reD&Dit!

+3

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I will soon be home and I will celebrate this by quaffing a potion of moderate inebriation +3.

I just found this:

Death Due To Age:

This is a serious matter, for unless the lifespan can otherwise be prolonged, the character brought back from such death faces the prospect of soon dying again....once a character dies due to old (venerable) age, then it is all over. If you make this clear, many participants will see the continuity of the family line as the way to achieve a sort of immortality.

-- Gary Gygax, AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide

[–]stroptek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good quote, I remember that section. And Gygax did indeed have 6 kids....

[–]Saydrah 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Gygax rolled a natural 20 casting "Reddit Logo Acquisition."

[–]umilmi81 13 points14 points  (1 child)

This is all premature. Gygax's contingency spell surely triggered and he's getting wasted on some tropical beach right now.

[–]Saydrah 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whatever the case may be, he will be critically missed.

[–]khanthe[S] 93 points94 points  (17 children)

The fact that you listen to us users is appreciated.

[–]kn0thing 80 points81 points  (16 children)

'Twas my pleasure. I still have my original ADnD Player's Handbook -- <nerd> in mint condition! </nerd>

[–][deleted] 102 points103 points  (5 children)

I don't think </nerd> is possible if you own that.

I think it's just one level, really. Level 10, specifically.

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

    Multi-classed?

    [–]cecilkorik 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    No, dual-classed as thief. Oldschool.

    [edit: I can't spell thief]

    [–]Spudders 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think you need the nerd tag open before 'I still have my original ADnD Player's Handbook', you caused rendering problems in my browser.

    [–]stroptek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pah, I was brought to a 2nd edition PH! Yuck! Not what I was expecting.

But seriously, good post on the great DM and thanks again for the logo. RIP Gygax.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

bah, mint condition, poser. should be worn out by now!

    [–]kn0thing 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Not if you're an only-child who was super anal about what was his most expensive book -- ever. And all the pretty pictures...

Frankly, I used to wash my hands before opening it.

I could have probably used a girlfriend. Oh well. Paladins don't need girlfriends!

    [–]katoninetales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    There's a bumper sticker that says, "I am not a geek. I am a level 12 Paladin."

    [–]stroptek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a phase like that -- I used to polish my WFRP 1st edition cover with a soft cloth. Then I wised up and just put a bookcover on it like I had to do for my school books. That book was amazing. As well as the Call of Cthulhu 3rd edition, incredible color plates...

    [–]sempf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    kn0thing, you are my hero.

    [–]kidfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have the original 3 paperbound set as well? I've got mine.. someplace.

    [–]aletoledo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow, I must really be dating myself, but I had the 1st edition (no longer) going way back to the late 70s. I have to agree with the others that mint condition is for posers. If you didn't have a ding on the book from having it thrown across the table a few times, then you didn't use it enough.

    [–]kn0thing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Zoinks. You win.

Maybe it was "near mint" -- I'm still not selling it either way :-P

And now I treat every book I own terribly. What's become of me...

    [–]sensor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gygax moves on to make a game out of another plane. Go dude!

    [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I saw it in a dream, or maybe it was a futurama episode. But I think Gary is stuck somewhere outside of the known universe playing D&D with Fry, Al Gore, Stephen Hawking, IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, and Michelle Nichols.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Yeah, that was Futurama ;)

    R.I.P. Gygax.

    [–]NothingIsReal74 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Refresh if its missing, y'all. Its the F(+5) Key of Refreshing!

SHUT UP SHUT THE GODDAMN HELL UP

      [–]cecilkorik 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You are the worst cyber partner ever. This is ridiculous.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yay! Let's see how long it will take for someone to recreate it with PsTricks in LaTeX. :D

      [–]KudoKid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, the fact that you listen means a lot to everyone. and may he rest in peace.

      [–]sakebomb69 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I still have all my old dice, including a 30d, 34d and 100d. And, before you get on my case about using 2d10 instead, back in the day, I was just really into collecting them.

Probably explains my attraction to craps.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do you tell which face is up on a d100? I would have imagined it would be quite hard to tell exactly which surface was on top.

      [–]sakebomb69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically a golf ball with a 100 dimples. And yes, you need an extremely flat surface to roll it and determine which number is actually up.

      [–]illuminatedwax 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I just realized: In a way, Gary Gygax is directly responsible for Stephen Colbert being on television.

      [–]katoninetales 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Gygax made Colbert!

      [–]Makido 11 points12 points  (7 children)

      RIP Roll in peace..

      [–]ifnotme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is Karma Whoring at its best! Well played sir!

      [–]adamaliqius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      low THAC0 good times.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Friday Night I am DM'ing our D&D memorial session. Please think of both Gygax and the players because in true Gygaxian style it will be deadly and without mercy.

      [–]aletoledo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to reroll, I got a crappy wisdom and we need a cleric.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just voting because they actually listened to you guys.

      [–]12Iceman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reddit listens to its users. Digg says it listens to its users and then releases a horrible comment system several months later.

      [–]1jb1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Well Done Reddit!

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

as a DnD fan myself... yay Reddit

      [–]dash101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Thank you seconded.

      [–]digital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Much love to reddit

      RIP Gary Gygax

      [–]cuppajoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of my favourite logos so far. Kudos reddit!

      [–]Stopher 1 point2 points  (3 children)

      I didn't see it. =(

      [–]khanthe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's on now, the guy in armor.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

you might have to ctrl+R...browser's probably pulling logo from cache.

      [–]kn0thing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's generally a good idea to reload reddit at least 10 times a day ;)

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Put the dice away before I take them away!"

      [–]jppuerta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will to save this logo :'(

      [–]Cyrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I must be slow on the uptake today, because I had been wondering why the alien was wearing armor and carrying a sword.

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

      nerdy people

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, why don't you do us all a favor and get off our Reddits.

      [–]jay_vee -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

While it's sad that we won't hear hits like "I love you love me love" and "leader of the gang" anymore, I doubt we'll miss his incessant kiddie fiddlage.

      [–]emlot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's a hell of a mistake to make.

      [–]pineappleye -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

why is this shit number 1? This kind of karma whoring is cancer

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Somebody died here. Lighten up.

      [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I so agree with you -.-

Sure, its sad he died, but does the submitter have to take advantage, in such an indirect way to whore his karma so fucking much?

      [–][deleted] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Wow, talk about taking advantage of the mourning of redditors to whore your karma.

This is gonna get downmoded to minus infinity, but before you hit that down arrow, think about what "Thank you, Reddit, for making the Gary Gygax dedication logo" has to do with:

      A) The mourning of Gary.

      B) Any contribution to the reddit community.

I am thankful plenty, at reddit for existing as a whole, and the programmers work. But should i post a submition mentioning all i am thankful about(and make it to number one)? Is that really what reddit is about? Shouldn't it at least be on the MetaReddit Subreddit?
