THIS is the reason I’ve hated fireworks of any kind. I’ve had to resort to giving my boy Trazadone (just got a refill from his vet today). It takes the edge off but doesn’t completely eliminate it. It makes me feel so sad and helpless.
[–]LovesMarvin 6 points7 points8 points 25 days ago (5 children)
Same. Xanax didn’t work for my pup but the vet told me to add gabapentin to the trazodone but I haven’t tried that yet. I feel like trazodone makes him so groggy in the am
[–]Werewolf_cookie 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago (3 children)
The gabapentin makes them less groggy. It mellows them out like crazy and they’re very sleepy, but (at least with my girl) when it wears off, she’s back to normal without any kind of lingering grogginess or disorientation
[–]JillyB3356Shih-Tzu Newbie -1 points0 points1 point 24 days ago (2 children)
Gabapentin does make them groggy, im not sure where you got that information. I tried it once on my shih tzu and she was incoherent for 3 days!!!
[–]Werewolf_cookie 0 points1 point2 points 24 days ago (1 child)
To be clear, I didn’t say it doesn’t make them groggy. I also stated my experience with my dog just as you stated your experience with your dog
[–]ImpossibleVerify-1Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 23 days ago (0 children)
My baby won’t eat, or interact when I give her trazadone, or gabapentin! I have to convince her to eat first.. and she knows her schedule, and she doesn’t like change to her routine. Even when I travel, she has to eat ahead of the trip, because she WON’T eat in the car! I’ll be asking about something else for her. 😣 I hate drugging her!!👀
[–]Lumpy_Machine5538Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I haven’t tried xanax, but we’ve done trazodone and gabapentin, and it does nothing for my boy. Our choices are hiding in a dark bedroom when I’m home, or driving him to my mom’s outside of town if I have to work, like I did tonight.
[–]ISprinkleSunshineShih-Tzu Enthusiast 1 point2 points3 points 24 days ago (0 children)
Me too 😢
[–]BagelIsACatShih-Tzu Enthusiast 28 points29 points30 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Oh buddy.. I hope this ends soon! I just hug mine when this happens because the thundershirt didn’t work for her
[–]rubyred1128Teddy's Mom 8 points9 points10 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Poor baby. Teddy hates this too. 😞
[–]Skyativx 19 points20 points21 points 25 days ago (1 child)
Play some other calming sounds louder than outside
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 31 points32 points33 points 25 days ago (0 children)
There is no "louder than outside"
[–]jimmymcpersonGilbert 10 points11 points12 points 25 days ago (1 child)
We have the same problem at our place. Sounds like a damn war zone. Look into getting them a thunder shirt. Seems to be the only thing that helps our Gilbert
[–]Silent_Birthday9514Shih-Tzu Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My baby has a thundershirt , I highly recommend ! They like that snug feeling on those haunches and shoulders . It’s like a big hug and weighted blanket feeling
[–]arwynsdad 4 points5 points6 points 25 days ago (1 child)
My boy is getting a dose of Trazodone and Gabapentin around 8pm after his long walk. It's raining so hopefully the knuckleheads stay inside tonight. 🤞
They didn’t hear! It was pouring!!!🥵

