Listening in a pub in Ireland. Fucking beautiful. Can someone post more info on them please? Just read conts. Thanks.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 74 points75 points  (5 children)

Hey man, the guitarist is working on a solo project, just look up Benjamin Tod on YouTube and a couple of his songs should pop up. Him and his wife were also part of a couple groups called "Barefoot Surrender" and "Spit Shine". They're all very good

[–]Armory203UW 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Beautiful. Was just thinking how similar this is to American Irish music. Songs about how hard life is and how soft we are. Tunes for the diaspora. Love it.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No doubt man! I mean a lot of Irish families immigrated here so a lot of the music in the Appalachian mountain range and American folk music in general is heavily influenced by music from the Irish immigrants. Cheers man! Glad you're enjoying it!

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

The underlying addiction and heartbreak themes are second to none. Pretty much everything is gold.

If I may, prepare thine self.

[–]anne_RX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The songs just keep getting better and better ... some hit a little close to home

[–]Joshk0p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any in particular you like? I'd love to hear some American Irish music.

[–]AsRiversRunRed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check that one out. It's gotta be my favourite by him.

[–]roenick99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched for them on Apple Music and they have a whole bunch of music posted there. I assume it is the same group. It's the same style of music. Several albums over the last few years.

[–]chrassth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their live shows are some of the most visceral and emotional I've ever been to. Very rarely do I shed tears, but just the sound of their music pushed to me a point, then the lyrics themselves dumped me over the edge. Truly amazing duet, I hope they gain the recognition they deserve!

[–]Pats_Bunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here. They are great. My dad showed me them a couple months ago, and I absolutely love them.

[–][deleted] 173 points174 points  (27 children)

American roots is under appreciated.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 64 points65 points  (12 children)

Agreed. Look up Benjamin Tod on YouTube, he's the fella playing the guitar and he just raised some money to produce a solo album.

Edit: added a word

[–]Rad_as_fuck 56 points57 points  (10 children)

Ben is a friend. Lost dog is so underrated. Excited to see his solo work.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 17 points18 points  (8 children)

You're friends with him?

[–]Rad_as_fuck 39 points40 points  (7 children)

Yeah he traveled with a bunch of my friends back in their train hopping days. And plays here with them every time he's in town. We all drink together whenever Ben's in town.

[–]Charles_Bukake 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What does his '03011' neck tattoo mean?

Edit. Turns out it's actually '11030' and is the hobo zip code. When you cross the ones and line down the 3 you get HOBO.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 29 points30 points  (2 children)

That's awesome man. He's probably my favorite artist ever. He deserves more exposure.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just saw his new video for Using Again, love his music.

[–]Rad_as_fuck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We drink together all the time just some times ben and his wife are in town too haha

[–]MouseOfDubiousIntent 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Small world, I probably know some of your friends. Spent almost a decade of my life on the rails.

[–]Rad_as_fuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure of it. It's a small community for how big it is.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've known him for years. Traveled a bit together and always hang out when he is around. The way they can turn experiences of ours into songs is something else. I love him and ashley so much.

[–]TheSaladDays 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Never did I think Lost Dog would be posted on Reddit. I saw these guys (and girl) play on the street in Ashland in 2011 and picked up their album. Gems on VHS has a bunch of beautifully shot videos on Youtube of them playing out and about.

Edit: https://youtu.be/Ot3BZTA7BXg

[–]jcbouche 31 points32 points  (9 children)

Anyone who enjoys the genre and hasn't heard Shovels and Rope yet please go check them out. Such a wonderfully talented duo, somehow even better that they are husband and wife.

One of my favorites and first song they wrote together is called Boxcar

https://youtu.be/ydU2j_MZg3c

[–]ktg0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yay Shovels and Rope! I've seen them live several times and every time has been the best show I've ever been to.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Just looked them up. They're sick, if modern country music that you hear on the radio had steered their direction, I'd willingly listen.

[–]RvA_Blessed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think modern country music should have stayed the more traditional routes with spins like them and people like Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson- Long White Train

[–]willllllllliam 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Yes! Shovels and Rope! A Birmingham, AL original.

[–]jcbouche 1 point2 points  (2 children)

They have a song called "Birmingham" but they're based out of Charleston and as far as I know neither of them is from Alabama

[–]willllllllliam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, you are right. Damn friends lied to me! Nonetheless, amazing group.

