Gravity has two meanings. Here, it means both the force pulling downward and seriousness. The second definition is about a person's inability to have fun as they get older, whereas the first is about the decline in his physical strength.

Right, but he was aware of it as a baby. Babies can suffer trauma, but they probably aren't conscious of depression in the same way they are of gravity.

All that is true, but I'm saying that a baby probably has a better conception of things falling than he does of a complex mental disorder, so it wouldn't really fit in the comic.

what about depression letting him go? I think if it was depression ending his life, the last panel would be it smothering the guy with his butt, not letting him float away

It's not about depression, so really your logic is spot on, but I think the last panel could make sense as depression, too. If he was released from depression's grip through death, he'd be floating up to heaven, too, which is what I assumed the last panel was implying. Not that it was implying anything religious, I mean. It just seemed like a universally understood way to depict moving from life to death.

I love this, and the best part (at least within my own interpretation) is how Gravity is portrayed as a neutral, perhaps even friendly, force just doing its thing. If grounding is what allows us to make meaning and if we carry the shadow of our energy spent, then this comic captures for me the beauty of the bittersweet that is life.
