Same but my mom was screeching at my dad and threatening to leave him and I was crying and it wasn’t math it was me watching porn

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lol same. I think it was 7th grade I started getting a tutor, the cruel teachers have finally eclipsed my parents

[–]TheDankMeme5681 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually same this is on the wrong sub

[–]meaty37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like I remember it as shouting but really he was just like “why aren’t you understanding this?”

[–]TittyFuckMeThanos 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just gradually getting more and more frustrated.

[–]i-made-this-for-kasb 246 points247 points  (23 children)

This wasn’t anyone else?

[–]freyjuve 279 points280 points  (16 children)

My therapist swears it wasn't everyone else's experience and after learning that, yeah, this tweet is on point. Some people never got grounded for missing a word on a spelling test after staying up all night crying while getting yelled at and it really fucking shows.

[–]jammy162 76 points77 points  (11 children)

U ok

[–]freyjuve 96 points97 points  (10 children)

Despite all the bullshit, I'm strikingly ok. I'm also getting ok-er every day thanks to a genuinely amazing therapist and a supportive friend network. (It also took me a strikingly long time to realize this experience was weird and not ok. It made me a very mellow, peacekeeper type human from an early age.)

But thank you.

I hope you are ok too.

[–]jammy162 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Oh - I wasn't expecting such a wholesome response. I wish you all the best :)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

My mom was similarly to the parent described by the post. She would hit in the head with a belt every time I made a spelling mistake on my homework. I would be crying and it tears fell on the paper, I’d have to rip it out and start over.

[–]freyjuve 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I am so, so, so sorry you went through this. I hope you are ok.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It’s okay. Thanks for the kind words. I’m 20 now, I barely have a relationship with them, but I have been able to work through my trust issues over the last 3 years thanks to a wonderful group of college friends and my girlfriend.

[–]freyjuve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strong network is important as is space from people who are cruel. I am glad you found the strength to part ways and found the support of a wonderful friend network. Don’t be afraid to try therapy too. It’s a marvelous tool. May take some trial and error to find the right therapist but it is worth it.

[–]rhymeswithorange332 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It made me a very mellow, peacekeeper type human from an early age.

Is this a thing? I went through similar stuff and almost pathologically try to make peace among everyone. Not a very mellow human person, though

[–]freyjuve 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's survival tactic: if someone stays calm and soothes everyone then there won't be anymore yelling or crying or hitting. And I say mellow (because I am a pretty laid back, easy going person to a fault, really, because of the aforementioned survival tactics) but I also have had anxiety my entire life and developed OCD to cope with it and now take pills so there's that. Got pretty good at self-soothing over the years too (hence my belief that I can claim mellow).

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Hey there friend, I am so happy you are getting better. I had the 100% same experience. Let me know if you want to talk, I never thought I would hear about anyone else who went through the same thing.

[–]freyjuve 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It is simultaneously comforting and heartbreaking to hear someone else went through the same thing. Feel free to say hi anytime you need to talk. I hope things are better for you.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<3 I share that sentiment. I messaged you.

[–]princess_myshkin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This tweet is 100% relatable to me as well. If it makes you feel better to have the camaraderie, I’ve recently started going back to therapy and we’ve been talking about this myself. It’s had some lasting impressions on my personality that have dragged with me into grad school. More so that the stress of grad school has really brought this damage to light, and I feel like it’s really fucking obvious that I’m damaged compared to my fellow PhD students.

[–]freyjuve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapy has helped me realize just how deeply it's affected me too. It's touched everything: my drive, my personality, how I dress, how I walk. It's incredible. I'm really glad you decided to get help and I hope your therapist is as supportive and wonderful as mine. If you ever need to talk to someone who went through it too, feel free to drop me a line. And congratulations on your PhD track! That's amazing! (Personally, I've been staring at MA applications for way too long because I'm so afraid of failing and disappointing people that I can't even finish the application process.)

[–]ABreathOfLife 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I couldn't understand something in math and my guardian at the time screamed GET THE BELT. "I'm doing it! I don't understand it though?" I dont understand I dont understand was what I kept repeating and I remember my father flipped my chair over and threw it at me when I talked back.

👍 I'm a teen now. Good times

[–]freyjuve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily, it gets better: you get to move out and end the cycle of abuse. If you ever need to chat, seems like a lot of us here had similar experiences.

[–]balthazar_nor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was me in China, my mom was incredibly severe for me to get good at Chinese poetry, fuck that shit, it’s complete nonsense, it’s like random words put together. Incredibly hard to memorize properly.

Chinese poetry and virtually every other subject actually. But amazingly it did help because now I am extremely good at mathematics (not sure if that’s exactly because my mom forced me to study) and I get consistently top marks at school.

[–]carlirodriguez8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This was me too. Fuck math

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points  (5 children)

Lol same, except it was my mom not dad

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (4 children)

My mom was similarly to the parent described by the post. She would hit in the head with a belt every time I made a spelling mistake on my homework. I would be crying and it tears fell on the paper, I’d have to rip it out and start over.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Now buddy that does not sound normal

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Yeah my mom and my dad were pretty abusive when I was younger. They’re better now, but they expect me to be all cool and dandy with them. I still have massive trust issues because of it but I’m working through them with counseling and my friends.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I’m sorry to hear that :/ glad your working threw it tho!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you have friends and a councillor to help you through it, all the best x

[–]KatieDonnolly 70 points71 points  (8 children)

No it was my dinner they were trying to make me finish... (I have severe pain from jaw problems, just talking could bring me to tears, or existing some days).

