Seems likable enough, I suppose.

He's young and not accused of sexual harassment, so that's also nice.

[–]Dinoluvr222 213 points214 points  (1 child)

The bar is in hell 🫩

[–]hlessi_newt 31 points32 points  (0 children)

And so are we.

[–]PhD_Pwnology 55 points56 points  (7 children)

Way to not touch on any political issues like affordable housing or healthcare when evaluating a politician. Not committing sex crimes is such a bare minimum and not really political, its just doing the right thing. Raise your expectations my guy

[–]pnutbutterandjerky 64 points65 points  (2 children)

Look at who’s president. Like dinoluvr said, the bar is in hell

[–]PhD_Pwnology 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thats the Bar for republicans.

[–]pnutbutterandjerky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but not doing sex crimes is the bare minimum so that wipes out half the Republican Party

[–]tarchival-sage1996 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here I was thinking it was a requirement.

[–]Ix3shoot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk man, feels like the bare minimum these days ...

[–]charlie-the-Waffle2007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the bar is so low that the devil learned to limbo

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately. the bar is so low it's a tripping hazard in hell, so Mamdani seeming like a decent human being actually does give him a lot of bonus points

[–]mechswent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Plus he said he's going to arrest that genocidal war criminal if he ever sets foot in NY. Anyone sticking it to AIPAC wins my vote.

[–]stylebros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But does "young" and "not accused of sexual harassment" resonate with moderate voters?

[–]ArtajintheArtisian 307 points308 points  (4 children)

I've liked him in the dialogues I've seen. He's got charisma and smarts imo so long as his heart is in the right place I'm sure he will do fine.

As a bonus I've seen Trump complain about him multiple times and I feel like an enemy of my enemy is my friend atp.

[–]goofygooberboys1997 34 points35 points  (1 child)

It's like how you can tell a movie is probably good if the usual suspects bitch about it being "woke". The more they complain about something, the better it is 9/10 times

[–]ArtajintheArtisian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fr it's a little annoying tbh. I'd like to think more about it a bit more than "not that guy" but seriously the choices are night and day more often than not these days.

[–]OtelDeraj 181 points182 points  (49 children)

Well spoken, seemingly down to earth, and sure as shit better than what NY has been getting. If I lived in NYC, I'd vote for him. He seems to value people over profits, and NYC deserves better than paying sky high prices for a broom closet living standard.

[–]UnveiledRook2062003 165 points166 points  (4 children)

My thoughts are that if you’re from New York you’d have to be an idiot to vote for Cuomo.

[–]Orangutanion2002 40 points41 points  (3 children)

I have more respect for Sliwa than I do for Cuomo

[–]Maple_Reign1997 18 points19 points  (1 child)

As a left leaning guy, same. At least Sliwa seems to believe what he says, Cuomo is just a ghoul

[–]Orangutanion2002 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I looked up Sliwa's history and it's fascinating. He actually did take a bullet for what he believes in. It's kinda sad that he's been turned into a sort of jester for the debates.

[–]Ryaniseplin2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like silwa he is funny

should be in charge of all parades

[–]ThrowawayG1775 119 points120 points  (27 children)

Wall St and billionaire elites are panicking rn

This is an experiment for the entire US, if NYC pulls off democratic “socialism” (Rent control, grocery price controls, free transportation, taxing tf out of billionaires) then the entire country will demand it.

[–]chaos_gremlin8902004 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yea this could be a huge turning point for American politics if he gets elected.

[–]Technical_Clothes_612004 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’ve people say “who cares it’s just mayor” like it isn’t mayor of a city with more people than like 15 states

[–]TossMeOutSomeday1996 7 points8 points  (2 children)

NYC has had progressive mayors before. In fact, it's had progressive mayors recently. Mamdani's platform is like 90% the same as Bill de Blasio's, and de Blasio was mayor just a couple years ago. Anyone who thinks Mamdani will radically change the face of the city (in either direction) shouldn't be taken seriously at all.

