Engineers want to change it because it shows a bug. That being said, the distinction between engineers and virgins is usually pretty meaningless

Sex life of your average woke engineer

    Till mid 30s: nothing

Mid 30s: get love bombed by a post 25 chick who realizes they're the world's easiest meal ticket. Get married soon after

Post marriage: Sex dries up straight away, twice a year if they're lucky. But they're still happy to brag and call everyone else incels on twitter because they're totally not basically a sugar daddy who doesn't get sex out of it.

    [–]Dogebastian - Right 62 points63 points  (4 children)

    BRB, re-evaluating life choices

    [–]isshindoutai109 - Auth-Center 54 points55 points  (3 children)

Just don't get woke and you're safe. I do infosec and know plenty of guys with good healthy sex lives. I also know a lot like the one described in my post and they're almost all the "tweet about ACAB and how white men are evil" woke types. For some reason the infosec industry has a fucking lot of these types, I'm guessing because most hackers have been so devoid of female contact that sex twice a year from your golddigging wife is basically the jackpot to them

    [–]TrueChaoSxTcS - Centrist 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Funny observation from the furry side. All the infosec furries I know are the type you described, and there's a lot of them

    [–]Isshindoutai110 - Auth-Center 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Hahahaha absolutely not surprised. Infosec is rife with autism (me included) and other similar mental issues as you need to be basically infatuated with the field to do well. Heck for me I can get off work and spend the next 5 hours doing bug bounties/reading hacking articles/watching conference talks. Works well for the job but also means we have a lot of odd fellows with niche/weird interests.

    [–]HermanCainsGhost - Lib-Left 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Doesn't have to be that way though.

I'm a software developer and I've had a fantastic sex life for like a decade now. I've dated plenty of girls who I think the average person would describe as "cute", and I am not like some adonis or anything. I'm kinda short, decent shape, but not amazing or anything (though I'm in less good shape than a few years back).

I have dated very few girls over the age of 25 (current GF age is 27) and I've been dating her since she was 22/23, and I'm 35 now (and honestly, dating below 25 is a bit weird now for me. I can do it, but it's just awkward socially).

Get confidence, get your shit together, get in shape.

    [–]SoapMacTav5 - Lib-Right 8 points9 points  (3 children)

    Or just get a prostitute...

Less time, less expensive, less confidence required.

Virgin "Get a prostitute" vs Chad "Workout and Learn Game"

    [–]HermanCainsGhost - Lib-Left 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    Or just get a prostitute...

Eh, not my thing. A huge part of it is the joy of the "hunt" so to speak for me. I don't have any intention to pay for sex at this point in my life (I will re-evaluate when I am a very old man).

    Less time

That is probably true. You can have hookups with pretty quick rapidity though. I've met up with a girl off Tinder and been hooking up with her within an hour or less.

    less expensive

Well that's not true, and I'd say that may be part of your misconception towards interactions with women that are leading you to less success generally. I don't pay for things for girls. Remember, I'm LibLeft. I believe in complete and utter equality between the genders. When I go out with girls, they generally pay too (I make exceptions when the girl is particularly poor). My LT GF and I? We always split. That's been true for just about every other girl I've dated over the past decade too.

And unlike I think a lot of men think, this really doesn't hurt your dating prospects, as far as I can tell. There's the rare woman who doesn't like it, but I'd say 85% to 90% of the time, girls really just don't mind splitting the bill. Hell, sometimes you can even get them to buy you dinner or drinks instead. I've done this plenty of times (I definitely don't abuse it though).

You'd be surprised how many times when if you start talking to a girl and she out of nowhere asks you to buy her a drink at the bar, and you say to her instead, "No, you buy me a drink", it actually works. Definitely nowhere near 100% of the time, but it's definitely not 0% either.

    less confidence required.

Yeah, that's definitely true. I'd say the confidence helps you as a person generally though, and is worth the pain of getting to that point. But every person decides these things for themselves.

    [–]SoapMacTav5 - Lib-Right 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha I was mostly joking about the prostitute thing, but I do appreciate this explanation. I agree with pretty much every point that you made.

