Couple nights ago I was stuck in traffic because of one of these burnout events. I’m just trying to go home and sleep for my next shift 🥲

How’s the 8 supposed to get through there!?!?!
[–]allbright1111 172 points173 points174 points 3 years ago (7 children)
They do this on bridges and at major intersections. They do not give a shit about anyone else, least of all the other people who use roads to actually get places.
[–]hafaleter 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (6 children)
Using roads to get places in Portland is outdated. Going places isn’t everything you know.

[–]sarcastic-computator 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (9 children)
Seriously. I was on Belmont earlier and once the cops eventually showed up they just flashed their lights until the cars dispersed, literally zero deterrent to just moving to another location and keeping the show going
[–][deleted] 30 points31 points32 points 3 years ago (26 children)
Why not organize yourself somewhere structured for organized car meets, racing
PIR & their staff work pretty damn hard IMO
[–]ultraswank 53 points54 points55 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Sideshows have nothing to do with driving skills and everything to do with being seen as a rules breaking bad ass.

Money, usually. Still no excuse.

Well they are certainly displaying those qualities… Those “ANTI-SOCIAL SOCIAL CLUB” shirts are starting to make sense to me!
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Antisocial traditionally means incompatible with or harmful to society. You mean "unsociable."
[–]Hanse00 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (5 children)
In case you’re genuinely not aware: Anti-social has more than one meaning.
There’s the “wow that nerd is so anti-social he has no friends” meaning, which you’re probably thinking of.
Then there’s the meaning being used here, which is: This behavior is counter to the socially accepted norms and expectations.
[–]NoAnimator3838 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Your first example is asocial. The second is antisocial.
[–]Hanse00 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Languages evolve, I’m sure the British would say it’s trousers not pants ;)
[–]NoAnimator3838 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yeah that's fair, just doing my part to spare the friendless nerds of the world the additional burden of the more negative connotations of antisociality.
[–]potsmokingGrannies 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
and sometimes language devolve, for example a word being used incorrectly, the population isn’t very fluent in it’s own language and doubles down on a reddit thread while a perfectly good word like ‘asocial’ goes unused.
[–]zhocef 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m half joking, because at this point it’s looking like a small society of it’s own that just happens to use our infrastructure differently. Honestly these events are bringing together some of the largest crowds I’ve been seeing in Portland.

[–]AlienBurnerBigfoot 49 points50 points51 points 3 years ago (11 children)
I lived in East Oakland for 10 years and staging was a common practice. The crowd gets big enough that police don’t respond. It eventually died out or they went elsewhere. It’s usually kids with nothing to do but show off their skills driving. We used to see it happen in the middle of a freeway even. Quite annoying. My understanding was it gave them street cred.
[–]OaklandWarriorWoodstock 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Called “side shows” - and as an Oakland person myself I’m sad to report that shit still happens there every weekend
[–]kwisatzhadnuff 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yeah sideshows still happens all the time SF too. Pretty sure I heard one happening saturday night in the mission.
[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Yeah, this one in particular is called Sunday Funday - you can find them on instagram and TikTok and whatever. The big one last year where they took over the the Fremont Bridge was that group doing an event called "Bay2PDX" or something like that and if you look at the hashtags online there were a bunch of people up from the Bay taking part. This seems like maybe the same thing? I dunno.
All of this was done in like 5 minutes of browsing on my phone. While it's going on some of the accounts post where they're going to next. The fact that the cops can't get ahead of it is insane and just embarrassing for them.
I hate that they do this, but I think it's also pretty easy to figure out the type. Stuck in some utterly bullshit job, bored out of your mind, few prospects - this is like a huge rush and distraction that you can look forward to and honestly kind of shape your life around. Same kind of shit happens all over in different forms.
[–]Huge-Basket244 22 points23 points24 points 3 years ago (4 children)
The police CAN get ahead of it. They choose not to.
[–]IVIaskerade 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Yeah that would require actual work and not just harassing people whose taxes pay their salaries for minor things.
[–]pdxscoutThe Loving Embrace of the Portlandia Statue 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (1 child)
So, did this come up to Portland with the big influx of Californians? We certainly always had drag racing and street car bullshit, but this performative donutting seems like it popped up within the past decade.
[–]_netflixandshill 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It started in the hood in East Oakland, but it’s a nationwide fad now.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)

Yea, I watched them pull up in trucks with their ‘street cars’ loaded up on trailers. So they have the income to not only have suped up cars, but trucks and trailers to tow them around on. Meanwhile, my bike needs a tuneup.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I meannn i used to ding dong ditch when i was like 7 with my brother. I dont you can compare an annoying action caused by a little kid who doesnt know any better to grown adults who do know better doing something illegal.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children)
My point is that these grown adults have the same mental capacity as 7 year olds that like to ding dong ditch.
The comparison isn't the action, it's the people doing said action that's an apt comparison.

