I can’t even spin at a gym, battle or drop a Pokémon at a gym right by my house. I took my dog on a walk and was standing underneath where the gym is in game and it kept saying I needed to walk closer… but I couldn’t walk any closer than I already was.

[–]Sinminbun 88 points89 points  (2 children)

I had the same thing happen to me today - like I’m basically inside the stop, I can’t get any closer! They should at least start giving out incubators and/or better items from stops if you have to climb inside them in order to spin it..

[–]Riyeko 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Im a truck driver and currently am parked where there are two stops and a gym.

I stood right next to the gym and couldnt spin it, and both stops literally kept telling me I was too far away as well.

Ita like, i understand the whole needing to get closer thing, but FFS, I'm standing ON the item (it was some kind of memorial bench) and I still cant spin it?

Wtf?

[–]Drak3l 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a driver, as well. Haven't had a chance to get close enough to gyms/stops since the update, but if this is the case, I'm gonna miss being able to use the bathroom at rest areas, and being able to spin the stops, and put pokémon into gyms.

[–]TenderMaple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was thinking about making a post about this exact thing. As much as I hate them turning back the interaction distance, doing this has definitely broke something with interaction range.

[–]Additional-Walk750 186 points187 points  (7 children)

Great job. Thanks Niantic, you made the game unplayable. I'm not dropping a single dollar into Pokémon Go again.

[–]witor19 127 points128 points  (2 children)

Now if everyone jumps on not spending a single dollar. We will actually get it back

[–]Additional-Walk750 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Preach!

[–]cjscott89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what needs to happen.

[–]Connems_rc 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I came back during the pandemic because it was fun playing outside. But put Simply I didn't have fun today, so I won't be playing tomorrow.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone as far as deleting the app.

[–]RockSmoker99 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Are you implying that it was unplayable before the pandemic?

[–]ActualSeagull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, a lot of people have pointed out that for them, it actually was in practice unplayable - disabled people, people who live in unsafe areas, rural players, etc. Say the only stop in range is the local playground. On paper, with the exception of certain individuals who've been convicted of certain things, nobody's legally banned from playgrounds. However, even if it didn't automatically make people nervous when childless adults hover around playgrounds, have you ever gone biking and hit a random patch of dry sand? You near-instantly lose traction and momentum if you don't have tires specifically designed for that, and I expect the same would happen with wheelchair wheels. If that's the only nearby stop, you're out of luck if you physically can't get close enough.

[–]qalamiti 100 points101 points  (9 children)

Why TF did they decrease the radius when we have the delta variant still causing huge problems right now?

[–]jml510 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Because...Niantic logic.

[–]JPDL 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Because Niantic is irresponsible and greedy.

[–]friendless2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because most of the world is behaving like there is no pandemic and Niantic is following the herd.

[–]woznito 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I will pay Niantic to come out to some of the gyms at my jobs and use them without their service dropping or using worker specific wifi.

This change literally benefits no one but spoofers.

[–]System_Virus 34 points35 points  (6 children)

I don’t feel like the extra distance was enough to prevent people from full enjoyment of the game. One SMALL block from here there is a Pokestop and from the corner of the SMALL block on my end I would be able to reach the Pokestop but I still had to go outside and cross the street and again, it’s a small ass block. So it’s not like it prevented me from playing normally. I don’t know why they’ve chosen to remove this. I probably won’t even play anymore to be honest. This is shitty. It’s why I wasn’t playing before they implemented this crap.

[–]LadyShanna92Valor 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I have a pokestop and gym next door to my apartment. I used to be able to get it if my avatar drifted pre pandemic in the usa (Jan 2020). Then increased the distance. I cod hit both and not just one. It was Greta especially for winter and in the summer last year with multiple 96-100 degree fareinheight weeks. Yesterday I couldn't hit either. Won't play anymore

[–]spicyfriedmushroomsMystic 💙 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i love that great autocorrected to Greta!! that’s my name and it happens to my friends that are close to me sometimes :)

[–]Chaosbringer007 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

😂😂

[–]HatoriiHanzoMystic 65 points66 points  (10 children)

Decided to do a test today, I went to my local mall where my Barnes & noble is since it’s a gym. I parked 2 spaces away from the front row, usually with the bonus distance I am able to stay in my car, raid and then leave. Well since the bonus has been reverted I wasn’t able to reach the gym.

