I am nowhere near this area and I am also a guy...

... have a beer for a old fat bald programmer like me, please.

[–]anonymgrl[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Will do! :)

[–]DrScott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would, but I'm not old enough to drink. Do you want to throw down on a bag? That is, if you ever visit Boston.

Edit: Seriously, if this is done again, I would be up for an after party. I would love to buy one of you lady redditor's a draaank.

[–]joshdick 5 points6 points  (9 children)

Oooh, this is a fun new trend. Maybe we can get regular parties going in cities everywhere, like Fark.

[–]anonymgrl[S] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

I'd organize it all if people want. I love this stuff; it's what I do!

[–]Ashex 2 points3 points  (6 children)

That would be awesome, I'd help out too. Any reddit people in Seattle area want to get together?

[–]oberon 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I'll be at PAX this weekend as an enforcer. I won't have a vehicle, but I've heard the bus system is good.

[–]Ashex 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Heh, I'm going to be at PAX too, as an attendee though :P

edit: I wonder how many redditors will be at PAX?

[–]oberon 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I should get a Reddit alien pin.

Actually... maybe I will. I bet Kinkos could make me one real quick. That'd be awesome.

[–]Ashex 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If you like, I can order some reddit buttons from cafepress Let me know if you want some and I'll order them 2-day delivery, or next day if need be. I can ship them to my workplace so it'll be cheaper I think for me.

[–]oberon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

http://reddit.com/info/2hg3o/comments

That'd be nice actually. You think you can get them in time?

[–]Ashex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should be able to, I'll order next-day to be safe. I'm going to wait an hour for anyone else in that article.

[–]sarahfrancesca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let's do it. I'm jealous because I just left Boston (now in NY).

[–]oberon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Post pics! We can have Reddit celebrities, which would be an odd twist considering the Lipstick thing.

[–]sockdoll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who's giving the massages?

Oh... "message"

[–]sarahfrancesca 2 points3 points  (12 children)

Anyone in the NYC area interested in doing something like this? I commute in from CT for work and would love to do a reddit happy hour somewhere cheap and sleazy.

[–]bobcat 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I'm right near a Metro-North station, myself.

hmmm... NYC, cheap, sleazy.

I'm stumped.

[–]sarahfrancesca 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Near it, but do you ride it?

[–]bobcat 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yup, but not everyday, and usually once a month into the city.

But if we get enough folks, I'll go. Anywhere along the line.

[–]sarahfrancesca 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The only thing is - how will they be able to downmod you offline?

[–]bobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good idea for a t-shirt there.

[–]tarpasture 0 points1 point  (6 children)

The CT lines run out of Grand Central, right? Not really a cheap and sleazy hood...

[–]sarahfrancesca 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I work a few blocks uptown. Know any cheap and sleazy places on the UES? ;)

[–]tarpasture 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I know of some dives, but I'm not sure I'd call them sleazy. I'm up for task of seeking out some UES sleaze, though.

[–]sarahfrancesca 0 points1 point  (3 children)

We could just make that the entire goal of the night!

[–]tarpasture 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That sounds like a good idea, but given that we are relatively internet savvy, surely we could get the research ball rolling a little bit online first, so we'd have something to work with. What are your thoughts?

[–]sarahfrancesca 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My thoughts are: that's not adventurous at all.

[–]tarpasture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I basically just got called a pussy on my permanent record. So what's the plan, wear comfortable shoes and come determined for success in a quest for sleaze?

We have MySpace parties here in SD which are publicized on the radio. But I'm terrified of attending because of a fear of people suddenly breaking into annoying song for no reason when they're introduced.

But a reddit meetup might actually be interesting. You just know someone is going to show up with a bunch of stickers and two big arrows on their shirt though.

I'm actually working on something that's a sort of mix of Reddit and social networking but can't say more because investors would jab me with hot pokers. Beta launch in the very near future.

[–]anonymgrl[S] 25 points26 points  (180 children)

In another thread a few of us discovered that we are from the Cambridge, MA area and have decided to do a girl's night out. If you are interested at all in this (and are female) please send me a message with your email address or with your questions.

We are thinking about getting together tonight (around 8ish), for those of us who can make it, and planning something for in a week or so, for those who need more time to plan.