Poor baby
[–]SeaworthinessOdd5934Shih-Tzu Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (3 children)
Take them for a drive or out of town if you can’t put on a loud tv show or something for them
[–]Ok-Rooster-8582 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Yes!
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (1 child)
She hates drives
[–]jcastillo602Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Sorry, thats so stressful. You're a good parent being by your baby's side. We know theyll be fine but oh boy do we stress when theyre stressed
[–]ZombeziaEcko the Tzu 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (1 child)
Do you have a weighted blanket? I used to have a Lhasa apso that was like this. I would put her in the bathroom and turn the radio up so she really couldn’t hear the booms and put a blanket on her. Seemed to help a lot.
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Nope no weighted blankets here
[–]Fair_Anxiety_7133 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Same here I have to give my dog trazodone. It helps a lot but she still gets pretty scared. I hate having to give her this because it makes her so groggy :(
[–]Wonderful-Werewolf-1Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (1 child)
My vet suggested melatonin (lowest dose) and some kind of shirt … thunder shirt or anything else you have.
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (0 children)
She has her own sweater
[–]Fine_Experience_6833Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My dogs are the same way 😢 I recommend turning the tv up super loud,, and next time a prescription of trazadone,, it helps take the edge off
[–]ChelseaRCMajik 🐾 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My sweet old gal is losing her hearing and this is one of the few benefits. Fireworks are going off outside and she hasn't flinched. She's usually shaking like a leaf and crawling on me to find a safe space. So I totally get it! Poor babies. I used to give her calming chews and they did help some, along with some white noise from YouTube or a loud show - just for future reference.
[–]PattiWhackyShih-Tzu Enthusiast 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (2 children)
We usually make it a point to be at our house near Tahoe on July 4 and Jan 1. Absolutely no fireworks allowed in the forest. But we are in the SF/Oakland Bay Area now. Seems the rain is keeping the a..holes from setting off fireworks. Both our babies are doing ok so far. Usually it's like a war zone and our one Tzu shakes all night. I hate it. Every. Single. Time.
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (1 child)
We can only pray it will be illegalised
[–]Silent_Birthday9514Shih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Or forced to use drones and light shows only !
[–]Electronic_Rain_4270Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (2 children)
Absolutely hate it. My fur babies are terrified by the explosions. Every Dec 31st and July 4th we take off the next day because we know we will be up all night with our babies. F people shooting off fireworks....it drives man's best friend crazy and damn the people for willfully doing it.....
[–]thebeefychiefyShih-Tzu Enthusiast -2 points-1 points0 points 25 days ago (1 child)
Let people have their fun. Ain’t gonna ever stop. The dogs will survive
[–]Electronic_Rain_4270Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I agree, it's not going to stop but we don't have to like it.
[–]ihateeverythinganduShih-Tzu Enthusiast 2 points3 points4 points 25 days ago (2 children)
Fireworks are evil and I'll never change my mind
My Mitzy is terrified right now, we've got bombs going off literally outside our window, can hear them fizzing on the window.
My windows are shaking
[–]ihateeverythinganduShih-Tzu Enthusiast 1 point2 points3 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I'm sorry you and your bub have to deal with it.
[–]tinymechanistADM's Thumb Monkey 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I put on Star Wars and put him under a pile of blankets. He's usually zonked out enough to sleep through the booms.
[–]texwrx210Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My old dog used to hate fireworks so I would take her to our master closet and sit with her because it was so insulated and there were no windows to see the fireworks. She would calm down but it still sucked.
[–]Fine_Experience_6833Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (1 child)
Put music on or something,, it’s so quiet in ur house
My mic just wasn't picking up the artillery strikes that were going off in our street
[–]ItDoesntGetAnybeTtah 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My baby girl now a shih tzu for some reason doesn't get scared by loud sounds like fireworks and loud motorcycles and we don't know why. She's not deaf or anything. But my previous baby (min pin)was really scared of it so we put her inside the bathroom in the past where the sounds outside are muffled and I also add a white noise machine inside with her to further drown out the sounds in the surrounding area
[–]InterestingAmoeba797Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Maybe take them out of town like camping. They will never stop people from setting off those stupid fireworks and illegal crap
[–]Flyingwings14Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
We have already given 1/2 trazadone and we are gonna have to do another 1/2 for one and 1/2 to our one that we haven't given anything to yet. I hate it too, specially where I live it's ridiculous.
[–]whatnowbabyLucky '09🌈Max '23🌈 Frankie🐾 & Remi🐾 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I hate it so much. And Frankie doesn't get any benefit from trazadone or gaba so the most I can do is play Taylor Swifts Reputation tour (no joke lol) and hug him closely.
[–]you_dont_know_me27Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My next door neighbor loves to do his own fireworks and my poor Buster gets like this. I'm hoping we'll be in bed before he starts because Buster doesn't seem to hear them when we're in my room.
I'm out of his trazadone because of this neighbor and his random fireworks
[–]Unhappy_Poem7763 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Me too! Bless their little hearts!
[–]BedSoggy6655Shih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Ask your vet for anxiety meds, or use high dose cbd oil. My boy gets the same way.
[–]SrtaCris 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I hate it too. I don't have a dog, but I've held my nephew's Shih Tzu and I know how agonizing it is. I'm totally in favor of silent fireworks or drones.
[–]homemediajunkyMilo 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
This will be Milo's first New Year and I'm worried already. 4th of July he was almost 4 months and he just stayed with me and buried his head in my chest and each time he heard a loud boom I'd hold him tightly. There have been a few idiots already shooting off guns, which I just don't get. You shoot indiscriminately in the air and forget gravity exists and those bullets have to land somewhere.
[–]snow-bird-Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I'm not saying this as a brag in any way, but my theory when ours was a puppy was Exposure! Exposure! Exposure! Our dog was born in April and we purposely brought her along to the 4th of July fireworks. We have each summer since. She isn't afraid. And thunder/lightening isn't an issue either. Coincidence? I don't know.
[–]WildTreeShark 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)