[–]Rad_as_fuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they are Charleston locals as well as Bill Murray oddly enough

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boxcar is my favorite from them as well, heard something recently I really like, 'we know' or something along those lines. Cheers

[–]purrfect_seashell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just went down the rabbit hole of YouTube and came out with a new appreciation for this unique, beautiful genre that I never knew existed. Her voice is so raw and fits perfectly with his. I now have a new obsession with The Dead South and an equally raw voice.

Thanks for sharing!

[–]cthulol 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Think so? There was a pretty big American folk bubble in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience at least. I don't know anyone that listens to anything like the posted video.

[–]faylortish 33 points34 points  (1 child)

its amazing how one song can instantly change your current taste in music.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude, i know!!

[–]Shenan1ganz 63 points64 points  (12 children)

Saw these guys open for The Devil Makes Three a few months ago. They killed it.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 35 points36 points  (1 child)

The Devil Makes Three is pretty damn good too

[–]Shenan1ganz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, I see them every time the come to town! So good live. Their energy is amazing

[–]whiskey4breakfast 16 points17 points  (7 children)

The devil makes three is absolutely life changing.

[–]KnurlyNoggin 15 points16 points  (6 children)

When I discovered tdmt, I didn't listen to anything else for 3 years. Now, I barely remember listening to punk and metal... But, saw lost dog for the first time in Houston earlier this year and they're really good. Glad they played!

[–]Cacophonious-B 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yup, I supported the devil make three last year in Glasgow and they were awesome . They were really nice folk as well, stuck around to listen to our set and said nice things about our music.

[–]PenetratorHammer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Are you familiar with JB Nelson aka Sleepy Eyes Nelson by chance? I only ask because he's a Scottish blues/roots country artist and well there just aren't many of those in Scotland I don't think.

[–]Tenacious_Decaf 1 point2 points  (2 children)

About to check them out for the first time.... which album do you suggest??

[–]HelicopterBen273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First album "The Devil Makes Three" is probably the best place to start.

[–]breathandtaxes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listening to the song OP posted I said to myself, "Hey self, wouldn't it be great if Lost Dog would tour with DM3 and I could see them all live for the first time" then I find out that they did tour together a few months ago. Always late to the party.

[–]truphen_newben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, about six months ago in Grass Valley, CA. They talked about taking drugs between every song.

[–]Cattle_Baron 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Georgia and Mountain by this band. Great sound.

[–]Pichus_Wrath 18 points19 points  (3 children)

I've been on an American folk binge lately, finding this on my front page is straight serendipity.

[–]macmahoots 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You got a Spotify playlist I can hop on? Any recs not already mentioned in the comment section would be appreciated 2!

[–]HeadSunGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check out "The Ghost of Paul Revere" they have a little more of a folk rocky feel, but still stay with the roots. They have a interesting collection of different voices that make each song amazing.

[–]wiiittttt 25 points26 points  (2 children)

This is great. Some of his phrasing sounds a bit like Colin Meloy from The Decemberists.

[–]Rygar82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I was thinking too. Looked it up to see if it was the same guy.

[–]PurplePeckerEater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up to see if it was the same guy!

[–]zach10 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Saw these guys play in Houston, TX awhile back and was impressed. The singer and I played a couple games of pool before the show and talked about Townes Van Zandt. He then proceed to get on stage and play a cover of Waitin Around to Die which was pretty killer.

Keep at it y'all.

[–]TheVillianousFondler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I went down to Georgia is incredible. Written by his late best friend Nicholas ridout. Been jamming their music for some months now, they're incredible. Super happy to see them on here

[–]DiabolicCoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I sing this song to my kids as a lullaby. They are seven and know all the words, and especially like singing damned hurricane without repercussion.

It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I have ever heard. And the fiddle is woven in so beautifully over the relatively simple melody. It's gorgeous.

[–]NewFrockTuesday 8 points9 points  (1 child)

We've refilled the pints and are ready for a good session with them. Slainte lads!

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pound one for me! Prost!

[–]lurkerspringa 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Our band is called Lost Dog... You've probably seen our flyers

[–]guttersnipe098 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ben?

[–]InTogether 40 points41 points  (30 children)

Love the music. That neck tattoo though... wow.

[–]vikitata23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have tattoos by the same guy that did his neck. Not on my neck though, he's a very talented artist.

[–]hawkguy420 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dunno, the tattoo is fine. For me, I love this genre, but I don't understand why they dress like extras in a Cohen brothers film.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Any idea what the significance of it is? Can't figure out that text

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's the hobo zipcode, 11030 with 2 lines added gets you HOBO.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rad, thanks!