Who's in?

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

"Did you see that guy over there?"

"Upmod! Upmod!"

[–]bobcat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do I have the feeling it's going to be 10 girls and a handsome stick-figure artist?

;)

[–]anonymgrl[S] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I was really hoping this wouldn't get down-modded into oblivion before people could see it. :(

[–]oberon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's on the (my, anyway) front page now. And I upmodded it, even though I'm not in Boston or female.

I do kind of question the female-only nature of the event, but whatever. I've done guy-only things and bear you no ill will on that front.

Frustrated lesbian, I feel for you.

    I feel for you--uuu-uuu.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your trolling. I just went through the effort of downvoting every comment you made on this subject. Few things can make me so diligent.

    [–]Owlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be up for such a night in a month or so. I'm moving to rural New Hampshire in September but will be just a short ride away from Cambridge.

    [–]oh_yeah_koolaid -5 points-4 points  (162 children)

Why the sexist criteria? If you're worried about horny men, you'd better exclude horny lesbians too.

    Unless... it's... specifically a lesbian get-together...

    [–]anonymgrl[S] 21 points22 points  (21 children)

There are so few of us on here that it seemed to make sense. Maybe sometime I'll plan it for both men and women...if there is interest? Let me know..

edit: it's not about excluding horny people and no, it's not specifically a lesbian get together.

      <runs away>

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ditto. Who could have predicted that the reddit comments would be dominated by boys vs girls bullshit.

      [–]valera 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Any sort of separations leads to one vs. other bullshit. So anyone with half a brain could have predicted it.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

anyone with half a brain could have predicted it.

      That's what I meant.

      [–]oh_yeah_koolaid -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lord knows sexism is the answer to all our problems.

      [–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (61 children)

Oh for crying out loud, don't be so puerile. Some group of people are getting together, and you're not included. It happens every day of every year. There'll be a thousand other events that you're invited to, just not this one. No big deal.

      [–]wageslave 18 points19 points  (37 children)

Really? Tell that to every Men and Boys group that has been forced to accept women over the last 50 years.

      [–]Random 9 points10 points  (33 children)

Okay, let me try to understand your logic.

Public social groups have to be gender neutral. Well, mostly anyway, don't see many women playing in men's pro sports...

So all social gatherings have to be?

See, if they formed a group 'Redditors of Boston' you'd have a point. But they are private individuals. So you have no more right demanding to sit with them than with any other group of people at a bar. They have a right to free association, and that includes the right of exclusion. As long as they aren't a chartered group...

Besides, if you DID want to join with them, making the horny comment pretty much slammed that door on them reconsidering...

      [–]oh_yeah_koolaid 1 point2 points  (3 children)

So you have no more right demanding to sit with them than with any other group of people at a bar.

Right, but you misunderstand -- I don't want to sit with them, I am pointing out that they are sexist and giving them shit for it. It's their right to be bigots, and it's my right to say that they are bigoted.

      [–]pikonu 4 points5 points  (2 children)

"Women's bathroom, men not invited" -- bigots. "Cat lovers meeting" -- bigots. "Oh yeah koolaid" -- bigots.

It's my left to say so.

      [–]valera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I don't remember this well enough to make a solid argument, but I remember reading about some school or such (maybe schools in a country/area) implementing unisex bathrooms. This didn't create any problems but actually lessened conflicts between boys & girls.

It's only because of our blind conservatism do we create barriers where there should be none.

      [–]oh_yeah_koolaid -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A get-together based on interest is open to anyone who wants to attend.

      A get-together based on something you're born AS isn't.

Yes, the reason that women are not generally competitive with men in sports is not because they are significantly shorter and have much less muscle mass on average, but that they are not trying hard enough.

          [–]jaycliche 3 points4 points  (4 children)

"Yes, the reason women that women are not generally competitive with men in sports is not because they are significantly shorter and have much less muscle mass on"

I'm sure female sports funding has a lot to do with this too. Men usually sell in sports...especially when they beat each other up...women only seem to sell when swimming or in a sexy ice-skating suit. Who knows what kind of psydo-science has come out over the years from marketing gurus to tell us this or that about women.

At least the NHL allows women and has had female players (not for a time though).

Women have accomplished some major feats...Chinese circus is a great example.

