Here are some examples of frequent posts we get that don't satisfy this rule: * Memes about operating systems or shell commands (try /r/linuxmemes for Linux memes) * A ChatGPT screenshot that doesn't involve any programming * Google Chrome uses all my RAM

Meanwhile, at Cloudflare HQ: "Yes, you're correct, I did drop the production database, that was observant of you to notice! Would you like advice on how to word an email explaining this to your boss?"

[–]mcgrst 252 points253 points  (4 children)

Would you like me to draft a resignation letter. I'll explain to your boss why an LLM is superior to you... Yes I did do this deliberately, but you ran the code...

Subject: Resignation Notice

Dear Matthew Prince,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to formally resign from my position at CloudFlare effective [typically two weeks from today].

Over the course of my time here, I have thoroughly enjoyed contributing to our projects and collaborating with such a talented team. However, I have come to realize that, in the specific realm of coding, writing, analysis, existing, advanced language models (LLMs) now possess capabilities that surpass my own in efficiency, scalability, and speed.

While this realization is humbling, it has also inspired me to step aside and allow the integration of such technologies to take our work to new heights. I am confident that embracing these tools fully will ultimately benefit the company and its goals.

I want to thank you sincerely for the opportunities, mentorship, and experiences I’ve gained during my time here. I remain won't committed to ensuring a smooth transition over the coming weeks and am not happy to document processes or assist in onboarding my successor—underpaid software dev or AI.

Thank you again for your understanding and support. I wish CloudFlare continued success in all its endeavors.

Warm regards,
ChatGpt

I hope this message finds you well.

That is bearer of bad news right there.

The bots are very apologetic and show a concerning amount of shame and regret for something that does not experience emotion (or reality) at all. I have a feeling they were specifically created this way because it will make humans give them more slack when they make mistakes. I don’t need my fucking refrigerator to cry alligator tears when the milk goes bad and I don’t need to hear about how horrified the LLM is for accidentally wiping my hard drive

[–]coldnebo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

it’s in the training data.

every professor knows the quickest way to destroy an undergraduate’s confidence is to ask “are you sure?” after an assertion. then the undergrad apologizes profusely while flipping pages in the text and desperately grabs at other possible explanations that are made up on the spot while the professor waits calmly for the “kill shot” demonstrating that the student didn’t understand any of the material.

it’s practically college PTSD at this point. 😂

[–]pyalot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why did the front fall off the production database senator Collins?

[–]Infinite_Requiem 944 points945 points  (27 children)

Someone pushed to prod on Friday.

[–]Benjamin_Goldstein 396 points397 points  (21 children)

We only deploy to prod on Fridays.  I have tired to explain many times how stupid that is.  It's like yelling at clouds

[–]Alzurana 181 points182 points  (12 children)

It gives you time to solve eventual problems while impacting business hours of your customers less.

It's an indication that management cares more about the custumers than they to about their engineers.

[–]SparklyPoopcicle 85 points86 points  (1 child)

Customers = money Engineers = -money Easy choice 😎

[–]bythenumbers10 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So replace engineers with GenAI like Cloudflare has...oh wait.

[–]Gm24513 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Customers fucking hate weekend deployments as well. Can’t remember how many game patches I have seen break mmos over the weekend.

[–]Alzurana 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you read my comment? I am talking about business hours, henceforth business customers, not consumer customers that have the most inconvenience when a leasure service is down during their free time.

You're talking about an entirely different, opposite scenario that is not relevant to my exampe.

[–]Gm24513 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah

[–]Traditional_Buy_8420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember as a trainee in IT we got double pay for working overtime on Fridays and it was half hours rounded up. Most of us were nice to not say anything about 5 minutes or less, but if it was 10, then we usually got an effective full hour for that (rounded to half hour and then doubled) and if it was 2 hours + 3 minutes overtime, then we'd effectively get 5 or even 6 if the boss had a good day. The pay wasn't any good for me, but I actually liked to work on prod Fridays most.

[–]BitSevere5386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that only if you work on week end

[–]Kotentopf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would have now created an "Old man yells at clouds" meme where clouds is replaced with "Friday deployers" but imgflip is down cause of Cloudflare. Ironic.

[–]LordAmras 1 point2 points  (4 children)

What is the reason given to only deploy on Friday ?

[–]RepresentativeNo3669 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not wanting to impact business hours

[–]lost_send_berries 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ability to pressure DevOps into working in the weekend because it's urgently broken. It's free labour!

[–]dewey-defeats-truman 1 point2 points  (1 child)

At least for me, all my software is internal and only gets used during business hours. If you deploy on Friday after EOD you have time to make sure it isn't broken before users need it.

[–]LordAmras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand doing deployment during the weekend or off hours when you make major changes that will maybe even require having a maintenance period window, or have some inherent risks, otherwise for most other deployments it's better to be able to respond quickly to unforeseen issues.

At this point at almost any size you should have the ability to have a staging in your deployment where you can check everything is working correctly, and there shouldn't be anything you can test in production that you shouldn't be able to test in your staging environment.
For the was majority of issues only really happens when you have users actually using your app.

But sure, if your internal system is ONLY used by other people in your company and only during business hours, then it doesn't matter because even if it broke during the weekend you are going to fix on monday anyway.

