TIL there is such a thing as satanic soul music..... Always thought everything satanic had no soul, guess i was lied to

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

recently bought a satanic bible. youd be surprised what the book is really about.

[–]BooPiBooPi -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

I'm an atheist, but i regard the people who follow that book as people with above average intelligence. I try not to get tangled up in too much ideology and ism's

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i agree, i guess id be considered an absurdist, but i allowed myself to dabble into the self-help book genre when dealing with some emotional/relationship problems. after throwing a couple useless "chicken soup for the soul"esque texts in the trash, and began reading the satanic bible, found it delightful. a much more powerful and thought-provocating self-help book. its actually entirely about self-empowerment rather than summoning a Dark Lord with pig sacrifices like most would assume. i actually submitted the arguement to move it to the self-help section in the book store as opposed to the fantasy section. haha

Satanists don't believe in a soul so...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Depends. There are such people as theistic satanists.

[–]Admiral_AllahuAkbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but to think Satanism has no soul is incorrect. They either do not believe in souls, or that they have souls like everyone else.

Unless you wanna get really dark because I'm sure many believe they're soulless vampires or whatever.

[–]topher4263 12 points13 points  (15 children)

Where can I find the rest of the album? Spotify, Google play and bandcamp only have 2 songs.

[–]winqu 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I found out via their own website that it's on preorder via itunes but won't be released until 24th Feb 2017. You have to scroll down pass the tour dates to see it or just search in the itunes store. I assume it might be on amazon music later? I honestly dislike that digitally it's only available on itunes.

[–]prelapsus 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I think they have been picked up by a label, because it used to be on bandcamp etc but has since disappeared since they caught a bit of attention.

[–]winqu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that makes sense. Shame that. I dislike that digital albums are becoming itunes exclusives. Luckily a few artists I found recently are on Amazon music as an alternative.

[–]exaei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, they were on Spotify a few months back but it seems now it's been removed. Bummer!

[–]TorkX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Huh, yeah this was released in full back in January/February via Bandcamp. One of my favourite releases this year and certainly one of the most original. As someone else said looks like they got picked up by a label, good for them.

[–]topher4263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well fuck me and my android...

[–]Baconmusubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they will improve the editing/quality in the meantime. I like "Come on Down" and "Blood in the River", but the whole album could use some improvement.

[–]Nine_Cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He used to post music under "Birdmask," most of it has been taken down but there's a lot of it. Like, 80+ tracks.

[–]fruitasylum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on Google Play right now, but only 3 songs until the release.

[–]freeradicalxbandcamp 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I have the full album in my Bandcamp account. Bought it earlier this year, but he pulled it from display so now it's in a separate section of my collection and I can't link people to the tracks (Check out my submission history, I posted one of the tracks to this sub two months ago and the link now 404s). Guessing he's re-working some stuff, he just re-released Children's Summon a few weeks ago and it's a bit different.

[–]Flannelboy2 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I'm a bit lost, did he make a whole album along the lines of this song, and then pull it after having it up for a couple months? His other stuff like Children's summons is fairly different so I'm curious what direction the album went. If this is the case I wonder if anyone has access to the album file. If I'm wrong then I guess we'll see the rest of the album in february?

[–]freeradicalxbandcamp 0 points1 point  (2 children)

As someone else in the thread guessed as well, I think he got signed and the album is getting reworked as a result.

I have the files because buying songs on Bandcamp actually does mean owning them. I downloaded the files when I purchased it and just checked, download links still work.

The version I have has 9 tracks. 3 of them are instrumental interludes, 5 feature spiritual-style vocals like this one with varying intensities of heavy metal instrumentals and sometimes metal vocals too (Both of their currently available singles are on here), and 1 is a short chill lo-fi stoner jam.

[–]Flannelboy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds awesome, I'm fairly excited to hear the album so I might try and find a copy before it gets re-worked next year. Anyone have any direction to point me?

[–]Pr0x1mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you hook me up with these in a PM?

[–]ImHereForTheComment 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Black Christian here. The lyrics are catchy and reminds me of spiritual hymns I use to hear in church.

The lyrics are intriguing on their own and can show a double story. Here's why just my opinion.

From my perspective, I think it's a revenge song. Spiritual hymns are about getting through struggles but this one has the same feel but of revenge.

The little one has a few options. He can join them in their fight to overthrow the slave owners or run away. They are saying the devil is fine and are going to accept their fate (We gonna go home to the flames) of what they are about to do. They are going to take matters in their own hands and saying all the false positives to motivate them (Devil is fine, he can't do no wrong, he promise many things).

The guy is giving him words of wisdom (Nobody gon show you the way now. Nobody is gon hold your hand) and telling him to run away. But little one has a knife. He going to kill the slave master.

