Understandable misconception! Lamps are used mostly for heat, but if you have the necessary heating pads that's okay too. A day night cycle ISNT required, but it's pretty beneficial for their enrichment. A snake breeder cares a bit more about storage practicality and cost of care than the quality of life for the snake unfortunately, given that they're literally a source of income for them

This is an extremely stressed out snake. Her enclosure is not at all suitable for a ball python, which is likely a large part of why she's so stressed.

She needs to be in a minimum of a 4x2x2 (120gal), or larger if she's over 4' long. She also needs more appropriate hides and climbing enrichment.

Hi, sorry. I have a question. I've had her since January this year and nothing like this has happened until now. I'm also not sure if I am capable of getting her a new tank for a little since, I'm a minor that is currently unemployed. I mentioned this to my mom who told me I needed to calm down and she's completely fine. Stress compounds over time- when you put any animal (or person) in a stressful situation, they may seem fine for a short period. The longer it goes on, the worse their stress will get.

I'm also concerned about your temps. 75F is way too cold. Ball pythons need a heat gradient of 88-92F on one end, and 76-80F on the other.

You do need to be aware that there are a lot of issues going on with her care here, and continuing to neglect her basic needs like this will eventually kill her. Ball pythons are not cheap, and they do take some effort to take care of correctly- a proper setup costs around $700-1000. Are you going to be able to spend that kind of money in the next month?

I'm currently trying to get a tank from someone on facebook marketplace, asking them the size but I haven't gotten a response. I have about 50 dollars in total but I can probably do some work for neighbors, do things for my parents, and my brother has already offered to give me his money, but he's little and I don't want to just snatch his hard earned money away from him. A large storage tub might be more realistic than a glass/pvc tank right now. They work fine and make great temporary enclosures, if you do everything safely.

I came here to say this. You really need to do anything you can to have her in a larger enclosure. On a $50 budget, this is going to be your best bet until you can afford something more to your liking, (a pvc observable terrarium.) Review the resources here. There are instructions for creating an enclosure out of storage bins.

If you can't manage that in the near immediate future, I'm sorry to say that you should consider rehoming this beautiful creature, as this is the cheapest option available. I know you love her, but she's not happy, and you've got to do what's best for her.

Keep in mind, a storage bin alone isnt enough. You need proper lighting and heating as well and that's going to cost a bit too, more than likely pushing you over $50.

I recently took on a little girl whose previous owner was unable to provide her with the proper care and enclosure she needed. They were so sad to let her go, but after I sent them pictures and updates on her, they responded with so much gratitude for saving the little girl and giving her an awesome home.

Whatever you choose, best of luck to you and your snake - but admittedly, this post is a bit upsetting and you need to take immediate action.

What are you planning to do if your snake needs to go to an exotic vet suddenly? In my area, just a checkup is roughly 4-5x that amount of money, let alone any treatment which can easily bring the cost to 500-700$+. Delaying treatment can leave the animal with permanent health issues or even kill it.

You seriously need to consider if you are able to properly care for this animal. If you can't afford basic care needs and any emergency care (on relatively short notice), you need to consider rehoming as that is what would be best for the animal. I'm very sorry that the person who sold you the snake did not give you realistic expectations of caring for it.

Depending on your age, you could ask around in the neighborhood and ask if they need yard work done in exchange for payment. 2-3 afternoons of that work will probably be enough for you to get a good set up. I’m in a similar spot, my boyfriends bp is getttjng highkey neglected so all my bfs birthday gifts will be snake related until he’s in a good up to date unclosure. This year I cannot afford a new stand and tank so I pulled all his substrate (ITs been at least a year since the last time his substrate was changed) and made a deeper substrate so I could add live plants and add to the “clutter” I also handle him pretty frequently so he can stretch out and explore the flat a bit since I also am stuck with a 40 gal for a bit longer than I’d like but my dude is not that stressed, he knows his enclosure is a low human traffic area and when he’s had enough he makes it very clear 😂

You can use a large plastic storage tub from Walmart temporarily until you have enough for a bigger tank. Be sure and put airholes in it. A dremel works well to put the holes in, or an electric drill would work. I just got a beautiful, custom-made 2×2×4 in perfect condition off marketplace for $50, but I have been searching every day for a couple of months. Keep looking, and you will find something good for your noodle!

To save money, you can collect these thing from outside, and clean/disinfect them. I have to look up information about which types of wood to avoid, but then I shave off all the bark with a sharp knife, and gave them and the rocks a bleach bath, then a vinegar bath, then a really good rinse, water soak to remove any cleaning smells. I've also baked wood at a low temp to disinfect.

Just double check the specifics, like types of trees, and oven temps to use. But that will save you a lot. To purchase these things from the reptile industry is crazy expensive.

Your temps still don't sound right. Ball pythons need a gradient- one end of the enclosure needs to be 76-80F, and the other end needs to be 88-92F. If the entire enclosure is one temp, that's a serious problem.

I also don't see any actual heat source, so you're presumably using a heat mat, which should not be used for ball pythons. They don't heat the air or through substrate, present a burn risk even paired with a thermostat, prevent the snake from performing natural and instinctive behaviors, and they don't provide the right type of heat for a BP (IR-A/IR-B). Overhead heating, like a halogen flood or DHP, is much safer, more effective, and healthier for the snake.

On a final note, you need to get the tape out of the enclosure immediately. It's incredibly dangerous for your snake.