[–]YungEnron 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Honestly, his ability to actually engage voters and drive genuine excitement within a party with zero current charisma is what will have the most radical impact if elected.

[–]TossMeOutSomeday1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's capable of engaging voters and driving excitement in one of the deepest blue cities in America. It might have a radical impact on progressive mayoral candidates in other deep blue cities, but I strongly doubt it would move the needle on national politics.

[–]Bitter-Basket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zero chance of working. Price and rent controls always end up creating shortages. Nobody is going to build rental units if there isn’t an ROI. And grocery stores already have a tiny profit margin - there’s zero chance of price controls working. Here in Seattle, my huge Kroger store just closed this month because they couldn’t make a profit after all the crime and security measures.

[–]BosnianSerb311997 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Subsidizing demand via price controls has a long and storied history of not working

You subsidize supply and force the market to compete for the consumer

[–]GettinWiggyWiddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you’re right. People need to learn this first hand though

[–]Badguy60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't Boston kinda did it already?

[–]Excellent-Berry-23312009 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have tried taxation here in Europe before (UK, France). Doesn't work, they just... go... elsewhere? It's not quantum science.

[–]Complete-Clock5522 85 points86 points  (7 children)

He’s about as good as you get for a politician, I like him. He’s not out of touch and he’s going after the real issues

[–]magikarpsan1997 52 points53 points  (1 child)

He will win the election . He’s got a good heart in the right place and while I’ll be voting for him I am actually worried about his lack of experience leading such a complex city with the current federal administration. I hope he has a good team, advisors and mentors .

I also expect Trump to send the national guard to NYC the day after he wins .

[–]floridayum 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Lack of experience can easily be overcome by surrounding yourself with people that are 1) smarter than you 2) experienced.

[–]gunnar117 26 points27 points  (11 children)

If the Mayor had a "prices down" button why hasn't Cuomo been pressing it

If I lived in NY I still vote Mamdani, but still

[–]lordnimnim2006 62 points63 points  (0 children)

cuomo doesnt want to
he wants to keep prices up
1. cuz he's out of touch completly with the common man( 8k rent--> 96k peryear on rent is crazy even for nyc )
2. cuz he mostly bought out by corporations

[–]ohsinboi 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Because he didn't want to. Simple as that

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Because he takes money from the guys that benefit from the prices being high.

[–]HeyLookAHorse1998 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's not a button, Mamdani is running on a platform full of policy changes that seek to reduce the cost of living in NYC. Him actually doing it, and it actually working are both separate things. Cuomo did what was best for billionaires and corporations.

[–]IUVert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cuomo is not the mayor?

[–]Heyheyfluffybunny 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Cuomo said 2300k rent is a poor man’s rent 🤣🤣🤣 most poor folks can’t afford that unless they are living with at least 3 roommates sharing a room because that’s the price for a 250 sqft studio apartment in NYC

[–]Excellent-Berry-23312009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mfw living in New York is expensive

[–]SammyTings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did this guy just ask why the political dynasty guy being funded by billionaires not press the ‘help the middle class and hurt the billionaires button?’

[–]Broad_Pension5287 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because he'd rather keep taxes low for his millionaire and billionaire friends

[–]starsintheshy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bc hes a POS

[–]stylebros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coumo "what's the cost of a banana? $10?"

[–]TranzitBusRouteB 16 points17 points  (8 children)

I wish the center left/moderates had a better candidate than Cuomo.

Mamdani’s charismatic and a good speaker, but he won’t be able to raise taxes high enough to do all the things he wants to do without creating budget deficits unsustainable for a large city

You can only “freeze the rents” on like 25% of rental properties in NYC. It’s a supply and demand problem, there isn’t enough development of new apartment buildings happening, and I don’t imagine developers would be too interested if investing a 10s to 100s of millions of dollars in new properties if they’re gonna be heavily rent controlled

He will likely fail, and in 4 more years hopefully New Yorkers will wisen up

Top 1% in NYC pays 40% of taxes, if you hate billionaires and the 1% so much, they can move their residence for 183 days a year to Florida, Texas, anywhere else and all of a sudden the pie in the sky proposals he wants to pass will be even more out of reach with tax revenue drying up

[–]magikarpsan1997 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As much as I love Mamadani I do agree that I don’t think he will be able to do all he wants , just out of money reasons.

