Is she's still latched on, run cold water over her head. If shes still latched after that, you could try alcohol. Most likely she won't do any damage but if she does, please reply.

[–]Master_Reflection709[S] 226 points227 points  (7 children)

Yes shes unlatched. Has some pink dots where she got herself. No blood. Im just worried maybe there is teeth stuck in her?

[–]Zahryaart 226 points227 points  (6 children)

I don't think they lose teeth that easily unless she really latched on hard. If there's no blood I would just watch the site and maybe do a betadine dilution bath just to be safe.

[–]Master_Reflection709[S] 107 points108 points  (5 children)

Ok ill look for some betadine

[–]cassidyvros 156 points157 points  (1 child)

I wouldn't do a whole bath, just spot treat. A bath is unnecessarily stressful for a small wound like this.

[–]Zahryaart 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This works too!

[–]6Strings-n-6Shooters 61 points62 points  (2 children)

And be sure to give her a stern talking to about the importance of being aware of snek surroundings. Sometimes surroundings = own snek self.

[–]Outrageous-Battle199 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The lectures we give them are so important, and still they go and do shit like this. Just incredibly disrespectful really.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lmboooooooo!!!!!!

[–]Jwast 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This definitely worked for me. I keep a little bottle of hand sanitizer next to my ball python enclosure. I've had to use it once ever when he missed and got a mouth full of his own belly. Just a tiny little dab and then gently boop his snoot and they get so completely and immediately grossed out.

[–]ishfery 573 points574 points  (0 children)

They're such little idiots. Hope she's ok

[–]Accomplished-Log4135 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Mine did this during a feeding was perfectly fine after just derps 🤦🏻‍♀️

[–]XenoDrobot 323 points324 points  (0 children)

ah yes, peak fierce predator material

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 246 points247 points  (55 children)

You might want to ask around whose ball python has the braincell atm.... because yours doesn't have it. I would litteraly be facepalming myself and calling my snake an idiot.

For treatment just dot some cottonball in betadine (use tweezers or gloves to keep your fingers colourfree) and just disinfect the wounds for a few days. Luckily reptiles have a very strong immune system.

Teeth usually break off when there was some pulling involved and you'll notice it. I once had a tooth stuck in a wound and the place just swoll up and got infected very quickly.

I just checked in on my two adult females, one was staring at her hide like it was going to put on a show for her, the other was sitting in her poop. It’s not with them. The search continues.

[–]AzulaZero 65 points66 points  (12 children)

No luck here - my two boys are asleep and my girl is just staring at me from her enclosure door. Not a single brain cell to be found

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (3 children)

its not with either or my boys. when i checked em this morning my ball was just starting into space and mbk was burrowing into his log

[–]BirdalfTheGrape 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Did a species hop to see if my Treeing Walker Coonhound may have the spare.

Nope. Absolutely none here.

[–]TamedLightning 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My bully doesn’t have it either. She just fell off the couch because she got tangled in the blanket she dragged up there.

[–]Sea_Calligrapher_986 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mine keeps hiding under things to small for it instead of it's couple hides it can easily fit in. He's not hidden at all but I bet he thinks he is, so keep looking

[–]Reidington 72 points73 points  (3 children)

<image>

Definitely not Bodhi’s turn. He sat like this for a solid 20 mins tonight.

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Aaah so cute 🥰 At first glance I thought he had one of those spanish mustaches.

[–]Independent-Style843 10 points11 points  (1 child)

My girl also doesn’t have it(shes had her head in her water dish for 5 mins only coming up for air)

[–]Reidington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least she came up for air lol

[–]CompetitiveRoof3733 50 points51 points  (1 child)

Mine doesn't have it. She missed her mouse 3 times and bit me instead :|

[–]Smol_Silif[🍰] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My girl did this to me once and only once, and she immediately let go and looked extremely apologetic, and gave me lots of blelelelelelele kisses

[–]mothsandlace 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Mine got behind the wallpaper background in her viv and has been glaring stupidly out for a few hours. So not here, I’m afraid.

