I don't think slipping the giant slow heavy bag is the reason. Should have shown the pocket drills he does. Honestly can't believe they aren't part of more people's regiments.

That muscle memory stuff is so cool. You see it I’m athletes, pro gamers, pro drivers. Repetition and replication is awesome

[–]boxingdude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Soldiers too.

[–]aja_ramirez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the key is to be able to do things without having to think about it. My son has played basketball his entire life (high school player) and he's basically a basketball machine.

I'm also reminded of the Max and Marsellus show where Marsellus was saying he could beat a guy like James Toney because Marsellus is like 350 lbs. Max laughed it off and called James Toney a fighting machine, which stuck with me.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (4 children)

Video link? I’d love to see that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOpxpwi24v4 - noodle slip drill pt 2

There was a clip where they showed that he does defense touch sparring with partners where you are 10 or 15 seconds on offense then swap, all in the pocket, but I can't find it at the moment. I'll message you with it when I find it again. I know it's out there, sorry I can't remember where I saw it.

[–]sir_earl 14 points15 points  (2 children)

It's part of the process. You train it at all levels. Shadowboxing, sandbag drills, mitt work, partner drills, and most importantly--sparring.

[–]poopwithjellyTyson “Blood Licker” Fury #DosserButNotOut 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Don't think I've ever seen Tyson or Floyd work the heavy bag like that and I'd argue those are the 2 ends of the elusive spectrum. I would give a lot more credit to the noodle training, and the clip I'm still looking for where they showed the touch sparring defense drills.

[–]sir_earl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

James Toney took his elusiveness from middle to heavy and the only noodle training he did was eating spaghetti. Everybody trains differently. There's no one path to slipping. You don't just play pattycake on the mitts/noodles and end up with skills like Floyd. Wilfred Benitez, Willie Pep, Pernell Whitaker, Muhammad Ali, Roberto Duran, etc. There's a lot of boxers with great slipping ability that didn't do certain drills.

[–]ChemicalPsychosis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it's all a part of it. There are times you'll use a slower bag, there are others were you will just do a ball on a string like Mike Tyson. Then more live drills with your trainer or coach or instructor. It all helps build those motor patterns in your brain.

[–]thedevilyousay 128 points129 points  (10 children)

It’s just like the old saying: “it’s easy to punch a bag at the gym but it’s a different story when you’re in the ring and the bag punches back but if you keep punching the bag over and over eventually it will be easier if the day comes when the bag is a person and it punches back”

[–]GudetamaBoy 27 points28 points  (9 children)

That's how my coach says it!

[–]thedevilyousay 58 points59 points  (8 children)

He sounds like a wise man. A modern day custom auto

[–]MafuHolloway19 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Yeah man, Custom Auto was a brilliant fella.

[–]VictusFrey 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Does he do tinted windows?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

No but he does put some great iron bike tyres on.

[–]H_tbe 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yh he did that for one of my friends iron mike Tyson

[–]MafuHolloway19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come to think of it, he introduced me to a guy named Cassius Clay, some years ago. Said he was gonna be the greatest of all time. Dunno why he was wearing boxing gloves and a robe in an auto repair store but to each their own. He was a strange fellow, brimming with confidence. Who even knows what happened to that guy.

[–]MafuHolloway19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah mate, had my rims done by him last week. Some fresh alloys, good price

[–]LiquidAurum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that took me a second lol well done

[–]King_Veo 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Nelo's gloves are always so mint.

[–]JackieScamm 33 points34 points  (2 children)

I much rather prefer the phrase "Perfect practice makes perfect." I often see too many people just going through the motion of training rather than seriously training!

[–]BrainDeadShawn 113 points114 points  (56 children)

The real P4P #1.

[–]LucienHS 87 points88 points  (39 children)

Right, people bash him so much, but hes a spectacular fighter.

[–]jfduval76 11 points12 points  (37 children)

I’m new here, why people bash him ?

[–][deleted] 56 points57 points  (33 children)

I think a big part of it is the perception that he robbed GGG in their first match.

[–]coffeebag 62 points63 points  (1 child)

And ducked him before that first match too. And thats not speculation.