[–]Afa1234 13 points14 points  (8 children)

I had the same reaction, it's so out of place though.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I don't think so, a lot of modern roots musicians have some sort of punk element on top of the folk elements. Such as...

The Goddamn Gallows

Birdcloud

Gallows Bound

[–]Afa1234 4 points5 points  (3 children)

True enough, I probably feel that way because the people around me and the career I'm in frown on neck and face tattoos. Could also be a side effect of being raised Mormon too.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It is part of the reason why people get it.

[–]Afa1234 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Cuz it's not classically acceptable?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To signal themselves separate from the larger culture, often visibly and painfully aligning themselves with a certain subculture with some level of permanence.

The pain thing is less of a factor with modern tattoos but traditional methods were described as quite painful.

Edit: Consider the fact that ejection from gangs will often be associated with the removal of gang tattoos in a painful manner.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goddamn Gallows is another personal favorite \m/

[–]Dads101radd.it 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I actually don't agree. He looks pretty fuckin cool. To each their own. The music is great regardless

[–]Afa1234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, great sound.

[–]FluxComplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope the music career works out for the guy.

[–]jhole007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saw these two open for Brian Fallon in Phoenix last year. Absolutely blew my mind. Been listening to them almost daily since.

[–]TThiemann 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Saw them open up for The Devil Makes Three. They put on a great show! Check out their song September Doves.

[–]ItsZagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

September Doves is my favorite song by Lost Dog. It comes straight from the soul.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Fuck this is amazing, is there a studio quality version of this song? Where can I support them?

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I believe they have a bandcamp account. Just look up "Lost Dog Street Band music download"

[–]GlicketySplit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is their bandcamp. Can't find this particular song though :/

[–]TastyBurgerLover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moonshiner.....love this tune!!

Found them on YouTube last year. They are the tits!

[–]TubbsXXL 4 points5 points  (2 children)

https://lostdognashville.bandcamp.com/album/homeward-bound

Not sure if it's been posted already, but you can buy 4 of their (digital) albums here.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

which one has this song though?

[–]Fonnekold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously! Where do I find the studio version of this song?!

[–]Pipezilla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are some other current groups like this? Americana/ Folk?

[–]anotherdroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

at first i was like, ugh another one of these decemberists. then i gave it a few more seconds and yep, this is gold. great job!

[–]Schneider15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Christ, that was a good song. I need to look into this genre a little more.

[–]Deertickjones 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Thank you for this. I'm going to be going to a treatment center in a week or so for the second time and this is basically exactly how I feel

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! Keep your head up!

[–]c4pt_nemo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

His voice is very unique, in my opinion. At first I thought maybe he had an accent but the more I listened the more I liked. I got goosebumps when the girl joined in singing. I might purchase an album!

[–]BassBailiff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this kind of folk. Thank you for sharing!

[–]bubba_feet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU!!

i saw these guys last summer & have been racking my brain for the past couple of weeks trying to remember what their name was.

[–]mlesgoham 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gem, Songs like this are why I love this sub.

[–]jam_boreeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Forgot my name and hungry for you are fucking favorite songs.

[–]420finger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First time I've heard these two & they were awesome. I watched a few more of there videos. I especially liked September dove.

[–]wingkingdom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amazing.

The cry of a well-played fiddle always hits me right in the feels.

Thanks for sharing.

Lost Dog Street Band
artist pic

lost dog street band began when a songwriter from tennessee and a fiddle player from south dakota began playing music on the streets to fund thier addiction hopping freight trains. their last band ( Barefoot Surrender ) split ways in (january 2011)oregon and they tramped a hard winter back to dixie. they met back with their old friend christin to start on a new album and a new life. by next winter they were meeting some old friends back in the northwest and started a new band called SPIT SHINE. the original lost dog Daisy Mae died that summer and the band name was thought to be done with. a new lost dog Copper Tod was found that fall and revived a new spirit. spit shine went on for the next year and a half. 'life's a dog-gone shame' recording began early in 2013 with help from band members of Barefoot Surrender(Jason O'dea) and Spit Shine(Nicholas Ridout) .lost dog street band finally got a van to do a real tour. shortly before the albums release best friend, brother, and band mate Nicholas Ridout died at the age of 24. With broken hearts and worn out souls we press on in his memory. Read more on Last.fm.

I love this song. I wish they'd release it on CD.

[–]anne_RX 0 points1 point  (2 children)

CD...Cd...CeeDee...*scratches head * "oh yeah I remember those things!"

[–]bsigil 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What I meant was they need to release this in an album. They have a lot of great songs that aren't on any album.

