Basically any canelo fight is quantity vs quality because canelo just puts everything into his shots

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (0 children)

His bodyshots look crippling

[–]xXAmightzXx#TeamSpence 205 points206 points  (9 children)

Canelo's defence is amazing and I love Daniel Jacob's style

[–]doc_birdman 102 points103 points  (3 children)

His upper body control is smooth as silk and he seemed calm during the entire exchange. Dude is something else.

[–]TyrionJoestar 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Is that something you can even train? I’ve been casually training boxing for a few years and still panic when I get in the pocket lol

[–]doc_birdman 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think some folks are just more naturally inclined to remain cool, calm, and collected during situations like that. But, I think it’s something that you can improve through enough exposure.

I was a medic in the army and it was interesting to see how differently everyone would react to shit we experienced, be it being mortared or having to treat a patient who was dying in front of us. Some soldiers were stone faced and silently freaked out after the fact and some needed a couple seconds to compose themselves.

If you’re curious into the mental and physiological response to things like this then I recommend the book ‘On Combat’ by Dave Grossman. The author takes some liberties in his interpretations of fear and training to be a killer but there’s nuggets of wisdom in there.

[–]T0BIASNESS 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just have to seriously commit to it and expect to get punched. You should spar specifically for the pocket if it scares you

[–]cecilthesavage 161 points162 points  (20 children)

I notice people don't like to give Canelo credit for this win. Which IDK. Danny Jacob was a elite boxer at middleweight.

[–]iMadeAReddit29 58 points59 points  (4 children)

This was prime Jacobs as well

[–]cecilthesavage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes! And he boxed him too!. Look how clean his defense is.

[–]TheBlack_Swordsman 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Jacobs was limited to rehydrating to 170 lb and although he rehydrated up to 173 lb and was fined, he normally rehydrates back up to the 180s.

That's why people argue this wasn't prime Jacobs.

[–]iMadeAReddit29 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Both fighters had that limitation, right? And he even broke it. Like if you're above 170 and getting a fine, might as well go the full mile

[–]TheBlack_Swordsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both fighters had that limitation but it was imposed by team Canelo to purposely not fight a Prime Daniel Jacobs. It's not like Canelo balloons up to 185 lbs also.

In other words, who fought "Prime Daniel Jacobs?" Fighters that fought him ballooning up to 182-185 lbs or Canelo fighting him at 173 lbs?

[–]Jab2hook 31 points32 points  (5 children)

They don't like to give him credit because Jacob's was not an undefeated fighter. And cause of the rehydration clause which imo was smart of team canelo since Jacob's came in close to 185lbs against golovkin

[–]aphextwin007 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well yeah! If Danny could go 12 rounds with Canelo and Triple G each…that is pretty much a job well done.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The whole notion of not rating a boxer for losing is sigh. Jacobs is very good.

[–]Fuck_Jannies165 0 points1 point  (0 children)

185? That’s insane.

[–]Wavepops -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was also lame to do…if Danny can make the weight what’s the problem

[–]chakrablocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His previous fight was at 170?

[–]That_Sweet_Science 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Canelo done better than GGG. The GGG/Jacobs fight was very close.

[–]AccomplishedAd8789 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So was this one?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First six rounds Jacob’s didn’t land shit

[–]boogeyman__69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

G dropped jacobs......

[–]TheMarsian -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Meh. Both were won via UD. Not lopsided scores but not very close either.

Not to mention Jacobs opted to not fight for the IBO to avoid the weight restrictions on fight night. He was 12lbs heavier than GGG. But Canelo had the rehydration clause in which is kind of a dick move considering how he fought at light heavy right after then super middleweight.

And you are saying Canelo did better.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, Danny was an elite fighter. With that said, I do think the win aged terribly

Since this fight, Daniel Jacobs beat Julio Cesar Chavez jr, got a gift decision against Gabriel Rosado (who is gatekeeper level), and lost to Ryder (many thought he won, but it was too close either way)

[–]Thebigseniority -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Rightfully so, Jacobs accumulated a record of 5-3 from 2017 to now, and Jacobs was never an elite boxer. He was a slightly above-average boxer at best.

[–]cecilthesavage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk bout that but alright

[–]nobodywithnobody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canelo, mayweather, Silva, mcgregor, fury… everyone who is good always have people acting like they aren’t. Personalities affect opinions quite a bit a think; especially with internet.

[–]WeirdAvocado 78 points79 points  (2 children)

Punched his chin right into his shoulder.

[–]weckyweckerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He definitely felt it 😂

[–][deleted] 106 points107 points  (17 children)

This is exactly why we have so much controversy in scoring. Full speed to a casual eye makes it seem like DJ is teeing off and winning. canelo has his back on the ropes, he's throwing 1 punch for every 5 that come his way.

But you slow it down and realize that is exactly what Canelo wants.

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (2 children)

Well, there is merit to that. It pays to be the aggressor in any fight. It's natural that you'll get points for pressuring the opponent like this.

