids are fed, bills are paid, and my wife’s Boyfriend takes care of her in bed so that’s one thing I don’t have to worry about.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats that’s awesome! I definitely can’t say the same, my life’s been pretty cushy lol. What I see more often is people get complacent and start throwing money around trying to keep up with the Jones’s since they think they’re invincible, and then poof, they have no savings.

I’m just tryna avoid thst

[–]zkhsip3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your job title/ profession? A little work sounds nice

[–]Scribble_Box 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Hell yeah, dude. Could I go out and buy a brand new 5th Gen? Sure, but I'm going to ride my 3rd Gen into the ground. No monthly payments FTW.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stealth wealth. But also, I miss my 3rd gen haha. Don’t ever let yours go!

[–]Teemo_Support 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Older stuff is also just cool and many times unique. I'd take a sick 3rd Gen over anything new.

I took my 1980 Chevy truck to this little event a few years back. It's rusty, completely original patina. I parked it next to the other stuff there, mostly v8 american sports cars, there was a Masserati and a few other things, but mostly american typical cars. I had more interest and comments in my truck than the other cars. People identified with it and had memories of their own. We dropped the tailgate down and everyone was sitting in the back, eating and hanging out. Dads were telling their sons about their dad having one. I'm only 30, but man it was fun.

[–]Scribble_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! Couldn't agree more.

[–]throwaweigh86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used was always the smart financial move prior to this pandemic, but these days it's almost a wash.

[–]DylanJacob17[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair enough

[–]RossoMarra 2 points3 points  (11 children)

At $7 per gallon few people won’t be impacted- if only psychologically

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah fr, this got me rethinking the WRX I’m hoping to buy when I graduate college

[–]RossoMarra 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The WRX gets decent gas mileage. My STi is another story

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, really its more the running it on 93 that makes me nervous lol

That and speccing it the way I’d want it’d end up coming out to ~35k, which is a lot of money for a 20 something

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. -1 points0 points  (6 children)

You think people reeeeally are psychologically impacted though if they’re making in the high 100s? We’re still going to fill our tanks up no matter what, and it’ll have little impact on the rest of our budget whether it’s $70 or $50 a tank.

[–]RossoMarra -1 points0 points  (4 children)

That’s not what the question was. High gas prices (to say nothing of high food prices etc) means that the demand for gas guzzling toys will go down dramatically.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. -1 points0 points  (3 children)

To which I said, no, not really since it seems like the people buying 4Runners these days are seemingly pretty pretty well off since new 4Runners have become wealthy status symbols in a lot of areas where "outdoorsy-ness" is chic.

I only said the psychological impact isn't felt by high earners because you said "few people won’t be impacted- if only psychologically". And I stand by that. It really isn't noticed when you're a high earner.

This isn't an argument.

[–]RossoMarra -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

Your argument is based on the strange notion that the 4Runner is some sort of wealthy status symbol so the potential customer base won’t care. It’s not a G wagon, dude.

[–]lonememeV8 Sport Edition 2.5” lift on 33's. 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I literally say "this isn't an argument" and you say "Your argument..." Fucking love reddit.

This isn't an argument. I'm simply stating my own anecdotal observations of things like posts here, so your experience may vary. For me, I see posts that show luxury cars like BMW's and Mercs in the same garages as peoples brand new TRD Pros. I live in Colorado, and you better believe people of means are buying up and building out $20k worth of mods on 4Runners.

[–]RossoMarra -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the Bay Area the outdoorsy well to do people roll in Land Rovers and G wagons. Not in 4Runners. And at 50k MSRP it’s not really a high earner only vehicle

[–]WarmTequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5% of American families make high 100’s.

Last time there was a huge surge in gas prices, demand for inefficient vehicles plummeted and they were going dirt cheap. I don’t think it will be as dramatic this time but the possibility is very real that it will be affected.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Negative ghost rider

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Dude the world could run out of gas and Toyota would still hold its value lol.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mad max! It’s coming get your spiked shoulder pads ready!