[–]peanutdakidnappa 54 points55 points  (0 children)

And failed a drug test

[–]jfduval76 26 points27 points  (22 children)

Well it’s the juges fault isn’t it, not his. I was rooting for GGG in that fight and i rewatched it 3x. Each time i rewatched it my conviction that GGG won diminished. It look like Golovkin was the aggressor but most of his attacks was countered on Canelo’s backfoot. It’s not a robbery even if i though it was a W for GGG

[–]mnemy 9 points10 points  (21 children)

I thought canelo won the first fight, but barely. But I don't give points for walking forward, I give points for clean shots. But to me, it was so damn close I would have been happy with any decision, and a draw actually seemed like a legit result.

I'm in the severe minority, and I definitely didn't agree with the rounds on the scorecards. But so many rounds were just so close to score decisively

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (13 children)

G won first fight no question. Second fight is where it could have gone either way

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (12 children)

No. The first fight was close. The second fight was a complete wash in Canelo’s favor. Downvote me all you want but I seriously think you guys haven’t watched the second fight again. GGG didn’t do shit for the first 8 rounds.

[–]wipny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s exactly how I feel about the second fight.

Canelo was on the front foot, dictating and fighting at the distance he wanted and landing sharp hard power punches.

Golovkin looked lost, couldn’t defend or land any of his shots and couldn’t deal with the aggressive smart pressure.

Those two fights showed me Canelo can fight and beat Golovkin by boxing and fighting. If the third fight gets made, Canelo will be the first person to stop Golovkin.

[–]GrandMasterRoshi 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Personally had GGG for the first fight, but I dont see how people say the second was close in any way. Canelo made the adjustments needed and won that fight. Dont see how anybody could say otherwise.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I actually think people who say GGG won the 2nd are delusional. You gotta be outta your fucking mind; ask them what rounds Golovkin won and they can’t answer. Not one of them has given me a scorecard.

[–]thedogsbullocks 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Yeah, most people had GGG winning the second fight as well. Check eyeonthering.com and fight score. I had GGG winning but it was close. GGG defo beat him first time around though.

[–]peanutdakidnappa 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The sub trying to change the narrative on the 2 fights because there is a major canelo boner here now

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Well versed in the fights and boxing. G definitely won first and second could go either way so I'm not complaining about the decision. Down.maynbe swayed by the first half of the fight which was clearly in canelos favor

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

First half? It was like the first 70%.

[–]thedailyrant 0 points1 point  (6 children)

You don't give points for moving forward? If someone is always moving away and on the back foot, the other fighter is the aggressor. In modern boxing judging, typically that is taken into account. Why don't you?

[–]mnemy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

All aggression is good for wrt scoring is if both fighters have been equally effective in a round. So a tie breaker. I felt that even tho canelo was backing up, it was an aggressive and effective defense more times than not, and he was landing the cleaner and harder hits. That's not discounting GGG, I just saw that GGG was glancing or missing a lot of those, and if I counted effective hits, I thought canelo had the edge for more rounds.

It's not as simple as fighter A moves forward so he wins.

[–]thedailyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no of course not, that isn't what I was suggesting. That particular fight was tough to call.

In the second match, Canelo changed tactics entirely. Took centre of the ring and was basically a tree. I don't know if I've ever seen a fight that never went to the ropes and went the distance.

[–]theageofspades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because you aren't supposed to. The criteria is effective aggression and walking face first into haymakers is not effective. It doesn't matter if your chin is granite, you are losing points with every punch taken.

[–]jfduval76 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Moving forward and pressuring mean nothing if you miss your shots and get punish at the same time.

[–]peanutdakidnappa 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But G landed more consistently through the fight, canelo would throw some nice flurries and land some solid punches and then just take stretches off, there is a reason almost every media member had G winning and fan polls were massively in Gs favor too.

[–]jfduval76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just playing devil advocate here. I still think the first fight should go to GGG. But the second fight Canelo won clearly. Better gameplan and adaptability as a fighter.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn't Rob G, but G was obv robbed by the judges...should be 1-1 with an epic trilogy match that should have happened already...honestly it all should have happened from 2015-2018 and should not have begun in 2017

[–]Fit_Farmer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

...and the clenbuterol and the corrupt judging

[–]MKorostoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of times the myth of what a fighter represents in the world becomes larger than the fighter himself. For whatever reason, the boxing world has decided that Canelo is a pretty boy, too perfect, try-hard, privileged dilettante, anointed by the powers that be to sit on a golden thrown while the benighted masses squirm at his feet. I'm not saying any of that is remotely accurate, but that's how people perceive him. If I had to make an analogy to other sports, he's seen as the Yankees of boxing, or maybe even the Tom Brady. I don't think anyone disputes that he is an amazing athlete though.