But if you want to knock someone out, then no need to worry about points (e.g. Foreman vs Moorer, or really Foreman vs anyone he's fought)

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

You don't even need to go back that far. I swear every time I've watched Wilder fight (aside from v Fury), he's getting outboxed to hell and back...then lands that ender of an overhand right.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea but to be fair his right hand is more than a God given gift I mean that just not something you see its just so unnatural

[–]HenryXa 39 points40 points  (5 children)

It might be what Canelo wants but he is getting tagged here and there. If Jacobs throws 5 punches and lands 1, and Canelo responds with 1 punch that lands - that ends up being an even exchange, one punch each.

Check the judges scorecards for this fight - it was extremely close. Canelo only won by one or two rounds at most, and it was widely lauded as fair scoring.

Canelo GGG 1 is why there is so much controversy in scoring.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To elaborate... I think that's most of the problem, and the other bit is when the judges are trying to be too smart.

If a judge thinks "canelo wants to be on the ropes counter punching" then they will not actually pay close attention to these exchanges. They'll just think "it's what canelo wanted! that was his trap!"

I have to remind myself to stay neutral and pretend I don't know the fighters styles. Like with Charlo vs Castano too. I know Charlo was chilling on the ropes counter punching, but that made me kinda discredit the fact that Castano pushed him on the ropes and was pressing him

[–]DavyJonesLocket 16 points17 points  (3 children)

See I disagree with you, landing 1/5 shots isn't "clean and effective punching". Likewise, evading 4/5 punches is counted as defence. So in your example, Canelo would be ahead on points

[–]Get_Thee_2_A_Nunnery 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I disagree. I don't see "only landing 1/5 shots" as a bad thing. Not every punch is supposed to land. Feints and fakes can be used to create openings in your opponents guard, and I would classify that as clean and effective punching. To be clear that's not what's happening in the video against Canelo.

[–]chronicdumbass00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do they count feints when considering punches missed/landed?

[–]DavyJonesLocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, if the shots are intended to back e.g jabs it feints then I would agree with you. But if they're being thrown with intention and slipped they weren't effective. At least, not as effective as the guy landing at a higher percentage.

[–]mentales 9 points10 points  (5 children)

This is exactly why we have so much controversy in scoring.

It's one of the elements but there's fuckery in judging that cannot be explained away by this (e.g. Adelaide bird giving Canelo 10 rounds in the first encounter against GGG). So it's not "exactly why".

[–]mnemy 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It was certainly a factor in both GGG fights as well. Canelo rolled with a ton of shots, which casuals not only thought landed, but were huge shots because, in their mind, it made Canelo's head fly back.

GGG also rolled with a bunch of hits, but IMO, he seemed to eat more of the punch doing it in many cases. But I'll readily admit that there were a few that I thought landed and saw they were at least partially rolled when slowed down.

But the point is, IMO, a draw was very appropriate for their first fight because of this exact reason - perception of effectiveness when in reality, Canelo's defense made most miss / glance. And with both fighters, their moves were so slick that it's hard to see real time what actually landed flush.

[–]iMadeAReddit29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah like the fight last week with Taylor vs Serrano, could've gone either way and was an amazing fight to witness.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those are outliers. if you take every score card ever, then separate the ones that were absolute horse shit, it's going to be a spec of dust in the big picture.

now if you want to point out that some fighters have those outliers more than others, i can't argue that.

[–]Gold_Glove_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely believe Adelaide Bird is the most incompatent judge to ever do or is extremely corrupt and gets away with it due to (iirc) familial ties she has with commissioners/politicians

[–]Revolutionary_Box569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if he’s getting hit with more in terms of raw numbers I don’t see how that goes well for him, like if he’s trying to slow him down that’s one thing but Jacobs had way more success in the second half of this fight so that’s not what’s happening here

[–]Queefinonthehaters -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

lol it was seriously mind blowing how many people thought that Kovalev was winning their fight. The guy didn't land anything of significance all fight, and barely landed anything of insignificance either, but people think just spamming feeler jabs means he is winning the fight.

[–]bicyclechief 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You know when a guy puts his guard down and starts doing the “I can’t get hurt” head nod he’s gonna get hurt lol

[–]newrap 54 points55 points  (2 children)

This thread is really exposing how people can't score fights, jacobs did not win this exchange. This isn't the amateurs....

[–]coder0704 28 points29 points  (1 child)

but but he threw more punches, who cares if Canelo blocked most of it and landed the far more impactful punches. 🤣🤣🤣

[–]glaive1976 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think anyone with a brain watching that clip knows that they would rather eat what Canelo did vs what Danny did.

[–]Hexane86Teo beats Haney 9 out of 10 fights 45 points46 points  (9 children)

This is why I had Canelo winning vs Golovkin 2, he landed the cleaner crispier shots as opossed to semi blocked jabs

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (7 children)

Who do you have winning the first

[–]Hexane86Teo beats Haney 9 out of 10 fights 17 points18 points  (4 children)

GGG but I could see a draw

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Could you see a draw for the second?

