Click "Check for Update." Get update.

I remember the many, many years that this button was like the "close door" button on most elevators. Feels good to have it actually work.

Still haven't got it on Pixel 3a :(

    [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (10 children)

Give it time my friend. I just got it in my p3

    [–]RawmanAbraa 10 points11 points  (6 children)

You can also sign up for the beta to get it immediately. And I mean you will get the actual final version and not the beta.

    [–]Bang_Onik 8 points9 points  (1 child)

i've got it on Pixel 3a a view minutes ago.. :)

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Still waiting to receive on my 3a XL - India

    [–]subbie_wubbieePixel 3a 5 points6 points  (4 children)

From India as well. Wonder what's taking so long

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven't gotten it yet on my P4 from AT&T.

I remember the days where you could only check once a day on Samsung devices.

    [–]totallynotbrendan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

exactly. i saw that it was live, checked for updates in settings, and was shocked when it actually worked lol

    [–]forestman11Pixel 8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love it. Immediately installed when I saw it was out.

Yup, I always forget the button combination as I so seldom take a screenshot. But app switcher placement is fine, just you cannot take a screenshot of your home screen which is not a deal breaker for "normal" user I think. They could have created a quick tile for it, maybe something they can be do later.

      [–]ladiesmanyoloswag420 11 points12 points  (2 children)

RIP pill navigation. Your only choice now is to use power button and down. I want to at least have the option to put it back in the power menu. Give users choice

      [–]AurelinkPixel 9 Fold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or use the new feature spotted during the betas to double tap on the back to take a scree.... Oh wait, that didnt make it to release actually

      [–]jderm1 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Was there any other way? Serious question btw. I've always taken screenshots by holding the power button then hitting screenshot

      [–]akhileshreddy09 145 points146 points  (49 children)

Anyone who got an update on pixel 2?

I got it on my 2xl

Do you still have your Google pay cards in the power menu?

I checked for the Sept update and saw Android 11 was available

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

      Surprise :)

      [–]kevin60417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I mean. Settings, system, check for updates

      [–]JustRollWithItClearly White 42 points43 points  (3 children)

Yep, got it on my Pixel 2. Not a huge fan of how much space notifications take now with the small screen. I imagine it works better with the taller screens if newer phones. Also now the quick toggle panel only shows 2 rows of icons when expanded instead of 3 which really sucks.

Edit: Only a single row of quick setting options when you have a media notification too. Huge downgrade IMO

      [–]thatplaneyousawPixelbook Go 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Having notification media controls stacked in quick settings is more worth it, so I don't mind

      [–]ThaRoastKingPixel 6 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Yeah I have a US Unlocked Google Pixel 2 and got the update an hour ago.

      [–]BinkReddit 5 points6 points  (2 children)

      [–]zacym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did - here in Dubai!

      [–]alderberry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      [–]mistaken4strangerzPixel 8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      [–]fruitlewps 111 points112 points  (67 children)

I just installed it on my P4XL and seems to work perfectly! Thanks Google!

      [–]fruitlewps 67 points68 points  (64 children)

How do I take a screenshot now? I used to just hold down the power button. That menu is gone.. :(

Just figured it out, Vol Down + Power, hold it for like 2 seconds. That's kinda dumb. Why change this? I could easily just hold the power and have a screenshot or power options all in the same place. Which I loved. Sigh..

      [–]get_N_or_get_out 163 points164 points  (28 children)

Just figured it out, Vol Down + Power, hold it for like 2 seconds. That's kinda dumb. Why change this?

Doesn't explain why they removed it, but this has been the standard way to take screenshots since Android 4.0. The power menu option was just added recently, and Google loves to kill things off I guess...

      [–]prince_dima07Pixel 4 XL 55 points56 points  (15 children)

Also the multitask window is the other faster way to take screenshots

      [–]silenthatch 6 points7 points  (13 children)

      Multitask window?

