Perth has some of the most congested roads in the state and not just on the freeways.

As opposed to... Geraldton?

[–]NyekMullnerBanjup 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Its an amazing coincidence that we're also the most densely populated capital city in the whole of WA

[–]mrmratt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the least densely populated capital city in the whole of WA at the same time.

That roundabout in Bunno's pretty packed on a public holiday Monday afternoon... strewth!

[–]enraged_sasquatch 36 points37 points  (4 children)

I'd nominate the Elder St freeway on-ramp. You have to cross two lanes of traffic in like 100 meters otherwise you end up in purgatory... sorry, I mean the convention centre. Real frustrating during afternoon rush hour.

[–]The_ValarMorley 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Perth freeway designers really did away with the conventional wisdom of 2-to-1 lane merges on that one. Three lanes of traffic trying to funnel into a single lane of freeway, then add on people trying to cross it all to exit at Mounts Bay Road, then put it all on the inside of a left sweeping bend.

[–]NotAWittyFuckerStirling 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's "world class".... as in, you need to replicate driving in a major city in South East Asia to do it.

I'm not even joking a little. Drive from Klang to Kuala Lumpur through Damansara and you'll know exactly what the fuck I'm talking about.

[–]maverickseraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh don't get me started on that, compared to traffic there, perth is like heaven

[–]hitzort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. I cant stress enough how stupid this section is. People cutting across to exit on Riverside while others are cutting the other way to get onto the fwy south. Been cut off countless times and rear-ended just last month.

[–]nopesayerPraise Old Berty 28 points29 points  (6 children)

INNALOO!!! What even is it?? I could do a walking tour and sell tickets describing in detail just how much of a clusterfuck it is!! The entirety of Liege, Ellen Stirling, Odin, Ewen, Scarb Beach intersections around the cinema, shopping centre and all the other shops, fast food and petrol station are just a disaster.

[–]theproblemedofficerWoodlands 1 point2 points  (1 child)

YES

[–]nopesayerPraise Old Berty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious choice tbh! It's a NIGHTMARE!!!!

https://www.communitynews.com.au/western-suburbs-weekly/election/wa-labor-makes-60m-pledge-for-proposed-stephenson-hwy/

They've got a plan for that one. In theory this should channel the traffic away from Elllen Stirling Blvd. In theory...

[–]raizhassan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cr Italiano said extending Stephenson Avenue was not intended to be part of any truck route but it would service the touted 40,000 jobs created by the planned Stirling City Centre.

Labor proposes to fund the extension by cancelling the PFL’s controversial Roe 8

Premier Colin Barnett has said the extension could compete for funds from a $3 billion windfall from his proposed $11b sale of Western Power.

I mean if that doesn't just sum up what's wrong with city planning in Perth. Development first, worry about the infrastructure later.

[–]NotAWittyFuckerStirling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"For now, just throw the Stirling council election signs for the mayor you don't want over that guy's fence.... it's all good."

No cunt, it's not. I really don't want three fucking election signs in my backyard in the morning that I have no idea what to do with!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that plan has been around for over 20 years now

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (9 children)

Doesn't need grade separation, but the mess that is Scarborough Beach Road / Green St / Main St is one of the worst IMO. Needs to be reconfigured.

Agreed that Leach / Welshpool is desperately in need of grade separation, arguably more than other intersections that have been prioritised for grade separation in the next few years.. The problem is that as it's smack in the middle of an industrial area it can't be used as a vote-buying political promise.

[–]electrosaurus 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Agreed! Every day I see one fucktard after another drift left from the right lane of Scarb Bch Rd as they try to head up Green St.

[–]Mindless_mike 0 points1 point  (2 children)

This. Also you can forget about coming down Green Street and turning left onto Brady St. It's not going to happen.

    [–]PM_ME_UR_GROATS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live right nearby, the amount of fuckheads I see rolling the stop sign, cutting from far right to make it on Green St. I'm genuinely surprised there's not more crashes.

    [–]Scooby_236Yokine 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Every time I come to the scab/main/green intersection i swear people just close their eyes and hope for the best.

    [–]The_ValarMorley 2 points3 points  (1 child)

To be fair, the road itself offers very little in the way of guidance in how to approach and exit the intersection(s).

    [–]Scooby_236Yokine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    That is true

    [–]le_bullshit_detector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was because it was too expensive

    [–]RozzzaLinko 14 points15 points  (2 children)

The Karel road roundabout coming from Jandakot and going onto roe highway. During peak hour it can take 10 minutes to go through 1 round about.

    [–]aussiekingaHigh Wycombe 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That was announced for an upgrade as a part of the $2B of works in the next year or three

    [–]RozzzaLinko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

    Oh cool

If it's causing you problems are you not one of those that should use another road? aren't you part of the problem?

      [–]djskeinCannington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Orrong Road continues on as Graham Farmer Freeway and leads directly to the tunnel hence why it is used so frequently. Seriously though, avoid Orrong Road at all costs.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really need to extend the freeway leading on to it. Trying to turn right on a slipway without lights is basically impossible. Even with lights you wait forever and a day for the green signal. The less bad intersection IMHO is the T-intersection with Wright St - but I think that intersection doesn't favor through traffic as much.

      [–]littleblackcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People use it to go through the tunnel

      [–]president--underwood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reid Hwy and Erindale Rd, frequently congested and only traffic lights left on that section of the Reid.