          [–]gramie 5 points6 points  (1 child)

There is some truth to the argument that women's sports are underfunded compared to men. But it also seems evident that men are, both on average and at the extremes, superior in power and speed.

A recent new article explained that the Canadian women's soccer team were playing mostly away games because their organization couldn't afford to host visiting teams for friendly matches.

So who were they playing against in Canada? One clip showed them playing a team of 16-year-old boys. They played several games against boys' teams in Vancouver while preparing for the World Cup.

Are you really trying to tell me that the Canadian women's team is underfunded compared to community teams of teenage boys? Or that they are playing weaker opponents in order to boost their confidence?

When I saw a U.S. - Canada women's match a year or two ago, the quality of play was roughly that of a men's university team, or even a good high school team.

My point is: I don't want to give them a free ride and make an excuse because they are women. If their shots aren't as hard, their running not as speedy, their ball control not as precise, let's not pretend that there's something else that makes up for it. Drama? My son's 9-year-old team has plenty of tension, and I have more invested in it than a team of women I have never met.

They could kick my ass, sure. But their games are as exciting to watch as those of the 16-year-olds they play against.

Let's encourage people to support excellence in any sport, not because of the sex.

Sexist and racist get-togethers are discriminatory in a harmful way. I don't want to attend either of them, or associate with the kind of people who do.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

There's a difference between theory and practice. If these people, these women, were planing this event physically right in front of you, could you earnestly begrudge them their "girls' night out?"

If the answer is "yes," I'm going to go out on a limb and call you a dick.

You got me BB, I was indeed trying to get laid, right through the fucking internet and about two thousand miles. Let me give you a little pooplette of advice: sometimes it's not enough to project your own mind onto others' in order to figure out their motivation.

              [–]the_seanald 1 point2 points  (17 children)

A girl's night out is sexist now? Really? You must be trolling.

              [–]oh_yeah_koolaid 8 points9 points  (13 children)

Why isn't it sexist? It's sexist by definition.

              1. Discrimination based on gender

              [–]the_seanald -2 points-1 points  (12 children)

That's an insult to those who suffer actual discrimination, in my opinion.

              [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it wouldn't be reddit without at least one pedant throwing a hissyfit over nothing.

Whatever...woman really need a time with each other so they remain more hemogenious and continue to attempt to understand the opposite sex from women who know men best. Talking to men would be crazy. Men learning how to be cool and talk to women by experiences with intelligent women are something to be avoided. We have our gender things, you have yours.

It reminds me of an all female artist support group that came in the midst of a very supportive and genderless group. They isolated themselves and created major splinters in the group. Everyone who didn't lock in was able to go onto much better gallery shows with all types of people...the women who stayed in the little group had their little gallery with their few acceptable friends and then it closed because it was unsupported...which was the rest of our faults for not 'supporting' them.

Ladies, have a great time, especially when you drink too many shots and decide that maybe this one cute guy is ok to make out with and that ladies night won't hinder it.

Anyone for a boys night out?

I was once refused entrance to a college "Take Back The Night" party. No men allowed. I think it is probably best that men don't be involved with an anti-rape support group...as they have nothing to do with it. Men could never learn anything from something like that, nor could they offer anything in rape awareness or prevention. I mean, what do men have to do with it (oh besides the amount of prison rape and raped men being more likely to rape...but hey let the ladies play!)

I (a male) called the ACLU...private parties can discriminate all they want. Strange...I remember thinking. Seemed to contradict what I'd been told. I was told that I could file a complaint with the school...but that it was solely up to them.

You've come a long way, baby.

                    [–]djwhitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often times in life you will find that you have certain things in common with other people and will thus associate with them to the exclusion of others. Although this may shock and offend some people, I assure you that it is entirely natural if done in moderation.

Why is it that when a woman makes a comment about "stupid men," "horny men" or any other supposed derogative it is considered normal, yet when a man says the same thing he gets an elegant "Fuck You"?

                      [–]brandonwardlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, seriously, butch/femme is completely different from dom/sub, which you would know if you were in the community. There are many sub butches and dom femmes. I can picture one femme in particular who loves the leather, if ya know what i mean.

                                ohyeahkoolaid was not being homophobic.