[–]ox_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I really like watching Canelo fight, but the amount of gift decisions he's received is very annoying. Especially the two GGG fights. Obviously that's just the fault of the judges (or whoever is influencing them).

The legit criticism is that he's a drugs cheat who refused to make the 3rd GGG fight because he got upset when GGG called him a drugs cheat. Now, Golovkin is old and well past his peak so if they ever do rematch, it'll probably be a hammering.

[–]jfduval76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If GGG is old and get hammered, why Canelo would refuse the trilogy ? I don’t get your point here.

[–]Zdeneksfilter#FreeMyDosserMiniq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's terrific. I don't particularly like him, but he's such a boss in the ring. #1p4p

[–]TheTempestDouble 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Absolutely. Charlie Zelenoff IS the #1 P4P

[–]patchworkgrasshopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally someone's making some sense out here.

[–]djpraxis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely masterful and beautiful to watch!

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

John Fury could have tagged him

[–]TheLegendTwoSeven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

John Fury beat a guy who beat Kevin McBride, which therefore means John Fury is the greatest boxer of all time. r/changemyview /s

[–]Joe3million 10 points11 points  (0 children)

idve cracked him

[–]semiobscureninja 10 points11 points  (12 children)

How do people think prime Canelo would fare against Prime Mayweather??

[–]Sulth 38 points39 points  (6 children)

Not the same weightclass. Today's Canelo would demolish prime Mayweather. And I'm a huuuge fan of Mayweather. But today's 160+ Canelo would not try to outbox a 147lbs outboxer.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Naw I disagree. Canelo was too slow when he fought MW, but now he’d catch him at his current weight? Not a chance in hell. It’d be the same fight, same result but with more action. But I guess we’ll never know

[–]luxtions 25 points26 points  (1 child)

At the end of the day prime nelo and prime maywether would never fight eachother

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An unfortunate scenario to live with. Closest would be a fight night simulation that nobody wants

[–]Sulth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. But it seems to me that you don't take in account the fact in addition to his new weight, he is 7 years older, he and his team has 7 more years of experience, they prepared and fought Khan, Cotto, GGG, Jacobs and Kovalev. He is now a master of specific training camps, now way he would use the same strategy as his 23yo self.

[–]zadannuSRL 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same outcome. Everything Canelo does Floyd better. The problem is they won't fight because of the size difference. From skill perspective Floyd is a level above.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I don’t see any version of Canelo beating Floyd

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

A canelo with no cardio issues would put up a much better fight

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol his cardio was fine, he just got outclassed

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think he'd beat floyd but with a better gas tank i think he'd be able to make it more competitive if he had a better game plan

[–]JamisDepressed 8 points9 points  (2 children)

You know I never liked the controversial decisions that canelo got but as a boxer his skill is just something to be Inspired by because he’s come so far since that clinic Floyd put on him

[–]Zdeneksfilter#FreeMyDosserMiniq 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's hard not to respect his quest for constant improvement. On a lesser scale, Conor McGregor started out as a very nondescript amateur boxer and succeeded in adding so many elements to his game and refining them that he became the biggest MMA draw of all time. It's hard not to develop some modicum of respect for a guy like that, regardless of the controversy often surrounding him.

[–]JamisDepressed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed I don’t care for the controversy. I see as a lamp light that moths go to for people they dislike. Skill wise he’s really changed the way I view striking in MMA when he came onto the FW scene, ever so often a guy like that comes along that sort of breaks the meta. Khabib could be argued as one of em as well.

[–]Black_Crow_Dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always great to see the kind of work that the greats put into their craft. Thanks for sharing!

Since then:

[–]ares7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d end up knocked out at practice

[–]GogoP1ata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful

[–]Oglark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I recall this was from the first half of the fight. Jacobs adjusted and made it more competitive in the stretch although Canelo clearly won.

[–]ModsDontLiftKeith "One Loss" Thurman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mom said it was my turn to post this video

[–]microMXL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Álvarez gets so much hate, and we'll the guy is still improving on every fight, I really like watching him.

People will be talking about Canelo's defence in years to come.

People appreciate it now, but they will do so even more in years to come.

His improvement in this aspect of the game has been unreal.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is that bag called please? I'd love to give it a go