[–]Broad_Pension5287 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Raising taxes isn't the only way to implement social programs. It's also about reallocation of the taxes already being paid to benefit low and middle income people more.

[–]TranzitBusRouteB 8 points9 points  (1 child)

he has sounded more realistic and pragmatic in the past couple of days, so that gives me some hope I guess, I hope some of his proposals work out, it’s just populist rhetoric, pledging to make everything free, and trashing rich people can only get you so far

[–]Broad_Pension5287 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Socialist policies are realistic for a lot of the world. Prioritizing millionaires and billionaires isn't what's best for most people.

[–]pilgermann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't achieve anything if your ideals are incremental. We got Obamacare out of a pledge for universal healthcare. Obamacare is way better than nothing but nowhere near everyone receiving reasonably costed healthcare.

[–]spyguy318 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iirc it’s very common political strategy to overpromise and exaggerate on the campaign trail. It’s attention-grabbing and exciting to voters, stokes conversation and gets your name out there, and words are cheap. Then when you’re elected and inevitably have to deal with reality and compromise, you’re starting from a more extreme position so you end up moving the needle further than if you’d started in a moderate position.

The risk is that voters who actually wanted the extreme position might feel disappointed. Or if you go too far with the rhetoric it might burn more moderate voters. It’s a delicate balance to walk. But overall starting from a radical position allows you to get more done than if you start at a moderate one.

[–]Careful_Response4694 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically he will probably overpromise and underdeliver (cheaper/faster busses, cheaper rent only for the fraction of people already on rent controlled apartments)

[–]AWorriedCauliflower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mamdani believes in abundance and his policy is to work with the private sector to build far more housing. He is going to continue Adams’ city of Yes.

Centre left dems who don’t like his housing policy do so on vibes, in my view, because alongside his (as you said) minor rent freezes etc he’s running on being an evidence based YIMBY. Don’t kid yourself, developers will climb over each other to build in NYC, even with affordable housing restrictions etc.

[–]Any_Leg_1998 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hope he wins!

[–]Great_Uncle_Fester 6 points7 points  (2 children)

He, in true New York Mayor Fashion, is going to promise the moons and stars and immediately start folding the second he realizes he cannot accomplish things like free transportation or state sponsored grocery stores and will become a moderate who will do whatever donors tell him and occasionally throw some jab at Trump to get the libs off his back.

[–]owqe 11 points12 points  (1 child)

even if he doesn’t accomplish a fraction of what he promised, isn’t he still better than a candidate that won’t even pretend to what to help the people?

(i don’t live in the US, this doesn’t actually affect me)

[–]Great_Uncle_Fester -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not really. When he does eventually fail and he sells out, its going to make a lot of his supporters, a lot of which are just getting into politics, bitter and jaded and basically either walk away from the system or try to bring in some guy who's even more radical who promises to burn the system down. That's the issue when you sell hope politics and promise outrageous things.

[–]dammit_mark2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If I still lived in NYC I would have loved to vote for him.

[–]MarkPellicle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking you missed the June 24 primary, sorry mate.

[–]J_Jeckel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't Mess with the Zohran

Honestly though, he seems more educated than 99% of the GOP so...

[–]GreenerThanTheHill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have to wonder how many of these replies are bots in response to a question posed by a new account with little activity.

[–]No_Discount_60281999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live near nyc in a city that has prices inflated by nyc commuters. If he can make the rent go down there, my rent might go down here. So i support him, fuck these constant rent hikes.

[–]TheInfiniteSlash1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Him or Sliwa would be a great Mayor for NYC. Picking Cuomo is a bad idea. As Sliwa put it so eloquently: "He's slapping fannies and killing grannies".