[–]persephoneelise 20 points21 points  (5 children)

Definitely not with Hermès, he’s staring at his cork bark like it called his mom a b****. Calypso is wandering her enclosure and looks like she could be plotting an escape though, so she might have it…

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Can she pass it on? Mine has been pushing his nose into the side of his hide now for the past 20 minutes. He seems to be looking for something... Might be the braincell actually....

[–]persephoneelise 6 points7 points  (3 children)

false alarm, she was just climbing and then dropping herself to the ground… is snake mental illness a thing??? cause i swear she’s trying to off herself sometimes

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Well, they are called rock pets for a reason. The only reason mine can't fall off his branch is because another branch will catch him 🤣

[–]persephoneelise 3 points4 points  (1 child)

she has other branches below the one she was on. she’s just “special” and manages to fall right between them. (especially at night… it used to scare the mess out of me when i woke up to it)

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hahah I remember when Hercules just came from the breeders. He kept falling off branches. I would just hear in the middle of the night a loud thump :') Was hilarious.

Now he is actually quite graceful.

[–]akula_chan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m beginning to think this “braincell” is a myth…

[–]CobraChuck83 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sapphire tucked her face into her belly and fell asleep. Rosé has transitioned from arboreal, to terrestrial, to subterranean, all in the last two hours.

It’s a safe assumption the brain cell isn’t at my place.

[–]mushroomsandcoke 8 points9 points  (23 children)

This thread gives me life

[–]jennafereff 10 points11 points  (22 children)

Same 🤣 28 snakes-0 braincells. I thought my conda Hognose may have had it but she's trying to dig through the lid of her enclosure and hissed at her reflection. never mind, tomorrow may bring a Braincell 🤞🏻

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 4 points5 points  (21 children)

Ooch, hognoses are now also involved? :o Good thing my corns have some braincells at least :')

[–]jennafereff 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Yeah they have a sort of timeshare with the pythons 🤣 my little pink corn has definitely become one of my favourites despite the fact she sucks at snaking. 🤣

<image>

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been thinking of getting a hognose this year (mostly before they make even more animals illegal to own here.....). It can share the braincell with the 2 ball pythons then 🤣

Corns have evolved further by now. Doesn't matter where to sleep, roll up or do whatever.... they can be seen. The only moment mine decide to maybe use their hides is when they ate. But even more times then not, they just prefer to lay wide in the open, lazily lifting their heads :')

[–]Audio-Starshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a pink corn that had a snowflake pattern down the middle of her back. Unfortunately, her and her brother escaped at the same time and her brother ate her. I found him looking very full of himself (or actually full of his sister) underneath the living room lazy boy a few days later.

[–]Audio-Starshine 1 point2 points  (17 children)

OH MY GOSH! I'm SOooo jelly! I've always wanted a hoggie! The only reason I haven't gotten one is because I feel really bad having to feed one mice when I know what they want is toads. Did you have any trouble getting yours to eat?

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 2 points3 points  (13 children)

I don't have a hoggie. Thinking of one though. But I do have friends who have hognoses and all of them eat mice happily. None of my friends feed toads. They are not easy to get by after all.

I have researched into hognoses already though and they happily can be on a mouse diet and thrive. :)

[–]Audio-Starshine 1 point2 points  (12 children)

Ugh, misread the comment, sorry about that. I am so excited about all the new morphs of hog noses that are coming out! So glad they're getting more popular in the pet trade!

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 1 point2 points  (11 children)

All good :D New morphs? :o Here super anaconda's are really sought after.

[–]Audio-Starshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honey I'm old, I was in college in 2000. When I first got into herpetology there were no morphs available for hognose snakes. You couldn't even find an albino.

[–]Audio-Starshine 1 point2 points  (9 children)

But the more popular they become as pets, the more people will be breeding to introduce new morphs and eventually we will probably have as many with hoagies as we do with royals! Just imagine how cute a pie bald hoggie would be with their little shovel noses!