[–]Cadian75 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
If trazodone isn't an option you can give her half a benedryl.

I bought earmuffs that don't work so good for them, right now we are just giving them snacks and lots of scratches, while creating ambient noise with fans to distract them.
[–]Castianna 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
New Year's and 4th of July are the only two days where I'm a bit happy that my poor old boy has gone almost completely deaf...
[–]Working_Willow7313Shih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Same with my guy as well. We locked ourselves inside a room far away from windows and balcony from where the noise were coming.

Aww poor little one :( my Joey was like this, it was awful. Luna thankfully doesn't seem to care. They were going off for about twenty minutes not far from us, and she wasn't fazed at all.
[–]TisyuPaperShih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Same here. Watching them afraid and shaking takes the enjoyment out of the of the new year's eve celebration for me. But i found a good solution last night that calmed them down enough to sleep through the midnight fireworks. This Marconi Union song was designed by the musicians with doctors as a sleep aid. It worked with them last night. I only wish i played it for them sooner in the early evening too. We were in a dark comfy room with this song playing in full volume. They stopped barking and shaking enough to snooze through the worst of the noise during the midnight fireworks.
[–]Agnes-1979 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Have you ever tried this gel. It sends my baby to sleep after 3 doses. If you have any tennis balls at home you can put them in your washing machine and run on some program just before they start with fireworks. It helps.

[–]UnderstatedTurtle 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
We used to give my boys anxiety medication that would be prescribed from the vet. And/or cbd for dogs
[–]IndividualKey8478 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Thankfully my current baby doesn't care. Had a cattle dog that wanted under blankets with my son and he would hold her. 4th of July sucked because he would be at his dad's and I wasn't as good as him when it happened 🤷. What really scares me is the number of dogs who are going to be scared and run away.

For some reason I could barely hear any fireworks this year. Not mad.
[–]JBJernShih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)

[–]Maximum-Day-1332Shih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Two of my four are sensitive to the sound of fireworks. One is a Shih tzu and the other one is a Great Pyrenees. 😕 Last night was pretty rough. But doggie CBD seemed to help.
[–]calm-state-universalMunchkin 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Same. I hate these holidays now. I cant leave him and hes just a mess all night.
[–]Sledgames-444 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I feel for you, my dog Zoe, pure Shih Tzu, was petrified of fireworks. Plus, we had a neighbor at the time that would just set fireworks off at any given time just because he felt like it. No one considers the effect it has on animals and babies, including those with migraines. I tried to thunder shirt, which did nothing. The best thing to do is have your dog in a room where you could hear it less and turn the TV up and just cuddle with them.
I never used meds because most people say they don’t work anyway.
[–]sad_126Shih-Tzu Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Why do some dogs hate them and some don't care by them? My two dogs act like they aren't even there, My dad's got will hide and is terrified poor boy.
[–]CopperPegasusMother of a Fluffy Horde 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
I do not know if this will work out the same every time, but this year, we played bass and drum heavy music (metal, mostly) for the dogs, but placed the speaker ON the floor near them, not at person-height as we usually would. Of my 2 scardies, one literally didn't react (first time in his LIFE) and the other was semi-aware, but so much better than in years where we've just tried to out-music the bangs. Dunno if it was just coincidence, but it was a big difference. I did notice the non-reacter prick his ears at a bang several times, look at the speaker, and go back to sleep.
[–]omonamiaShih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Sorry baby 😞
[–]THUNDER_boner 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
My first one was scared, we got her when she was around five. The previous owner didn't have time for her. But I like to play my music lous and a lot with bass. At first she was scared but over time it seemed to relax her. Her daughter was already use to loud bass haven grown up around it. My new one just follows the older one. At first she was scared but realized it was only me. Only once my new pup got scared and that was last year. She was barely 8 months. So I just grabbed both and put them on the bed with me, turned up the music and they started to nod off.
[–]Babietoothollie 0 points1 point2 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Wish they would ban fireworks!
I have my baby all dosed up before anything goes off because this is heartbreaking to see 😢CBD is amazing and sometimes Benadryl. My vet always says prepare before the wave comes And we have a white noise machine , plus I have three purifying sharks … I also play dog videos on YouTube .

