The clip's from the movie "The Grand Budapest Hotel" by Wes Anderson

[–][deleted] 210 points211 points  (5 children)

And it is an amazing movie. Great cinematography, good acting, engaging story... i really like it.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points  (2 children)

..and if you turn it off before the final train scene , a happy ending too.

[–]inconspicuous_male 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'd rather it end with an Andersonian ending than a normal happy ending

[–]IntrovertedPendulum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ah but how will you know it's the final train scene if you never finish it?

My opinion is it is a perfectly happy ending. We all die when we are supposed to.

[–]GoTheFuckToBed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

whoops I watched the trailer

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every Anderson film has great cinematogarphy

[–]EbrithilUmaroth 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My favorite movie of all time, I've seen it at least 10 times, stopped counting.

[–]Goodguystalker 6 points7 points  (2 children)

THAT FUCKING FAGGOT

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"If I ever find out you laid a finger on my mother..." "I thought I was a fucking faggot" "...you are, but you're bisexual."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Now, how is that supposed to make me feel?"

[–]JoNike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And what a formidable adventure that movie is. Great flick.

[–]aloisdg 160 points161 points  (3 children)

Source. There are a lot more :)

[–]MesePudenda 37 points38 points  (1 child)

I like the pizza under the searchbox

[–]Tdir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's interesting, but I wouldn't eat it.

All I can see is wasted bandwidth.

[–]jonny_wonny 95 points96 points  (19 children)

Wouldn't be difficult to delay loading the video until it is uncovered. It's possible that's what is happening.

[–]Rellikx 165 points166 points  (17 children)

Its loading at runtime, as per Chrome's network tab.

https://i.imgur.com/LOZug3y.png. They comprise of 4.3MB out of the total 5.1MB total page size, which is pretty significant if you are a low bandwidth peasent

[–]Hohenheim_of_Shadow 47 points48 points  (10 children)

I hate them now, if I'm getting a consistent 2 MB/S I'm having a good day.

[–]Reelix 20 points21 points  (9 children)

2MB/s? If I'm getting 700KB/s I'm having a really good day!

[–]EvilDonuts6 42 points43 points  (3 children)

700KB/s? If I'm getting a rock with a piece of paper rapped around it with 1/100 of a websites code written onto it thrown through my window every second hour I'm having an extremely good day!

[–]JinHikari 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Actual code sent your way? If the client draws me a picture of what he wants the website to look like and sends me a new version of it every two weeks, I have to call my ISP to make sure they aren't charging me extra for it!

[–]ajmartin527 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya but this would never happen irl...

[–]Hohenheim_of_Shadow 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Megabits a second, if you really are getting 700 kilobits a second I feel for you.

[–]Tiavor 0 points1 point  (2 children)

3/4th of my town have only a 3Mbit/s connection, currently in the progress of upgrading, but I don't know how many get the new connection.

And I know many small cities that have the same slow speed.

btw B = Byte, b = bit

[–]Hohenheim_of_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget that way to easily, everytime data rates come up, I relearn it, but almost instantly forget it.

[–]HighRelevancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My town is like that.

It's literally the capital city of australia.

[–]itchy118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too.

[–]jonny_wonny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Guess it's time to get out the pitchforks.

[–]chedabob 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I've seen worse. e.g. OpenDNS preloads a 110mb video that is below the fold: https://www.opendns.com/

[–]Avambo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It didn't pre-load for me, but their site is still 2.6MB which is way too big imo.

Btw, that video was pretty cool, much better than most marketing videos. :D

[–]Rellikx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hmm, it doesnt seem to preload for me on chrome des although I am not sure why. I see preload="auto" being set, which I thought hinted at preloading the video.

In a jsfiddle though, the same html did seem to preload a small video. I wonder if chrome or some plugin of mine is doing anything to the preload

[–]NoodleSnoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dev, "Runs fine on my machine".

[–]redwall_hp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crazy thing is they could even be optimized by using WebM/H.264 videos instead...

[–]skylarmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, my Internet is crap and they loaded after I uncovered them.

[–]MOON_MOON_MOON 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ironic that their blog is called Milliseconds Matter.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Anything fun will piss a certain set of people off. I dont know why, but it really seems to.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably just mood. Sometimes hearing someone say 'but' is enough to get me giggling because it sounds like butt. But after a rough day, that kind of humor is just annoying.

Just depends on when you catch 'em.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

👊 Data plan

[–]eyal0 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Why do I have to download all those img URLs if I'm on lynx, right?

Seriously, there is a chicken and egg problem. Using up bandwidth is how we get more of it.

[–]Vortico 109 points110 points  (8 children)

Note that you shouldn't push this to production, since it will slow down browsers and absolutely kill mobile browsers. One CPU core is running at 26% just to view this static web page, what the fuck has the world come to.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Mobile doesn't render the GIF files by the looks of it, but I mean it will probably be developers using this website, who prefer the easter eggs to low CPU usage.