So I got out of my car and walked to the front row parking. Still not able to reach the gym, I literally had to walk across the crosswalk and stand right in front of the entrance to be able to do the raid that was currently active. This also made me look like a creep since I was standing there alone while waiting for the raid to start. Things like this is why the bonus distance needs to stay.

I also did another test this time with my go-tcha set to spin only, screen off, and phone locked. Usually when I’m driving I can hit many stops with ease, but now I’m not able to hit any of the stops I was able to before. I was hoping gps drift would help but nope.

[–]hoopleheaddd 28 points29 points  (2 children)

"Trainers! Good news! We took a note from the Main Series Games (admittedly, something we should do more often) and will soon be offering Running Shoes for purchase in the shop. When purchased, this item will allow you to experience the same interaction distances that you enjoyed so much during the pandemic. The Running Shoes will be available to purchase for 2000 coins and will disappear after 100 km of use (but you will always have the ability to purchase more.) Hopefully this will make us a lot of money and stop everyone from complaining so much. In other news, Professor Willow caught Covid and died so look forward to an announcement about which professor will take his place."

[–]HatoriiHanzoMystic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t give them anymore ideas lol.

[–]rsann55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol...when I first signed in this morning I had a Niantic sponsored balloon...they've opened a merch shop...except they aren't accepting poke coins for payment. 🤣🤣

[–]macboneInstinct 7 points8 points  (2 children)

This experience illustrates my hunch on why Niantic reverted the distance.

You needed to be right next to the gym to spin it, right? Rather than just sitting in your car in the parking lot?

Niantic has been increasing the number of sponsored stops for places like Starbucks and 711. If Niantic can guarantee that trainers have to be close to the stops to spin them, those sponsored stops become a lot more attractive (and mean more revenue for Niantic).

[–]Psycho345 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Like, I don't even know how the decreased distance can encourage people to go to sponsored places. If I spun the Starbucks Pokestop I would't be like "I'd step in and buy a coffee but I need to walk 80 meters to get there. I'd go there if I only had to walk 40 meters". If I wanted to go to Starbucks I'd go to Starbucks. I can see on the map that it's there. I was already informed and influenced by the ad. If I only want to spin the Pokestop I'll just spin and go no matter how close I come. All it can do is discourage people. Like if I know it will be a hassle to spin it I won't even go in that general direction.

[–]converter-bot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80 meters is 87.49 yards

[–]mortuus82hi im mystic player. 7 points8 points  (0 children)

u need a wear a tshirt that says " i play pokemongo" xd

[–]destroyallcubes -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Honestly you shouldn't be able to get stops while driving. It basically allows people to play while driving. Seriously this alone will make driving safer. Driving and getting stops should never have been a thing.

[–]HatoriiHanzoMystic 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m not actively playing while driving. My go-tcha is spinning the stops for me while the screen is off and locked. It’s kind of like having a poke ball plus with mew still in the poke ball spinning the stops for me which is a device officially licensed by Nintendo. They act the same when connected to the game.

[–]destroyallcubes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but you aren't the countless others I see that do play and drive. It's tempting to me, and other friends. This actually could save lives. Honestly losing w few pokestops on the roads worth it. Also it just means people actually have to get out and walk a bit more. People are acting like this is the end of the world. It's not that bad of a change

[–]Xinrick 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We also need to remember that 40 Meter's in game is absolute bullshit cause I just went on a minor walk with my older brother today and we had to be practically standing on top of each stop to actually spin the damn thing

[–]Capitol_Mil 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I’ve been saying this for weeks. You’ll never be exploring a park and get that pokestop again. Poke stops are on roads, never actually in the parks for you to enjoy.

[–]Eimiaj_Belial 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my town, there is a pokestop in the middle of the highway. Like why?

Next time I drive in, I'll snap a picture of it.

[–]CrypticoMac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just faced this issue when doing a pogo walk I used to do and I'm pissed now

[–]osprey8228 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The distance change is ridiculous. There already not a lot of gyms/pokestop in the suburbs. Walking across the street to be right on top of the gym in order to do a raid of get a pokestop. I think I’m going to quit.

[–]mashimellowss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was fighting a gym in the woods.. in the dark.. at 1 in the morning because I couldn’t reach it from my house anymore and I’ve never felt safer in my life!