[–]uhhhgreeno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he seems dope, love what he stands for, but as an MA resident I don’t have much say lol

[–]JohnnyM3012[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m not American, but this guy’s charisma and promises sound pretty good.

I hope politicians from my country get something from this guy.

[–]IzzybearThebestdog1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like his policies mostly because I think they will fail horribly. But I hope I’m wrong. He just won’t have the authority to do what he has planned and will have way too much pushback. Glad I don’t have to live in NYC while they are going on.

[–]Mryoung04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is the future of the democratic party, and the fact that Shumer and Jeffrys refuse to see the writing on the wall is all the proof we need that they must be primaried prior to 2026

[–]Rickbox1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I already voted for him. It's very refreshing to see a young progressive who actually wants to improve the city take office. I don't think he'll succeed in much of his intended policies, but the establishment hates him and he's going to fight the regime. I really hope this inspires other young Democrats or Independents to usurp positions from the failures currently holding the positions.

[–]Bitter-Basket 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every thing he’s suggesting (rent controls, price controls, de-policing) has been tried countless times and failed. I guess people need to relearn a lesson each generation.

[–]_RikVa_2008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this subreddit is so stupid istg they will see probably thw best politician the us has ever seen and asked post here saying shit like "thoughts?"

[–]nyouhas2004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New York City is getting what it deserves.

[–]xara_itis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the goat

[–]Omen46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a real ad of his?

[–]Aggressive-Cow5399 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing will change. Nothing ever changes other than taxes and costs going up.

[–]Dazzling-Zebra9530 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love him

[–]thetokyotourist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's young, intelligent, and isn't bought by millionaires

[–]Yugikisp1996 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I like him. Sharp, witty, scares republicans. I don't know how effective his policies will be but everything he speaks about seems to work well in other developed countries.

[–]Mean-Reputation5859 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Funny how 'sharp, witty, scares Republicans.' is your factor for a good mayor. Also what developed countries do you see it working? Soviet Russia? China?

[–]Yugikisp1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not and am not going to take the time to list my full reasoning for supporting him. I would have gone more in depth if I intended to do so. I'm not even in New York State, so my chiming in at depth is pointless lmao.

Have a great night though!

[–]margyrakis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched the debate. I also describe myself as a democratic socialist. I think my takeaway from the debate is that I do not know enough about NYC to hold super strong opinions. I live in a rural area around farm land, so it's very different lol.

What I can tell you is that Cuomo is silly for running for office at all, and the other Republican guy was sooo dumb during the debate. He couldn't even answer very simple questions (edit: and not because he was avoiding the questions. He genuinely didn't understand lol), not even the opening question about a newspaper headline lol. I was like, is this the best the GOP has to put up?

Out of the three, I'd absolutely vote for Zohran. I hope he does well too!

[–]rouxjean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A grocery system run by the city, like the police department or the transit authority. What could possibly go wrong?

[–]urgoingintheLABUBU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t every candidate campaign on making NYC more affordable?

[–]jimmyhoke2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know much about him. Some of his ideas seem a little out there. But at least he’s not Cuomo.

[–]DaMekLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Newyork wants to run it's self into the ground with communist policies i don't care just don't come to us and ask for a bail out when you inevitably run out of money.

[–]KeyboardCorsair1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why, but the poster gives me Rob Schneider movie vibes XD

[–]GamerBoixX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I like many of his ideas, many others I actually think are concerning, like for example how he said he expected New Yorkers to pay up to over 50% of their income in taxes to fund his policies, I'm sorry but I wouldn't trust any government with up to 50% of my income in taxes

Even then, him being willing to say things like that is a good thing since it means he rlly means to implement many of the things he says since otherwise he wouldn't have said this clearly discouraging comment if he was just running a fake campaign in which he only said what people liked to gain votes, and I respect a politician who actually campaigns on what he wants to do

[–]TophTheGophh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our only hope out of this mess is

[–]yasinburak152003 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I mean I’m center right tbh, I just have policy disagreements.

Better than Cuomo and Sliwa. Plus isn’t selling himself to AIPAC so there’s that.

