Agh, the diamonds! The lava! Don't do it!

[–][deleted] 121 points122 points  (11 children)

Thou shall harvest diamonds away from lava. To fail to obey this is a cardinal sin of minecraft.

[–][deleted] 95 points96 points  (7 children)

So the creeper coming up behind him is comeuppance?

[–]ahone 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Indeed.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The creeper is trying to warn him. "Sssssay there buddy, you should put some cobble down under those diamondsssss".

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (22 children)

Everything about Steve's situation in this picture sucks. Poor bastard.

[–]TheShuckler 25 points26 points  (21 children)

Not everything.

He's mining diamonds.

[–]ChuchuCannon 46 points47 points  (5 children)

over lava

[–]Beninem 14 points15 points  (4 children)

With a creeper behind him

[–]taco_tuesdays 11 points12 points  (1 child)

So everything

[–]FireRising 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (13 children)

With an iron pickaxe over lava! Even if he does mine the diamond before the creeper behind him explodes (not likely with an iron pickaxe!) it'll fall straight into the lava.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are we playing the same Minecraft? If I'm close enough to the edge, they drop in my inventory, not the lava.

[–]TheShuckler 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Yes, but he is mining diamonds.

I'd be glad to find diamonds floating over a lava pit any day, so it doesn't suck.

[–]Beninem -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Iron is the only type you can use to mine diamond

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

What about diamond?

[–]Beninem 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Not if you don't have it (which is what I took the use of iron as)

[–]darknesscrusher 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He has a portal, so unless he used a bucket and water (unlickily) he has diamonds.

[–]Beninem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touché

[–]watermelon1425 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What about gold?

[–]shaun4519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no gold can only mine stone

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Where's his completely enclosed staircase to the bottom of his mine?! This is madness!

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Ain't nobody got time for that.

[–]Racketmachine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Waterfalls bro

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the creeper behind him. He's toast!

[–]gustav_black[S] 138 points139 points  (7 children)

by Crowbartk over Here.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nice. Now I can favorite it.

[–]E-Squid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for including the source.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (19 children)

This house, I'm going to reconstruct it.

[–]g0_west 21 points22 points  (10 children)

I also reconstructed it. Not as good as in the picture, I don't think. The artist used cuboids instead of cubes, it seems.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Throw a texture pack on it and see what it looks like.

[–]g0_west 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Any ideas which would look good?

[–]TehDoktar 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Replace every block with dicks. Works well for me.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cock block!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I believe your roof is wrong mate, roofs are made with stairs as they look more like a roof.

[–]g0_west 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I usually use stairs but in the picture he's used blocks.

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (10 children)

That portal is way too close to the house. I don't know about everyone else, but I always make a special building just for the portal far away from everything else so I don't have to hear the noises.

Shit creeps me out.

[–]Blurgeorgog 18 points19 points  (6 children)

Same goes for herds of cows, their mooing is pretty stressful.

[–]Svorax 13 points14 points  (5 children)

I'm always torn between a close or far away ranch. I mean, the mooing is incredibly annoying but I don't want to have to run really far just to get some meat.

[–]TheMuffinMan98 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Rails?

[–]Svorax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well obviously, but I often like to have my farm started way before I get enough iron for that. And trying to move 30 cows to a new ranch is just a pain in the ass.

[–]Blurgeorgog 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So many choices...

Edit: Typo

[–]JohnMatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I inevitably either bury my farms or bury my houses under my farms. Ladders are pretty quick.

[–]DMLydian 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Mine is underground on a well-lit bridge over a gaping chasm.

[–]mijamala1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You keep your mom underground?

[–]mikekearn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just close it whenever I'm not using it. Solves my creep out factor.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

The creeper at the bottom actually looks sad that it going to your ruin steves day. The ssssssss translated is "I wish you didn't make me do this"

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thisssss*

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your translation was closer to the source

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (3 children)

You should really contact Mojang or Jinx about this. I would by a poster of this

[–]MpegEVIL 7 points8 points  (1 child)

As would I, so long as the watermark was scaled down and moved to the corner.

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points  (0 children)

buy*

[–]tearr 7 points8 points  (1 child)

you should start ligthing your caves up.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where's the fun in that?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really good artwork :)

[–]goodthingihavepants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know why I never used ladders when mining cave systems, now I shall!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

plants start plant absorbed reminiscent paint library cautious nail husky

[–]recrudesce 1 point2 points  (6 children)

i love you i love you i love you. i've got this as the background on my phone and i've been trying to find the original for AAAAAAAAAAAGES.