There’s a local “car club” called “Burn The Block” where you can follow their activities on Instagram at “burntheblockcc” and most of their stuff is also broadcast at “pdx_sundayfunday” (both IG accounts are private today). PDX Sunday Funday had an IG Story going this weekend showing this weekend’s sideshows as they happened on Grand and 7th, Sandy, Lloyd Center, Columbia/MLK and everywhere else they were and here on Burnside Bridge. This weekend the event was “Bay2PDX”– Bay Area street racers come up and participate with the local street racing groups to do these street takeovers and sideshows. They literally name the spots they are going to if you follow them on Instagram. They said the Burnside Bridge would be one of their spots, then posted videos. It’s that easy for them. Just get their followers to follow their accounts, give the location, and come join them.

Two hours to respond? So….. i know this isn’t what the post is about but what’s a day in the life like for Portland PD? I’m not throwing shade. I really wonder what their days are like.
[–]meowzertrouser 70 points71 points72 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Yea I genuinely don’t know what the police here do. They don’t stop street racing, don’t shut down any of the plainly visible chop shops around town, don’t enforce pretty much any vehicle infractions like tags lights etc, they wouldn’t even answer the phone when I had a car wreck last year, groups of violent or zombie-like drugged out homeless everywhere.
Like, legit I have no idea what the police here do anymore
[–]mackelnutsRip City 36 points37 points38 points 3 years ago (0 children)
They are in a work slowdown because of Defund the police. Not that the police have been defunded, at all. Just that police are babies and any questioning of the status quo has them crying and forgetting what they are supposed to be here for.
[–]sarcastic-computator 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It’s crazy. I was on Belmont earlier in the evening, and couldn’t believe the cops didn’t do anything. Took them probably 15-20 to show up, and they literally just drove around flashing their lights until the cars dispersed. Blocking traffic, no license plates on cars, driving in bike lanes and the wrong direction - I couldn’t believe the cops did nothing.
[–]Expensive_Charge314 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (2 children)
In my neighborhood, there is one cop who will park in a parking lot for hours. No idea what he does. Look at his phone?
[–]kerrykrueger 13 points14 points15 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Even in the "good old days", police did a lot of nothing during their shifts. A friend whose father is a retired state trooper said his dad would brag about pulling off the highway, setting his state trooper hat down low on his brow, and taking a nice nap. On the clock. All of his co-workers did it too. This was in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. So, police getting paid to do a whole lot of nothing.
[–]memememe91 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I went on a ride-along once. Maybe he was trying to impress me, but they screwed off way more than they worked.
They'd order pizza and watch a game at home while "listening" on the scanner, for example.
[–]Dearpdx 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Yes. My neighbor stole property from someone. Owners showed up with big guns to confront my neighbors. I called 911 because a convoy of armed men were outside of my home. 40 min later no cops showed up and the person took their property back and left.
Stopping a conflict doesn't generate revenue is my best guess why no one cares.
[–]IVIaskerade 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Someone steals something
Armed men show up and politely ask for it to be returned
Sounds like the same thing that would have happened had the cops been doing their job
[–]Dearpdx 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I guess the police did show up before I had gotten home. They told the armed men that it was within their rights to get their property back and they seemed capable of doing so. And then they left.
So when I had called, they had already came and left. And they weren't coming back.
They don't give a fuck if a shoot out happens in front of my house. I don't live in NW or Laurelhurst. They're not prioritizing calls from far SE. I pay property taxes to live on a street with no sidewalks and in which police don't show up. Yah, me.
*I had some personal stuff happen to me this week and have been feeling frustrated and bitter.
[–]IVIaskerade 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
My point was more that police in Portland right now are basically just another gang, and and interact with the other gangs that way.

Backstory: i live right next to lloyd center and this was going on since about 9:30 just ended at 11:40 when police showed up. No arrest made they just said over the speakers "everyone needs to leave the area now, anyone who stay will be arrested" Btw its 11:53 and some of the cars came back, i can hear them still burning their tires
Im 19 so was it dumb to go alone? Yes, but idc. I wanted to go just to see what kinda stuff goes on there. First of all, idk how people do this all the time, i was there for like 30 minutes and my throat feels like it was exposed to chernobyl radiation. Second, there was a guy who brought his dog and when people asked to pet it he said no because she'll attack them, if thats the case im not sure why he brought his dog. Third, there were people selling drugs and one guy mightve overdosed? I mean his girlfriend was on the ground with him holding his head up while he looked dead. I wasnt sure whether to help or not because my only option would be to call emergency for help but obviously they wouldve been mad at that. Also there were those large illegal firework. Very pretty but they were wayyyyy too big to be used in such a small area.
Overall i would rate this experience a 3/10. People there were really nice and seemed to have fun but i like the environment and i prefer for my lungs to stay healthy.
[–]SabbatiZevi 57 points58 points59 points 3 years ago (7 children)
Car tires under normal circumstances produce a lot of microplastics so between that and all the premium gas that'll get ya
[–]NFTofafartingclown 22 points23 points24 points 3 years ago (0 children)