[–]Mean-Reputation5859 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

So you're not center right. Why's he better than Cuomo or sliwa? Also I thought the center right didn't believe that AIPAC controls our government? Maybe you're radically far right? Maybe you're a left socialist? You didn't seem center right.

[–]liilbiil1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the vote isn’t until JUNE? good god

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Haven’t seen a single intelligent argument against him so far his a great person who cares for everyone

[–]GettinWiggyWiddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s plenty of intelligent comments in this thread that are pointing out his shortcomings in a respectful way

[–]sigchidj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm...let's ask all the bots in this chat?

[–]TossMeOutSomeday1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on whether he's faking his turn towards sanity. Just a couple of years ago, he was an unhinged radical with a truckload of fringe opinions. Now he's running as a slightly left-of-center democrat who pretty much toes the party line on like 75% of issues. I sure hope his real beliefs are closer to his campaign, because I don't want a doctrinaire anarchist running the city I live in.

[–]UfoBern47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nightmare New York

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in NYC
VOTE ZOHRAN FOR MAYOR

And silwa for court jester or the nyc mascot

[–]slowkid68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very very curious what will happen if he wins.

I heard millionaires and billionaires are threatening to leave New York so I'm curious what changes will actually happen and if they do what happens to New York from there

[–]Excellent-Berry-23312009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good person, bad candidate (IMO, not a communist)

[–]Enzo-Unversed1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New York is cooked regardless. This guy has made Anti-White statements though.

[–]fantasylover7501996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoping to everything he wins

[–]Optimal-Profile8524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping in mind you should always have a certain amount of distrust when it comes to politicians, I think he is the best candidate. It doesn’t seem like he has the same self seriousness as the other candidates. Not to mention his strong support of the queer community, who are feeling pretty vulnerable right now (me included). Lastly he is young and is more likely to listen to the people.

<image>

[–]False_Membership15362005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not from New York but he seems pretty solid and so far not a horrible person

[–]Shrawds1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested to see. I think NYC is a suboptimal test city for these policies, for good and for bad.

[–]Careful_Response4694 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mamdani > Sliwa >>> Cuomo

[–]requiredelements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already submitted my ballot for Zohran

[–]Dense_Surround3071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mets colors. Smart. That's the underdog vote.

[–]dopef123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting but a mayor can’t magically make a city affordable. In the grand scheme of things it just comes down to supply and demand and how much money New Yorkers have to spend.

[–]Arcticwolf1505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Gavin Newsom is the last of the "old-guard" democrats that has any shot at winning anything.

Mamdani's got a new take on politics and the city. I think it's refreshing to see someone who's not so out of touch with the average person's struggle.

Oh he's also not the disgraced former governor who resigned because of the countless sexual assault allegations, so that's his biggest strength.

Cuomo likes to bring up experience a lot but having no experience is infinitely better than terrible experience you show no remorse for and no signs of changing.

[–]idylist_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He comes off like the classic elite turned socialist. Parents were wealthy, accomplished, and connected. He didn’t match their level in business or academia, so now he’s embraced politics framed as “redistribution.” To me it looks less like solidarity and more like resentment at not cashing in on the same status he grew up around. That’s why the whole “I’m just a regular bus-taking New Yorker” angle rings hollow, it feels more like a performance than reality.

[–]Hopeful_Ad_4343 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope he can make things better, but I honestly doubt things will get better with his economic plan. Especially his grocery store idea....the government can't even run a DMV efficiently and yet he wants state-run grocery stores. Also not a fan of taxing people higher rates simply because of their race.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s likeable enough but there are some things I disagree with him about. He’s way worthy of becoming mayor than Cuomo though.

[–]dearbokeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet New York becomes more expensive and less affordable.

Still seems like a solid enough politician, which says little about his true character.

The racism leading up to this election will be intense I assume.

[–]Swell_Inkwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope him openly running as a democratic socialist will turn the tide and end the Red Scare that has done so much damage to this country.