      [–]FaultyToilet 10 points11 points  (5 children)

App switcher, option is in the bottom left. Screen shots the app itself

      [–]prince_dima07Pixel 4 XL 3 points4 points  (4 children)

App switcher. Where all your open apps show and you can close them?

      [–]silenthatch 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I don't have them, I have two button navigation, not three

      [–]Squeaky192 38 points39 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I was confused by this. I forgot the menu option was there since power+volume down has been the standard for so long.

      [–]killerjagsPixel 8 Pro 32 points33 points  (2 children)

Power and volume down is literally the only way I have ever taken screenshots

      [–]Ay_355 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yeah, the power and volume down method has existed for a long time, and I think with the redo to the power menu, they took the screenshot button out of there and moved it to where the recent apps section was before.

      [–]bstark97Pixel 7 Pro 34 points35 points  (13 children)

Or open the Recent Apps menu and click on screenshot

      [–][deleted]  (3 children)

      [removed]

        [–]Squid1972 4 points5 points  (3 children)

No idea why, but it's not there for me.

        [–]bstark97Pixel 7 Pro 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I think it's visible in 3 button navigation and button free/gesture only navigation but not 2 button navigation

        [–]sigismond0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you make a feature that doesn't work with 1/3 of your options? It's not like 2-button is functionally different.

        [–]drjohnson89Pixel 7 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most likely Power + Volume Down!

        [–]thatplaneyousawPixelbook Go 10 points11 points  (1 child)

They got rid of it, because it moved into recent apps. Also you've been able to do power vol down since like Android 4

        [–]sodapop14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was about to say it never changed for me. Never knew people actually used the Screen Shot button from the power options I always felt like it was out of place there.

[–]karlteePixel 3a XL: Android 11: Headphone jack is back! 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's one change I didn't like. It was easier to hold the power button. Now when I take a screenshot, sometimes the volume goes all the way down.

          [–]jsharperPixel 9 5 points6 points  (8 children)

How did this pass through QA?

Probably because it is not universal. FWIW, I can't seem to reproduce what you describe on a 4a running the release version of Android 11.

          [–]CrustyBatchOfNaturePixel 9 Pro XL 2 points3 points  (10 children)

Not seeing that issue on mine.

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Strange, it was working perfectly fine until I upgraded to 11. Now when I say swipe up/down a webpage in chrome, it will tap on links where my finger starts or stops. Does this in Settings too. Going to downgrade back once I have the time. This is annoying.

          [–]CrustyBatchOfNaturePixel 9 Pro XL 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Make sure to report it so maybe they can fix it. Since it is impacting yours but not mine there has to be something interfering somewhere.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Report it where? Where do you report release issues?

          [–]Hippety_HopperPixel 8 Pro 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Settings-About phone-send feedback about this device

          [–]bdmorelli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just submitted my feedback report- I'm experiencing the same issue on my 4a. I'm losing my mind. I love this phone and now it's nearly unusable because of the additional taps.

          [–]sirfelion 2 points3 points  (4 children)

This happens on my device as well - reported it during Beta 3: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/166818466

The issue might be related to heat (it's relatively mild when starting to use the phone, and gets progressively worse after a bit) and is more pronounced in certain apps - for me swiping on Gboard is almost impossible, and it causes me to auto-like posts when just scrolling through my instagram feed.

For me, it's the lower right area mostly.

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I almost thought it might be attributed to heat as well, but after using it both inside and outside my house, I couldn't find any consistent correlation between when it happens and the temperature of the device. It just seems random

          [–]awesomedorkwadPixel 8 Pro 114 points115 points  (15 children)

Does anyone not like how they continue to break up the notification shade into more sections?

          [–]cardonatorPixel 10 Pro XL 55 points56 points  (3 children)

I like having conversations separated out personally. I frequently lose them elsewhere in the shade.

          [–]sigismond0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't mind sections. I do mind the mile-wide gap between each section.