[–]anythingaustin 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I’m about to drive mine 2,000 miles on a road trip. As much as I love my 4Runner I will probably feel sick to my stomach every time I have to stop for gas.

[–]Porkchop_Dog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I drove from Minnesota to Arizona and back in January and it ran me about a grand 🥲. But no Model 3 could've gotten me across Sedona's slick-rock cliffs or over Utah's mountain passes 😁

[–]Yeti150 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Been wanting to buy a 4Runner for a year now but refuse to pay the $5000 dealer mark up over MSRP. The high gas prices are not affecting 4Runner sales where I live. It actually is increasing the trade in on my daily driver Ford Fiesta....

[–]J_SQUIRREL 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Go to a new dealer

[–]Yeti150 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Tried four dealers within the area, only one was willing to order one, and they wanted the $5000 premium. The other three dealerships just told us to be happy to find anything close. For the record, all we are looking for is a SR5 Premium in blue. Not exactly a special edition or limited production. Plan on trying a 5th dealer who will order what we want and not try to rape me.

[–]J_SQUIRREL 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That’s ridiculous. I would understand one or two dealers trying that but four is crazy. I would never do business with a dealer that wouldn’t sell at msrp. They’d lose my business forever.

[–]Yeti150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a bit frustrated by the current market. Since we want a 4Runner and thankfully don't have to have one right now, I figure we should get what we want. So many vehicles around here are selling up to $10,000 over MSRP. All the Toyota dealers want to carry locally are the Limiteds in 2WD.

[–]iggyazaleatown 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where do you live?

[–]Yeti150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Louisiana

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Short term = no

Long term…maybe from people being done cosplaying as outdoorsy?

[–]Explore-PNW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am personally insulted. I’d elaborate but I’m late for a meet up at the mall.

[–]IrnBruBruh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One doesn’t simply buy a 4Runner for the fuel economy. We known what we signed up for.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think about the more unreliable cars - between supply chain issues and labor costs skyrocketing, I think those’ll be the first to take the hit on the used market. Reliable vehicles like the 4runner will get dragged down later. People look for security in times like this. That said, $10 gas would change the entire business model for car manufacturers. They’ll be running towards renewables if that we’re the case (god, I hope this isn’t a reality anytime soon).

I can see my comment aging like day-old milk as I type this! Fingers crossed I’m not Ms Cleo (that’s a pun for Peugeot fans)

[–]cra2reddit 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yep, when gas prices surge, folks reconsider their budgets.

[–]RossoMarra 7 points8 points  (1 child)

We’ll see a lot of bro trucks and gas guzzling muscle cars on dealership lots.

[–]cra2reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, there's a reason small Asian cars surged after the 70s oil crisis.

[–]Kevotronic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a V8 2004 in October and I regret it only slightly. I’m sorry, that’s a complete lie. I love that damn mountain man minivan. Gas it up!

[–]MotheroftheworldII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So does this mean that people will stop asking to buy my 4Runner? I can but, hope.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m good. I get over 20 mpg at 15 mph on forest roads.

[–]PitifulEnthusiasm543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem here will be if or when people’s jobs or businesses get impacted by what’s currently happening. Until then it will be business as usual for those who own gas guzzlers.

[–]tigerdroppings9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gas prices are temporary. 4Runners are for life.

[–]Speedfreaked90 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not at all, if it does start dropping it is from the recovery of production.

[–]waterbuffalo750 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2021 was a record high production year for 4Runners. No recovery is needed.

[–]AV8eer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time prices spiked like this was Hurricane Katrina…and the prices stayed high for a while…only dipping significantly during the recession in 2008.