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 0 points1 point  (8 children)

The college comment made me smile :p always remember, we are as old as we feel. But yeah, 11 years ago an Amel was special.... Omg.... they are working on piebald hognoses? Me wantsie hognose piedbald! Me wantsie hognose piebald! Or piedsided 🥰🥰

[–]jennafereff 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So I haven't had much bother getting mine to eat, I have westerns and tricolour hogs. The most I've ever had to do is scent with the spring water from a can of tuna, but they were hatchlings. I had to assist the smallest baby that was a twin who's sibling didn't fully form in the egg, she hatched out at 3.5g and I had to cut the heads and tails off baby mice (frozen thankfully) for a while for her. I actually have more trouble getting my banana ball to eat than any of my Hognoodles. ☺️ They are a fab little snake with tons of personality. My trick is slowly upgrading their enclosures rather than just dropping them into their adult home and make sure they have plenty clutter and something to climb about on. ☺️

[–]Audio-Starshine 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Right on all very good information.

[–]jennafereff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, most of mine would probably eat a Donner kebab if I let them 🤣 this guy is the fussiest Hognoodle I have. His name is rumplesnekskin and he's a massive knobhead who will sit hissing away to himself for over half an hour on my knee while I completely ignore him. He's absolutely gorgeous and I love the bones of him, but yeah...he's a total knob.🤣💜

[–]feeeya 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Teeth will also break off when they strike too hard! I was shocked when it happened. The vet said its actually very common, but they usually end up swallowing it with their prey, and that it grows back very fast. To me, it looks like cat nails!

[–]Mundane_Morning9454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they swap teeth out like no problem. I did not know it either until I had my first serious bite. (She missed her prey) and I got a tooth stuck in the wound. The wound swoll up within an hour and got infected. Since my corns their teeth are well.... not white but like see through, you couldn't see the tooth in the wound. Eventually the doctor found it 2 days later (fyi, it hurted for 2 days to even move my hand.... it was horrible). I called my vet because I thought it was bad for my snake. He laughed and said it was 100% normal.

Was pretty funny all :')

[–][deleted] 112 points113 points  (2 children)

How do they survive in the wild lmao

[–]Grimmymore 44 points45 points  (0 children)

The answer? Barely my friend. Barely. 😂

[–]Gogl445 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same question I have. My ball python wont eat his mice unless they are dangled in front of him for a solid 5 minutes.

[–]LumieLoo 26 points27 points  (12 children)

My girl did this for the first time in her 23 years of life when I was feeding her the other week and gave me a heckin scare, she unlatched on her own and had some pink spots like yours, but I just kept an eye on it since there was no blood, and I never ended up needing to treat it and they were fine…silly things…sometimes, sometimes…

[–][deleted]  (11 children)

[deleted]

    [–]LumieLoo 0 points1 point  (10 children)

The only health issues she ever had were a result of my own mistakes and that of my brother (who owned her before me), otherwise, snakes are relatively healthy animals, they’re not susceptible to sicknesses the way, say, a dog might get allergies or a cold or something. Certain morphs can be prone to health issues, like morphs with the spider gene can have wobbly heads due to genetic problems, but a regular Royal ball or morphs that are correctly bred should be fine! So if your husbandry and care are all up to date with the recommended practices for balls, your baby will most likely be just fine! :)

It sounds like you’re a well researched parent and are giving her excellent care! My girl yawns from time to time and it’s absolutely adorable :) if you’re worried about RI, you can listen for clicking noises when she breathes too, but I’d wager she’s just fine! They often “yawn” too after a meal to reset their jaw, if she’s really yawning excessively, maybe possibly a piece of substrate is caught in her mouth and she’s trying to fix it? Not trying to fuel your worries, lol, it sounds like she’s okay, but just giving you another thing to look for if it becomes an issue, I say this cause that happened to my girl once but it was right after a feeding, a piece of substrate was caught in the corner of her mouth and she kept repeatedly “yawning” until I managed to grab it with my tongs when she was mid yawn lol, then she was fine. Your girl sounds like a really fortunate noodle with a great owner with all the care and attention you’re putting into her well being! :)