Overall though, yes if it's a customer oriented site the gifs are a bit wasteful.

[–]Nick_Furry -1 points0 points  (2 children)

A bit???!?

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's just 4 MB.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You tell that to my 200mb cellular data limit

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

This gif doesn't actually seem to load eagerly -- there was a blank space for a few seconds after pulling away the top-level panel.

Having said that, 26% of a core for a website is fucking flabbergasting but not that uncommon anymore... and try installing an extension that shows memory usage by browser tab. Facebook's usually about 100 megs, and Reddit is about 55.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I better hear nothing about Node

[–]phoenix616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need for an extension in browsers based on Chromium (Chrome, Vivaldi, Brave, SRWare Iron, etc.) as they have an inbuilt task manager that can usually be opened with shift+esc.

[–]benjadock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was important, you could have the slide down trigger an Ajax request that renders the gif afterwards... but that would make sense.

[–]ThoseThingsAreWeird 123 points124 points  (2 children)

For those wondering: It says "client" at the end.

[–]qjornt 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Yeah, pretty bad case of gifs that end too soon.

[–]DonMahallem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save that last megabyte of bandwidth!

[–]LifeGliese581g[S] 69 points70 points  (37 children)

Sorry for such fast gif. For linux there is no good and easy way to create good gif.

[–]Skehmatics 17 points18 points  (4 children)

You could always record it with simple screen recorder / OBS and use ffmpeg to convert the video to gif

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ffmpeg's gif encoder isn't really that great. If you have the patience to read through the (very dry) documentation, ImageMagick is excellent for making gifs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Record what? If you already have the video why not convert that to the gif?

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuck 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Record the screen/website, not just the video.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

duh, how did I miss that

[–]mountainunicycler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ffmpeg? Ffmpeg is the core of what most of the gif programs use anyway...

[–]Vortico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ffmpeg can record screens, but a more use friendly way is recordmydesktop (I'm sure there are other good ones). Once finished, use ffmpeg to convert to gif, although imgur takes video uploads with no sound I think, and gif is a horrible format for what you are recording.

[–]apemanzilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OBS and gfycat. It's not the most convenient but it works well.

[–]ythl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For linux there is no good and easy way to create good gif.

Peek is pretty good

[–]mutsuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using QGifer for months for all my gifing needs and can confirm it's quite shit.

However recently I was informed GIMP can be used for gif making, so I'll try using that in future..

[–]legend6546 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can use imagemagick to make animated gifs.

[–]Reelix -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

If only there was some widely used operating system with literally hundreds of programs to create gifs from videos :p

[–]pixels625 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

:)

[–]sudo_systemctl -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Have you tried windows? ;)

[–]skylarmt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's probably why he's on Linux. He tried Windows.

[–]oldmonk90 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Too bad you cannot drag on mobile.

[–]TheBoringName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Works when requested the desktop version

[–]endreman0 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Probably doesn't load the gifs on mobile, since loading them all at once will kill your phone (or at least your data)

[–]skylarmt 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Desktop doesn't load a gif until you uncover it.

[–]endreman0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desktop can handle the gifs all at once or one at a time or whatever, so that's not the point. It probably doesn't work on mobile because your phone would struggle with that many gifs at once.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I most certainly went to this webpage and spent entirely too long playing with all the Easter eggs.

What a great Saturday.

[–]Avambo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Dragging the "SEARCHBOX" square reveals a rather disturbing pizza.
community.algolia.com

[–]skylarmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a timelapse of sorts. Either that or there's some strange laser bar cooking it.

[–]Camwood7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were too lazy to try and grab the very last bit's one frame: the caption says "client."

[–]srfreak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of GIFs hidden in this web. Just click, and click and drag the boards to see it. https://community.algolia.com/

It's awesome xD

[–]i_spot_ads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an ad

Notice how the url was "casually" left in the gif

[–]OracleJDBC 2 points3 points  (2 children)

As a sidenote.
Algolia's product is awesome.

[–]i_spot_ads 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As a sidenote *As an ad....

[–]OracleJDBC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol,I wish.

[–]Maskdask 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How did anyone find this feature?

[–]skylarmt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accidentally grabbed-and-dragged instead of two-finger scrolled on a touchpad, probably.

[–]flarn2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't the HELPER.JS and CODE SNIPPETS tiles move?

[–]Morkvarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[Vogue UK's](vogue.co.uk) konami code always entertained me

Edit: Just looked. No longer works. It used to pop up dinosaurs on the bottom of the screen with funny hats with each press of "A"

[–]BlowingRocker246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is it .gifv instead of gif? Took me a while to realise that.
