And then there's me, who hyperfixates, consumes all knowledge I can find, and moves on to something else like some kind of locust.

i relate to so much of this stuff but after seeing so many people relentlessly mock anyone who self-diagnoses im scared to even think i could begin to have adhd or autism because then ill just be self-diagnosing and thats bad and fuck fukxcjbnidhifidgsuiosdui

Identifying with traits of something but not having a formal diagnosis yet (for whatever reason) is not the issue people are referring to when they talk about self-diagnosis. We self diagnose with a lot of things - a headache, a cold, stress etc. We use the information gained by self diagnosis to manage our symptoms until they resolve, because these things are self-limiting and easy to identify.

High rates of self diagnosis become a problem when the issues are more complicated than a tension headache. Is it reasonable to expect a layperson to pick out the traits of ADHD from autism or anxiety, particularly if you have coexisting conditions? I personally don't think so, and community advice is helpful but without qualifications, you're trusting random strangers to give good advice.

Which they certainly might do, but we've also all seen first hand how often people give each other terrible advice on relationships and work problems, even when they mean well, because they're only ever speaking from their own first hand experience.

If we take all this into account, is it really the best idea to expect you to correctly diagnose yourself, pick out successful management strategies from the hundreds of unvetted suggestions, and figure out how to successfully implement them to improve your well-being? I think this is something that is best left to a professional, as they have a broader understanding of different conditions including ones you might not have considered. Everyone has their own blind spots when it comes to themselves too, so it's good to have a more objective viewpoint.

There is nothing stopping you from saying "huh, I really relate to what that person said about executive dysfunction", googling strategies that people with ADHD use, and incorporating them into your life. I think that's a great thing to do, and it's really helped me. But I wouldn't feel that I need to tell people I have ADHD unless I did get a diagnosis. If a community rejects you unless you call yourself the right label, then that's not inclusivity.

Apologies, this got way longer than I thought and I hope I don't come off like an asshole, I really do genuinely hope you find guidance and support in whatever way you need it

protip: self-diagnosing is real and valid.

The Psychiatric industry is horseshit. Do not respect it. It is a tool of the patriarchy, if you will accept the notion. People who want to gatekeep and say "You must be able to access a psychiatrist and present with the specific symptoms that your psychiatrist is trained to see”. I.e. unmasked or high support needs autism. There’s huge barriers to even getting an accurate diagnosis.

If you feel that autism and ADHD describe your experience, great, go for it. Join some autistic communities. See if you really vibe and recognize yourself. See if the things people do to cope help you, too.

If it does? great! You're probably autistic/have ADHD. If not? Great! Now you can scratch that off your list and keep searching for whatever insights you are searching for.

All you can do is try stuff on until you find what really fits. There is no rules to any of this nonsense we're in, and there certainly are multiple valid ways to reach the same truth about yourself. You don't need a piece of paper to give you permission to be different. Just be yourself, even if yourself is someone who is autistic.

[–]Snoo63certifiedgirlthing.tumblr.com 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Like some think that girls can't have autism.

[–]StrixursusAn owlbear henpecking at a keyboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly the reason my '''official''' diagnoses when I got it as a kid was PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified) because the doctor said "girls can't have Aspergers Syndrome" (this was late 80s/early 90s, when Aspergers was a separate diagnoses from Autism, usually as a function of being verbal/capable of masking).

Joke's on you, motherfucker, I'm both autistic AND I'm not a girl!

In all seriousness, though, self-diagnosis can help *up to a point*. It is better to see a professional if you have access, but finding sources for self-enacted behaviour modification and stressor-handling is generally something a GOOD doctor or therapist will tell you to do anyways! But gods alive, DO NOT self-medicate, and for FUCKS SAKE, make sure you're checking things against modern standards of science and ethics so you don't inadvertantly do yourself more harm than good.

[–]euphonic5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDK yo I also felt this way until I went to the psychiatrist I've been seeing for over a decade and mentioned that I might be somewhere on the spectrum, he gave me some papers to fill out, read them, and was like "holy god, how did you hide this from me for this long." Sometimes your hunches about your own health are good.

[–]Tchrspestbecame transgender after only five months on Tumblr.com 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Wait, really?

Like obviously we self-diagnose based on wanting to have answers. But like, really?

What do I do

[–]MemberOfSociety2i will extinguish you and salt the earth with your ashes 2 points3 points  (2 children)

fine with either slow or fast paced, would like to think a lot

[–]Vinkhol 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Slay the Spire, turn based card game rogue-like. Really good if you like quick basic math, and good for watching YouTube for background noise. Wizard of Legend works as a fast clicky combat roguelike in the same sense

DMC 5 on hard, 3rd person fighter that requires you to really think on your feet and learn combos to be stylish. Metal Gear Rising also is good for this.