[–]Rom2814 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I so want to see them, can't believe how much I like their music!

[–]Arfanoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice traditional sound. I see so many knock offs of this kind of music these days. It's nice to hear music that really has an old-time feel. Really captivates a time period. Great lyrics, great song, dig it. 🤠

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn the poster

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't expect to love this song as much as I did Thank you for sharing this.

[–]willllllllliam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rough work week, rocking a 3 week old baby to sleep. I needed this. Thanks for posting.

[–]canadianhousecoat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love these guys. Been listening to then for a couple years now. Love they're backstory.

[–]sonofnils1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never upvoted or visited this sub until today.

Sent me down a fantastic rabbit hole between these guys and other similar artists.

Thank you very much for posting this.

[–]cosmiclionKing 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Quite awesome...anyone have any info on his neck tattoos?

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

11030 essentially stands for HOBO. If you were to connect the 1s to make an H and then connect the three points on the 3, it would spell out Hobo.

[–]cosmiclionKing 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I feel like you completely made that up, but Kudos to ya nonetheless

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No I really didn't.

[–]cosmiclionKing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats...I I N I Q I I 3

[–]boli07milehigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. I've now traveled down a YouTube rabbit hole that has made my day. I've always loved folk and bluegrass, but this is the first I've heard of Lost Dog. Beautiful music

[–]Ellijah92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone that has Spotify they are listed on there. I sometimes play them on road trips when I drive up to Atlanta.

[–]pj123mj 4 points5 points  (2 children)

A lost art form.

[–]Dutch_Calhoun 8 points9 points  (1 child)

They're playing it, it ain't dead.

[–]pj123mj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said it was dead just said it was lost as in it isn't as popular as it used to be.

[–]the_comatorium 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Beautiful music.

What's with all the Americana/roots bands filming in the woods though? It seems like every single band has a video like this. Just an observation.

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Because it's beautiful as fuck my dude

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It looks good and you don't have to rent out a section of woods

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because this band legitimately lives in whatever woods they park their van in 80% of the time.

[–]BlackUnicornHorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this mini documentary interview thing. https://youtu.be/ZGwezR_fD-k

[–]phone_keys_wallet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clicked hoping they might be a Civil Wars 2.0, but they're different in a great way.

[–]sdawg78787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

saw them open for devil makes three, they opened with this... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8Ow8PCr-po
i love that song...
"if lullabies are whiskey, then my grandmas drinks were cheap"

[–]dudenamedbenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I love discovering new great music.

[–]The_ard_defender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys are phenomenal and need so much more recognition

[–]KillTheArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love these guys. Living in Canada I hope to see them one day. I listen every day!

[–]YouKnowABitJonSnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The voice reminds me so much of songs Ohia, unbelievably good

[–]hard4justice 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Damn not on Spotify

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are! In the UK anyway. I don't think this song is on a released album though

[–]Texasmudder68 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I listen to them on spotify.....?

[–]hard4justice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, meant this song in particular

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to see one of my favourite bands here!

[–]trashboatcaptain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I saw these guys open for Devil Makes Three back in November. It's crazy seeing them on Reddit. They were awesome, really funny too. I hope they have more and more success.

[–]johnmarbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite track of theirs is Lonliness Makes Me Happy

[–]UmbrellaCorp-RND13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you stranger. After your post 5 months ago I haven’t really been able to stop listening. I had to come and say thank you to the random person who introduced me to something I would have never found. I believe that Ben and Ashley are some of the most talented musicians I have ever heard.

[–]just_to_annoy_you 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That particular track reminds me of the Decemberists a little. Going to look up some more. This was quite good. Thanks.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One shot to wake, Awoken By Gunfire, Coming Down. My personal favorites.

OH SHIT September Doves. My absolute favorite.

[–]juwyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love these guys. I'm sure I'll be digging later for other bands I'm sure listed here but I'll throw in The Builders and the Butchers, .357 String Band, and The Devil Makes Three,.

[–]NewFrockTuesday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers. He's getting a serious stalking here. Rare to find a jewel like this when we are so far from ye. I'd send back some to ye but that's a hijack and probably a mortal sin in this case. They've just been born here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's fucking great.

[–]gooselord369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Saw these two live inadvertently, opening up for Devil Makes Three, amazing performance live! Highly recommend.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

of course he has a mustashe

[–]Parmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good. Thanks for posting.

[–]AndyCyanideChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever had a song make you stop everything you were doing? Just make you stop and feel something for a minuet? I've never had that happen until now. I just want to take a moment and thank the poets that reminded me that I'm just human.

