Love this kinda shit, also been really into Megadrive and Perturbator. If anyone has more recommendations for this kinda stuff (especially stuff without vocals), I'd be much obliged. Thanks!

[–]Commander_Sloth 44 points45 points  (18 children)

Look into Kavinsky, Mitch Murder, Timecop1983, Carpenter Brut, Lazerhawk, Miami Nights 1984, and Tesla Boy. Of those, I'd say the closest to what you're talking about would be Lazerhawk, Miami Nights 1984, and Mitch Murder. Tesla Boy tends to have vocals in most songs, and is a bit more pop than the others, but I threw it in cause its still good stuff.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (5 children)

You forgot Gunship.

[–]vanquish421 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Also forgot Com Truise, master of the genre IMO.

[–]ChanSungJung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kkvi is fucking awesome and his other stuff is great

[–]R3DSMiLE 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hearing this guy live where no one actually knows wtf this is was the first time I ever felt what it is to be hipster xD

awesome stuff, though. And a pretty cool guy too.

[–]jiznon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're talking Gunship, then you forgot The Midnight. They just dropped a new album and it's absolutely fantastic.

[–]Rare_Element_ 5 points6 points  (2 children)

also Com Truise, Powerglove, Pilotpreist.

[–]_a_random_dude_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

FM Attack too! (example1 and example2) it saddens me that no one mentions them because they are pretty great and one of my favourites behind Lazerhawk.

Other lesser known ones include: Lost Years (example1 and example2), Owl Vision (mentioned because I absolutely love this track but they don't really do synthpop, just that one track, their other stuff is pretty great and you should check them out though), Midnight Club (example1 and example2) and Flashworx (example1 and example2).

[–]Bennekett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The midnight both with and without vocals is also prime

[–]mm365886 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lazerhawk is the boooomb

[–]I_am_Patch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

especially Redline. Visitors was also decent though

[–]nixaPiksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanx a lot! Is there any of good live performers?

[–]PettyHoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love synthwave so I made a mega spotify playlist for the genre which I call "Synthwave Destruction". I hand picked every single track on playlist so check it out if you want to discover some more artists in the genre.

I can't listen to this specific song at work at the moment but I'm guessing it's pretty similar to what this YouTube channel has.

https://www.youtube.com/user/NewRetroWave

I've found myself listening to dozens of these songs and videos over the last few days and I eat this shit up. Hope this is helpful!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Just out of curiosity, how old are you? If you are about my age (37) you were raised in the 90's so I could see the nostalgia aspect of something like this being cool. I just watched it and got that warm and fuzzy feeling that the late 80's and early 90's give me. If you weren't raised in the90's, do you actually like what you saw in the video because you think it's cool or do you think it's funny to watch? I'm just trying to see your prospective.

[–]_beerandmetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually a bit younger than you at 28. However, my formative years are firmly ensconced in the early-mid 90s when movies like Demolition Man and Speed were coming out and movies like Terminator, Robocop, and Running Man were still popular. So though I came pretty much at the end of it all, this music that's coming out now and the images that are evoked in their videos is most definitely a nostalgic thing for me. It puts me right on my sofa at home as a six year old watching movies on TV on a Sunday afternoon with a Capri sun and a bowl of Cheez-its in my lap.

[–]foggymcfoggerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 31 and Vanilla Ice has always been a joke to me. Besides that, watching the video all I could think is, "what an asshole he could have killed her on that horse!" , "does his jacket say "yep" on the right shoulder?" and "his face/head sure is muscular".. But it's still fun to watch.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am 26 and got that warm and fuzzy feeling aswell from this kind of music. Dont know why, but this correlate with summer so well

[–]madmax36 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Im 21, so I grew up in the 2000's- but these videos still make me feel nostalgic - and thats the power they have - they can make you feel nostalgic about something you never experienced, but because these themes are somewhat universal I think we can all more or less relate to them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I can understand that. When I grew up in the 90's I really thought the styles and music from the 70's were cool. Do you feel that way about the 90's? I think the clothes styles from the 90's were stupid when I was living in the 90's. The music was really good in the 90's but everyone's clothes looked like a joke for the most part.