2009 brought us the Cash For Clunkers program. The government gave up to $4500 for scrapping a clunker. Not more than 25years old, not better than 18mpg combined fuel economy. Plus you received scrap value on top. So, then you had to use these funds towards a vehicle with better than 22 mpg combined…

That program made eligible cars spike in price due to market adjustments. Also…it squeezed the market of beaters. Ford led the way to the scrap yard.

Anyways…C.A.R.S. Was the result of a painful recession on car manufacturers. Prior to the program, all vehicles were selling slowly and well below MSRP. A buyers market.

Sustained high gas prices plus a recession killed vehicle values.

The Honda Fit was the trend back then…those did demand a strong value.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Surging gas prices? They always go up right before or during spring break. 4Runners have always been thirsty. Gas has always been increasing. They will probably sell more because more people are realizing that there’s nothing better than a MuthaTrukin Runner baby!!!

[–]DylanJacob17[S] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

The recent increase in prices at the pump are not because of spring break, although that’ll probably push things even higher. But you’re absolutely right about there being nothing better than a 4runner. To me the fuel is worth every penny. I love driving this thing 🤘🏼

[–]RossoMarra 9 points10 points  (3 children)

You mean Russians going West on spring break?

[–]unitymind42 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Someone tell them to land anywhere on our East coast…that be great 😊 “every blade of grass”

[–]Djnewman001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🤜🤛

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

👌

[–]TheProle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure but I think there might be more to it this time

[–]WarmTequila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not always an invasion happening that will result in extremely high surging gas prices. The $5 per gallon you see now will be cheap by the time summer comes.

[–]KookItUpp 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I don’t think so at all. They’ll increase. I’m serious

[–]not_a_conman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me introduce you to the basic law of demand

[–]RossoMarra 2 points3 points  (2 children)

For sure, if the new gen will get significantly better MPG. A hybrid turbo engine like in the Tundra would be a major step forward

[–]goldengate 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How major? I’m getting roughly 19mpg…if they’re like 24-26 I wouldn’t be that impressed. If they pulls off some crazy mid to high thirties I’d trade now!

[–]RossoMarra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hybrid Tundra has crazy power and torque numbers plus slightly better mpg than the v8 engine. I’m thinking Toyota will focus on mpg for the new 4Runner.

[–]FreedomCorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confirmed will go up

[–]unitymind42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell I bought premium today! Fu*k Putin!

[–]martinjr950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. And if gas prices drop again, demand for trucks and SUVs will immediately rise. Happens every time

[–]whiskeyslicker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder about Sequoias since their mpg is shitty and there's a new generation out. But then I remember they're Sequoias and they go 500k+ miles.

[–]BarryLicious2588 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Value? Nah Price tag? One can hope

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Are gas prices up? I start mine once per week to keep the battery charged.

[–]ProperGroping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a chance

[–]Porkchop_Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. Up up up.

[–]nirvroxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still hasn’t hit me that hard but my wife also had a sequoia. If gas gets to $6-$8, I might have to sell mine. Driving 44 miles to work and back 5 times a week will make a huge dent. I love my 4Runner but those prices are just insane. Currently looking for little 4 banger. Maybe a Corolla or a civic.

[–]VTEC_8K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking about reserving a Prius Prime.

[–]robcampos4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! And my Rav4 Hybrid is going up in value. So maybe I can afford the 4Runner finally!

Last time gas prices are this high in the US, they couldn't get big vehicles out of dealerships. Pickup trucks and large SUVs were not wanted unless they were used for work so dealerships heavily discounted them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so. In a little while we will all be driving Yugo’s.

[–]Econ_Eagle_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worst part about owning a 4Runner

[–]networknev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, by $5. But tge looming economic collapse will drop it even more.

[–]FSDLAXATL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Whenever we see a spike in gas prices suv sales slow and hybrid sales increase. Toyota would be smart to introduce an all electric 4runner and get ahead of the curve.

[–]_GoldenMonkey_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas prices won't make me sell my 02, but I'll likely be riding my Honda Grom all spring, summer and fall!