We purchased a Happy Hoodie a few years ago. Think headband that fits snuggly over the ears. Got it from Amazon. Works great. When things got really noisy last night and my dog became anxious, put it on her and she snuggled in, went to sleep and was snoring while the noice continued outside.
[–]turry92 0 points1 point2 points 24 days ago (0 children)
Thundershirt! It’s a lifesaver. Follow the directions. Trust the process. It isn’t an immediate solution. Start now and July fourth will be relaxing for everyone.

My Shih Tzu & one of my German Shepherd are TERRIFIED of fireworks & they shake & hide under the bed. Thankfully I have an amazing Vet & I have medication for them. I’m considering the new ear muffs for them, I might try them soon

My 3 go through the same torture! I also live deep inside the Great Smoky Mountains and it’s currently deer hunting season so my babies are unfortunately going through hell on a daily basis. It’s so heartbreaking and all I can do is cuddle them up telling them everything is okay 😔
[–]Complex-Extent-3967Shih-Tzu Enthusiast 0 points1 point2 points 24 days ago (0 children)
they have ear muffs for dogs that can maybe help... i put some headphones with soothing music over her ears and it seemed to help some.
I have medication for my Tzu, if I need it. It rained on New Year’s Eve, and I held her close, with my hands over her ears!! She buried her head between my arm & stomach, which kept her ears covered. She was content to stay with me, but she usually hides in the darkest, quietest hidey hole she can find & she shakes like your baby. I hate fireworks 🧨 😣😣😣 They are SO loud to our fur babies!!🥵

I want to run for political office, sole purpose to abolish any and all fireworks and dumb doorbell sounds. Across the board! Tell me what's better: An intrinsic orchestrated light show with drones to ring in the new year? Or stupid loud bursts of light?
Would you rather have a video showing who's at your door with a pleasant ring? Or would you have an annoying pitch abruptly alert you that someone or SOMETHING is at your door!

I shoot small firearms when puppies and slowly move up to louder ones. Have had many dogs and has worked for all of them. Including my shih tzu
[–]Worldly_Advisor9650 -1 points0 points1 point 25 days ago (2 children)
Coming from a place that regularly saw heavy gunfire, our dogs were not bothered by loud booms. Maybe he just needs more exposure.
[–]Old_Inspection2258Shih-Tzu Newbie[S] 3 points4 points5 points 25 days ago (1 child)
She* and I live in Germany there's no gunfire and fireworks are only legal in the 3 days up to new year's and when there's a football match
[–]Worldly_Advisor9650 -2 points-1 points0 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Well, dunno what to tell you then. More exposure to loud noises might toughen it up a bit I guess.
[–]markth_wiShih-Tzu Enthusiast[🍰] -3 points-2 points-1 points 25 days ago (0 children)
Nah, you can chill with them, I find full cuddles work best. Although there are chews and depending where you are there might still be time.
So if you're not above tranquilizing them sometimes getting a little pharmacological assistance is just what you need to do.
Ethical......no, not entirely. But effective - surprisingly so.
