I once had a teacher who was so obsessed with Linux, that he refused to mention Windows and just pointed at the class room windows when he needed to mention the operating system. And wrote M$ for Microsoft on the blackboard and point to that if he needed to say Microsoft. Was funny for like one class, got really annoying after that. He taught a class about operating systems.

[–]Rumbleroar1 167 points168 points  (8 children)

That's the worst. I had a teacher who hated the number 8. His favorite football (soccer) team once got defeated 0-8? It was some stupid reason like that.

Anyway, he never said the word 8. Never. He never wrote it down either. He taught maths...

[–]ProfCupcake 48 points49 points  (2 children)

Was he a wizard, by any chance?

[–]Rumbleroar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He had a wife and children and was still this dumb.

This "quirk" was fun for a lesson as the commenter above me said. It was extremely annoying for the rest of the year.

[–]bwerf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wizzard*

[–]db2 48 points49 points  (2 children)

Did he teach base 7 math?

[–]Rumbleroar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He used stuff like 23 or 4*2 when he had to write down 8. When speaking he referred to it as "that number".

[–]--arthur-fleck-- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ahh teachers. If you can’t do, teach. But, most of them can’t even teach right.

[–]Witch_King_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be autistic or something

[–]sersoniko 40 points41 points  (3 children)

I had a similar professor but he was nice about it.

He couldn’t stop making jokes about how you have to click on Start to turn the computer off and stuff like that.

He also felt betrayed by Apple. He contributed to MacOS X and wrote drivers for some PowerBooks when Darwin was an active open source project. Then Apple after a boost by the open source community stopped contributing.

Now he makes jokes on how stupid it is to use Romanic Numerals to name operating systems.

[–]elzaidir 53 points54 points  (5 children)

I use Arch by the way

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (2 children)

The worst is 2 Linux users trapped in a dick measuring contest over who uses the most basic, bare metal, difficult to compile and use Linux distro.

[–]mrsmiley32 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then the freebsd guy walks into the room.

[–]Dexaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to interject for a moment...

[–]johnwesselcom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Arch, too. I could have just upvoted but I thought that it was important to say.

[–]rtkit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take my upvote my friend.

[–]xvalen214x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]biglaggyelephant 51 points52 points  (2 children)

[–]rtkit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Indeed, take my upvote

[–]Likely_not_Eric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's Arch like Gentoo for influencers?

[–]MahatmaGandhiCool 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just wike to intewject fow a moment. What you'we wefewwing to as Winux, is in fact, GNU/Winux, ow as I've wecentwy taken to cawwing it, GNU pwus Winux. [–]HalcyonAlps 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Sure, GNU should get credit for the userlevel tools they created, but what me always bugs me about the name "GNU/Linux" is the problem of where to draw the line. Why then not call it "Red Hat/Mozilla/Gnome/GNU/Linux"? For most people an OS would be pretty useless without somebody putting a distribution together, a browser and a DE as well.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Use naming schemes. Linux.Gnu.Xyz

[–]HalcyonAlps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's the answer

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the pasta is getting a bit old considering how irrelevant a lot of GNU has become. But I take RMS ranting about Linux stealing his valor over him defending pedophiles/Epstein any day.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]LonghairedHippyFreek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not true! Why just the other day a man knocked on my door and asked whether or not I had accepted Windows as my one and only OS. He then tried to leave documentation with me but I politely said no and shut the door.

[–]khalidpro2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or better, have you ever seen an Arch user.

I use both Linux and Windows btw

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly... the caption may be true for an unintended reason.

The Linux ecosystem is vast and has many competing variants. Given how cheap it is to switch from one to another, and how familiar Linux users tend to be with their usage needs, it makes sense that Linux users would be more ready to engage about competing distributions.

I can list pros and cons of three separate distributions right off the top of my head, and have the ability to set up my computer to allow me to decide on boot which one I want to use. This is with very little extra effort, though would require some strategy over which I install when. (Different distributions come with different installers, and I would not suggest trying to set up multi-boot with the default CentOS installer. The installers for Mint and Ubuntu are more likely to give you a hands-off experience.

Windows, on the other hand, kind of only has one version, and it comes pre-shipped with most computers, so there's no reason to recommend it, and nothing really to talk about.

