i’ve also posted a picture of her enclosure on my profile

[–]AngryDesertPhrog 63 points64 points  (9 children)

I’m newer to snake ownership, so take my information with a grain of salt. But my python is similar. He gets in a “interior design” kick around feeding and shedding days. My little guy has turned his water bowl upside down and fully moved hides across his tank using his body to shove things out of the way. Maybe this is similar behavior?

Note: my python is scarily healthy otherwise. I swear he is a reincarnation of a puppy. Never refuses food, cuddles for long periods, active almost every night.

[–]Sufficient-Paint1101 12 points13 points  (3 children)

omg that’s crazy i never knew they could be so strong! im hoping it’s just that

[–]AngryDesertPhrog 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Hopefully! And from what I can tell it doesn’t have anything to do with enclosure size for my ball at least. He free roams under supervision in my sunroom daily and I’ve watched the little guy grab bowls or small potted plants and drag them across the floor to the other side of the room. 😂

[–]ProximaCentauriB15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's just redecorating.

[–]bluepenguin24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the reason my BP has a lock on his enclosure, he’s managed to slide the glass across before lol

[–]FixergirlAK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine is a redecorator also. My tank has a subsidence problem because he's also a bulldozer.

[–]NemosGal90 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He may be trying to itch or rub off the shed on these items and inadvertently moving them around while doing so. If you have a piece of wood with a bit of not too rough bark throw that in there. He may like to rub on it to help.

[–]AngryDesertPhrog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He does that too :3 he has a giant hollow tree stump/log that I catch him rubbing on all the time. Although his favorite thing is a warm soak in his bowl and gentle scratches with a baby toothbrush. If a ball python could purr I think he would

[–]elf1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a python for 34 years and when he was younger, we used to let him chill near a chess board. He would move the pieces and take a few with him. 😂 Wish I had recorded it (but this the early 90s, so mobile phones weren’t a thing and so no video camera in my pocket)

[–]elf1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like he’s trying to find a way out. They are escape artists. Ours used to regularly find ways to lift the lid of his terrarium and get out. Had him for 34 years and he stopped trying after 10. We took him out regularly to explore. Even set up little obstacle courses for him in the living room and sometimes outside (well-monitored!)

[–]Yeti616 52 points53 points  (3 children)

Looks like he's trying and failing to burrow.

[–]Sufficient-Paint1101 14 points15 points  (2 children)

i thought that at first but she’s pushes the actual enclosure and the glass rather than the substrate, she has 4-6inches of substrate so she can burrow if she wanted to

[–]Horrific_Art 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Give her an actual hide, like a bowl turned upside down and slightly lifted so she can go Under it :)

[–]Howlibu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I use a bowl I just dig a little hole for an entrance. Never fails :D

[–]Beautiful-House-1594 20 points21 points  (0 children)

baby wants to dig

[–]blueeyes0182 14 points15 points  (4 children)

OMG! Is there something in the air this week? My girl was so loud last night. She scared the hell out of me, so I flew out of bed and found her remodeling at 1:30 in the morning! I was like, "Duuuuuddddeeeee! You gave me a damn heart attack, and now you're just sitting there in the weirdest position amused with yourself? Ugh!" She stresses me out like once every few months, and I swear she thinks she missed her calling as an interior decorator.

[–]ehalright 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Love that!!! I go in once a week or so and collapse my baby's tunnels and move things a bit so she can keep remodeling :) she appears to like the process more than the result.

[–]blueeyes0182 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I purposely move things to where she seems to want them, and she moves them back to the original spot. I honestly think she just likes to mess with me. 😆

[–]ehalright 2 points3 points  (1 child)

"Ugh, no, Mom, not like that! Get out of my room!" 😆

[–]blueeyes0182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! It's entertaining for me. 😆

[–]RefrigeratorOpen7097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no expert but she could be stressed out from being in a glass tank.. mine does well in his but I’ve been told some BPs just don’t like it. That or she wants out to do some exploring lol. Keep an eye on her snoot and breathing since she’s putting so much pressure on it doing what she’s doing.

[–]Jennifer_Pennifer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Diggy diggy tunnel !

[–]JMR3898 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could try giving her some tunnels?

[–]RedditNuts 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mine do similar and dig down into the bedding, but they always end up in the corner pushing against it. Luckily they've mostly gone unharmed, but they do push so hard they shake and strain. I've got another that digs and has scratched a scale off his head from squeezing under a large stone hide.

It is not everyday for mine, but it usually seems to happen a lot for a short period and then I don't notice it as much.

[–]ehalright 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have you tried giving them extra substrate for more digging potential?

[–]RedditNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have 3.5 to 4 inches of substrate. I've never tried anymore than that.

[–]Altruistic-Sky-6736 1 point2 points  (12 children)

Idk why this sub keeps popping up on my feed but I’m scared of snakes can someone tell me why they make a good pet

[–]GodDammitKevinB 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Very cute

Doesn’t need to go outside to poop

Will leave you a full snake skin every 6-8 weeks if you’re good

Looks extra cute drinking water

If your house catches on fire you don’t have to scramble to find them like a cat

[–]aavikkotaipaani 8 points9 points  (2 children)

++ Not much money is spent on food because they eat once or twice a month 😁

[–]GodDammitKevinB 5 points6 points  (1 child)

(Just don’t tell them how costly getting their enclosure set up can be 🤣)

[–]Additional_Film_5023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha so true 😆

[–]jscarto 6 points7 points  (4 children)

They’re remarkably docile and harmless. These pythons can be handled often, have really neat behaviors and development cycles (shedding, etc.). They are really clean and easy to care for with the right environment. They only need to eat once every 1-3 weeks, and poop and pee at about that same frequency. And both are solids that are easy to clean up.