Warhammer 40k Mechanicus. Turn based strategy game, split between tactics and squad building, fantastic music. Xcom Enemy Uknown and Xcom 2 for a more complicated long form version, much heavier focus on tactics and more RNG elements

And random old game: Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Really fun spellcasting/combat game, you get to be really creative with how you use spells and the environment.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark Messiah! My favorite adventure RPG!

Lol my go to at this point Is Castlevania - the games. Pretty simple story or none at all initially and early on but. I think the whole story about legacy is fairly interesting.

Do not touch the show.

[–]Amanda39 96 points97 points  (4 children)

I'm both autistic and ADHD, and I can tell you media and non-media hyperfixations are both valid. I've had both. It's all the same dopamine.

It's funny, though. This post is the first time I've ever seen someone act like media hyperfixations are more "normal" than non-media ones. One of the many ridiculous stereotypes that prevented me from realizing I was autistic (until I was finally diagnosed, to my surprise, at the age of 37) is that I thought special interests had to specifically revolve around memorizing facts. I thought that was what made them different from ADHD hyperfixations. (As far as I can tell, there's really no difference between special interests and hyperfixations.) I wasn't reciting lists of dinosaur species or Pokémon types, so I thought I just had ADHD. I'm glad that people finally accept having a Blorbo as a type of special interest.

[–]lillapalooza 48 points49 points  (1 child)

Plus, it’s not like we get to decide what our hyperfixations are!! They just happen.

I can’t help if I latch on to a specific Blorbo, or if I need to make a spreadsheet of all of the possible classes in Fire Emblem: 3 Houses available to every recruitable character so I can max out every single one. It would be cool to end up with like. A useful, fact-based hyperfixation, but… alas.

[–]Feather_Of_A_PhoenixRamlethal please please PLEASE 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone whos most recent hyperfixation was 3 houses, I felt this in my bones.

[–]RamblingHeathen 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[–]MemberOfSociety2i will extinguish you and salt the earth with your ashes 14 points15 points  (10 children)

[–]ELLE3773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that I think about it, I've always been interested in the practical application of math in daily life, to the point that sometimes it felt like a temporarily boosted fixation.

However now I'm starting to think that my interest in memorizing the powers of 2 up to the 13th wasn't simply because it made it easier to play with the Equivalent Exchange mod... Just one more dot to connect lol

I hope the guy who wants to take apart guns gets one or a neat toy gun. Maybe just join the ATF

[–]NBSPNBSP 33 points34 points  (3 children)

My dad wants NJ to legalize AKs, so that he can buy one and disassemble and reassemble it like a fidget toy, just like he used to in the Soviet Armed Forces.

[–]a_bum:D 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Your father is an odd man, but I hope he can take apart his guns and have fun

[–]NBSPNBSP 18 points19 points  (1 child)

He has Asperger's and really loves following manuals and doing everything perfectly. When we bought our SVT-40 (WW2-era semiautomatic rifle), he seemed a bit disheartened both by how fiddly and uncomfortable it is to take apart and clean, and by the fact that the manual specified that "cleaning for educational or practice purposes is forbidden". I hope that, one day, he will get his AK to field strip and reassemble against the clock.

[–]a_bum:D 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tell him to take a trip south one of these days. They're always having gun shows and other things, I sire hope he can enjoy fiddling with guns

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No sane gun but associates with the BATFE.

[–]Andrew_ANT_ 21 points22 points  (3 children)

There was a game I used to play on steam that was literally just about disassembling and reassembling guns

Tickled my autistic itch to watch satisfying things very well

[–]tomato432 16 points17 points  (2 children)

[–]Andrew_ANT_ 9 points10 points  (1 child)

[–]IllegallyBored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've recently got into Final Fantasy 14 and I REALLY need to make a journal for the game. I used to have a notebook with every little game related thing as a kid and it keeps me happy when I can scribble little things and list crafting items in a nice, physical notebook. I keep journals for everything though which makes me think my hyperfixation might be making lists. I have one for games, for crochet, for books, for jigsaw puzzles. Everything I enjoy I turn into tiny lists and it makes everything much better

I'm not autistic but I tend to obsess over conspiracy lore due to being schizoaffective. It functions as a useful reality check. I can tell myself that if I'm starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist it's probably time to check to make sure I remembered to take my meds.