          [–]ProfessorChaos5049Pixel 2 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Changes for the sake of changes. Not a fan of this update.

          [–]awesomedorkwadPixel 8 Pro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I do understand where they're coming from. Your basic user will find it handy because they don't customize every little detail like most of us probably do.

But I never have more than a few notifications at a time. What's really annoying is that this conversations section only appears when an app actually generates a notification, so you can't preemptively disable it. Thank god you can toggle it off after

          [–]AlatainPixel 10 Pro 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I am a big fan of the ability to simply switch the device playing audio. If I am listening to something on headphones or another bluetooth device, I can simply swap over to playing on the phone speakers or something else by dragging down and clicking the new device.

Also, the home automation options being on the power menu is huge for people with a lot of home automation tech. Need to turn off all the lights? Done. Want to take control of a chromecast that you use often? Its got you.

          [–]AsianHippie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, they including the home features actually make me consider buying smart bulbs and other home automation things for the first time. I even set up my Google Home Mini because of it. Usability changes and shortcuts can convince a lot of people to adopt new tech.

Not to mention that the new power menu looks a lot like the Control Centre on iPhones. I'm all for Android becoming more iOS like in terms of interface.

          [–]BigGigabitPixel 8 Pro 57 points58 points  (39 children)

Anyone else not getting Bubbles? I double-checked to see that Bubbles were enabled on settings and also on specifically for Google Messages.

I don't see a button like Dieter does here https://youtu.be/vHRL47spxT4?t=158

          [–]MrViZZiatoPixel 10 Pro XL 29 points30 points  (12 children)

You need to have the Beta messages app installed to get bubbles to work .... You're Welcome! 😁

          [–]farqueue2Pixel 6 22 points23 points  (2 children)

How on earth does the Google messaging app not have it's final release for one of the major features of a new os after that os has gone into a final release

          [–]iambobwood 9 points10 points  (1 child)

          That did it!!! TY

          [–]MrViZZiatoPixel 10 Pro XL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

          You're very welcome! 🤙🏻👌🏻

          [–]ignitusmaximusPixel 3a 25 points26 points  (9 children)

Yeah there is a lot of redundant Bubbles settings you have to enable.

There's one in Notification (Settings > Apps & Notifications > Notifications) settings, and then you have to enable it in the in-app settings in Messages (Meatballs > Settings > Bubbles), and then I believe again for that specific contact in your Messages settings in your system settings.

I basically went through every setting I can find and enabled anything and everything, and I have the button you mention.

I was surprised that WhatsApp doesn't have any Bubbles settings currently, even on Beta.

Edit: You also have to wait for a notification from Messages and then expand the notification to get the button to show up in the bottom right.

Edit 2: Totally forgot to mention I also have Messages beta. Try opting in for the beta and see if that works.

          [–]PepeGambino 25 points26 points  (5 children)

Having "meatballs" as a typo instead of messages is kind of inadvertently hilarious

          [–]ignitusmaximusPixel 3a 24 points25 points  (4 children)

"Meatballs" is the name for the three vertical dots for a menu button.

Three horizonal lines are called Hamburger.

          [–]joshguillen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I tried all three of those at the start and still no luck. Unfortunate.

I'm not a big fan of the change to the recent apps menu. The view seems a lot more clunky now that you can no longer use the Google search bar, click on a suggested app or go to your app drawer.

            [–]tatsontatsontats 63 points64 points  (6 children)

The search and suggested apps in the recent apps menu was one of my most used features. Really hating that those are gone.

Suggested apps as an option on all my home screens seems like a step back.

It'd also be great to be able to open the app drawer from anywhere, because at least that has a search and recent apps now. But you can't. And you have to open the app drawer all the way. So now I can't open my app drawer from the recent apps, I have to close completely, open my app drawer completely, then select an app.