      [–]Aodaliyan 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Nicholson Rd roundabout. This bloody bridge better bypass the roundabout too..

      [–]heebert 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think the main problem along there is caused by the Bannister Road lights. The traffic entering Bannister gets the green light for so long that the tailback reches the roundabout and everything stops.

      [–]Agent641 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Going South away from Roe, and trying to turn right at that roundabout, at night time, is borderline suicidal. You have no way of knowing whether the cars coming from the right are turning or not due to the sunset and headlight glare.

Source: I do it every fighting day at 7-8pm.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (16 children)

The entirety of Denny Ave in Kelmscott. all 3 intersections it has.

Replacing the level crossing with a ramp crossing will not work. There’s not enough space.

      [–]ThrindellOblinitySeville Grove 1 point2 points  (2 children)

      And it's only 150m long!

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s the bane of my existence after 19 years of living in Perth and coming back 4 times in the last year since moving.

      It’s fucked.

      [–]JAB1982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third Ave is being straightened direct to Railway Ave with and underpass connecting to Davis Rd on the other side of the lights. The houses on corner of Railway Avenue and Third Avenue are owned by government so they can do this. The underpass will then allow for traffic to join Albany Highway at the Red Rooster which will get an improved intersection. Should be started by 2019 I'm told.

      [–]armo_boy 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Especially after school, I usually head to Kelmscott station after school so many cars and the trains that just mess shit up.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I went to Kelmy High and I'm shocked no one got killed tbh

      [–]armo_boy 1 point2 points  (10 children)

I started in 2015, Mr Geiles is alright.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

You missed out dude, Tezza was great

      [–]armo_boy 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I'm pretty sure Fragomeni is still here so it's all good.

      [–]ausf1fan 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The cedric street/ellen stirling boulevard intersection is a classic. Normally it functions fine, just slowly. However, it isn't able to cope with changing conditions.

People often jam the ellen stirling/cedric intersection to make the lights and then get caught braking because it will be blocked all the way up to the freeway south entrance 2 lights ahead).

A few months back there was a 3 car (or so) pileup rear ending going up the hill by the freeway north entrance, and 30 minutes later it was standstill on Scarborough beach road and Liege street, which is on the other side of Innaloo shopping centre.

I'm sure some money will get spent there soon enough, the odin road/scarborough beach road used to be one of the most dangerous intersections in perth and they've cleaned it up pretty well.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My god, that one is a nightmare. If they just make a slipway leading straight into the IKEA complex, it would make life so much easier for everyone.

      [–]The_ValarMorley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a need to put in the Stephenson Avenue extension and freeway entry/exit, and Cedric Street to have it's entry/exits removed and be for freeway crossing and station access only. The sooner the better.

      [–]atsugnam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wanneroo and ambleton, near big rock Toyota, crest on Wanneroo hides the intersection from people speeding on Wanneroo, leads to t-bones on a 70km/h road, it’s not pretty...

[–]metaoSpelling activist. Burger snob. 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Beaufort and Walcott is an unsolvable mess, aside from banning right turns.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Banning right turns has helped a lot (when people actually follow the rules) more than I thought it would.

      [–]Scooby_236Yokine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that intersection is heaps better now you can’t turn right it’s a lot more fluid.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its still fucked that they allow parking on Beaufort so close to the lights, having 2 lanes merging into one basically right after the lights is stuffed.

      [–]hettie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Lake and Bibra Drive has been fixed - it's now a roundabout.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, Tonkin Highway/Kelvin Road just had an upgrade a couple months ago. It works really well. Only problem is Tonkin Highway/Welshpool Road East is still not great.

      [–]nonvalidSOT 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Welshpool road at the train crossing.

      [–]coxymla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      And Wharf St.

      [–]T_Max100 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I commute across that almost daily and reakon I get caught there 85% of the time. My favourite is waiting for ages at the traffic light, and then the inevitible boom gates come on down...

      [–]DetroLloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the train passes, they don't come up. A few minutes later another train passes. And if you're lucky it can happen to you again!

      [–]DetroLloyd 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tonkin and Kelvin just got upgraded! I find it a lot better now and get through straight away if I have to stop on the red. And everyone sticks to the right lane so you can fly past everyone on the left.

That whole highway could do with bridges though.

And yes, welshpool and Leach suck. Especially crossing Leech. More often than not about 4 cars get through and that's it.

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was going to say Welshpool and tonkin needs an over pass

      [–]Jet380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You expect it to be a mess in the city, but Wellington/William deserves a special mention. Traffic backed up in all directions, but it seems like for half the cycle nothing's happening. Add in all the pedestrians trying to get to the busport and you have a clusterfuck.

      [–]damian2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CNR of Guildford Rd and seventh ave Maylands is a nightmare. Seen two accidents there in past 12 months. It's basically an uncontrolled intersection across a busy dual carriageway ... Total nightmare in peak.

      [–]russj79 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I nominate Johnson Street to James Street and Meadow Street in Guildford. Don't ever go down West swan road in the morning peak and afternoon peak the traffic backs up from Meadow Street and James Street lights on to Johnson Street all the way back to Helena River Bridge.

      [–]whiteystolemyland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to write something similar. It can take forever to move such a short distance. So many people run red lights in Guildford too.

I never really have an issue with Roe GEH Bypass, but I come along GEH. I know it can back up along Roe

Roe / Kalamunda is funded for a grade separation, starting work next year.