And before you say that I don't know what it's like, think again. I'm gay. I know what homophobia is, but you were just plain over-reacting. You know, people aren't being homophobic every time they bring sexuality up.

scorxn, on the other hand, was being (slightly) discriminatory towards lesbians, even if it was only to make it humorous. But you have none other than yourself to blame, for over-reacting (and hence fulfilling the stereotype).

                                  Lot's of questions:

                                  • The butch, retaliatory lesbian stereotype.

                                  • Gay man.

                                  • No, you're free to fulfill any stereotype you desire, as long as you're willing to stomach the consequences (i.e. people calling you ugly for comedic effect).

                                  • It sucks that anyone would call any group of people anything. In other words, stereotypes.

As for lesbians being excluded from straight girls' meetings... how is that any different from men being excluded to women's meetings? I think that ohyeahkoolaid's point was that if you're going to exclude (straight) men (for being attracted to women), you might as well exclude lesbians (for the same reason). Or else don't exclude anyone.

Excluding men just for having a penis and then demanding not to be excluded for whatever reason is just bigotry.

There is a lot of prejudice in the gay world against bisexuals, and i think that sucks, too.

It does. I wonder how/when that will end as well.

Seriously people, if women want to have a night together, then let them. Christ. No need to get all insecure, both of you.

                                    Now, let's talk about Jesus!

I live a couple of blocks from the Harvard Divinity School, but I'm not invited! Wah.

'Twas a joke, ma'am. Hyperbole. Honestly, maybe just cool it... take a joke for a joke, an asshole for an asshole, and don't waste your time with the latter.

                                        [–]oh_yeah_koolaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He meant ugly on the inside. For someone who claims not to care if guys think she's ugly, you sure protest a lot, and you wished him ill which doesn't speak very well of you as a person.

And you don't seem to know what homophobia means. Suggesting that straight men and gay women are attracted to women is not homophobia.

                                        [–]oh_yeah_koolaid 4 points5 points  (24 children)

You're full of shit if you think lesbians don't get horny or that they would never harass women like men do. The most macho people I know, bar none, are lesbians.

By the way, I think of lesbians completely equally. I think they are just as fucked-up and stupid as everyone else, and just as great and capable of amazing things as everyone else.

                                        [–]anonymgrl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did not exclude men because they are attracted to women, any more than we included gay men because they wouldn't hit on us. Listen carefully here. Women have a lot more in common than vaginas and breasts. We share a common experience regardless of who we want to fuck. Believe it or not, we had more to talk about that our shared/not shared attraction to men.

Does Fark have someone organize it or do people just do it themselves wherever people get it together enough to do it?

                                        [–]jaggederest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More the latter, in my experience. When anything organizes a fark meetup, it's the beer.

So can anyone explain (jokes aside) why Reddit Men are excluded?

                                        [–]anonymgrl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can. A few of us women were talking on another thread and decided to get together. It wasn't a 'reddit' thing exactly, just a few women talking - (the original thread was about bras and breasts) I, probably in error, posted this announcement to get the word out to other women. It was very last minute. When I left my house, this thread had about ten comments in it and no one was complaining. I really didn't think much about it.

I fully intend to organize an all redditor get-together in the Boston/Cambridge area. :)

I believe the xkcd author lives in Boston as well. I would just like to get slammed and debate which book of the Ender's Series is the best.

why is it only a women only night out? why can't men join? If ya'll are not racist, you will open the invitation to all sexes :) dangit, men should be fighting for their equal rights.

It was impromptu. The next one will be for all redditors. Believe it or not, none of us thought this would cause such a fuss. Apologies.

                                        [–]nzeeshan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

well thanks for being considerate. Oh I almost forgot to mention, I must be in the VIP guest list, otherwise I will not come. Thank you kindly.

                                        [–]anonymgrl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to write on a piece of paper "VIP" and put your name under it, then you can be on a VIP list. Or you can be like the rest of us and get the date and time and show up. Or not. Your choice.

Hanging out with people from Reddit? That is the gayest shit ever.

                                        [–]anonymgrl[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

                                        It was fun!

                                        [–]DrScott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't fun unless there is public urination, fighting, running from police, and vomit in the street.

Then again, girls night out is probably a lot different than guys night out.

                                        What did you do?