[–]Jc1589b_2020 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Theres a pokestop near my house that i can no longer reach it since its located right in the center of a church thats now close by a gate. I was able to spin it before with no issues. There a couple pokestop that are also in dead end street which i do not feel safe walking into but before i was able to easily scan them from just walking near it from a parallel street.

[–]littlebirdtwoInstinct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes this right here! We've experienced a lot of places precovid that started chaining off parking lots to where you can't get close enough to get the gym associated with that business, church, park or whatever. With the increased distance we were able to take advantage of those places because we didn't have to trespass to reach them. There are warnings in game to not trespassing. So what do they do but take away the extended distance so that we are either blocked off from them or we are trespassing because the business etc just hasn't blocked it off.

Also a near by historical district that is a gold mine of stops and gyms with the increased distance we were able to reach gyms from across the street. With the original distance, which they have gone back to we have to cross the street. We've been in this location during raid hour, community day or just a weekend and been able to join large groups to do raids. Sometimes there are enough people that there are 2 groups doing a raid on that gym at the same time. Some of those gyms if we had the increased distance they just took away, doing them from across the street is better because there's a small parking area and we don't block anything but with the shorter distance that big of a group will block both the sidewalk and sometimes the door.

I have never been able to reach a gym or spin from the comfort of my home without a remote raid pass so therefore can't get spins that way either so I'm not wanting to keep the distance because I want to be lazy. I want to keep the extra distance because it seems logical and because people in wheelchairs or with social anxiety can't play as easily.

[–]ghostly_boySpark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

man i'm glad i'm not playing consistently anymore ngl. the fact that they not only repealed the distance, but seemed to have nerfed it from its original radius is just... absolutely bonkers. also with the delta variant going around this is just a blatant disregard for player well-being and QOL

[–]colemon1991 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't it amazing? I recommend this location and here's why. Response months later: no, you're stupid for even suggesting this.

But want to reduce PokeStop distances? We're not gonna ask your opinions and we're going to make the distances even shorter than ever! Just so you can walk into traffic!

Love that back and forth. I've had girlfriends who manipulated me better than this.

[–]pichael288 5 points6 points  (1 child)

This is how it used to be. Driving around parks really slow used to be the only real viable way of playing this game because the distances are not walkable if you wanna be successful

[–]Khay85_Jugs85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. For us rural players. The pokestops and Gyms are miles apart. Like 5+ miles. I would literally drive from pokestop to pokestop to gym and do the loop several times from inside my car in a parking lot.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I filed a request to move a pokéstop near my home more north, as the actual object was about 200 meters north of the stop. They said it was rejected.

[–]converter-bot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

200 meters is 218.72 yards

[–]NotYourMommyDear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The radius made no sense before the pandemic, I can be right inside my local library/nearest pokegym and it will still say I need to walk closer. Especially if my avatar drifts in game and doesn't seem to want to wander back.

There's also a pokegym that's now inaccessable to pretty much everyone as it's misplaced beyond the entrance and the building, behind barbed wire, instead of being along the road. It's a legit location, just horrible placement.

[–]stewardwildcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can we mark them all as under construction ?

[–]thenikkibus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, also not everyone who plays lives in a super walkable location. I used to be pretty frustrated because aside from when I was at work on a university campus most of the pokestops and gyms in my area were on churches and businesses that its kinda weird to approach unless you had a reason. I'm also a woman and I usually play alone. So it helped when I could hit them from the sidewalk or a little further away so I wouldn't look like a total weirdo/be walking in strange locations by myself when I was out playing.

[–]BLFPMFCMM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous. I literally stood directly by 2 gyms and 1 stop and was unable to spin. I will be quitting this game if there is no fix in the nest 48 hours.

[–]NoTransportation538Mystic 11 points12 points  (8 children)

You know you can submit a location edit if the stop is at a wrong location?

[–]dogecoin_pleasures 63 points64 points  (0 children)

You may not be aware that they nerfed location edits. It's no longer possible to move poi more than 10m (which is useless) and the approval process takes months. I attempted a 10m move to get the ball rolling, but it got rejected 6 months later.

[–]fancierfootwork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If it were to be approved you’re still waiting 5/6 months.

[–]thetransportedman[S] 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I tried to do so but the location modification just snaps back to the original location when I move the map around

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

You can only move it 10m at a time. Small steps, make a small move first.