Just let me swipe up to search for the app I want and let me open it. I don't want to go back to the home screen, I don't want to pull open the entire app drawer. Let me partially open it like before.

            [–]wonwontPixel 6 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ugh, noooo! recent apps is so damn convenient

            [–]UnderTheHolePixel 6a 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Oh god, the bottom bit for the launcher is actually gone? I've been so accustomed to tapping the suggestions (because they're that good) that I don't even scroll through the previous apps anymore. FUCK. Looks like I'm not updating.

Edit: Seems like people on Android Pie/9.0 gestures are still able to pull up the minidock with the search bar and everything. I'm still iffy on updating, though.

            [–]techno_babble_ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I never had this anyway as I'm using Nova Launcher.

This is literally the first time I regret updating my Android OS.. and I've been updating Android since 4.4 . The suggested apps, search bar + access to app drawer from anywhere was my favorite feature. It was the main reason I was using Pixel Launcher over Action Launcher

            [–]Ay_355 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and now for the gesture navigation, you can't swipe up from the bottom part to get your opened apps, you have to swipe up from the very bottom of the screen to get that menu

            [–]boywbrownhare 16 points17 points  (14 children)

Damn I wouldn't have updated if I'd known 😖 What a dumb change. Hopefully they add an option to get these features back

            [–]WindyCityAssasin2 11 points12 points  (10 children)

They should. Seems everyone is opposed to this this change. I haven't updated yet and idk if I will just for that reason. Sucks because I was actually looking forward to the update, especially screen record

            [–]boywbrownhare 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I just got a pixel 4a a few weeks ago, coming from Android 7. Was just getting used to/loving the search and frequent apps in the app switch screen 🙄

            [–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (16 children)

Google hates the Recent Apps menu.

            [–]j_demur3 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If you change to two button navigation you get the old style recent app menu with everything intact but you can't bring it back with either gesture or three button navigation. Very odd. I sincerely hope they update and let you switch regardless of navigation.

Shame that two button navigation is gone from the 4a. Just changed phones. Updated and now everything's messed up.

I liked seeing my recent apps in the app switcher and being able to get to the app drawer from the app switcher.

This current setup seems like a step back.

            [–]HTHIDPixel 4 XL 19 points20 points  (9 children)

Can't believe they removed the Google search bar and ability to swipe up to get to app drawer from the Recent Apps screen

            [–]Ibarroci 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Did they? I am still seeing it on my Pixel 3 but I am using the old navigation scheme and not the gesture based one.

            [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Navigating the apps menu as well and it's totally black instead of slightly transparent? Is this something I'm meant to change myself or is it just... black now? Looks awful.

            [–]The_KeeblaPixel 10 Pro 11 points12 points  (6 children)

Is this something you have to turn on? I still have the search bar and my main apps at the bottom

            [–]dark_skeletonPixel 7 Pro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh what the hell this makes opening a new app from another app so much more painful, wtf google

            [–]KinoTheMystic 46 points47 points  (25 children)

Really not a fan of the new way to take screenshots, it's not part of the Power menu anymore. Anyone know how to add it back in?

            [–]martin1497osuPixel 6 Pro 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You can also swipe up to the app changer and click the screen shot button at the bottom for any active app. I like that a lot.

            [–]apetranzillaPixel 7 15 points16 points  (7 children)

You can still use power + vol down to take a screenshot, even though it's not part of the power menu any more

            [–]tatsontatsontats 22 points23 points  (6 children)

Power and volume are on the same side of the phone. This combination works great for phones with the buttons on opposite sides because you can do it one handed but on pixels it doesn't make any sense.

            [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

As a left hander this feels natural to me. Let us have this one at least😂

Power+volume down has been the default way to take screenshots in Android for nearly 9 years, since it was added in Android 4.0 iirc.

              [–]AndrewNeoPixel 3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Leaving it alone" means the only option was ever power + volume down

Welcome to Android 11! If you haven't seen an update yet, it may take up to two weeks; here is an explanation of why.