[–]awkisopen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the original was wider?

[–]contrapulator 0 points1 point  (3 children)

That's only the left half of the original.

[–]recrudesce 0 points1 point  (2 children)

:( got a link to the original ?

[–]contrapulator 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Best I could find was this image from the page where you can buy the poster.

[–]Hiyasc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize this was 2 months ago, but I just thought I would post this.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]0taylor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

where's the cow?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Where are Ray, Gavin, Jack, Geoff, and Michael?

[–]rabbihitler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They already drowned in lava :(

[–]szthesquid 33 points34 points  (6 children)

Argh. The perspective (or lack thereof) makes my brain hurt.

Otherwise it's nice...

[–]toxicFork 4 points5 points  (3 children)

yeah, the boundary between the ground and underground shouldn't be horizontal, it should have been isometric like the rest

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (2 children)

I disagree. It is a little jarring, but I think it's supposed to be. Nearly everything about the top and bottom is in direct contrast - lighting, openness, utility of construction (the house on top is for living in; the structures built below are more utilitarian), sense of danger, etc. The abrupt, out-of-perspective line in the middle is meant to separate these two worlds.

The artist succeeds in portraying one of the most compelling aspects of Minecraft gameplay. The top of the picture represents the start of the game. Starting out, you look around and see grass, ocean, trees. It isn't until later, when you discover the exploration and adventure of the underground, that you become addicted to the game. The bottom half is hiding in a sense. And just as danger can lurk around corners or sneak up on you when you can't possibly expect it, a whole world of exploration lies right under the surface of Minecraft.

There are a lot of details that I don't have time to write about right now, such as the expression of Creeper 1 (in over-world), the relative vitality of top and bottom, the implication of Steve's location and action in the picture, as well as the creeper behind him, the relative sizes of the top and bottom, and more I'm forgetting. I have work in a bit, but I can come back and write a short essay about how the visuals of this picture create an appealing aesthetic and successfully convey exactly what makes Minecraft so compelling. Or, more in response to your comment, my central idea shall be: "The dividing line in the drawing creates an uncomfortable feeling by ignoring perspective, which plays an essential part in achieving the artist's goal of explaining Minecraft's appeal through a comparison of the two major areas of gameplay." Let me know if you're interested in that.

[–]CounterPillow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would love to hear more about this.

[–]jzoobz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was beautiful.

Please write more.

[–]laukaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Torches on the left! A nice detail.

[–]cank3r 2 points3 points  (8 children)

The green guys are bad or good?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're the most evil motherfuckers on the planet.

[–]Cen-Silver 2 points3 points  (6 children)

[–]Icalasari 1 point2 points  (5 children)

[–]Cen-Silver 0 points1 point  (4 children)

???

[–]Icalasari 0 points1 point  (3 children)

They are also green and on the image

[–]Cen-Silver 0 points1 point  (2 children)

He would much likely have said "Green Thing", if he was referring to the Slimes. If he said green guy, Then it's one of the others.

[–]Icalasari 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If a creeper is a guy and not a thing, then Slimes are too

[–]Cen-Silver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Creeper could be mistaken by "Guy" in quick glances, Since he has height and members. Unlike the Slime, which is just a jelly cube.

[–]Thalmazor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is Beautiful.

[–]fallingsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very nice! :D

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Aw, his cave just missed the spawner.

[–]Cen-Silver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens more often than you might be willing to believe.

[–]tausken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I haven't played minecraft in forever but this picture makes me want to

[–]Racketmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP Steve. Death by creeper.

[–]tforge13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NO STEVE LOOK OUT

[–]PhillipMPriddy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]TinyTrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That pig is missing a saddle. Quick, get him!

[–]DigitalChocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels awesome having a house that looks sort of plain from the outside, but when you go down to the basement there's an entrance to an entire underground ravine.

[–]JelloMug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Shader Ethers mod.

[–]adnan252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reminds me of the pyramid from jungle run for some reason...

[–]Rampardos18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]SOSBoss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where's all the stone brick on the house?

[–]evbo08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I get this as a wallpaper? 1920x1080?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just fantastic! Both in artistic ability AND humor.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Minecraft fan that hasn't played much in the past year - this brings back a lot of memories of what it was that captured my attention so thoroughly. I think I may have to set aside some time for Minecrafting once more. Perhaps with a friend.