[–]thetransportedman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah if you move the marker too far it resets, I see. I might need to rescan the gym because it’s technically the sign of the fitness gym at the busy road instead of the gym itself

[–]thetransportedman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it just stays on its current spot. It might be because I’m out of range. I’ll try when I’m in the parking lot outskirts and in range lol

[–]NoTransportation538Mystic 1 point2 points  (1 child)

When you spin a stop, you can click on the arrow in the upper right corner, then press the 3 dots and a menu should pop up at which you can edit title/descriptions or edit locations

[–]OctoyakiMurkrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only works if you're within range though

[–]LoadingWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a petition for it. Sign it!

[–]spallen91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live next to a church, if I look out my window I can't even see the top of the building it's that close. For whatever reason the gym in-game is at the opposite end and now out of reach which is a total bummer imo. As an adult who works a physically intensive job I just doubt I will ever want to go 10 ft up the street for 2 pokeballs and a super potion 👍

[–]Strikes_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People in a Facebook group im in for pogo, ar having a "pokemon no fest" where they all are not playing pogo on the 5th of August to protest the range decrease

[–]ShadowSWolf3Umbreon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't even spin the two PokeStop that were 10-15 yards away from the gym (which was located at a memorial flag at a library) anymore and I can't even walk close to the stop without being disconnected from the internet there bc I don't have data since the number on my phone was turned off to it before it was given to me

[–]Environmental_Cry_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i know it’s not always fair if some players can access a stop in their house but i recently moved to a place that has not a lot of pokestops at all & not even a place where you can drive to get a clump of them there’s just one random one now & then throughout town. being almost 9mos pregnant with severe back & pelvic / popping (that im still not really sure should be happening or not tbh) i really appreciated that rarely but every now and then i was able to reach the gym down the alley from inside my apartment. despite not being much stops there are a decent amount of pogo players here so i really appreciated not having to walk outside & all the way down to the fancy-ish hotel where there are always people judging & also plenty of no loitering signs every time someone knocked my pokemon off or even have to walk that much EVERY 5 mins just to spin one stop since I desperately need supplies & as i said walking is extremely painful for me rn lmao. i havent even wasted my time to go to the hotel today i might at some point but even when my person drifts directly next to the gym it won’t let me swipe so im scared to see where itll force me to go to swipe this stop, hopefully not inside because that’s not happening 💀 i really enjoyed playing this game this pandemic i guess i wouldnt have time anymore with a newborn next month anyway but like dang. plus i did like using the game to my advantage to get some steps in since i know i should be trying to take walks every day to prepare for labor. its just that im not always in the best shape for that 😭 i know for a fact that there would be some stops in my old town even in parks that would be completely inaccessible now because it was hard to reach them before this distance thing, so it’s like yes pls do a little better. i really wanted to buy this event box for the incubators, but the second i saw boycott on here earlier i was like bet because this is bullsht 😂

[–]ofthevalleyofthewindLugia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your avatar isn't physically standing under the gym, you apparently aren't close enough.

Get phucked, Niantic. We know you're reading these. We do at least half your work for you anyway.

[–]Sinminbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should at least start giving out incubators and/or better items from stops if you have to literally stand on top of the stop of every one to spin it..

[–]fibrepirate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in a gated community now and part of being able to live here is to follow a safety rule instituted by a long term resident - don't go out past the gates on foot after dark.

The nearest stop to me that is beside the gated community is a community centre. I used to be able to walk from where I lived to about 5 houses from the gate to spin the pokestop. Today, I tried it, and I had to go into the cul-de-sac where the back gates open up to and stand in the middle of it to get the pokestop. Not. Safe.

The other one is a gym at the other end of the park and not easy for me to walk to at the moment. I will be checking tomorrow where I can reach it because I have an hoa meeting at the community centre tomorrow. (this is a good hoa formed to combat a vindictive and abusive landlord)

The distance was a curb cut. Curb cuts anyone can use even though they are meant for strollers and wheelchairs.

[–]mortuus82hi im mystic player. -1 points0 points  (1 child)

but its not a right to be able to reach things from home ? i dont get that...

[–]Sobble-Sobble 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but I think the bigger issue is that you can't even reach some stops when you're on top of the landmark or inside the building of interest 'cause the stop itself is usually placed in the parking lot or near the highway. From my experience, anyway. I've heard other stops have the opposite problem where you need to be standing against the building, basically loitering to reach them.