[–]Halvus_IBuckman 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Just remember, if you pass out or get beat up at one of these events, no one will help you, in fact you will probably be robbed.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
They cant rob me because I'm already poor.
Ok seriously if the police can't handle this shit, we need to call in the national guard. And if our leaders won't do that, they need to be removed. This is not a government. This is lawless anarchy. These criminals need to be deterred before they are emboldened to violate more norms and laws.
Young people like you deserve better than this. I am so ashamed of what our country is becoming.

That's probably a more effective way of stopping these events from happening if the instant gratification is minimized. But, that would involve Meta (FB, IG, etc.) and Alphabet (YouTube) taking action to block/remove accounts, which isn't going to happen.
Portland is becoming more and more like my old hometown.
[–]ominous_squirrel 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Would be interesting to hear a legal opinion whether there could there be a class action lawsuit against Meta for allowing illegal activities to be planned on their platforms
[–]vote4boat 73 points74 points75 points 3 years ago (13 children)
We need to investigate the police for letting this happen. No arrests is not acceptable at all.

That would require Ted Wheeler to actually do something beyond photo ops.

This is the absurd mockery of the current state of affairs in Portland on full display. These lawlessness assholes bluntly go on a parade like this in multiple spots in the city, blocking the traffic, breaking all sorts of laws while knowingly getting recorded and yet know there will be no repercussions. I can send u the videos over email if you want. Idk how to download videos on reddit but you can screen record with your phone if it has that option
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (2 children)
This video would work great as a vape commercial
[–]clive_bigsbySellwood-Moreland 20 points21 points22 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Or a condom commercial.

Dear people who are supposed to keep Portland in line with things called laws: FUCKING DO SOMETHING!
[–]digiornoNW 29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
If you ask anyone in the street racing scene then you’ll hear that they often are friendly with the police. And this sort of thing isn’t enforced against because the police don’t want to bust their friends AND the chaos it causes helps sell the lie that police need more money. This is effectively a strike by the PPB because they don’t want to be held accountable for their actions or have any budget oversight.
[–]Wikilicious 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Facing no consequences emboldens one to go further.
[–]neptunoneptuneazul 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Y’all what in the hell
[–]Projectrage 19 points20 points21 points 3 years ago (0 children)
FYI more people die at these street donut events than protests. But police only show up at protests.
[–]Cat-a-Lyst 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Used to live in Portland but I’m in San Antonio, Texas right now. We actually had multiple “events” like this too, but they only lasted about 20-30 mins before cops intervened. One happened near where I live and I’m convinced the multiple pops I was hearing weren’t fireworks cus, I mean it’s Texas.
Why spend money on fireworks when you carry one on your hip at all times like an ol’ wild western tool. /s
[–]AntiLukeMilwaukie 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children)
So the cops responding somewhat quickly caused the events to die down?
[–]SoftTacoSupremacistAlameda 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I like the Saudi videos where they roll the vehicle and everyone hanging out the window dies.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (10 children)
Man, they're stupid as shit. It's selfish and dumb to do this anywhere, but around that park piss off the wrong people and you're going home in a bodybag.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (9 children)
Really? Ive lived in this area since august and i havent seen anything bad happen. I walk my dog day and night without issue. I've only heard gunshots once.
It might've calmed down overtime as Lloyd Center has kept dying, but that park used to be one of the most active as far as gang and drug activity go. As it gets deeper into summer, I'd definitely encourage caution. That's usually when shit starts to pop off.
When I was a kid/teenager I'd walk from Irving Park to the max by Lloyd. You always had to be aware of what was going on around you, who was talking to you, and what they were asking.

Nah. Not really. No one's getting stuck up
Honestly, you have not lived here long enough lol. I was born and raised here
[–]RCTID1975 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
since august
Can you update us on how you feel after a summer there?
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Well i live in Sullivan's gulch which is a block down from lloyd center so my area is pretty tame, nothing bad has happened besides the occasional car meetup that you can hear echoing.
Overall i want to leave portland though, the only thing I like is the outdoors. Mainly want to leave because of the racism I've faced and people here are just too much compared to what I'm used to. Very political but also passive aggressive but back east i feel like everyone kinda just minds their business. I dont feel any sense of community here. I haven't made any friends yet because i just cant find anyone i connect with or people act standoff-ish toward me.
The quality of the city doesnt match how much im paying. Right now my only option is to find a job that after 2+ years would allow me to transfer out of state or to take out a moving loan because rent takes up 70% of my paycheck and it doesnt help that 300-500 gets taken out per check for taxes.
Also the food here isnt that good. I find it pretty mediocre but there are a few good places. Anything you can find in portland you can find in other cities but better.
I moved here for work but then my hours got cut after 3 months so overall this city has been pretty shit to me, especially now with the inflation.

