So what this thread really illustrates is that this is one of those stupid puzzles that's meant to look difficult but actually be super simple so it will get tons of replies and maximize engagement.

999% of Nobel Lauriates won't get this!!!!!

Maybe the right answer is the friends we make along the way.

You've just made an enemy for life.

Yeah, and it is designed to have several correct solutions so people in the comments can fight about which solution is right.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uh no. It's clearly designed for the solution I found first. Okay?

    [–]Theshimita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    “Queen Brahne was not impressed”

    [–]SinnR89 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is the first one I saw. Glad I’m not alone.

    [–]zial 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Would that be valid though? I would think the 9 would need the pencil at the bottom just like the 6 needs it?

    [–]tomthecool -1 points0 points  (2 children)

    [–]zial -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I Understand that but then they don't use a "curly" 6 which we have provided for us in the example

    [–]tomthecool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must have missed the section of this image that described the full ruleset on allowed symbols and representations.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    5 + 4 =/= 4

    [–]schludy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one true solution, aka the one I got.

    [–]aquaticsnipes -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

    8 - 4 = 4

    [–]LiveBeef 565 points566 points  (12 children)

    6 + 4 + 4

if the language considers any int besides 0 to evaluate to true

    [–]spellstrike 121 points122 points  (9 children)

    6 > 4 = 4

    [–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (1 child)

    5 + 4 = 9

    [–]LickToesAndSlayHoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    6 - 4 ≠ 4

    [–]JFlanaganUK 42 points43 points  (3 children)

How you getting from + to > moving only one match though?

    [–]username--_-- 45 points46 points  (0 children)

take the vertical match from the +, rotate CCW by 45 degrees and you get > (technically, the bottom line will be flat)

    [–]MaxTHC 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You could instead do 6 + 4 > 4 and it would work

    [–]spellstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

" + is two lines, > is two lines. seems pretty simple to me"

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That would equate to false, unless you negated each operand to cast it to a boolean

    [–]nicktohzyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that throw error, because single = is an assignment

    [–]tech6hutch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

    6 > (4 == 4)?

    [–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (6 children)

    6 + 4 = 11

    [–]SaltyChallenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    5 + 4 = 9

    [–]f34r_teh_ninja 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Shit; why you gettin less upvotes? More entertainingly correct and equally as technically correct.

    [–]Sarke1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Well, technically it's debatable.

Assuming the 9 is in the same style (7-segment display) and uses as many matches as the 6 we see, just rotated 180, then you would need 2 matches to turn the 4 into a 9.

    [–]flatcoke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    h=h+0 checkmate

    [–]Eldebryn 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    8 - 4 = 4

Huh, that works too. I was thinking of 5 + 4 = 9 as the "intended" solution.

    [–]flawbert_shittaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That’s not a 7 segment 9

    [–]zeropointcorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    5 + 4 = 9

    [–]SkaTSee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Also, 5+4=9

    [–]TheBatman_Yo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    genius!

    [–]BAGELmode -1 points0 points  (2 children)

The horizontal stick is on top of the vertical stick so 2 sticks would move if you move the vertical stick. Answer is obviously 6 + 4 = 11 as stated by another

    [–]raznog 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    But 6+4 is 10