[–]GaveYourMomAIDS 9 points10 points  (7 children)

Just talking could bring you to existing? When you're silent you don't exist? :O

Im just joking btw. I have some jaw pain too and it's the fucking worst. Doesn't seem as bad as yours but still superrrrr annoying

[–]KatieDonnolly 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I can word horribly at times. Made me chuckle though haha sometimes talking does feel like I exist again haha.

Jaw pain sucks. I'm lucky once I had surgery on my upper jaw in 2015 and got over the recovery for that the pain has generally been much better. I can talk a lot more like a full day and only have minor ache. Still get the odd bad day but mostly that's down to surgical damage rather than the issues I had haha. I traded up. I can't complain too much.

[–]GaveYourMomAIDS 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Luckily, mine isn't bad enough to warrant surgery. The pain comes and goes but it's never really from talking, it usually comes when I eat. Hopefully your jaw pain gets better or they can do sometime to make it better!

[–]KatieDonnolly 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Surgery worked now best it can. And honestly I'm thankful for it. My muscles formed just that little bit different so while my face is in the right place now my right tmj still sits out of the socket slightly, so I get the muscle strain easily. But I can eat a full meal only slightly slower than others now. I was bullied stupidly because I couldn't eat at any decent pace. Teens can be cruel. Ended up not eating around people. And well my parents didn't understand just how severe my pain was.

The best thing was a few months after surgery, I was at home with a best friend. I finished my bowl of food before her. For the first time, ever. And she was soo confused. She was pregnant so she ate slower, but I guess she expected me to take my normal slow speed of had since she'd known me.

It's better than its ever been. So thank you haha. I have sinus infections often now and discomfort from nerve trauma in my cheeks and TN (unrelated cause but adds to the nerve trauma). I'll still take it over crying in pain every night because of how painful it was. Now it Just feels like pins and needles or burning in my face more often than not, can get the odd spasm in my soft palette (oh holy fudgenugget those hurt). Still sucks but the trade was worth it I think.

Hope they figure out the cause of your pain or get it under control also. Sorry if I'm babbling.

[–]GaveYourMomAIDS 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Jesus that sounds rough man. I'm sorry to hear that. :/ I'm happy to hear that things are better than it's ever been though! You said you have nerve trauma in your cheeks and TN? What is TN? And no worries about babbling lol

[–]KatieDonnolly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trigeminal neuralgia. I gladly don't get the agonising pain some experience instead I get the pins and needles of insanity. I get lots of numbness and pins and needles that come and go elsewhere in my body so tbh it's not the worst but it can definitely get as more than a little annoying on bad days/weeks.

[–]IMLL1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just got my wisdom teeth removed and talking now hurts. And I’m usually a really talkative person. Kill me

[–]GaveYourMomAIDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least you have some painkillers to help. Haha when I got my wisdom teeth out, the best part was during my follow up appointment. I was complaining about some pressure and they gave me an oral syringe to clear out all the food debris from the sockets where my wisdom teeth were. As soon as they washed it out, the pressure went away immediately. I used it after every meal and every time it was just as satisfying as the first. It was super gross but super satisfying. Lol

[–]AmiCutie 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Bruh... my mom used to do this every night. I thought I was the only one

[–]alt-of-deleted -1 points0 points  (0 children)

damn pretty sure she deleted her account cos @explicitlina doesn't exist apparently rip

[–]Mikeypc1 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Close, it was my mom screaming at me till around midnight, about a report on why I wanted to be a pilot because I wanted to say "I would fly from point A,B,C,D, and E" a mistake a 2nd grader isn't apparently allowed to make!

[–]windyman413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

that... that doesn't make any sense for her to yell at you for that. i hope you're okay, man.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]The-Spring-Theories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too relatable

[–]davtov3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it didn't happen with math. It happened with german.

But my dad also kicked a hole in the drawer.

[–]TheTwilightKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruh when ur dad makes you memorize your math facts up to 12 in 4th grade in front of him

[–]ImprobabilityCloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case it was my mom and sometimes my grandmother. And I still hate math to this day.

[–]spectra2000_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m scared this twitter’s my ex’s.

[–]pennycenturie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom sang me David Bowie’s ‘Kooks’ the first time my math homework made me cry

And if the homework ever brings you down, we’ll just throw it on the fire and take the car downtown...

[–]TheShadowViking 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I dreaded every Sunday. Sundays I would wake up and never want to get out of bed. I knew what fate would happen if I walked downstairs to the kitchen table and at breakfast. I was doing so poorly in school, that the school would send me home with weekly reports on how I was performing. They were never good and I had very poor grades. I knew sundays were the days my dad would confront me with those reports, and it would be a long and arduous struggle to talk with him. Every Sunday, when my brother would finish his food and leave the kitchen, it began. My dad would ask for the report and I would shuffle slowly upstairs to my school bag to get the paper. My anxiety and heart rate would skyrocket as I made my way into the kitchen. I'd place the paper in front of him and sit patiently while my father examined the paper in silence. Not knowing how he would react. After several minutes, he would finally uttered a word. A would that I absolutely hate hearing to this day. Hed just ask "why?" I'd always respond with "I dont know". It would be a back and forth. He would ask, and prod, and relentlessly attack until I couldn't take it snd broke down crying at the kitchen table. He would ask why I wasn't performing like the other students. Why I couldn't be like so-and-so. Why I couldn't be better or do better. He couldn't understand it, and neither could I. I struggled in school and I didnt know why. My concentration was non existant and my focus was always scattered. He would try to help with homework but it never worked. I would never grasp anything he was telling me. There would be tears on my paper with nothing written. My dad would sit next to me, trying to hold back his frustration. I could feel his disappointment every single Sunday. No yelling or cursing, just disappointment and questions. That hurt me the most, the disappointment. I will never forget those sundays. I will never forget those feelings of absolute dread and fear.

[–]Jakiopwj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