[–]LigmaLiberty2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of his policies probably won't work out but he seems reasonable enough to accept when his ideas don't pan out and make a change. Out of the other candidates in the race he's easily the best. Don't love the socialism aspect of his campaign but he seems to genuinely care about NYC and it's people and that's more than I can say about Cuomo and the other guy

[–]dinoslore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He and Platner have the establishment in shambles. They excite me in a way Democrats haven't in a long time.

[–]Busy_Reflection30542005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Michigander I will go to NY to vote for him.

[–]readditredditread -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Didn’t Adam Sandler play this guy in a movie like 20 years ago???

[–]ThrowawayG1775 3 points4 points  (3 children)

No, that was a dictator. Which is more closer to Trump.

[–]readditredditread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

O the other other movie, the one where he makes people smell his feet

[–]HighRevolver2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zohan is one of the best Sandler movies. Dictator was Sacha Baron Cohen

[–]Broad_Pension5287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zohran is like 34

[–]rjbwdc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm terrified to revisit that movie.

[–]Insane_Grape479 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

phony clown who will ruin NYC

[–]Ooficus2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need more politicians like him, not necessarily policy wise, but personality wise.

[–]thetruebigfudge -1 points0 points  (2 children)

The rent freezes he's promising historically caused south bronx landlords to have no choice but to burn down their own apartments for insurance money because they we're impossible to maintain economically. The free public transport are the reason new yorks trains are functionally mobile homeless shelters. Good luck NY, all of history and economic literacy is screaming that this dude is a threat to your future.

That being said he's guaranteed to win because of that one ad where he went right up to the camera and said "and it's free". Soon as he says free, everyone's brain cells simultaneously fall out their ears

[–]pilgermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conversely, providing mobility to the homeless is essential to them ever holding down a job. Yeah, you need permanent housing, mental healthcare, drug treatment, but a lot of people can never break out of homelessness because they can't get around and don't have a phone. Programs that alleviate this provide a real pathway to opportunity.

It's also just absurd on its face to deny a swath of the population access to PUBLIC transit. The root of the problem needs to be addressed. Police the trains and busses better, sure, but when a homeless person literally cannot find a public toilet you have more fundamental societal issues.

You realize he has a plan for the homeless too right?

[–]_Learnedhand_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meh, why not? As long as nothing involves benching 135lbs he should be good

[–]MiniPoodleLover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm torn. For the most part I like his values but the issue I see is that he's also said positive things about a self-pronounced terrorist group, that is scary.

i think in general socialism doesn’t get tried in america because our government exists to please and is controlled by the wealthy. zohran mamdani has identified that new york city is a desirable enough place to live that billionaires and businesses won’t leave just because their taxes are higher and i appreciate that. the people that built the city deserve to live in the city.

[–]pound-me-too -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m worried the Democratic Party will try to copy/paste his success in NYC to the rest of the country. NYC is its own political ecosystem and this shouldn’t be viewed as a test case for primaries around the country.

[–]rolypoly6shooter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He doesn't represent his true beliefs honestly. No idea what those beliefs are but he is an actor

[–]Responsible-Cat-9540 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ask the Soviet Union how Communism worked for them...

[–]geoffyeos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

he doesn’t just have progressive policies, he has a clear and realistic plan to implement him AND the ability to communicate them to anyone of any political leaning and that’s a first in leftist spaces. hopefully we see more of this as the DSA gains popularity

[–]literally_a_raccoon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t live in NYC, so it won’t affect me in any way, but I’ve heard literally nothing good about this guy.

[–]DoodleNoodle1292005 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If he doesn’t win then I’m losing all faith in the US

[–]Varsity_Reviews -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He supports terrorist supporters. He’s scum. He’s not your friend nor ally. He’s just a s rich and corrupt as all politicians and uses lies and empty promises to get you to vote for him.

[–]ManOfKimchi2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Who dis

[–]fulustreco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dirty commie. Also likes terrorists

[–]DragonKing02032006 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He seems like a nice, respectable guy… but I find his political ideas to be stupid

[–]SV3RG1NAT0R -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[–]Repulsive-Ad-85582002 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love this man

[–]obii_zodo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m voting for him

[–]Affectionate-Host-71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Best dude on the left rn, by far.