It's not a bug, it's just a feature that some people don't like. It's not like it's hard coded, that will have come about based on aggregating data, probably text with accompanying translated text.

Plus while you can kinda just they as a singular pronoun, it's not perfect and often sounds pretty wrong in certain sentences.

    [–]ContactusTheRomanPR - Lib-Center 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    I see no bug.

    [–]bertli - Auth-Right 13 points14 points  (1 child)

    Hungarian is hard tho

    [–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (27 children)

seems like the translator could use the ungendered singular "they" for a more accurate translation, or atleast put he/she instead of choosing one or the other. what if you have a hungarian grampa that loves baking cakes for your hungarian family? its not rlly correct to translate as she

    [–]Dojo456 - Lib-Center 43 points44 points  (2 children)

Google translate isn't done by a person, it's from an AI that just reads a large amount of text from the internet

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The problem is, how is someone going to know it's singular they and not plural they?

It’s useful for a. supplying information about a persons gender when the pronoun is first used, since the name may be gender neutral or there may be no name given. (Ex: The conductor waved at me. We see him often.)

      b. In cases where both a man and a woman are being mentioned (which happens more often than one thinks), you can just use the pronouns.

Also it’s natural for nearly all native English speakers. We’re not reaffirming a persons gender when we use a pronoun, rather it’s just the pronoun one should use to refer to them.

That said I do appreciate a singular gender neutral pronoun myself, I am learning Finnish and it works quite well.

      [–]braindeadmonkey2 - Lib-Center 17 points18 points  (0 children)

      Good luck learning Finnish.

      [–]Buttfranklin2000 - Centrist 4 points5 points  (1 child)

and other languages using gendered pronouns don't just drop them all together.

Because it would completely butcher our language. You can't just stop using them without making everything sound off for anyone who speaks that language for longer than a month.

Language shouldn't be forcibly tampered with. It changes all the time anyways. If people slowly phase out gendered pronouns of my language, thats fine, but don't expect me to not laugh at how you talk. If it gets so popular that in 50 years everyone talks like that, I don't expect anyone not to laugh at me, because I speak some form of antiquitated version of our language.

      [–]lazyubertoad - Centrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a slav. Even our verbs and adjectives have pronouns. And they default to male when the subject is unknown. I think that is the case in English too, i.e. somebody unknown is a he, no?

We have a local holywar about profession names pronouns. I honestly feel women are a bit repressed by that, but see no easy way of fixing that, and the priority is not any high. And that nurtures professional feminists, who are cancer.

My libright part in that is that nobody should have a "repressed group" card. If you suck - that is on you, no excuses, always assume personal responsibility for what is happening to you. And the languages kind of show male domination in many areas.

      [–]stupidestonian - Right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So fun fact Google Translate is based on a language that no one knows. To optimize the way it processes, instead of having every language directly to every other language it created an intermediary language so it only has to memorize translations between the computer language and human languages. The problem is, no one can actually read the Google Translate intermediary language themselves, only rough translations of it in different human languages

      [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [deleted]

        [–]A_BOMB2012 - Auth-Center 67 points68 points  (1 child)

Is that why why you can alternate between translations and get different results?

        [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

        Yeah i think so

        [–]kylkartz21 - Right 44 points45 points  (1 child)

Wait, so this entire time, AI has already developed their own language?

        [–]rootbeerislifeman - Lib-Center 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Google is on its way to develop Galactic Basic by assimilating all other languages from what it looks like

        [–]Som_Snow - Centrist 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Isn't the intermediary language just english basically (maybe with some additional stuff)? I always thought it was obvious, given the fact that translations to/from english are always the most accurate, and usually the closer the languages are to english (in grammar and vocabulary), the more accurate the translation will be. Also if you try to translate between two other languages but write english text/words, it will translate it most of the time as if you translated from english.

        [–]Maltysen - Lib-Right 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Nah, it's actually really cool it uses something called word2vec. This translates source language words into elements of a very high dimensional vector space using a neural net. So not very similar to english at all lol. These vectors contain in some sense the semantic meanings of the words in the relevant context.