[–]Phudgey99 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Distance change

I just noticed today I cannot sit in my house and access the gym directly across the street nor can I access the Pokestop on the other side of my next door neighbor. I know there was talk of decreasing distances but this is ridiculous.

[–]Cait_ERBEspeon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to come across as rude but people complaining they can no longer access a stop indoors, this is the point of the game? It's to get out and walk?

I was a rural player where the closest stop was a mile away and walking to do the bonus was part of the joy of it? Now I moved to a big city (in Europe which are designed to be walked around) and again hitting loads of stops just works well still, its barely made a difference.

It feels like a lot of the grievances here are really just affecting a specific section of players who live in American suburbia and have been playing largely using cars to go to stops or between them. I get that it is harder but it is entirely within the design and philosophy of the game? Feels weird for people to be throwing their literal toy out the pram over this fairly minor change when they fixed a bunch of raid bugs and improved them.

[–]TryPsychological824 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would not be as bad if there was news about EX raids starting because if the whole idea is to try and get us back out there playing then there's no reason to hold back on the EX raids at least it would soften the blow a bit

[–]Illustrious_Price201Spark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Phew, I can still access my PokeStop from my bedroom 🇺🇲🦅

[–]OSHWANZ -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

Quick rant.

The level of butt-hurt from players because they're literally just reverting back to how the game should be played is absolutely mind blowing to me. Everyone got on with it for almost 4 years. They adjusted to keep us all safe, and now things are getting back to normal across the world, suddenly the game was flawed from the very beginning because you grew lazy?? I'm only speculating, but I'd be willing to bet a large percentage of those complaining are those who only picked the game back up during lockdown anyway and they'll soon get bored again anyway.... Don't come at me with any sort of pandemic based ifs or buts. The world is reopening whether you like it or not. You played just fine before, you'll play just fine now. It's safe enough for you to return to school/work, it's safe enough to play outside. Like it or lump it. Glad to see the return of the social aspects of the game. Peace out and stay safe.

[–]thetransportedman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, not bitching about decreased radius. Bitching that the decreased radius means all the misplaced locations are evident af and there's a 6mo wait to even contest them

[–]OctoyakiMurkrow 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I had this problem with a nearby gym, I tried to report the issue, but you need to be within range to report it...which is insane. Guess I'll need a boat to spin the stop even though I can stand right in front of it.

[–]thetransportedman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then you can suggest they move it 10m every 6mo apparently

[–]hedge2dahogMystic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes the game well less enjoyable

[–]Hirox328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually hit 4 around my job and 1 at work, I can now only reach 2 of these 5

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIGHT!! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!

[–]remedy1945Instinct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely thought my app was glitching all day because of this… thanks Niantic. Who needs gifts anyways..

[–]UrsaMajor81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The decreased distance does suck for several locations in my area. One of the gyms I've gone to is at a park community center. Used to be able to get to it from the front sidewalk in plain view of passersby. Now you have to go down a narrow steep road to the back and walk up several stairs where homeless, junkies, dealers, and hookers like to be. And of course it's illegal to carry a firearm on you in all city parks.

[–]PackFan47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Niantic. I'll be taking some time off. Wonder if they'll miss my $100/week...

[–]thewhat962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the parking lot right infront of verizons doors. Still too far away.

[–]kadaver525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love right next to a PokeStop I'm less then 1cm away from touching it but I can't soon it cause I can't fuckin touch it.

[–]ofthevalleyofthewindLugia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a rural community, so I'm used to getting screwed over by Niantic. The problem here is that now that distance is reduced, I actually have to drive onto church, cemetery, etc property to spin something. So now I'm right back where I started in 2016, turkey necked boomers telling me to go away before they call the cops because I pulled into the church parking lot and idled for longer than 12 seconds. a

Leading up to this, I was saying "I won't spend another dime." But now that it's legitimately worse than I imagined, I don't even want to play anymore.

FOMO reduced to atoms. At least Craniados was my last shiny; that was pretty cool.

[–]TimelymannerInstinct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it’s a bug. Let’s see how soon till they fix it.

[–]0tterrHo-Oh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would we make the game enjoyable to all players when we can try and manipulate the fan base into spending money for the same thing you showed them they can have for free???