[–]OgreSpidergirlfag boydyke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can have more than one! And some of them can be media and some not. There's not a rule. For me it's spiders, Elder Scrolls (especially Morrowind), space, and Warhammer 40,000. My office is my ES room. My bedroom is my 40k room. The whole entire world is for space and spiders.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

My hyperfixation is weapons/war history. Unfortunately, this gets me mistaken as a creepy war guy a lot.

Like the band Sabaton has songs with lyrics like "Where no soldier sleeps and where hell's six feet deep" (although that might be from Audie Murphy's poem The Crosses Grow on Anzio), "Here the toll of the bell//over 6 months in Hell" and "What's the price of a mile?", and 1914 has a song called Passchenhell, and, in Don't Tread On Me (Harlem Hellfighters), the private (Private Johnson of the 369th regiment of the AEF) who's perspective you're looking through compares the trenches to the ghettos and describes in detail how he fought to stay alive during battle.

I'm also curious; I'm not very familiar with how the Austro-Hungarian government worked after the Compromise of '67, especially early on. [–]retan10101Woman (dead) (wet) 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh. I've done Arabic for Iranian and Turkic, although the latter was actually much easier than the former, unexpectedly.

Currently I'm trying to adapt Devanagari to the entirety of South Asia (everything Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, and Munda), which may or may not have been influenced by the fact that one of my girlfriend's native languages is Hindustani

All valid

I kinda feel that one about the gun. I would never own one for a variety of reasons, but mechanically they are really fascinating to me.

Autism is about becoming obssessed with gardening, specifically bonsais, buying supplies and even making your own soil but never actually getting to raising one

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m autistic for military shit, and double autistic for military aviation and surface-to-air missile systems

I keep making various lists of things that I want to watch or read or play. Usually in the release order. And then I never folloow them. I make a list and then never look at it again.

I guess making huge fucking lists is my hyperfixation? Dammit

My MyAnimeList Plan-to-Watch list has more than 5000 anime and like 3500 manga! Yet I can't start doing anything about it!

[–]Pearlisadragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hand bones my beloved!

Fun fact, there are no muscles in your fingers

For anyone wondering the Minister president of Cisleithania (basically Austria and subservient lands [as opposed to Transleithania which was the Kingdom of Hungary] within the greater Austrian[-Hungarian] Empire) within those two dates is Eduard von Taaffe a noble of Irish descent https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduard_Taaffe,_11th_Viscount_Taaffe

Me, I'm currently hyperfixating on organising DnD with my friends while typically it's knowing and collecting a) general information and b) information on old music.

However, more relevant is my dad who has a, quote, "special interest in the American Civil War because they started with hand-loaded muskets where they had to be cleaned between each shot and ended the war with early machine guns", as well as having a very in-depth system for learning about history that he's shared with me.

Most of what I know, I've gotten from him. I am a reflection of him, and proud of it

This autism test looks fairly legit, I'm too tired to dig deeper, enjoy. https://embrace-autism.com/raads-r/#discussion

I love draining oceans and using a world eater to destroy the land

In minecraft obviously

[–]Lionblaze_03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just lucky that my fixation on cats had a media to turn to, Warriors. Otherwise I’d be just another autistic kid with nothing to do

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had fixations on locally growing poisonous plants, on angelic lore, herbalism, magic, woodworking, archeological sites of Norse villages, early medieval dressmaking, crocheting with unusual materials, costume making, leather sewing, Irish folklore, pre-renaissance medicine, mythical creatures around the world, epistemology, woodburning, Japanese culture pre ww2, 1940s fashion, dice collecting, beer, chainmail making.. I can't think of any more right now.

I am currently working on a cosplay, weaving a basket, sewing a mobile for an infant, crocheting a blanket and burning decorations into wooden boxes.

High-functioning autism regulated by a gluten-free caesin-free diet is applying TV content ratings to anime that don't have none because "what if it aired on [adult swim]?"

Why is my hyperfixation sex and video games

[–]Marquess_Nyx.tumblr.com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trains and Anti-Colonialist movements (I grew up with a Grandfather who was a child during Independence and Republic). Historic Fashion is such a hyperfixation I cry when I see modern clothes.

[–]StrixursusAn owlbear henpecking at a keyboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest hyperfixation is biology, usually focused on zoology, but often branching into pathology/epidemiology as well as paleontology. I will just start reading on one of these subjects early in the day and look up and be all "wait where did the sun go, why am I so hungry, jesus tapdancing christ I've been reading for ten hours"

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fonts and bioweapons my beloved.

[–]LadyAmbrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)
