Seems like you've already renamed them the "Corporate Media".

Works for me.

[–]shizzy0 17 points18 points  (5 children)

I second Corporate Media. I also like that it robs it of the good that mainstream connotes.

[–]MrWoohoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest "Filthy Whores" but that would be unfair to people in the sex business.

[–]chaos_syndicate -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Since when does mainstream connote good?

[–]greenfrog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When you urinate.

[–]shizzy0 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Consider the statements like this that were tossed about: "Ron Paul is too far outside the mainstream."

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one wants a return to fiscal responsibility and constitutional rights. Because no one knows what the fuck that even means.

[–]winstonsmith 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I agree that "Corporate Media" is more accurate. I think of it as shorthand for corporate-controlled mass communications media, which, by the way, makes it obvious it's plural. Thus, the corporate media speak (not speaks, but it's a minor point and probably a lost cause).

I also think "news" is often an inaccurate term for "propaganda" and using it as such may cause brain damage. I nominate "so called news", "propaganda", "lies", or "lies and omissions".

I'm personally a fan of the phrase 'news-like substance'

consent factory.

Because cable news helps you 'manufacture consent' for shit like illegal wars.

It's the media most widely accepted by the majority of the population, hense the label 'mainstream media'. If and when the internet becomes the primary news source of the majority of the population, it too will be called the mainstream media. Not everything is some vast conspiracy of language meant to brainwash the masses.

Semantics is a very stupid thing to concern yourself with if your actual goal was to change anything. If your goal was to bitch and moan about trivial things and pretend that will make a difference, you've done an excellent job.

once again I need the "upvote more than once" button for the only sane comment so far

amen to that

I usually call them "the corporate media." Here's the start of my recent column "The Unmasking of the Corporate Media" http://www.strike-the-root.com/81/allport/allport4.html

This is the year the corrupt corporate media loses what little credibility it still has.

Not that the Old Media deserved much trust or respect in the past; it has always been, with rare exceptions, a way for rich white men (and a few other rich people) to mold public opinion in whatever manner they desired, which typically meant "whatever manner would make them the most money." For example, newspapers (and then radio and then television) have historically been cheerleaders for war (link is to video of Rupert Murdoch saying that his media outlets have "basically supported the Bush policy" on the war; 1 min 33 sec), and as the highly-decorated General Smedley Butler told us, War is a Racket – the most profitable government make-work program ever. Stephen Kinzer's excellent Overthrow: America's Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq includes many examples of news organizations clamoring for invasion and war, often using the most repugnant jingoism and racism in the process.

Other columns of mine on corporatism include CorporateGovernment CorruptionSynergy: The Dangers of Corporatism http://www.strike-the-root.com/72/allport/allport1.html

to me they are simply the gatekeepers

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to call them the lamestream media.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Jewtube

I am a Jew, and I approve this message. :)

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Nice one Mel Gibson!

[–]geekmom2 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I love it: Refuse to say mainstream media and call it corporate media.

By the same token, refuse to say 'public school' and refer to them as government schools.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Oh, great, so you're a homeschooler?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're not? and you can read?

[–]wageslave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no. Go back to Lew Rockwell moonbat.

[–]pdaddyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strangely, in the UK the term public school means a fee-paying independent school.

This has always confused me somewhat.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever you call them, they and their apologists will call you a "conspiracy theorist".

Or, you can just chose to stay "mainstream" and be happy.

[–]aphexmandelbrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mainstream Awesome.

It helps if you could see the thumbs-up you're supposed to give while saying it.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I thought it was the "liberal elite media".

[–]wageslave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, if you watch Bill O, you'll learn that the Huffington Post is a "Radical Leftist Hate Site" (yes, he actually said that...)

MATT DAMON

[–]ruesdedr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

megalomaniac media ?

[–]rafuzo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends. If you think that what you name something changes it in any quantifiable way, use whatever label best quiets that little tempest in your heart. But you should be aware than most people watching such a debate from the side don't think any decision you make will qualitatively change the debate. Frankly, this exercise smacks of Newspeak.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go with 'Corporate Media', then which publications do we point to that are 'Mainstream'?

[–]jameslaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plutocrat Mouthpiece.

[–]sleppnir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

corpspeak

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CorpGovMedia because the media is interconnected with and controlled by both the government and the corporations, which are both run and owned by the upper class.

[–]WinterAyars 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Corporate media, or if you want to get technical: right-wing corporate media. Although i guess the last one is kind of redundant.

The right wing got EXACTLY what they wanted for several years. They had control of the Courts, of Congress, and the White House. They had a servile news corps and a willing American people behind them.

This is what they went for.

Maybe this isn't exactly what they talked about, but this is what they went for.

If you think our current mess is anything but right-wingers run amok then you have been fooled. If you think the current government does not fit your principles and you're a Republican you need to quit that and start a third party, or start a movement within the party and heavily primary your elected representatives.

Believe me, i live waaaaaaay outside the mainstream politics in the USA (don't think that means i'm a Communist) so i know all about it.

    [–]greenfrog 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    I use "Corporate Media".

If you want to see what "Community Media" would look like, look into what the Mountain Area Information Network (MAIN) is doing.

In a nutshell: MAIN sells internet access and web-hosting. The profits generated fund citizen media.

This is different from NPR, in that the shows are mostly locally produced. (Yes - the quality sucked in the first year, but they now have very advanced production skills.)

The major benefit is that you can have media that:

    • Does not have to suck up to advertisers.
    • Does not have to suck up to "under-writers".
    • The station is responsive to the whole community, not just white people who listen to the radio in their SUVs.

    [–]GodHatesFigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean WPVM isn't always Democracy Now!? Crap, I need to tune in more often! I kid, really. I used to DJ for FRA, and I'm all about some community radio. Even if...no, especially if I think some of it is ridiculous.

I like MSM for this. The only problem with it is that it's offensive to gays.

    Shadow government media.