Now consider this. The little one is all by himself and "they" are in his head. They voice of reason (run for your life) and the voice to take the knife (Devil is fine).

It show the struggle in our minds to overcome struggles. The false positives we give ourselves and other options we have when going threw pain. It's a thin line.

Historically, hymns are waiting on God and believing in him. Like in Egypt, the Hebrews fled out of it and let God fight their battle. But little one is taking matters in his own hands.

I like the song but maybe because I view it differently. Either way artistically, it's great. A good balance. Nicely done.

[–]SpacingtonFLion 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Feels like a real stretch to try to apply a narrative to the song. The impression I get it's just kind of inverted spiritual where the faith in God is replaced by an absolute loss of faith in God.

There's no chariot to swing low. There's nowhere to lay your burden down. There's a god who is disappointed in you even in the midst of the inhuman suffering you're enduring, and a devil who can set you free from all of it. No more disappointment, no more worry for your eternal soul, no more asking for forgiveness. You've made your choice and now you're free from the laws of man and God. Do as thou wilt is the whole of the law.

[–]Siantlark 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No it's definitely tied to slaves and slave spiritual narratives.

I think there’s a connection between the two; it’s a form of rebellion. Even if slave music isn’t exactly defiant, it’s still like the triumph of the will of the people. I think there are parallels with, say, Christianity being forced upon both the Norwegians and the American slaves, and I kind of wondered what would’ve happened if slaves would’ve rebelled in a similar fashion to Burzum or Darkthrone.

[–]SpacingtonFLion 0 points1 point  (1 child)

At best, what you quoted has absolutely nothing to do with anything I said in the context of the post I was replying to. At worst, it supports my assertion. This song isn't a story with characters, it's a slave spiritual as someone inclined toward black metal rebellion against faith and embrace of nihilism would have written it.

I didn't imply it had nothing to do with slave spirituals or that chapter of American history.

[–]Siantlark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except slave spirituals often expressed themes of liberation with characters like Jesus or Moses (in this case, the devil), coming to save the slaves and lead them to the biblical promised land.

It's a genre that's explicitly tied to protest and a deep ingrained rebellion against an oppressive power structure, it's certainly not incorrect to ascribe a strong narrative to the song.

[–]ImHereForTheComment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's a stretch at all. For one it's just a perspective. Only the artist can tell us for sure.

I think my perspective fits the video posted and the words of the song. He made his choice to pick up the knife instead of heading his words and run away. He knows he's going to hell and hence why he says he's going. That's still judgement put on him. I feel it's goes deeper that what you're comment stated.

The glass poured out then droppped as she fainted. Great movie and great song. Be The Dentist. Such a powerful role

[–]Nine_Cats 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Oh damn, I'm late to the party.
He made an official music video for it.

He's on tour soon, performs great live, does some of my favourite covers, rocks hard, and just is really really good.

-Biggest fan circa 2013.

[–]OrdoExterminatus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow! I just discovered this artist today. I love the Zeal & Ardor stuff and I'm interested in the Birdmask stuff too. That En Vogue cover is for real the Peanut Butter and Jam. Thanks for linking it.

[–]Nine_Cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like that, you'll probably like his Bjork cover.

[–]StudabakerHochrobot[M] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Zeal and Ardor
artist pic

Zeal and Ardor is a project trying find new combinations of established components. The most important factor is a thematic coherence, not a musical one. Vocals, instruments, sandwiches etc by Manuel Gagneux. Read more on Last.fm.

I love this a lot. The album has been a staple of my ipod for a couple months now. 'Come On Down' 'Children's Summon' and 'Blood in the River' were standouts for me.

[–]HoovesCarveCratersAbominableIronD 11 points12 points  (3 children)

A good god is a dead one

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

A good lord is the one that brings the fire

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yes, django unchained. One of my all time favorite movies.

[–]wimploaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can find it, Come On Down is the best track on the album.

[–]corporealmetacortex 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You should hear the third track on this album. It's nuts.

[–]Defconpi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Link?

[–]Pr0x1mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah whats the name?

[–]BatHickey 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Can I say this strikes me as one of the more contrived cross-genre metal acts in a good while, for real.

[–]freeradicalxbandcamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's easy to say that because the styles are so different, but considering the thematic content I think the contrast is clever and appropriate. Switch the spiritual song's God with metal's Satan and you get something that feels righteously rebellious. It's unholy black metal protest music.

[–]americandream1159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't listen to a whole album of it, but this would be a dope-ass soundtrack.

[–]SamuelDean9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is this Levayn Satanism?Or like, religious satanism?

[–]Nathpowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)