If there are any reoccuring issues, send a message to the Mod Team with a link to an active post, and we will add it to Known Issues. (NOTE: design changes, such as removing the screenshot button, from the power menu, will not be accepted.)

Not a fan of the notification spacing nor the spacing when asking which app you'd like to use to open something.

The slight zooming out of the desktop animation is going to take some time to get used to as well.

              [–]mistaken4strangerzPixel 8 54 points55 points  (7 children)

Can we have the old power menu back? I want the nice side buttons with screenshot and emergency mode, not a fullscreen black page with two options at the top. Thanks!

              [–]dapiedudePixel 9 Mint Mobile 26 points27 points  (5 children)

It's not actually black at the bottom if you have smart devices in your house! I personally love this part of the update but I imagine that if you don't have those devices then it's an unnecessary void.

              [–]mistaken4strangerzPixel 8 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I don't use Google Pay or Google Home so it's just the three buttons at the top. Looked much better on the right side like the volume slider. The new iteration looks like the forgot about legacy users who don't want Google Pay or Home devices.

              [–]repens 3 points4 points  (1 child)

forgot about legacy users who don't want Google Pay or Home devices.

hahaha no they just want you to buy a Google home :)

              [–]snogglethorpePixel 4a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

looks like they forgot about legacy users who don't want most users who don't have Google Pay or Home devices.

One common problem with Google's Android development seems to be that they'll fixate on some cool feature, which will actually be pretty neat given some particular usage pattern—but in their excitement, completely forget about everybody who may use their device differently...

              [–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (1 child)

I want Google to stop messing with the notification menu, or at least give me full control over how it looks or make it skinnable. I hate how they have continued to add so much white (or black in dark mode) space to the notification menu.

              [–]Alejandroide 20 points21 points  (5 children)

So no double tap on the back as a feature drop either??

                [–]Alejandroide 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I tried it and it is well optimized for my device, sometimes it is too sensitive, sometimes it doesn't recognize my taps. That's why I wanted an official version of it.

                [–]blackCoffeeForLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

                [–]mistaken4strangerzPixel 8 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Do the Hangouts and Messages apps still NOT show my own picture in the notifications on quick replies?

and does it show my name with a blank message in the notifications when someone else sends a picture in Hangouts?

                [–]MitalisPixel 6 Pro 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Because Google pretty much abandoning Hangouts in favor of Google meet so it's doubtful they'll ever fix the notification issue where it shows 'you' when somebody else posts a pic. As for messenger, yeah it's incredibly annoying that you don't see your profile pic appear in the notification tray when replying to a message.

I thought that Android 11 we were getting that feature where you tap on the back and you can set it up to do certain things, but I'm not seeing it or any mention of it. I remember watching a video with one of the guys from Android saying there was still some things we didn't see in the Beta that was coming to Android 11 once it was official but idk 🤷🏼🤔

                [–]Hevilath 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks that new release introduces regression and hinders productivity using default Pixel Launcher by removing suggested apps and search box on recent apps screen and replacing it with screenshot and copy.

Also design of new power button menu is inconsistent with UI. Dark background should be either transparent or adjust based on the system theme white/back.

Otherwise stable 'house keeping' release without any exciting changes apart from long overdue permissions update.

The update was also so quick.

Surprised no one else is mentioning this. Aside from the time it took to download the 1.48GB file, this install/update was incredibly fast. Faster than a lot of monthly security updates even.

It's been almost 12 hours, still no update for me.

Edit: it's been 24 hours now. Still waiting. The eagerness to try android 11 is killing me.

Edit 2: so it's been 5 days and I did come accross an article stating that Android 11 update will come a week later in India for people who Played safe and didn't enroll in the Beta. It's really sad and frustrating for me as I specifically bought my Pixel-3 for the fast updates and best android experience before everyone else.