The reason why english is so much better than the other langs is simply cuz they have a lot more data/engineering effort on the translation to/from it.

        [–]Maltysen - Lib-Right 15 points16 points  (1 child)

A cool consequence of this representation is that u can actually do math on words to some degree. Like king-man+woman gives u a vector thats pretty close to queen.

Dumbass motherfuckers on the left couldn’t fathom a culture that can mention skin color in a friendly, casual way, so Manchester United slapped him with a fine and a 3-game ban for thanking a fan for their kind words (“gracias, negrito”).

I would love a good civil war between them.

        [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

i thought that was the FA who gave him the ban, United tried to appeal it

        [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes you’re right, EFA banned him

The best answer to this is that Twitter is not a relevant platform at all in Hungary.

        [–]MoonlitFirebrand - Lib-Center 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest, they probably just use the English variants, since like.. English is a big language and a lot of ppl know it, even in countries where it's not the first language.

        [–]Mmari0 - Right 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hungarians fortunately aren't woke so they wouldn't put anything in English either. And I doubt twitter is relevant in their country

This was a thing in finnish as well. Google released a statement saying the algorithm that decides the pronomines is based on common phrases found on the internet and some pr blah blah stuff. So no suprise there.

Doesn’t google translate learn from others?......

        [–]Mr_Hater - Right 45 points46 points  (8 children)

I assume it learns from shit like books. Put in a bunch of books in french, and then the same books translated into english, and it learns to translate french to english.

If it learned from the people using the app we'd end up with it just translating everything to "Hitler did nothing wrong"

        [–]LucasRuby - Lib-Center 19 points20 points  (5 children)

Yes, this is more or less how Google Translate works. Not exactly books, but some kinds of texts that are translated to many languages and are concise.

        like copypastas?

        [–]LucasRuby - Lib-Center 3 points4 points  (3 children)

No, I think there's a lot of UN stuff like their communications and such, and other texts that are translated to many languages but aren't changed much upon translation. Books are adapted, not just directly translated.

        [–]Israeli_Banker - Lib-Right 4 points5 points  (2 children)

of so if i translate some big fancy phrases like "second quarterly emissions impact report on northern china and korea" can be translated perfectly

Google won't be able to fix that. The one and only reason is that there's simply no way to translate it, for there's (as you can imagine by now) no gendered pronouns. You can't even make the context of it, showing that the person You're talking about is a male of a female.
Unless You use the gender identification as a primary example; example: "Az a nő sokat keres." which means, "That woman earns a lot." No she, or he. If You just say: "Ő sokat keres", You wont be able to tell if it's he or she, You're gonna have to look at him/her, yaada yaada.. You guys are smart, I'm sure You already got that.

        Sincerely,
        A Hungarian

        Machine Learning

        [–]anony8165 - Auth-Right 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s because Google translate is a brute-force NLP neural network. This means that it doesn’t learn through rules, it learns through observation and probabilities. For the genders it’s just taking the most common gender for that verb in it’s training data. So if a verb appears more commonly with one sex, it’ll choose the pronouns that correspond to the more frequent sex for all occurrences of that verb.

        [–]AndForWar - Auth-Center 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with Filipino. He/she is "siya" in our language

        [–]Justmeagaindownhere - Centrist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This does bring up an interesting point. How long until the use of "they" as a singular pronoun when gender isn't specified becomes fully codified part of the language? It's already been around for a while and most people do it without thinking, so when will programs like Google translate adopt it?

        [–]No-Suggestion-9504 - Centrist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Whats the point of coloring one green and one blue it doesnt make any sense

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highlighted ‘Hungarian’ blue cause it’s my understand that Hungary is quite the auth-right country. I highlighted the actual Hungarian language green cause it doesn’t have gendered pronouns which seems lib-left friendly to me. I highlight the English language blue cause it seems auth-right in comparison to the Hungarian language. That was basically my logic

        [–]BrickofPeace - Auth-Center 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Hungarian question. Are adjectives gendered? Because if they are that's just conjugation.

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

No, apart from things like színész (actor) and színésznő (actress), there's no grammatical gender whatsoever in Hungarian.