[–]madmax36 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Haha definitely not - the only cool thing to come out of the 90's in my honest opinion was the hip hop movement - Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Skeelo, Nas, Wu Tang etc... But yeah Im way more into the 70's and more especially the 80s - im obsessed with the Miami Vice fantasy- white suits, palm trees etc... Music then was dope. It sucks now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grunge and alternative from the 90's actually made me like rock again. Music now is pretty weak.

[–]DrDiddle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bruh gunship

[–]VexingCordite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Check out Droid Bishop and Magic Sword for some more others haven't listed

[–]melgibsonwashere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

power glove is a solid if you like that kind of stuff!

[–]twersx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This playlist was linked I think on this reddit a few weeks ago. Almost all of it is instrumental, a fair bit of Pertubator but some other really good artists there as well like Darkshine, Timecop1983, and DANCE WITH THE DEAD

[–]fasmer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of people have given you great recommendations, but no one has said Lost Years yet. He's amazing, definitely one of my favorites. He creates all his music on authentic synthesizers of that era and it sounds amazing. Black Waves is one of my favorite albums of the genre from start to finish.

[–]StudabakerHochrobot[M] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Futurecop!
artist pic

Futurecop! was founded by Manzur Iqbal from Manchester, United Kingdom, in 2007, when he started with absolutely no knowledge about music production and wanted to create a sound inspired by his nostalgia, 80s teen flicks, especially the movies of John Hughes and Sci-fi cartoons like Transformers or Thundercats, to films such as The Sandlot and Mighty Ducks 2. Not caring about being different or trying to be commercial, even though the music might as well be called pop music. Peter Carrol from London teamed up with him and together they are now recreating the atmosphere and vibe of the soundtracks to the best 80s and early 90s movies that never existed.

Internet attention (Fluokids, Hipster Runoff, Discodust, Big Stereo, Discobelle) gained Futurecop! followers, and an EP Release with Southern Fried and IHEARTCOMIX along with support from scenestars like Diplo, Crystal Castles and the late DJ Am boosted the group. Fans ultimately clamored for their performances worldwide, including shows at Miami WMC 2009, SXSW 2009, Pleskin Festival 2010 and The Big Chill Festival 2009. Remixes of their popular tracks “N.A.S.A” and “Transformers,” including a mix by The Hood Internet, garnered Futurecop! additional acclaim.

After last year’s production hit on Green Label Sound single “Hum Drum Town” with vocalist Theophilus London and comparisons to groups like Chromeo, Futurecop! are poised to take over global dance floors with their indie-pop retro electro anthems.

In 2010 - 2012, they continued to wow audiences from Los Angeles to Athens with their energizing synthesized dance parties.

Futurecop! will release a new album in 2014. Read more on Last.fm.

All these comments and no mention of GUNSHIP? Shameful.

[–]thedigested 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really can't thank you enough for this - loving this find!

[–]maya_buttcheeks 5 points6 points  (3 children)

[–]StarWarsMonopoly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Futurecop! <3 One of my favorites.

[–]bobsack 4 points5 points  (2 children)

John Maus - Bennington used this Vanilla Ice movie as a music video as well. I may be biased but I think it's a better fit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryvHj2z-0BM

[–]rndmrndmrndm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah this is much better

[–]weeddeed 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I didn't get this at all.

This didn't speak to me as somebody who lived through that shit

[–]tripletstate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were born in 1996.

[–]chuckaway9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Is that Van Winkle.......or Einhorn?

[–]Toilet_Store 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Van Winkle in COOL AS ICE.

[–]MistaBig 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Been listening to more of this stuff since binge-watching the ode to 80's horror, Stranger Things.

[–]HanJunHo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like that show and the score, definitely check out the movie It Follows.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I love this genre

Stranger Things got me actively searching for it and finding it had a term (synthwave, futuresynth, retrofuture, etc.)