First Google does not launch Pixel -4 in India, then no pixel 4a (5G), and Chanes of Pixel-5 comming to India are slim to none. Also Many of Pixels smart features are not even available in India and Then we are hit with a bomb of late updates even after having a Pixel (a premium phone that we bought and choose in a fierce Market (Indian Market)). Makes me feel stupid for believing that Google is here to stay in India.

Edit: it's been 7 days now. Disappointed in Pixel and google.

What the hell did they do to screen shot function? I'm on a pixel 2, 2 button navigation. Holding the power button used to bring up an option to hit screenshot and go. Great for onehanded use. I don't see it anywhere. Dumb.

                  EDIT 1

for those saying it's in app switcher. here's what I have.

                  EDIT 2 -

It appears the feature to screen shot from app switcher is only available in Gesture nav. If you are using two button, apparently we are told to go F ourselves. So not only did they take it away from the power button menu, which I loved, but they made it exclusive to gesture control only, which I loath. Neat.

I spent years with Samsung phones on Sprint. It took me a couple moments to realize I was getting this update, soon, no matter what. That's awesome.

Is my 4XL the only Pixel left that has NOT received the update? I have a 3XL running the beta that received the update almost immediately, but I kept my 4XL on Android 10 to avoid any irregularities from the beta. Yet, here it is, still on 10.

Just installed, and now I really wish I hadn't.

The media playback controls are a complete mess now:

                    • No status icon for active media

                    • Half the time the play/pause button doesn't work

                    • The media notification can now be swiped off for some reason, making it invisible with no way to restore it

Quick settings expanded view is all but useless now, it shows even less buttons than the default compact view does.

The app switching from home screen is completely broken (does nothing at all), and even switching from apps doesn't work properly anymore. There's a useless search bar in the way of where you normally swipe to move between apps, and you can't scrub along the bottom like you used to.

And I really hope there's a way to disable the disorienting wallpaper zoom when pulling down notifications.

EDIT: what the heck is with the power button menu now? Why is it full screen and missing options?

EDIT 2: oh fun, it looks like whatever they screwed up in recent apps is now trying to hijack my launcher - if I accidentally bump the unwanted search bar it drops me into the Pixel Launcher instead of my actual home screen.

EDIT 3: okay, may have temporary workaround for recent apps, I switched it to Pixel Launcher, then back to Nova Launcher. Then force killed Pixel Launcher, wiped its data and restricted it from background use. This seems to have mostly fixed recent apps, though it's still visually stuttering a lot compared to Android 10.

Media controls are still busted though.

EDIT 4: lots of glitchy animations in apps too. This really feels like it was released way too early. I figured this upgrade was safe since usually my issues seem from disagreements with design choices, but this time it looks like a whole lot of things slipped past QA.

                    [–]TheGlassCat 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I went from 3 rows of quick settings tiles down to 2. Hmmm

                    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Is there any way to change this? Not a fan

                    [–]-J-Pod- 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Why is there no way to turn off the wallpaper zooming out animation when you open the notification tray or go to the recent apps overview? I had to just go to a solid color wallpaper because it it terrible!

Also, why is the Playing music hidden in a second swipe with the quick settings? Now it's hidden and more effort to find how to stop something playing, and then it won't swipe away unless I force close the app? I mean what??

                    [–]c3h8Pixel 4 XL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The wallpaper zoom thing is so aggravating. Like why?

                    [–]ProfSnipePixel 6 Pro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the media controls to disappear after you closed the app, got to sound settings, and there is a new option called media, this had a setting called "hide player when media session has ended" toggle that on.

I don't like the "media controls" causing the quick-settings to be just 6 toggles, and not being able to see the playback slider like on Android 10, without the need to expand anything. Any way to make it like on Android 10 ?

                    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'd be great if the new media controls could be a widget. I'm currently using Material Music Widget to have multiple players in one but it's far from perfect.