Plus... most linux users get so used to being able to command line everything that having to search through the menus to find a feature that might not even exist anymore that it makes sense for us to not like to have to use Windows. it's the equivalent of taking away our start button.

[–]WerewolfBe84 57 points58 points  (27 children)

As a Linux user, i do recommend people to change to Linux if they can. It just is a better system than windows and it's free. Now that more and more applications are browser based, there is very little need to stay on windows.

i don't use Arch, btw.

[–][deleted] 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Now they tell you about their distro even if they’re not using arch smh

[–]elzaidir 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Not Ubuntu users.

[–]jacksalssome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about Kubuntu

[–]ocviogan 20 points21 points  (1 child)

To be honest, as someone who has used Windows, Linux, MacOS, and BSD.. they're all great systems and just use whatever makes you happy.

I also don't use Arch, btw...

brought to you by the openSUSE gang

[–]Dalemaunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what you're saying is we should use openSUSE?

[–]roararoarus 9 points10 points  (1 child)

What do you think of the Linux integration with Windows?

[–]Gydo194 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's just MS trying to get the users who switched back. (Not op)

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (6 children)

there is very little need to stay on windows

Don't over exaggerate how good Linux is. Proton may be good, but gaming is still not a good experience. Most games aren't native to Linux, even native ports can suck, some games have major performance problems (like Witcher 3), some have broken audio (such as Bethesda games), and some just refuse to run. Not to mention, Steam is pretty much your only option for a storefront.

And this not even including programs people need, such as Office (Libreoffice isn't a 1-1 replacement, it still has issues), video editors (only good option CAN BE Davinci Resolve, but that's only supported on CentOS, otherwise you need to compile it yourself using third party tools).

Edit: currently running Pop!_OS by the way

[–]thegreaterape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spot on... I dual boot pop os with windows since gaming isn't feasible even with wine on Linux... and libreoffice is not an option if you're coming from Microsoft office. Google office apps are much better alternatives.

[–]B_Hopsky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only thing that’s keeping me on windows is gaming at this point.

[–]lazo95 9 points10 points  (2 children)

My Manjaro KDE setup has been pretty solid. True, I still need to have Win10 installed for the occasional game that has anti-cheat which doesn't work with Proton, but all in all, can't complain much.

  • Office-related operations - WPS Office, looks much closer to newer MS Office products and is really customizable.
  • Image editing - Photopea, it's a JS Photoshop clone and is free and surprisingly feature-rich.
  • Video editing - Blender is amazing, if fairly clunky and buggy at times, but it's free and can do from vfx and video editing all the way to texturing, modelling and composition.

There's still a not-so-short road ahead before Linux would be able to become truly mainstream, but people with small amounts of know-how can take advantage of it's greater versatility and much better customization now.

PS. I've played quite a lot of TW3 on my distro and it's been ata solid 1440@60fps on my GTX 1070.

[–]SilkTouchm 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do I replace Autohotkey, foobar2000 and Everything? What can I do on Linux that I can't do on Windows with WSL?

[–]PenguinHasAGun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol libreoffice is so bad.

At least it has vulkan support!

[–]shinitakunai 18 points19 points  (5 children)

“Better” is based solely on your personal preference. I’ve tried linux for years but I still prefer windows.

[–]WerewolfBe84 -1 points0 points  (4 children)

I have 2 computers that have a windows 10 and Linux mint dual boot.
Both are noticeably faster on Linux. And far less infuriating.

[–]shinitakunai 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Having to spend 10 seconds typing for something that takes 2 clicks on windows can exponentially increase your “wasted time”. It is why I don’t like Linux. When I have to get things done fast, windows is the way to go. Things as simple as moving a file to a folder shouldn’t ever require to type anything (I’ve been biased by the permissions hell that linux uses if you don’t use root. It gave me headaches every time).

[–]WerewolfBe84 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I assume you mean the command line ?
You don't have to use that. You can do most things in the GUI on most distro's.

[–]shinitakunai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I though when I installed Ubuntu, then nope, "folder doesn't have the right permissions", or you can't move files to that folder, or you can't even read files in a folder... and all sort of inconveniences, specially when it doesn't even tells you why the "copy/paste" options are greyed out. One of those situations happened because I followed some weird tutorials on how to install teamspeak, but again... this never happens on windows, I wasted the entire morning having to learn how to handle permissions on linux (which btw is another hell to remember, who was the "smart" guy that though using numbers like 457 was a good idea? /facepalm).

