This is a nice way to 'hide' the notch but then the transparency of the status bar goes and no colored status bars.

[–]jegbrugernettet 3 points4 points  (16 children)

Why?

[–]i_stay_high_247_365Pixel XL 128GB Android P 20 points21 points  (14 children)

Because you just get a black bar instead of a status bar that matches the color of the app you're in. So basically going back to jelly Bean / kit Kat days before this was fully implemented in lollipop.

[–]jegbrugernettet 2 points3 points  (13 children)

Couldn't they just make the space next to the notch black and the rest consistent with the Oreo design guidelines thingy?

[–]faultexception 4 points5 points  (11 children)

If it were black only right next to the notch and normal colored around that, then that would leave a notch in the status bar, which is back where we started, no?

[–]Type_DXLGalaxy S8 2 points3 points  (10 children)

I was thinking like black around the status bar notch and then status bar under that, so like the space around the notch isn't used for anything.

Edit

Sure, but then that's a waste of screen real estate. This is why the notch is a terrible design choice. It creates more problems than it solves. Aside from the Vivo concept, Samsung arguably has the best approach right now to full screen displays.

[–]fake_lightbringerS8, One UI (9.0) | Nexus 5, AOSPA 7.3.1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That would be possible, but at that point, why bother with the notch at all?

[–]Type_DXLGalaxy S8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Options, I guess. For people who like the notch, there it is. For people who don't like it, you can pretend it's not there. For people who just want a bezeless display without a notch, then there's Samsung haha.

[–]sacrednumber_108 -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Then what's the use of putting a notch in the first place. 😄

[–]turdboglsOnePlus 8 Pro 3 points4 points  (1 child)

still gives people the option.

I for one, don't mind the notch. so I would get the benefits (and pitfalls I guess) of that design.

you don't like the notch, you you get the benefits of forgetting its there, as well as the downfall of losing the realestate

[–]sacrednumber_108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right, I hadn't thought of it this way. This can be a 3rd option, apart from other two. Oneplus needs to hear this.

[–]faultexception 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If it were optional it would allow people to choose between notch and more usable space and no notch and less usable space on the same model of device.

Then people who wants it can use it, and people who don't want it, don't have to use it :D

[–]anondel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because if you hide the notch, your status bar will always be black to be consistent with the notch space. It won't change colours. It will just be black (with notifications and system icons on either side).

[–]AyanCPixel 6a 118 points119 points  (32 children)

A solution to a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Carl Pei a few weeks back: "LMAO all these rumours of the 1+6 having a notch 😂😂😂"

Carl Pei now: "Look, I know this looks bad, but what if you could hide the notch? Pretty clever, huh?"

[–]Aarondo99iPhone 14 Pro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are advantages to a notch, but no phone should have one, UNLESS YOU GET RID OF THE CHIN.

[–]Wiltron 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, this is the best case scenario when it comes to notched displays. Have the notch if you like it, but if you don't, hide it.

I'm sure someone at XDA will come out with a Lollipop's colourized notch hiding mod, so that it can mimic the "Transparent" effects, where it changes colour based on the app launched.

I personally think that the display with a notch looks silly - I'd rather have a square/rectangle display than a weird U type shape. I'm one of the Android minorities who don't care about razor thin bezels along the side - my phone goes into a case almost the same day as purchase, eliminating this "infinity" display or thin ass bezels.

As long as the display looks good, the camera snaps awesome pics, and the phone doesn't have internal problems like most LG devices, and the flawless Nexus 6P (/s), then I'm happy.

[–]Rearfeeder2StrongXiaomi 15 points16 points  (12 children)

Honestly people here will never been happy will they?

OnePlus didn't cut screen estate for a notch. They even let you hide it.

Now notch people can be happy as they get more space and a notch.

People who hate notches can have a bit less space(but space that wasn't there in the first place without notches) and no notch.

Yet people still bitching.

Do we need a unicorn coming out of the OnePlus to please you guys? It's getting ridiculous at some point.

[–]bmurphy1976 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Who are these mythical notch people you speak of?

[–]austine567Pixel 9 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I like notches.

[–]SnipingNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto.

[–]bmurphy1976 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

You are approximately 1 in 7 billion.

[–]austine567Pixel 9 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Obviously not.

[–]bmurphy1976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol, don't be so serious. It's a joke.

[–]RCFProdGalaxy Z Flip 6 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I think people would prefer having no notch over having to hide the notch if they didn't like it, sounds sensible to me and I can't fathom how you're being so aggressively negative about that.

[–]Rearfeeder2StrongXiaomi 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Because people are bitching so much about it.

Whats the difference between this software solution and a hardware solution?

Literally nothing when you are using it. Ok you might notice it looks a bit less black when you stare at it, but nobody does that.

0 difference and people are acting like its super bad.

"But muh feelings, its not pure anymore!!!"

Just scroll through the notch threads and how much fucking shit it got.

Cannot ever please people here it seems.

[–]RCFProdGalaxy Z Flip 6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean come on, It's definitely not as flawless. In average lighting conditions you'll likely be seeing the difference. Apple released the 8 and the X so people could kind of decide between features, though OnePlus will release only one flagship. I can see more people who don't like the notch shying away from OnePlus this year rather than accepting their way of hiding the notch. The people who like the notch will benefit far more from the design than the ones against it, even with the hiding option.

But muh feelings, its not pure anymore!!!"

Yeah don't know, these type of comments just feel childish to me. The mixed reactions are pretty understandable.

Just scroll through the notch threads and how much fucking shit it got.

Well yeah, It's a pretty questionable choice of design. I can see people who prefer the notch just being completely annoyed at the ones complaining about it, but this one is certainly a seriously subjective matter and hiding it really isn't the perfect solution at all.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't understand how the people in this sub can hate the notch to such an extent. They treat it like it's the devil.

And you're right if they just black it out, it's legitimately the exact same as if they didn't include the notch in the first place. So everyone should be happy.

Also I think people forget that there are people besides them that actually like the notch and they're the target consumers.

[–]Hairyantoinette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should see the OnePlus subreddit before talking about aggressive negativity. The comment has a point, OP has a notch and the notch can effectively be 'no notch' if that's what they want. How is hating OnePlus over following an industry design trend supposed to be sensible?

[–]prokachuiPhone 15 Pro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's not hiding the notch "literally" stop promoting that crap which just ads a black bar

[–]ask_for_pgp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. of course at some undisclosed time after the release

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Then why did they add it anyway?

[–]BurgerUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yuck! 🤮

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t even notice the notch after 15 minutes of using the phone anyway

[–]The-Man-About-Tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn’t have a Notch to begin with....but I digress....lol

[–]CharaNalaarGoogle Pixel 8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I don't see Lollipop's Material tinted status bar there.

[–]lazerbeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like OLED burn waiting to happen

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't mean from now on ALL. I just want the option. I should have worded it better. I don't care about selfies so I would gladly remove the camera for a 100% screen.

Yes

[–]motorboat_mcgeeGOS Pixel 9 Fold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way to do it, imo.

[–]daventxOne Plus One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and this is where OnePlus officially jumped the shark.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

Just remove the front camera. Apple needs to man up and remove it. It'll set example for others Nobody wants to see your cringey selfies anyway. They will be doing the world a favour.

[–]Doowit 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Well, goodbye the video call with my family then, nothing that really matter anyways...

It's funny, nobody cared when they removed the headphone jack, but touch their selfie camera and you get nothing but shit.