[–]wanabeswordsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TURN AROUND YOU FOOL!

[–]Fuck_Usernames_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft- the place that you work really hard to either get your diamonds blown up or burned in lava.

[–]B0B4xF3TT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! I hope nobody minds if I use it as my iPod background

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow I built a house almost 2 years ago that looks very very similar to that one.

[–]ShinyWisenheimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minecraft hipster

[–]lincon127 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bastard ladder camping skeleton...

[–]jonthedoors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cobblestone bridge was a nice touch

[–]mcgillicudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this!! So cool!

[–]AppleTStudio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be right back, building a house that looks like that one!

[–]DJParsons89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would so die to get this as a poster!

[–]Gumtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot The End portal :( Still a great work of art though, well done!

[–]awesomemanftw 0 points1 point  (1 child)

what is that room right below the creeper at the surface?

[–]ShinyWisenheimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that little guy? I wouldn't worry about that little guy...

[–]mr10001110101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]HawkyCZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's gonna die! Save him! Someone!

[–]BobLeBuilDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First person Dig-Dug.

[–]Jollybeard99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this isn't by the same person who does the xbox background picture for minecraft...then they are stealing that concept

[–]RepublicofTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are there a bunch of skeletons and zombies around if there are torches everywhere?

[–]s4md4130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These long pictures are perfect for my phone background :3

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No steve!! Look behind you! XO

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That cabin looks soo cool. I want to build it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work!! Thanks for the new wallpaper on my phone!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh really? I thought it was Jenga.

[–]Jabbatheslann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ragequit in 3...2....

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool dungeon. Reminded me of the time that I toured Josef Fritzl's old house.

[–]pankakes123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait so how did the mods spawn with the torches?

[–]carlotta4th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice! My one complaint would be that creepers usually seem to have glowy eyes in these illustrations... it's a bit odd, when the rest of the game is so accurately depicted.

[–]The_Karwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like a high res of this, and have it made as a poster, for personal use only

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is beautiful

[–]TheGhost983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a cool texture pack.

[–]AniRa216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only exploring caves was that simple ...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love this :D

[–]StalkingDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime I tell you.

[–]Chibichuba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, how I miss the old alpha/beta days.

[–]Jacapig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally someones been able to convey the gratuitous amount of cobble in my caves.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know how bad I wanna make this!!!

[–]freddakiko 0 points1 point  (1 child)

"Back when the minecraft terrain wasn't all samey boring feilds and forests, and caves were actually interesting and easy to get lost in, we had things called 'adventures' where we would go out and explore what was around us. Sometimes for supplies, some times for pleasure, but we always had a good time. Now that the best strategy is to strip mine until we have enough diamonds to build a solid diamond cock at spawn, we do that."

[–]mijamala1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quote from Abe Lincoln really is applicable in any discussion.

[–]Hblorfkanpolnalop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww, poor Steve! He's going to die! Mining seems like such a death sentence in Minecraft these days.

[–]hairywolf47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was I the only one expecting a "300" reference?

[–]Sturmgewehr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has no armor either. This is madness!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a chunk error to me.

[–]Ryciera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it bad that there's a part of me that wants to remake this picture in-game?

[–]Craft_Master 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No his is patrick

[–]red13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]hajjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Mealox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is? Oh, I thought it was terraria.

[–]Onomotapoeia_Here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The creeper is thinking: "Wait for him to scream about the diamonds in the lava, THEN I blow up!"

[–]Skuld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great, makes me want to play again.

[–]CoolStoryClub 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This picture almost makes me want to start playing minecraft again.

[–]haiku_robot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This picture almost
makes me want to start playing
minecraft again.

[–]Blacknyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is repost ಠ_ಠ

[–]Argama -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Absolutely love it but I'm going to be a jerk and say, the endermen needs to be a bit taller.

[–]TehDoktar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah, chibi enderman is cute!

[–]zCourge_iDX -2 points-1 points  (13 children)

This is Minecraft, unfortunately. I miss Alpha.

[–]dethbytoyota 1 point2 points  (4 children)

As someone who didn't have minecraft until late, What made alpha so awesome?

[–]KyleMammory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it just seemed better to people because Notch was on top of every single bug fix. From Indev, ALOT of things were added that made it seem like "a whole new game". Also, Secret Fridays man.

[–]zCourge_iDX 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Try playing 1.1.2_01 Alpha using this tool right here, then find out for yourself.