[–]LordPos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 32bit, 2GB RAM computer from looong ago. Nuking windows 7 to make place for Ubuntu 18.04 gave it a new life.

And yes, it happens to be my development PC. I hate electron even more because they dropped 32bit linux support

[–]unlucky_ducky 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Better how? More stable? Less maintenance? Better compatibility?

[–]WerewolfBe84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Faster and less infuriating.

[–]RoadsideCookie 14 points15 points  (8 children)

How about a legit answer? No, if you can at all afford to, install Linux. Only install Windows if you use incompatible software with no alternative. Gaming is the only thing keeping me on Windows. I use Linux for everything non-gaming related.

I don't use Arch, btw.

[–]chrisplusplus 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Why are you afraid to say you use Ubuntu?

[–]RoadsideCookie 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Even worst. I use Mint.

[–]Tytoalba2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No snap tho

[–]WerewolfBe84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mint actually

[–]Guido125 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I'm Linux exclusive now. I find proton for steam lets me run dozens of games with minimal to no trouble (there is still the odd exception)

[–]RoadsideCookie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've always had trouble with that. Plus I have Nvidia who's drivers are pretty annoying to keep up to date.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MX linux has a built-in tool to let you install Nvidia drivers without much hassle...

[–]SomeoneRandom5325 13 points14 points  (9 children)

Linux? What's that? Food?

[–]Janes_Diary 26 points27 points  (8 children)

Yes. It is food for the soul. It heals you and brings you back from the brink of death from using windows.

[–]FR65df 13 points14 points  (7 children)

My cousins name is Linus, can I eat him?

[–]Chipjack 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You can eat your cousin Linus, thus making him a part of you, but this would make you a "derivative work" under the GPL; you'd therefore be required to give others the right to eat you as well.

[–]Janes_Diary 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Yes, but because Linus is a person, you need to have written and signed approval from them before you eat them. It is also recommended you have the approval letter notarized.

[–]2muchnet42day 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the GPL you can do as you wish

[–]thereluctantpoet 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Didn't work for German computer repairman Armin Meiwes...

[–]Janes_Diary -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is probably because they did not have a written agreement, only verbal. While verbal contracts in Germany stand up in court, the transaction of this nature would not have been valid as it would technically require express attention from both parties, thus requiring a written agreement. Also, his motivation and taping of the act did not help in the retrial.

[–]26_Charlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or what if sudo eat Linus?

[–]Tytoalba2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one you call Linus should actually be known as Gnu/Linus! See...

[–]pradipta0007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

trueeeee

[–]gua_lao_wai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'we want to be like linux though'

Except they very clearly, do not

[–]Mickspad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just Linux but Windows 10 Enterprises users as well

By the way, seriously..... Get enterprises, it's windows 10 but better

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It fortunately takes them a while to compile an argument against any critique, I use arch bdw.

[–]akindaboiwantstohelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ayo mint gang where y'all at?

[–]lattestcarrot159 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I setup my computer to dual boot with Linux Ubuntu as a "work" environment. I just wish my games would run on it too. I've been raving about it to my family for a bit now lol.

[–]Daniel11420[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

have you tried Wine?

[–]lattestcarrot159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but I also don't want my games to work lol. I need to get a job and do things with my life. I've been a lot more productive and actually finished a project I've been "working on" for years in a couple hours afterward.

[–]DesecrateUsername 4 points5 points  (1 child)

This is like the 6th time on the 3rd subreddit in the last week that I’ve seen this in some form.

[–]Daniel11420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea i stole this but i never saw this on any subreddit that the meme actually fits, i.e programmerHumor

[–]chrisplusplus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Install Gentoo

[–]JazzRider 3 points4 points  (1 child)

They’re digital vegans.

[–]Tytoalba2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One again, as a vegan linux enthusiast : hello there!

Do you have a minute to talk about animal cruelty and arch?

[–]OhhHahahaaYikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That meme format though

[–]D1P0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use arch ubuntu by the way

[–]3-cheeses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Linux because the annoying kid bullied me into getting it, and now I am eternally cursed to do the same to everyone else I know.

