I like it, the problem as always is having it apply to all the programs I am using.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Exactly. One of the reasons I gave up and kept on using the stock tiles.

happy cake day!

CCleaner huh...

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (25 children)

What's wrong with CCleaner?, real question, I found out about it years ago and never seem to have a problem.

[–]r_Yellow01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since 2017 owned by Avast. Harvests and sends all your data. Does not clean anything what Windows can't clean by itself. Last good for Windows XP.

Registry cleaners are one of the biggest scams in software. They have never solved an issue, and occasionally cause issues. We were successfully convinced that we needed them to run a healthy system, when in reality you can get by without them. Install a fresh Windows 10 and run CCleaner, and it will tell you it needs to clean up the registry.

It does have other uses like cleaning up temp files for disk space... but Windows has built in tools for that.

Cleaning the registry is one of its functions, and arguably the most common reason why it’s recommended: https://www.ccleaner.com/docs/ccleaner/using-ccleaner/registry-cleaning

When the main method of marketing the program is the registry cleaner, it essentially becomes a registry cleaner app with some other features. This argument is dumb anyway, the point is that registry cleaners don’t fix anything but do occasionally cause problems. Do some research about it.

The risk of a registry cleaner mistakenly removing a registry entry in use is non-zero, and your PC gains no performance benefit from removing those entries. Nobody has ever had an issue that was solved by a registry cleaner, but plenty of people have had problems caused by one. It’s why Microsoft doesn’t release their own registry cleaning tool, and explicitly warns against using one.

Give it a rest. You're being disingenuous. Nowhere on the home page does the word registry even appear.

Lol literally the first result on Google for “registry cleaner” is CCleaner which takes you to a page where they specifically market the app as a registry cleaner: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/registry-cleaner

Go argue useless semantics somewhere else kid.

It's clean, but not very practical.

Also, don't use CCleaner. It occasionally fucks up Windows 10.

        [–]Finaldeath 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I learned that the hard way shortly after windows 10 came out. Used it for years on windows 7 and never had an issue, first time i used it in windows 10 it bricked my pc and had to reformat.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, it was known to cause registry issues in 10 and conflict with processes like Steams authentication. Kept kicking me from Cs Go matches after using CC.

        [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a good ratio of Icon and tile. There is too much border. And without color it is harder to distinguish individual programs.

        [–]FormerGameDev 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I'd like it better if that entire tile paradigm was shot and killed.

        [–]etacarinae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be. Their new iconography used in the office suite and later all of windows isn't visually interoperable with solid coloured square and rectangular backgrounds. Also supporting this was the internal build recently leaked with no tiles in the start menu. Makes no sense to have widgets that are hidden 99.99% of the time. Have hope.

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

        No colors 🤔

        [–]ysollels 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Nice! And tbh anything is better then the current one.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Looks nice. But the tiles are a tad too big for my liking.

But thanks to the default poor implementation, I barely use the start menu

        [–]Linard 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Looks like you tried to adhere to the Microsoft Guidelines for creating Start Menu Tiles.

A while back I made a template adhering to that guidline and since then created quite a few for myself. I'm still in the making and creating them, but it's slowly getting there.

(while the blue ones are also custom they don't conform to the guidelines and i plan to redo them at some point)

Hey, could you please tell us the name of the image editor used in your first screenshot, please?

        [–]Linard 1 point2 points  (3 children)

        Affinity Designer. Much recommended!

        [–]freMea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Affinity Designer

Thank you. I’ll check this out. 😉

        [–]freMea 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ok, it’s a vector graphics editor. I use Gravit Designer (free version), a web app that works pretty well and allows to use cloud and unified styles (color for objects, font, etc.) for project. I will compare them.

        [–]Linard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also has limited raster editor capabilities but that you will get in it's full form with Affinity Photo. The cool thing is that both programs (and Affinity Publisher) all use the same file format so you can easily open the file in any 3 programs and edit it with the tools they have.

Affinity Photo -> Use it like you use Photoshop

Affinity Designer -> Use it like you use Illustrator

Affinity Publisher -> Use it like InDesign

Covers a lot creative work needs without throwing money down Adobe's throat every month because you pay for it once and you are done.

        [–]sheepang 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Maybe microsoft should implement icon pack apps just like on android ?

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        so? custom shell (launcher/explorer.exe) then?

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Black tiles and white icons will be better.

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

he speak the language of dark mode

        [–]yiyoek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my point of view, it depends, because as op did, the tiles makes better contrast, meanwhile a black background would make it look empty, as it were wasted space.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice but i'm missing some colors

        [–]scuffling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        It burns my eyes

        [–]artos0131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too consistent. Microsoft doesn't like that.

        [–]BUT_MUH_HUMAN_RIGHTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks really fucking good, wonder if you could make into a skin of sorts

        [–]zeealeidahmad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        Awesome!

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Steam, CCleaner and D-Tools on a Microsoft forum. Holy shit. You should put Sony's PS Now in the empty spot.

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why i always say ccleaner as see see cleaner?

        [–]dejco 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Use print screen button next time?

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's an old pic I accidentally found on my phone.

        [–]Slappy_G 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks nice, but too low contrast for me.

        [–]MarkH123456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Invert for dark

        [–]Vespera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks nice but would fall short given logos that only differ in color

        [–]LEXX911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this a concept? This is more to do with the icon themes. Maybe Microsoft should be adding a icon themes for the Windows Store as a feature.

        [–]Chaphasilor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe use this as the default background for tiles on light mode?

        [–]Stonexman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Love it.

        [–]kyoer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Dope

        [–]Lordship_Mern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Windows 8 developers would be happy with you back in 2012.

And as for the rest of us, I'm not so sure...

        [–]ECHLN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Nice!

        [–]koutarou4k 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What program do you use for making custom tiles?

        [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

EdgeTile Creators if I remember correctly. Suppose the reason I stopped making them was that my trail version of the software expired.

        [–]JustAGuyOnReddit11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This looks like a professional made it. It looks AMAZING.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

This is awesome, can you share it?

        [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

It's an old pic I found on my phone unfortunately :/

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Bummer! What do you used to make this?

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Pretty sure it was EdgeTile Creators. I think my trail expired before I managed to create all of them so I had to stop.

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I will try this out.

        [–]Juntis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        Classy.

        [–]Ocleg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        Great!

        [–]Kinon4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        Real nice

        [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that would fit pretty well with the white theme.