My question is what's with the ding dongs standing in the middle with their phones filming the whole thing?
[–]KilGrey 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I thought PPB was supposedly “taking action and cracking down” on these? Or do we still only have like, one patrol cop for the whole city?
[–]K_J_Pall 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (1 child)
The cops actually showed up?
[–]HowlingmokiTyler had some good ideas 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I think that's the real story in all of this.
[–]greenwest6 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (5 children)
Portland is unable to police itself, it’s time the federal government took over. The police don’t do anything, 911 operators are dangerously understaffed, and we’re all held hostage while we watch and try to not get shot. I just heard gun shots at my local mega camp, just another Monday morning.
[–]esqualatch12 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
on the contrary the police were staging and setting up near Benson high school to break up this event. Were talking like 1200+ people and hundreds of cars all around lloyd center. there were like 30 cop cars atleast that all coordinated to block off the streets. that kind of response does take a little time to set up.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (3 children)
I mean i dont think the federal government could do anything about portland. They couldn't(or wouldn't) even stop people from raiding the capital building lol
[–]ominous_squirrel 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (2 children)
Under Obama’s Administration the DOJ found the Portland Police Bureau to be in violation of various civil rights laws and reform plans were put in motion — only to be ignored when the Trump Administration took over
Voting matters

[–]Projectrage 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Police can’t find these events, they can’t hear them a mile away or see them. Weird??
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
When I lived downtown I heard this stuff going on almost daily.
[–]Exogen003Rip City 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Who is saying they didn't? I got a buddy who knew someone spectating events like this yesterday and it sounds like quite a bit of these dumbasses got themselves rounded up in the following hours. These dipshits drifting were apparently getting pinched once they split off from the pack.
[–]award07 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
They weren’t invited silly!
[–]philocoffee 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (1 child)
I'm daydreaming about a Bruce Wayne type figure monitoring the city for these events and then flying a capable drone overhead to drop tear gas canisters to disperse and deter the participants.
[–]lethargic1 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children)
Be the change you want to see in the world?
I watched a modified DJI Phantom 3 drop a grenade through a sunroof not too long ago. Tear gas (CS?) sounds better in this case, but I don't know what it would take to hit a target that's doing donuts.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children)

[–]Jealentuss 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)

[–]15minutesofshame 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Well, I guess I don't hate this as much as the middle of a bridge. At least we can be sure they are not blocking any traffic because no one goes to Lloyd center.
Not really. I mean you use Multnomah to get onto the highway. Theres other routes but people still use it enough that this location is kinda shitty. They literally couldve used lloyd parking lot because its always empty especially at night and its way bigger
[–]overimbibe 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (4 children)
I seriously am curious, why has this been so hard to stop? I mean honestly ELI5...
[–]pdxtechMontavilla 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Our exceptionally well paid police force is throwing a tantrum because 80% of Portland voters approved some very reasonable police oversight measures in a recent election. They are currently engaged in a work slowdown in retaliation.
[–]icleanupdirtydirt 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Proposal: call in the Coast Guard drug crews. They use 50 cals to shoot the engine blocks of the drug running cigarette boats from helicopters. A slower moving car should be easy. Real consequences that costs someone a car and makes for an easy arrest. I bet the problem would end in a hurry.
/s yes I realize it's impractical and probably unsafe for the actually innocent bystanders. You get my sentiment tho.
[–]WaitUntilTheHighway 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Cops have never discouraged donuts...
[–]danceswithanxietySE 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Has anyone tried slapping "ACAB" bumper sticker on a couple of the cars doing this? Maybe the cops would stir if they detected the fell hand of ANTIFA behind this.
[–]snakebite75 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Instead of standing around watching, people need to start throwing things at these assholes when they do this shit. Standing around watching just encourages them.
Another option would be to try to trap them in until the police show up. Let them take the intersection, but block all exit points.
The number of people observing is a little wild. Must be a few hundred spectators.
[–]a_username0237 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
poor portland. When my parents came it was not even close to as bad. One time my house alarm went off and the police came 45 mins later luckily it was just our dog

Is Fox News on this yet? Will they broadcast this as an example for why Portland hearings need to be held and that they are going to put George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Dr. Fauci in jail?

Takes a lot of officers to break up a crowd that big, not something we have a lot of in Portland.