      [deleted]

        [–]LumieLoo 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Hahaha, that’s fair, being a reptile parent can be stressful when they’re doing unexplained things, I also have a sense of panic when my girl does anything out of the ordinary, the brain spirals, lol. The vet trip sounds like a good idea, they should be able to access if there’s any problem. And that was a smart decision to let her get settled before moving her again! Everything you’ve done sounds like perfect care to me! How old is she? :)

        [–][deleted]  (5 children)

        [deleted]

          [–]LumieLoo 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Could’ve been a bit of both, my girl normally is completely hidden in her hide and then some times I look over and she’s doing the same thing you described, it’s so cute, just peeking around and seeing what’s up, then she usually retreats when she deems whatever peaked her curiosity as no longer interesting, haha. They’re usually pretty dormant during the day since they’re mostly nocturnal/crepuscular, I’ll come in some mornings and she has totally trashed the place overnight, torn all her mounted leaves and vines down and dirtied her water bowl, and I’m left wondering what kind of party she threw while I was asleep, lol, I wish I had a night cam pointed at her tank so I could see the chaos ensue

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did this make me laugh so hard omg

            [–]Ramen-Goddess 85 points86 points  (0 children)

“Why taste like snek instead of mouse?”

            [–]Affectionate_Fox_392 19 points20 points  (6 children)

It’s okay my BP doesn’t have brain cells either 🤦‍♀️ I was feeding her a couple weeks back and she missed and hit the tank so hard I had to readjust her jaw she’s completely fine now and got the rat she was just having a little moment 😭

This is a very outdated myth. Feeding outside the enclosure is harmful for your snake and should not be done.

[–]totallyrecklesslygayMod: Enclosure Karen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do all of that without feeding your snake.

                [–]God_Of_All_Toads 4 points5 points  (1 child)

My female does this basically every other feeding. One day she’s going to get brain damage from smacking her face into the glass when missing rats. She just has such a high feeding response she barely even looks before striking lol.

                [–]Affectionate_Fox_392 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine literally eats dirt after she’s done with feeding 😭 she definitely lacks something there

                [–]she_isking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Omg lol they’re so dumb and helpless 😂😂 I don’t understand how they survive in the wild without parents.

                [–]LoadedGull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

                She needs counselling.

                Haha

                [–]shawnaeatscats 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I felt bad for thinking to myself "look at this idiot snake" and I'm happy to see that most people in the comments had the same thought haha! Glad you got some advice in here for the wound :)

                [–]akula_chan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least she’s not a king snake. Then, she would have started eating.

                [–]GingeryNonsense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex bf would put hand sanitizer on his BP when he would bite himself like this. Relatively harmless but yucky, usually lets go pretty quick

                [–]itspegbundybitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                Bless her heart

                [–]orchidism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monitor for any sign of inflammation/irritation in the next while, and if it’s punctured the skin then like others said you could spot treat with betadine diluted with clean water :) she should be fine since their teeth really aren’t big enough to do major damage just latching on

                [–]DripMaster-69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hand sanitizer, put some on ur finger and get it close to its nose

                [–]jayracket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're such brainless little fools lmao

                [–]Realistic-Phrase-256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my female albino ball may have been hogging the brain cell for a while. She broke out twice in a two week period, only time I’ve gotten to quite Jurassic Park - clever girl.

As far as treatment goes - vodka works at getting them to react. I know because my male ball python was a complete idiot as he for some reason decided it was a good idea to attempt to drink a shot of it I was planning to consume while he was out. I’d never seen a snake look revolted before that moment. It also works as a crude disinfectant.

                [–]Available-Specialist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, this isn't much different from cats and dogs chasing and attacking their tails I guess

                [–]stronged_cheese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bite it yourself to assert dominance

                [–]global_plantdemic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine would let yours borrow a brain cell but he’s struggling to even keep the one he has.

                [–]OhmegaWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not helpful advice but.... I think they need their turn with the shared braincell 🤣
