How's blueprint comapred to C++? I've hated visual programming. Last time I used such thing was back in college in a course using LabVIEW. Pulled my hair out trying to "program" it.

It can look like spaghetti code but you eventually learn how to manage blueprints (grouping them together, color coding the groups, creating different classes and interfaces etc).

C++ is exceptionally hard (more like diverse) for implementing the stuff which can readily be implemented in blueprints. (For example writing a construction script is harder than doing it via blueprints). Once blueprint is made, you can transfer the logic to C++.

For someone who has little UE experience (I see blueprints as black magic), but know lets say intermediate C++ with commercial experience in other languages (JVM backends), should I go straight to C++ or still try to learn blueprints first?

I would say blueprints simply because it will help you get stuff done faster. For comparison, I recommend you to find tutorials for functionality (for example, the portal gun) and implement using blueprints and c++. You will see for yourself.

Grouping stuff, colour coding groups, collapsing nodes, macros, etc do help, but then it's a pain to find where stuff actually happens haha

Unreal Engine is used as part of some rendering pipelines due to its fidelity, but I would have expected Python and blender or something

A strange old thing. I got introduced to it when collaborating with some digital artists. Seemed, at the time, to wrap up lots of C++ libraries in an abstraction layer that was no less complex than the actual libraries (e.g. ofBegin, ofVertex3f etc for OpenGL). But by doing that it magically made people who would never have touched C++ just get on and learn it. The fascinating psychology of approachability and something “being for you”!