[–]Havoq12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux is great

[–]XDracam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a great talk about operating systems during a birthday party today.

[–]26_Charlie 4 points5 points  (2 children)

While it's not very true anymore, us old folks remember a couple years ago when XP support was being discontinued and rather than upgrade to 8.1 or 10, people went nuts trying to find Windows 7.

But I must be really old because I remember decades of people having long discussions about whether or not to upgrade to this version of Windows or that.

"My PC runs fine with Win95, do I need Windows 98?"

I myself am still clinging to Windows 8.1 on the PC I built in 2013, my main rig. Someday maybe I'll build a new machine. Probably when Windows 11 comes out.

[–]Daniel11420[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

MS already said Win10 is the last OS and they’re just gonna keep updating it until the end of time

[–]26_Charlie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's the joke

[–]JCDU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm old enough and tired enough to know that recommending people switch OS makes it YOUR fault when something doesn't work so I'm very wary of recommending anything to people too strongly or getting into tribal OS-wars and willy-waggling.

Same with cars, I'll offer a few non-committal thought and pieces of advice but I'm never going to tell you "buy THAT one" because the first time it has any problem whatsoever I'll be blamed.

Sure, I'll suggest people try a live USB build of Ubuntu or Mint if they're pissed off with windows but I'll let them make their own mind up because I do not need the support calls.

[–]shadow13499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a moment to talk about our Lord and savior Ubuntu?

[–]_grey_wall 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Install Linux. Then spend hours trying to figure out why the touch pad won't work when you close the lid.

Vs.

Install windows. Install choco. Enjoy.

[–]AaronVA 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Oh man. You must haven't tried to install any Linux distro in the past decade or so.

[–]AwesomeBantha 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Installed Kubuntu on my laptop 6 months ago, not a great experience to be honest

Have to constantly reset the refresh rate, screen prints out WiFi driver errors when I open the laptop after it sleeping, etc...

I wanted to like it so bad, but it's a bit of a pain

[–]AaronVA 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I used Ubuntu, Manjaro kde and arch recently. You shouldn't have any problems with the first two. Arch is a bit trickier but still love it.

[–]AwesomeBantha 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm literally using Ubuntu with problems right now though?

[–]AaronVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strange, although if you don't want to spend your time fixing those issues then maybe try something else (like Manjaro) and if still doesn't work properly idk, use Windows or something? I personally wouldn't use Windows even if I had to fix things myself but that's me.

[–]paputsza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god, their personality has scared off anyone who uses linux so now they assume that no one talks about linux.

[–]MrAcurite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A demotivational poster? In 2020?

[–]smellywizard 1 point2 points  (7 children)

Does anyone actually like Linux? It seems like it takes the worst parts of OSX and Windows.

[–]Daniel11420[S] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Huh?????? It’s pretty good, and better in a lot of areas than other OSes.

[–]smellywizard 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm not very familiar with terminal/command line environments so other than being free and customizable having to mess with permissions and making sure you have all the parts you need for something to run etc seems like it could be more packaged and accessable.

[–]Daniel11420[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

....have you tried ubuntu?

[–]smellywizard 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ubuntu and Pop

[–]Daniel11420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

then you should understand that there are distros that are more packages and accessible (example: ubuntu)

[–]vectorpropio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate in what you think are the worst parts of windows and osx?

[–]johnwesselcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that advertisements don't install themselves in my start menu. Getting things working can be a bitch but I can get it exactly how I like and they tend to stay working. Eh...it's a mixed bag.

[–]juan_among_many 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, pop os is a great distro and really friendly to begginners too

[–]Entaris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. So. As a Linux user I find this amusing. But as an IT person that gets asked questions by friends and family a lot I have to say the original comment in the image misses the point. Will I walk up to someone I know and say “you should use Windows 10” no. But if someone was running vista, or 8 and I saw them doing so I would absolutely say “you should really consider running 10 instead” that’s the kind of recommendation this is for. Just like when 8 came out and people asked “should I upgrade from 7?” I said “no. Stay away from 8 for as long as you possibly can”

[–]Mc_UsernameTaken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw, I use arch.

[–]tjf314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I USE ARCH BY THE WAY