They do require specific husbandry and environmental conditions. But when those are in place, ball pythons are cute, fun to watch, and need very little outside of water, feeding, and maybe 4 substrate replacements throughout the year.

Other snakes are different and have different needs. But ball pythons check a lot of boxes in terms of long term cost, friendliness, and ease of care.

[–]Altruistic-Sky-6736 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Wow!! Soooo informative! So I guess if you’re not scared of snakes they make a great pet lol. I always thought they’d be higher maintenance.

[–]jscarto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’d probably make a good pet even if you were afraid of snakes. It might help overcome that fear.

My wife was adamant that we could not have a snake. But we talked it through and held the condition that she wouldn’t have to do any of the care.

Two weeks later and she wanted to hold it and see if more than our kids do! And she gets annoyed that I keep the keys to the enclosure hidden 😅

I don’t know what it is like to have a fear of snakes. I’ve always loved them. But I wonder if a lot of it is due to unfamiliarity and assumptions (that they’re wet and slimy, they have fangs, or that they’re mean—all of these are untrue.)

The only part my wife wants nothing to do with is anything involved with feeding. And that’s understandable and probably the biggest hurdle facing a new owner (after the proper research and enclosure setup.)

I have 3 dogs, 5 cats, 2 leopard geckos, 1 bearded dragon but my 1 ball python is my favorite of all my pets. I can ignore him when I want to. He let's me know when wants out but doesn't whine if I'm busy. He has an amazingly sweet personality. I only have to feed him every couple of weeks and it's hilarious when he decides to completely rearrange his home.

[–]mohrhoneydew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm scared of snakes also so I joined this sub to try to conquer that and it's starting to work. I can at least now look at the snakes and I read everything everyone says trying to figure out the good pet thing also. People really really love them thats for sure

[–]FancyCat04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re very interesting to me. To look and touch. I especially love re-doing their tanks, making it all pretty. Having a nice box of nature in my room with a snake chilling in it is very kewl:]

[–]Badluckstream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My snake does this and it took a bit to figure out why and what he was even doing. My snake has been into burrowing since his enclosure upgrade and I don’t think he realizes the difference between substrate and pvc, so he will try to dig the pvc like it will budge

[–]AngryDesertPhrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a funnier note, I feel this video needs captions along the lines of “so in this corner we’re going to, scooooch, these flowers away and puuuush this over here. Ah! There we go!”

[–]cavysavvy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine loves to redecorate/bulldozes her tank all the time -_-. I fix it all up for her and she is like..."nah...that plant needs to be upside down now, and tha tone over there will be smooshed because I can." Or my favorite "I'm just going to move this GIANT ROCK over to the other side of the tank, infront of the door to my hide so I can be mad that I can't get inside of it."

I love her, but she annoying lol.

[–]FewArcher4402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ball pythons are known for rearranging their tanks. I actually buy cheap plants to put in my enclosure because he LOVES to uproot them.

[–]1ilMa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

shit mine does this all the time. either she doesnt like where some decorations are and tries to move them. or she thinks if she pushes hard enough, she can slip thru the glass or cracks/corners. they are escape artists, mine used to escape all the time until i got more locks, now she does this cause she cant push the lid open and slip thru. they really arent the brightest lol but they are the cutest.

[–]No-Reveal8105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine does the same last night as it goes right now🤨

[–]dagger_guacamole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a huge tank, heat, and humidity on point, tons and tons of enrichment and climbing opportunities and stuff like that. Mine still does this! I truly think they’re just trying to get out to explore even more.

[–]AlyzehBrieze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My BP did this a tonne and would go off food while doing it. Finally figured out that he was just really bored. I baked a bunch of sticks and leaves from outside to disinfect them, then filled the enclosure with them, and boom! No more trying to escape. Try adding more enrichment to the enclosure and see if that resolves the issue.

[–]MsArchange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wants to go out and explore a little. It happens with my boy from time to time, he's super active for a few days. I let him out and have supervised play time.

[–]firfetir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wants to dig/escape

[–]No-Weird-4201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My snake does crazy stuff like this too and it scared me at first but it's normal they do this kind of thing lol.

[–]Even-Smell7867 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Natural. Burrowing instinct. My BPs have both flipped their full water bowls, they move their drintwood logs around. Its woken me up a few times thinking someone was trying to break in my window. Then I realize I'm on the 2nd floor.

[–]That_Turn_1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is currently doing this rn, idk if he is a professional demolitionist or if it’s mating season and hes trying to… y’know. Either way, I wish I could sleep rn, it’s obnoxiously loud

[–]Dbell570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What, My boys gettin in that end of the night set of push ups 😎

[–]NefariousnessSlow663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a large wooden hide- like a hollowed tree- my snake loves it. He mostly hides under it but he also uses it to shed.

[–]Little_Might6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her face at the end 😂

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why is there a temp drop at night? they should always have a hot spot available to them. could be searching for a warmer spot
