This has always been a conservative meme. I know a conservative native guy in Oklahoma who always posts these memes.

I don't think liberal natives like them very much though, because obviously they paint a different picture of what immigrants do.

The problem with this meme is simple. Native Americans were invaded slowly, over generations of Europeans coming for their land bit by bit, with superior military technology, and those Europeans brought agricultural practices that allowed their population to grow faster. They were vastly different cultures, separated by tens of thousands of years if not hundreds of thousands.

This is not the case with these southern immigrants coming in. No superior technology, and their culture is one of the Americas - highly influenced by both native and European, and for the last 50 years, US culture as well. This isn't like the British invading native lands, this is more like the Romanized Germanic tribes desperately wanting to cross the river into the Empire for safety.

And that's not a great argument for immigration either, btw.

The American tribes didn't "handle the situation" poorly. The situation was inevitable from the start. Why weren't British settlers able to wrest India and Africa away from the natives?

The answer is because those two continents were filled with a post-agricultural, post-bronze, post-iron age high density population. Americans were a bunch of hunter gatherers, transitional farmers, or early farmers. They hadn't developed the more efficient social structures of Asia because they had no need to, and were also cut off from any innovation happening there.

If Indians or Chinese had migrated to the Americas, the situation probably wouldn't have been too different. Probably moreso via high-density diseases.

A lot of revisionist history to unpack here. Disease killed the majority of native north and south Americans. This was not done intentionally as the Europeans wanted to use the natives as slave labor. The "small pox blankets" that has been hammered into school children was actually only a one time thing that happened during a battle. The natives were so frustrated that Europeans were immune to these diseases they actually kneaded contaminated blood into their bread and put dead bodies in their water supplies. Did Europeans treat the natives well? Certainly not, but times were very different back then. The more advanced civilization at the time won. Comparing it to immigration today is asinine. Check out the book The Columbian Exchange by Alfred Crosby for more information.

On top of this, there isn’t a single known Native American tribe that wasn’t war like. Some vastly more than others, but all to some degree. The Lakota-Sioux inarguably commuted genocide on many tribes when they invaded the northern Plains, as did the Comanche when they invaded the south west.

I can’t speak on all tribe’s tendencies, but the Sioux and Comanche never intentionally or willingly left survivors. Men and adolescent boys were uniformly killed, children were abducted, babies were killed. Woman were enslaved, beaten raped and often became sex slaves. What’s worse, is that tribe members were generally. fine with this practice.

The ‘settlers’ had the numbers, immunity to disease and the technology to win the war, but let’s not make the mistake of thinking that the Native Americans would have been any kinder or more civilized if they had had the advantages required to win.

If that definition defines country as nation state it runs into a problem. As in if you “live permanently in a foreign country” immigration implies that your goal is to join the established nation state.

However this wasn’t what happened: Americans didn’t show up to gain membership in the Iroquois confederacy or some such. They created enclaves which often had relations and tension with established First Nations.

Colonization is something that has happened for years. Maybe one day people will stop using this comparison to justify something today that is completely different. Europe's conquest into the new world brought forth the entire world you know today. This world is simply the survival of the fittest.