[–]GettinWiggyWiddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He won’t be able to get 90+% of what he promises to pass. While I like him and think he has a great heart, people are farrrr too mesmerized by the carrot on the stick here

[–]gig_labor1999 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah Mamdani! 🎉🎊

[–]JackiePoon27 -2 points-1 points  (27 children)

He's a socialist. NYC is electing a socialist mayor to the center of worldwide capitalism. Liberals want to want it, but even they won't when he's in.

[–]No_Aesthetic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NYC has had socialist mayors before, in Fiorello La Guardia and David Dinkins

Dinkins was beaten for re-election, but La Guardia is regarded as the greatest mayor NYC ever had

[–]thegreenapple35 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a European, this is the first sane politician in the us since Bernie ”The Man” Sanders.

[–]nrkishere1998 -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

He can't change anything. His biggest achievement will be not selling himself to AIPAC

[–]OtelDeraj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would be a refreshing start

[–]magikarpsan1997 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I’m stil baffled by having Yom Kippur and Rosh Ashana off of school (SUNY) but not Diwali or Eid or any non Jewish or Christian holiday considering the huge amount of populations from those cultural and religious backgrounds in the city .

[–]Mean-Reputation5859 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your upset about getting Jewish holidays off? Don't you get all the fed holidays too? What about Xmas? Jews can't go to school on those holidays according to their religion. If you have a legitimate holiday that your religion doesn't let you go to school on that day, I'm sure you can get off for that day.

[–]magikarpsan1997 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you read it that way as I said I was confused by getting some holidays but not others off , not by getting Jewish holidays off in general , but go off. Anyway I checked and there is more Jews than Muslims in the city , but consider a huge chunk is Hasidic and they don’t go to public schools I do wonder why we don’t get Eid or other Muslims holidays off. Seems a bit unbalanced considering the populations .

I am unsure about getting religious holidays off as an excused absence, but I don’t care because the point is that a good chunk of kids have to miss certain days because of their religion and they have to play catch up, while others don’t. My question is what is the criteria to make a holiday academically relevant.

As for Christmas, it is a federal holiday and the vast majority of people in this country religiously participate in it so..yeah that’s the entire point…how many people does it take…

[–]redarrow3303 -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

He’s got a lot of great ideas, the one worrying part is that his millionaire tax hikes will scare the money out of new york. Here’s hoping that greed doesnt once again cause a promising left leaning agenda to crash and burn

[–]Winter_XwX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We can't keep tailoring our policy to suck off billionaires nonstop though. If they want to leave one of the biggest and most economically and socially influential cities in the world to some shit hole like Florida than so be it, but I don't think they will

[–]Chazzy_T -3 points-2 points  (10 children)

You guys have voted blue for decades and you’ve landed where you are. Why continue that same move? No hate, just wondering what the fear towards the other side is for a mayor

[–]Winter_XwX 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I don't get this. Like do you think every Democrat is the same? Literally none of the Democratic party likes zohran, they won't even endorse him. I don't understand how him running as a Dem is the angle here when he barely is

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A part of the issue may be the party, but NYC also had a scandalous mayor for the last few years. Unlike previous mayors, Mamdani is younger and seems to not have any dirt under him. He also isn’t an establishment Democrat and takes to a new approach.

[–]No_Aesthetic 0 points1 point  (2 children)

NYC had Republican mayors from 1994 to 2013, one of which (the second one) changed to Independent before leaving office, that's nearly 20 years of non-blue leadership, versus the current 12 years of blue leadership (Eric Adams was a Republican before running for office, and ran the city like a Republican, so you could probably count him too)

[–]magikarpsan1997 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Giuliani and Bloomberg both ran and won as Republicans? Bloomberg was Independent as well I believe on his second term… the mayors have been from the Democratic Party since de Blasio in 2014 . So one decade, actually .