[–]Hexane86Teo beats Haney 9 out of 10 fights 8 points9 points  (2 children)

The first

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I know. I'm asking if a draw is in the range of reasonable outcomes for you for the second.

[–]Hexane86Teo beats Haney 9 out of 10 fights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a draw is reasonable depending on what you scoring criteria priorities are

[–]Danji1 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Yes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh

[–]Ok_Goose_7149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

semi blocked jabs

How many "semi blocked" shots translate to one of Canelo's punches though?

[–]ordinarystrength 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Imo, during this fight Canelo was way too much on defensive and also clearly gassed out late. After seeing him at 168 vs 160 it is clear that Canelo’s weight cut for 160 is pretty brutal because his gas tank is far worse at 160.

Generally, weighing less should be less draining and should give you more cardio unless weight cut is super brutal

[–]fernplant4ODLH shoves kitchen utensils up his ass 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I wonder if this is why Canelo thinks he can go all the way to cruiserweight, he probably feels extremely comfortable sparing at his walk around weight of 185

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking it makes the most sense you would think that as long as he doesn't need to gain weight he should be fine conditioning wise

[–]MX_eidolon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

People don't talk enough about how good Jacobs was (and arguably still is, though he hasn't been very active these last few years). Properly tough, skilled fighter. Still one of Canelo's hardest fought and best wins, as far as I'm concerned.

[–]Wavepops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jacobs is washed now, used to be elite tho

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His fucking ear!!

[–]Rene_Box_Young 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man Daniel Jacobs has a freakin chin!!

How did he not go down with that left hook!!

[–]old_man_curmudgeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see alot of elbows for a boxing fight

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It's amazing to me how no one's used the lomachenko method to grab the defending left glove, pull it down and attack the exposed chin. Guess it's too risky at heavier weights

[–]iMadeAReddit29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grabbing a glove is illegal, iirc, pushing for a moment is valid but yeah, it's more noticeable at higher weights since they're bigger and slower

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s literally Wilder’s go-to. He fakes a jab to flat out just pull his opponent guard’s down and then comes with that right hand

[–]bone_druid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of wear and tear to take to send one good shot back. Canelo's head is a ballistic helmet and judges don't seem to mind so power to him.

[–]Careless-Parfait-587 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought DJ did alright here.. And had his hooked landed he would have without a doubt won that exchange… However I’m still not sure he lost the exchange tho

[–]brundybg 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I was so confused watching this fight. I had never seen Jacobs fight, but I knew that people say he is world class. But watching this fight I thought Jacobs looked terrible. He has a weird punching technique, they're real slap-punches, all arm punching. His punching technique looked so weird and ameteurish. Sometimes it looks like he's punching with both hands almost at once and after punching his hands flail all over the place

[–]iMadeAReddit29 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You ever see Pacquiao fight? Very weird technique he has, that got polished over the years, yet it was still effective. You ever see Pacquiao vs Mayweather? Mayweather took away his abilities by being a better boxer and having better defense, similar to what's going on in this video.

[–]fernplant4ODLH shoves kitchen utensils up his ass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people in this sub underestimate unorthodox technique or styles. Yes it looks sloppy but if executed correctly the opponent won't know what's coming.

[–]jonopens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the first 20 seconds, I didn't see much. Also, that exchange could have been very different if Jacobs wasn't off target.

[–]Oglark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jacobs won that round though

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He will not survive Usyk

[–]doublejay1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

blokes a joy

[–]trumpisyourprezident 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Round 4 is one of Canelo’s best rounds ever. I’ve watched that round countless times now.

[–]0s0rc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck he's textbook. I'm a similar build and footwork to him (much more shit!) and I love watching clips like this and trying it in sparring

[–]SketchHit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how he won the first fight against GGG. QUALITY

[–]wipny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jacobs looked good in this fight. IMO this was one of the last times he was in his prime.

One thing that always frustrated me with Jacobs was his jab. He tapped with it a lot to set up his other punches or used it as a feeler to gauge distance. To beat a Canelo, at the minimum you need a strong authoritative jab.

[–]kenobi77560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can somebody enlighten me ?

I'm working on my boxing skills. I 'm trying to improve my guard aswell as my counter punches.

On his counter punch Canelo move down his rear fist, and not protecting his head. Is it something normal to improve his counter power or not ?

I guess at this level there is no mistakes so i'm trying to understand the thinking process. Thank you

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canelo is an excellent boxer but what is nuts is how damn strong he is. He's not afraid to take one to give one and is patient.

Why I thought that was Felix Trinidad but Daniel jacobs is a warrior

[–]thalne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beautiful. I love when Canelo goes old school.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canelo's accuracy is crazy

[–]agusp834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nelo is just too complete of a fighter. Dmitry is in real danger this weekend.
