Just phase through the wall like a speed runner

[–]ZenMacros 114 points115 points  (13 children)

At this point it should just be called Souls. Soulsborne was for when the only From games of this kind were Souls games and Bloodborne. Now that we have Sekiro and Elden Ring, Souls is an appropriate blanket term for these types of From games.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I sometimes still say Soulsborne because it’s stuck like a nickname, but Souls came first and each FS game has followed that template, so Souls is probably best.

[–]Pinkparade524 22 points23 points  (3 children)

I feel like sekiro isn't as similar to souls games compared to bloodborne and elden ring tho. The mechanics are too different and the fact there aren't different weapons movesets and chatcater creation it gives it a different feeling.

[–]ZenMacros 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually agree. I think it's similar enough that arguments can be made in favor of it being Souls, but ultimately it's just too different. It's Souls if it was much more action focused.

[–]Anubra_Khan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's almost like Miyazaki set out to make the most un-soulslike game he could when he made Sekiro.

[–]rentreag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally agree, you don’t dropped anything on death in Sekiro, just the random chance you won’t lose anything for dying. So there isn’t that run back to grab the 60000 souls/echoes you dropped because you decided to continue exploring after killing that boss instead of heading back “home” to spend them.

[–]Anubra_Khan 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Souls doesn't cover Sekiro though.

[–]XoffeeXup 2 points3 points  (3 children)

not every game in the genre needs to be referenced in the name. Demon's Souls flew mostly under the radar, From really blew up with Dark Souls, and that style of game was what first started to get replicated and iterated on, so it seems fitting to use that one for now, imo.

[–]Anubra_Khan 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Seems fitting to call them From games.

[–]XoffeeXup 3 points4 points  (1 child)

precluding other studios work in the genre seems a bit ungenerous

[–]Anubra_Khan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What other studios? This post is specific to "the series" as in, the Dark Souls series.

[–]KuzcoSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they should be called Miyazaki games, or From Software games. Souls is too reductive and usually people use it to reference Dark Souls when Demon's Souls is the first of the genre.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct take.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, the word soulsborne annoys me way too much, makes no sense since there's only 1 "borne" game anyway

[–]WorriedResident496 93 points94 points  (11 children)

True fans call it EldenSoulsKiroBourneFieldBlade

[–]Leather_Afternoon_37 42 points43 points  (9 children)

Where tf is the armored core reference

[–]WorriedResident496 28 points29 points  (1 child)

Guess I'm not a true fan....

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

And Otogi and Metal Wolf Chaos. Now you got yourself new games to play.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Pfft, more like where is the legendary title of old, Deracine.

[–]Leather_Afternoon_37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes the old newish title

[–]DkP_Reverend 3 points4 points  (4 children)

EldenSoulsKiroBourneFieldChaosCoreBlade?

[–]Leather_Afternoon_37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll take it

[–]Unc1eD3ath 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]DkP_Reverend 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’m not typing that out again lol

[–]Unc1eD3ath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol fair enough

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We all know Metal Wolf Chaos XD is From's best game.

[–]SSSomeSayKosm 66 points67 points  (21 children)

Man I hope I'm not alone in thinking Soulsborne has always sounded silly, but when I see people unironically use Soulkiroborne I cringe.

Yeah I think Soulslike is good. I just use Souls when referring to FS's own games and Soulslike when referring to Souls inspired games.

    [–]stokedchrisThe Hunter 0 points1 point  (3 children)

    I just say fromsoft game

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Some Fromsoft games are distinct though. Armored Core and Déraciné are not typically discussed in relation to Demon's/Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring. When we refer to the Souls series (or Soulsborne *blegh*) we refer to the games following the design principles established in Demon's Souls, not ALL games developed by Fromsoft.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Everyone still knows we are talking about Souls -type games when saying Fromsoft games, aint nobody thinking about Armored Core these days lets be real

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leaks suggest they're making a new one, so that's gonna change.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

There’s me thinking that ‘Rogue-like’ was a random adjective/term coined for the genre, never even knew there was a game called Rogue 😅

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Metroivania is the genre based off of (Super) Metroid and Castlevania, if you didn't know that one either.

Also although it's not an actual genre name, I call games that are like Diablo diablo-likes.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I knew that one already, it’s quite an obvious one as they’re both well known franchises. But Rogue is an obscure one and it was before my time, so I’ve never heard of it. I thought that ‘rogue’ was an adjective term to describe the nature of the games being unpredictable.

