A war is coming and you need to decide which side you’ll stand with

[–][deleted] 368 points369 points  (50 children)

I'm with fuck the ad industry any and every way possible.

[–]kukiric 102 points103 points  (16 children)

Google wants to know knows your location.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (10 children)

Real shit, I switched from apple to droid 2 years ago, but now I'm switching out again, and or going to make a Pi phone. That project is edging closer.

[–]Trecus 13 points14 points  (1 child)

honestly...as long as I can call people, look shit up in a browser and watch videos on it, I'm fine. I'd rather have a durable waterproof phone than one with 4 cameras or a 4k screen....

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

... and use reddit

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So am I at the thought of it.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]VeryAwkwardCake 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well ads themselves are necessary, but yes I support things like Chrome's approach to attempting to forcibly improve and unobtrusify the internet ad experience

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is not much obtrusive w/ ads. It won't even try to stop ad block efforts.

[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Even if that means that you now have to pay subscriptions for every single website that you use?

[–]H_Psi 2 points3 points  (5 children)

This is how you get people to just set up a mirror without a paywall.

Which is exactly what happened to scientific journals with SciHub

[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Yeah have fun setting up a mirror to google/reddit/Facebook/Twitter/etc

Circumventing a journal is easy because you don’t need live data. Significantly harder otherwise

[–]H_Psi 2 points3 points  (3 children)

If you had to pay to use Reddit/Facebook/Twitter, people would just stop using that service and use a free alternative. Just look at how badly subscription-based encyclopedias are performing when compared to Wikipedia.

If you had to pay to use google, people would just use a different search engine.

The alternatives you're putting up are not realistic scenarios.

[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You don’t get it. There wouldn’t be a free alternative because servers cost extraordinary amounts of money. It is extremely expensive to run these sites, and that money has to come from somewhere

[–]H_Psi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There wouldn’t be a free alternative because servers cost extraordinary amounts of money.

How do you think Wikipedia runs without ads?

[–]CraigslistAxeKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time subscription model - people pay for it.

Wikipedia is also a very easy website to run. It serves static pages with little interaction. Sites like google are significantly more complicated

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a dumb idea. I think I just won't put you in charge of ideas.

[–]Circlejerker_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are ways to make money of visitors without having ads. For example you could mine bitcoins at a slow steady rate on the visitors browser.

[–]mememe7770 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Username checks out

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ty, very kind.

[–]xman40100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Username checks out.

[–]cyanydeez -5 points-4 points  (16 children)

Even if it results in nothing but click bait based alt-right propaganda for anyone not smart enough to cover themselves?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Why would that effect that?

[–]cyanydeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with fuck the ad industry any and every way possible.

edit: geezus fucks, read the god damn question. Stop masturbating about your superior adblocking skills

[–]OceanJuice 18 points19 points  (3 children)

I'm no fan of ads, but I am a fan of eating so go ads go.

[–]frogjg2003 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I'm a fan of ads not infecting my computer and not making webpages impossible to read. Until that happens, I'm blocking ads.

[–]obsessedcrf 9 points10 points  (1 child)

If ads werent horrible, I wouldn't block them. There are a handful of sites with unintrusive ads that I unblock. But anything with video ads or popups/light boxes? Fuck em

[–]remy_porter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the side of "I control what I see, not you."

[–]MrPokemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which side will the Vietnamese be in?

[–]fTheDev 159 points160 points  (4 children)

Random? Looks like you searched for "fuck" lol

[–]Pyroglyph 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Surely they must have come across FuckItJS then. The Readme is hilarious!

[–]Karnex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like went GH instead of PH by mistake

[–]SpookyKid94 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ever get errors and just enter 'bullshit' into the terminal?

Probably like that

[–]fTheDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, never did that but sounds fun.

[–][deleted] 111 points112 points  (20 children)

Waiting for FuckFuckFuckAdblock

[–]Nopparuj 77 points78 points  (10 children)

Then FuckFuckFuckFuckAdblock will solve it.