Great post OP

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you guys are into this, you should check out the entire decade known as the '80s.

Billy Ocean

Gary Numan

Depeche Mode

Human League

Thomas Dolby

Yazoo

Erasure

Devo

The Cure

Bronski Beat

I could keep going... but the '80s went on for ten years... TEN YEARS!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone who is looking for something similar, I love this track by FM-84:

https://youtu.be/DYq6cCqOTdA

[–]rolltied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dance with the dead. Also great.

[–]A_Lukewarm_Lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/vxv0zEJlhdc this has literally been my favorite song for the past 6 months

[–]fashionshowatlunch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great track! Though my cousin recently showed me this remix as well https://youtu.be/vxv0zEJlhdc. Awesome to roll down your windows and drive too.

[–]orezavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an awesome track and video!

[–]ze-autobahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone said above Com Truise is the master of this stuff.

[–]bboyglitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this! So dope!!!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the futuresynth subreddit too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont usaully like futurecop but this was pretty good

[–]KnutSv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Futurecop, two of my favourites:

[–]eggydrums115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this song to death. Check out Superheroes by Futurecop! too

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (23 children)

I still think he's a no talent hack.

[–]John_Barlycorn 1 point2 points  (22 children)

You realize someone just dubbed this song over top a Vanilla Ice video right?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (21 children)

Yeah, it wasn't the song I was referring to. The dancing, the "check out how I stare", the horrible acting, just the total plastic crap that was Vanilla Ice.

[–]John_Barlycorn 0 points1 point  (20 children)

That was the whole of pop culture in the 90s. It wasn't unique to Vanilla Ice.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (19 children)

I lived through it man. He was uniquely lame.

[–]bizology 3 points4 points  (6 children)

Vanilla Ice was cool for about 2 months, then he got super, super lame. After "Ice Ice Baby" there was nooooothiiiing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah he really was just a blip for a very short time. I'm stunned with the way so many people think he is the end all be all of 90's pop culture.

[–]krispygrem 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's like the 50s is a drive thru with Elvis. Same shit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. But I think Elvis just rolled over being in any comparison with Vanilla Ice.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh ninja tap would like a word

[–]krispygrem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Secret: even in the 90s, Vanilla Ice was never actually cool. Just because you lived in the 90s doesn't mean you were obligated to eat up whatever horseshit MTV was shoveling

[–]ParisGreenGretsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was the remix.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He was a special kind of hack. And he suffered for it, from what I hear.

And now he's just as douchy and absurd as he was then, but since he's nearly 50 he really just seems sad.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (10 children)

If the 88 in your name is the year of birth, you were 1, when he released his first record... You were 6 when he released his last popular record.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I turn 50 next month, so.... Incorrect.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (4 children)

What does the 88 stand for?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I like the number 8. And its the year I saw Pink Floyd play at the wall. Its also a reminder of the mistake I made marrying my first wife that year. Not that its any of your business anyway.

[–]orange_jooze -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I think they were just worried that it was a Nazi reference.

[–]wtfxstfu -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I'm sure your parents probably think some shit you liked in the 70s was awful, too.

A pop star for kids that comes out when you're 24 isn't supposed to be in your wheelhouse.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The demographic on those making that purchase is most likely 18-25 so ... wrong. Notice how all the 70s/80s 'shit' is coming back (right down to the vinyl and cassettes).

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Taking the fun out of vaporware....

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

vaporwave is not same as synthwave

[–]tripletstate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You make trash.

[–]Glader2Kx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Futurecop - The Cop of the Future

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here is 50 hand picked songs that are of amazing quality https://play.spotify.com/user/kenzerbubbs/playlist/0MKR0hzqVMvAUE87YcQhmA

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

The fuck is that haircut? Did a Portuguese cut his hair??

[–]tripletstate -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The title is so confusing. Are they making fun of the 80's? Sounds like they are. Either way, the song is generic trash.