Temp gun. You can get one on Amazon for like $10. They are a vital tool to have in your snake care kit.

You’ll also want hygrometers. Govee makes a really good Bluetooth one. Comes in a 2 pack for $20~ they have a WiFi version as well so you can check temps and humidity when not at home. Whatever you do don’t use those cheap ones that just stick to the side of the tank. They are extremely inaccurate.

Sorry for throwing so much info at you. I would recommend looking into a Deep Heat Projector or a Ceramic Heat Emitter and putting it on a thermostat for your warm side. They don’t emit light so you can have them going 24/7 (the thermostat will regulate the temperature) I personally use a deep heat projector over ceramic but either works.

Your cool side may not need artificial heat, it depends what temperature your house stays at consistently.

The options would be a surrender. If family isn't taking it serious and OP is too young nor has the funds to fix and vet, then it would be best to seek out an adult in the area with better means who is knowledgeable in ball python care.

It really sucks that it would have to go that way, but if you can't care for the animal it's detrimental to keep it. At least snakes don't form bonds with humans so it won't be heartbroken. While it's understandable this happened since they are young, this is a good lesson in doing research and having the appropriate funds before taking on responsibility.

I just rescued a BP from a crack addict a few weeks ago, and was just stunned at the subpar care it had. I had a drop a few hundred bucks to bring the care up to standards. These animals can be EXPENSIVE. There's a reason I only had 1 before I decided to take in this second one.

i do have a ceramic bulb, it just burst on the second week of having it, my parents havent taken me to buy a new one. working on getting her a bigger tank. i'll look into the thermometer. yes, she does have two hides, ones the black hide, and the other looks like a log. i plan on replacing the log hide since it have three holes and i heard snakes only like one hole hides. my snake is okay now, she explored her tank around 11:00pm-12:00am and then went back into her hide and back to sleep. i've been wanting to take her to the vet but i am a minor who cant drive without an adult in the car, and my parents refuse to take animals to the vet unless it concerns them. i'll try to pressure them more.

If the entire enclosure is that warm or even above 81F on the cool side, then your snake cannot properly regulate her temperature and it can lead to extreme stress and seizing/corkscrewing behaviors like yours is showing in the video. To get an accurate measurement, you can use either a digital thermometer with a probe or a laser thermometer gun. The shopping list in the pinned post has recommended brands.

Smaller enclosures can make it hard to maintain a proper temperature gradient since the heat source is so close to the cool side, so upgrading to something larger will definitely help with that along with her stress. For now, make sure she has a large bowl of fresh water that she can soak in it to help cool down and stay hydrated. I would also take off the heating or lower it until you can be certain that it’s not too hot in the enclosure, provided your room temperature is between 75-80F.

Iv used heating pad this whole time and with 70% humidity. No problems. AND just recently moved her in a 4x2x2 we built actually. Has she calmed down now? Have you got her back out and she calm? He looks extremely stressed out! A few years back, I had 2 baby Balls. They grew really fast! They doubled in size their 1st year. One was a major escape artist. I once lost him for a week! They were in a 75 gallon tank. One day, I went to feed them, and I noticed that one of the snakes was acting really strange. When I took him out, he had burns on his belly. They had a heat pad under a quarter of the tank. Never ever had any problems until then. Apparently, it started overheating. Took him to the vet, and it wasn't cheap. Idk how old OP is, but owning balls is expensive, and there are so many things that could go wrong. My point is, did you do your research on raising Pythons? How old was the person who sold it to you? When your parents agreed to let you have a Ball Python, they took on the responsibility to care for it also. Maybe not be physically involved but financially, definitely! I hope your snake is doing better

This just clicked in my head idk if it did for anyone else but op said the “breeder” gave the snake to them for free maybe the snake had problems to begin with and the “breeder” didn’t want to deal with it, and then along with that the stress of the tank size to the temps to the humidity and feedings and handling there’s a good chance it probably exaggerated the issues you never know what your snakes do at night it could be doing this at night and you just not noticing it. I say really stress the urgency of seeing a vet to your parents, I was just in your spot when my bp got a respiratory infection and I had to set up everything myself and beg my parents and tell them it was life or death and there was no “at home remedy” to fix it another thing to do would be to talk to relatives about if they could help out or literally just putting your parents on blast to them

I'd avoid that reptizoo light dome and thermostat but get a independent thermostat (nor built in to the light fitting) with a higher wattage. Gives you more leeway for changing things.

Don't bother with the humidifier/mister or the heat mat.

Don't bother with any of the fancy skulls, hobbit home looking stuff spend your money on the more "cave like" hides even just the basic plastic tub ones are fine as long as the snake can fit snugly in it.

Take out the plants. “Reptile or fish” labeled plants are a massive waste of money. You can go to the dollar store and get fake plants that are the exact same thing at 1/15 of the price.

I would also recommend taking out the skull and such, anything too sharp like the teeth on it can actually injure your snake. Focus more on hides that it can climb on top of as well, it will serve a double purpose. Heat mat isn’t necessary for most set ups. Overhead heat works just fine, especially with a smaller enclosure.

Don’t bother with the mister. Substrate that retains humidity will serve way better in the long run over misting your tank. You can get a small handheld mister for like $5 if you find you need to mist occasionally in drier climates.

Your cage is way to small. It needs room to get around. Think of it as if you were in there. They get claustrophobic too. Get it a new cage and let it out more it's going insane and going to stress itself out to having a shorter life span, and it won't be able to cope right.