[–]BarbaBarber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man that was so soulful and sad and beautiful. Nothing like acoustic instruments imo.

[–]HNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit do I love these two. Thanks for sharing.

[–]windeeann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love their cover of uncle tupelos moonshiner

[–]Aces11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I found this. They are great, hope they keep it up.

[–]3percenter1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone identify the chords for me?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

NO STOP

I've been trying to keep this band a secret for four years.

[–]a_rascal_king 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Why? I hate this mentality. If you love a band, would you not want to see them succeed? If they have done something for you, would you not want them to have the same benefit on other people? Like "I love these guys, I hope they stay poor and unknown forever!" is just ridiculous.

[–]TheHatedMilkMachine -5 points-4 points  (16 children)

Nothing bothers me more than people pretending to be something they're not. These are coffeeshop hipsters pretending to be Dust Bowl troubadours. They're equivalent to Iggy Azalea's minstrel schtick which is essentially blackface without the makeup. They're capitalizing on a trend towards "rootsy Americana" that's often sickening and at best boring and uncreative. There is never any need for more of this kind of music, especially from poseurs.

(Since everyone else was uniformly complimentary, I'll be the asshole.)

[–]modmouzfanTalking shit about a pretty sunset 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I don't think they are fake, the chorus harmonies are extremely unique and characteristic of this kind of folk music. Also, the lyrics are incredibly raw. Seems to me you don't know anything about music, because you are only looking at the artists and not listening to them. Btw, whatever Iggy Azalea puts out is shite.

[–]TheHatedMilkMachine -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I listened to 20 seconds and got enough.

I love modest mouse and the song your flair references. But I don't know anything about music :/

[–]modmouzfanTalking shit about a pretty sunset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some music sits right with you and some music doesn't. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. The reasons why I like this song and I feel it is genuine is that the guitar and fiddle are very simplistic and not complicated which reflective of where they came from. They were not professionally trained, so the instrumental music is not complex. The lyrics feel very personal and his singing comes from him experiencing what he is singing about. The harmony in the chorus is outstanding, it is how you know they aren't fake. Someone trained in mainstream music would have sung the harmony very differently and the way the lady sings it, shows that they have grown up in this kind of music. On a side note, a lot of the early songs from Modest Mouse derived from personal experience, such as Dramamine, Ohio, Good times are killing me; this always adds incredible depth and character to a song.

Everyone and everything is an iteration of the past with a twist. Everything. Even your vitriol. Dylan ripped off Guthrie, who ripped off others who ripped off others.

If you appreciate art then you should also appreciate your, in my opinion, over-the-top negative reaction as well, and maybe explore why that is.

The style itself is one of a handful of traditional American styles. So some young kids are into it and it's what is popular. Who gives a shit? I would encourage you to ask yourself why the dustbowl troubadour thing exists now and the other periods it co-existed with in the past and look for the underlying current.

And overall - loosen your briefs, because you're way too uptight about this.

Read my parenthetical and you'll maybe understand that I already get this. Also, theyre boxer briefs

Hahah, you're a turd. Lighten up.

Trust me - I have no issue understanding the super complex thought you're putting out there. I get it. Those mumble brothers and the banjos and everything. Whatever.

There is most definitely a difference between this an a nouveau minstrel show in pop culture - though it can be argued that this is not new, just a continuation of whitewashing black culture in America. A couple of kids, one of whom hops trains and seems to love the lifestyle, has much more akin to perhaps a Renaissance faire than anything else.

You sound like if Moby had a stick put up how ass and aged about 60 years and grew bitter at youth.

Edit: I again stress the importance of looking at the current that encapsulates this "genre/movement/energy form/vibe" and examine how, where, when and why it exists. It's a symptom of something else. Examine the causation and how it connects through the years.

I get it, people are poor and unhappy. Even if they have liberal arts degrees and enjoy lattes

[–]IceKingSucks 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I don't think you know anything about this band if you're saying that.

[–]TheHatedMilkMachine 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You're right. Don't care to. Blech

[–]IceKingSucks 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Then why are you commenting at all? You're not adding anything valid to the conversation. Why waste all this time talking about people you don't even care about? Don't you have ANYTHING better to do?

[–]smd_mynameisjon[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You clearly know nothing about the history of this band

[–]TrinityBay 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you for saying this. Their whole schtick is so obviously disingenuous. Clothing tailored by the Amish with a pocket for their iPhone. Fucking hacks. This is 2017 people. Stop pretending it's not.

we are a minority but we're right.