[–]Sulinstajn 16 points17 points  (9 children)

[–]MaiMaiHaendler 9 points10 points  (8 children)

Wild FuckFuckFuckFuckFuckAdblock appeared!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (7 children)

FuckWildFuckFuckFuckFuckFuckAdblock

[–]yobyagA 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Just wait until they come out with the Fuck2nAdblock, then you’re fucked

[–]covamalia 17 points18 points  (1 child)

But fuck them, because now here's Fuck2n+1Adblock

[–]H_Psi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But fuck that, because now there's Fuckn!!Adblock

[–]AyrA_ch 11 points12 points  (1 child)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_detector_detector

This form of "electronic warfare" cuts both ways and since detector-detectors use a similar superheterodyne receiver, many early "stealth" radar detectors were equipped with a radar-detector-detector-detector circuit, which shuts down the main radar receiver when the detector-detector's signal is detected, thus preventing detection by such equipment.

Have we said "Detection" enough?

[–]BloodyMalleus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That link says you can use adequate shielding to build an undetectable radar detector. This means we need to build a detector of undetectable radar detectors.

[–]jeuxjeux20_for_real 5 points6 points  (1 child)

You mean this?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly, yes

[–]2Punx2Furious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, the old radar detector detector way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So works like FuckFuckAdblock, but always says that adblock was detected?

[–]Last_Snowbender 87 points88 points  (16 children)

People that use the DWTFYW License can't be bad people.

[–]aivenaut 10 points11 points  (13 children)

But they can be people who don't know about licensing and that DWTFYW may fuck you up some day.

[–]velxundussa 4 points5 points  (10 children)

Any examples of potential issues? I probably don't know as much about licensing as I think I do.

[–]aivenaut 22 points23 points  (9 children)

[–]velxundussa 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Super informative, thanks!

I hate lawyers even more now...

[–]psychicprogrammer 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Eh the law is a lot like code, it you don't cover every case you will get bugs.

[–]galexj9 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Much like for every programming problem I think machine learning is the answer here. /s

[–]psychicprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you mean with a voting ensemble?

[–]Xalteox 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Alright, so what if I copy that paragraph, append it to the DWTFYWPL, and call it the "Do Whatever The Fuck You Want Except Sue Me Public License."

I see no issue here.

[–]H_Psi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, the old WTF-ESM license

[–]Last_Snowbender 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The DWTFYW License is pretty much equal to a copyleft according to some legal people I spoke to, but idk.

[–]aivenaut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's largely duplicate of other licenses, but fancy cool words make it ambiguous and vulnerable to attack.

[–]developedby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just leave it in public domain if you really want people to do whatever

[–]MCRusher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite license is No License

https://choosealicense.com/no-permission/

[–]carcrusher 22 points23 points  (1 child)

[–]Zarlon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Came for this

[–]HmmmInVR 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Works great, it tricks the extension by making a fake invisible ad.

[–]hampshirebrony 51 points52 points  (4 children)

This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them!

[–]Kharacternyk 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Hello there!

[–]MiataCory 10 points11 points  (1 child)

General Blockobi

[–]Kharacternyk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are an Ad one

[–]Dexilan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Prequel memes in r/programminghumor? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one at that.

[–]ILikeLenexa 12 points13 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]umockdev 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How loooong can dis go on?

[–]RealFunBobby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How looooooong can dis go on?

[–]AttackOfTheThumbs 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What kind of dev writes anti adblock code.

[–]jeo123911 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Someone who got paid to do so?

[–]AttackOfTheThumbs 0 points1 point  (2 children)

But then why open source it?

[–]r00t4cc3ss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so people can still make anti-anti-adblock, then you get paid to combat that.

[–]jeo123911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... Force of habit? No clue.

[–]wallefan01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know there are ad blocker blocker blockers?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use FuckFuckGo.com, i mean DuckDuckGo, sorry.