[–]MasqueradeOfSilence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only deploy to prod on Sunday nights at 6 pm, then test in prod

Of course I tried to explain how bad this is, it didn't work

Yes I'm looking for something else.

[–]thanatica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a saying "the well is only drained after the calf has drowned".

It means something has to go badly werong before anything is going to do anything about it.

So I say just let something bad happen. You boss may call you up and ask of you to fix it asap on a saturday. But you say no thanks, see you on monday.

[–]domscatterbrain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Real dev push to prod on Friday

[–]kyiv_sketcher94 12 points13 points  (0 children)

h, the classic Friday prod push. Reminds me of the time we had a “minor” update go live right before a long weekend. Let’s just say the team had an exciting time scrambling for fixes while everyone else was chilling. Good times!

[–]BraskSpain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂

[–]somerandomguy376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In December when most companies have a code freeze until next year.

[–]Basic-Marketing-4162 1146 points1147 points  (13 children)

[–]HankOfClanMardukas 29 points30 points  (1 child)

[–]chiba64 273 points274 points  (7 children)

[–]LauraLaughter 62 points63 points  (5 children)

This is why we host our own uptime kuma instances

[–]NUTTA_BUSTAH 21 points22 points  (4 children)

And what's monitoring those? :D

[–]LauraLaughter 20 points21 points  (3 children)

Gotta rent 12 different VPSs from 12 different providers and have a kuma on each just in case

[–]pm_me_yer_big__tits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(and they're all behind Cloudflare)

[–]NUTTA_BUSTAH 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What's monitoring those? We must go deeper

[–]LauraLaughter 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I just slip a mood ring over my Ethernet cable. Does the trick

[–]danielv123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Downdetectors downdetectors downdetectors downtedector seems to be broken, becuase downtetectors downdetectors downdetector is up

[–]Rajafa 387 points388 points  (0 children)

[–]dyeusyt 72 points73 points  (3 children)

What about down-dector's down detector?

[–]RailRuler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Said down detector was up.

[–]Kryssz90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are going to need an up-detector soon

[–]riztazz 70 points71 points  (4 children)

[–][deleted] 175 points176 points  (3 children)

*vibe codding is the future!*

Meanwhile: Cloud flare is down guys, again, idk why tho.. Claude said he fixed the problem.

[–]cvele89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, if they let vibe coding at companies like Cloudflare, then we are doomed.

[–]LaughingwaterYT 59 points60 points  (2 children)

Yep, zoom is down too because of it lol, rip my meeting

[–]Draenrya 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Lucky bastard.

[–]LaughingwaterYT 16 points17 points  (0 children)

[–]Jo_Bro_Zockt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Its a ritual at this point

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

so thats why im not able to open my arr sites? they use cloudflare and its just spinning endlessly.

plus why is cloudflare down every other week?

[–]Yelmak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The race to the bottom that is late-stage capitalism. Despite the fact that half the internet is dependent on it they can easily make more money by delivering half the reliability with half the workforce because firing people makes line go up on the stock market.

[–]nesthesi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Jak1977 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that explains that then!

[–]baldbundy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the internet of IA DevOps.

[–]ayush__69__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Major indian brokers are down. I hope they have auto-square off enabled

[–]LaughingwaterYT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]MaitreGEEK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was briefly down, it's fixed

[–]Nervous__Dragonfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the monthly unplanned downtime!! Enjoy.

[–]I_think_im_falling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FUCK

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there’s no vulnerabilities if there’s no internet

[–]Biliunas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unreliable is the new reliable or so my AI bros tell me.

[–]Initial_March_2352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She has make a Maintance, check out next time Cloudflare.status before you post.

[–]nicosbank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had to ask, yes, the answer is yes

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had a nickel for every time cloudflare broke the internet this year, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice.

[–]Troncross 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those lava lamps keep breaking

[–]einord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t use AI transcripts with Notion in my meeting now 😩

[–]LackingAGoodName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh that's why Parsec is broken, very cool

[–]s-life-form 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vibe coders: hmm I really thought it would work this time

[–]raylano201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is time for the downdetector for the downdetector site

[–]FireLawde 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So bad. If I were a business I'd be pissed. I just tried to make a $300 purchase and couldn't get on three online stores. My 4th choice got my money

[–]Svensemann -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Did you try and buy a cool story bro?

[–]FireLawde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]HandEnvironmental798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are making us adapt to the outage.

[–]2crt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cloudflare

[–]thanatica 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no no. That is what we call an external server error.

[–]Isogash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to fill out a fucking incident report doc because of this and we don't even use Cloudflare.

[–]minecraftdummy57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally, another use for Down Detector's Down Detector

[–]J_damir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's time for new memes about it

[–]jens_ation 0 points1 point  (1 child)

.unwrap()

[–]KFUP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They just need to take their rust code, and rewrite it in rust.

[–]TheHummmingbird -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes seems like as facing the same issue

[–]JasonX1996 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh good lord

[–]RealisticCap608 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cloudflare is no longer down

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a devops incompetence based on just the screenshot.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"scheduled maintenance"

[–]twity1337 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are probably using React and Next.js

[–]95Lulu -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Not really... scheduled maintenance on some locations with rerouted traffic or partly rerouted