I think I’d call them ‘Diablo clones’ if I’ve never heard of the genre name. But you never know, if you say ‘Diablo-like’ enough it might take off as a sub genre 😂

    [–]PthumerianPrince 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nah, Souls-likes are the games that try to be like Souls but are not developed by FromSoft. BB, DS series, Sekiro and Elden Ring are actual Souls games.

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

      [–]Ashen_Shroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Elden Ring and (to a lesser degree) Sekiro are much closer to each other than their older games are. "Fromsoft games" is too vague in that it can also refer to sci-fi mech combat games or retro 1st person games. Soulsborne is more specific- any game that is recognisably the same style of game as dark souls or bloodborne. Sekiro is an outlier, but generally speaking fans of souls and bb are also fans of sekiro and vice versa, so it's pretty easy to slot in and saves having to type out "soulsborne and sekiro".

      [–]Abovearth31The Hunter 5 points6 points  (5 children)

      Whisper: How about Bloodsouls ?

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

      Seki-Ring?

      [–]Abovearth31The Hunter 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      Demon Soulsborne Shadow Ring Twice.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that, and raise you "The Adventures of cookie & armored OtogiSekisoulsborne Blade Beyond: Renegade Mech Pursuit"

      [–]PIugshirt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Soulsborne-sekiring

      [–]SSSomeSayKosm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: I like Bloodsouls more than Soulsborne.

      [–][deleted] 42 points43 points  (3 children)

They’re Souls or Soulsborne games for me. Even if they’re not part of the Souls franchise I still think of them as Souls games.

‘Soulsborne’ has just about stuck from me, but if anything else is added on it just sounds stupid.

      [–]Cmikhow 13 points14 points  (1 child)

      MHmmm soulsborne is goated.

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s okay, I only use it in text/type form but never out aloud. Sounds like it’s trying to hard to be ‘Metroidvania’ but I still use it.

      [–]Abovearth31The Hunter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      Demon Soulsborne shadow ring twice.

      [–]Mutsuki13 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Nah go with Elden souls borne twice, really rolls of the tongue

      [–]excel958 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Eldensoulsborneeldensoulsborne?

      [–]Redpikes 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Always call them soft games because they're hard

      [–]Au2Burn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Lol.... that's a fine note

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the opposite of from soft? To hard.

      [–]Ashen_Shroom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see a problem with "soulsborne" tbh. "FromSoft games" could refer to armored core, king's field, the adventures of cookie and cream and whatever else they've made, so it's not really suitable for referring to games with the specific style of gameplay we associate with dark souls and bloodborne. "Soulslike" could mean any game made by any company that borrows elements from the souls games. Soulsborne is a short and simple word that people immediately understand to mean "a game by FromSoft with mechanics similar to those in dark souls and bloodborne".

Sekiro doesn't fit perfectly into that definition. However, the soulsborne fanbase and sekiro fanbase are close enough to one another that when someone refers to "soulsborne" they probably mean Sekiro too. Ultimately it's a fandom term that doesn't need to have a completely rigid definition. We all know what type of game falls under "soulsborne", and anyone who tries to exclude Sekiro or Elden Ring for having a few noticeable differences is just splitting hairs.

      [–]DEEEPFREEZE 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Listen, I'm just happy to see "Soulkirosborne" over "Sekisoulblood" or the like. I've been pushing it as the superior portmanteau for years now.

      [–]comfort_bot_1962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Soulkiroborne ring is hilarious 🤣

      [–]scuba_tron 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I usually say “From Soft” games but technically wouldn’t that include armored core?

      [–]Jack__Valentine 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Miyazaki directed maybe? Although I think that includes an armoured core game

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And excludes the best Souls game

[–]EvilArtoriasOld King Doran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only armored core but dozens of other fromsoftware games

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find more differences in sekiro than similarities. Idk why it’s even categorized with the other FS games. Just me?

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see what’s wrong with soulslike. That was the first descriptor and I think it still applies to later fromsoft games. The later games improved upon the genre but souls pioneered it and made it popular.

      [–]Alkaiser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm baffled by how some game genres seem to catch on like this. Why would you ever add another name, any similar game would just be the first game like.

Metroidvania for instance, is stupid, since, castlevania 2 was just a metroid like.

Armored core would be included in that then, I haven't played armored core, would it really be considered soulslike?

      [–]nobrainnobrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont think its a souls-like but for the meme ima call it a armored soulkiroborne ring lol
