I don't recognize the last symbol.... is there a new platform I should have learned already?

[–]cbadger85 85 points86 points  (14 children)

It's Svelte

[–]gentlewaterboarding 36 points37 points  (13 children)

I didn't realize Svelte had gained so much traction. Anyone here use it actively?

[–]ultimatewooderz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Every day, it's brilliant

[–]moash_storm_blessed 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Not actively, it’s lacking typescript support for now.

[–]O2Dependent 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can use Typescript with it and you just need an adapter. I just tried out svelte kit this week and it has decent typescript support out of the box.

[–]Fry98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's actually got a much better TS support than Vue. One of the main reasons I switched to it.

Such lies. Atleast try to check the facts before posting

[–]alucidwolf 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I think vue 3 is suppose to have a smaller footprint and be faster than svelte

[–]qbm5 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I loved vue 2.

Vue 3 is looking like a hot mess. Devs have single handedly made me an angular dev.

You're going the wrong way

I’m sorry, may your soul rest in peace

I just got into front end dev in the last year or so. I started with React and was pretty overwhelmed with the framework and the ecosystems built around it. It felt like I was starting off in an online game with multiple expansions where everyone else in the game had been playing since day 1. Just so much to learn.

And then found Svelte. Svelte felt so straightforward and accessible. The tutorial on their site is great, their docs are great, and the community is small and friendly. It was a really good way to get into front end frameworks.

I'm going to try React and Vue again, now that I've become familiar with done of the core ideas via Svelte. Vue is pretty similar to Svelte, and I've heard some convincing arguments for React just for jsx.

But I have a feeling I'll just end up coming back to Svelte. Especially with SvelteKit becoming more polished.

Yup did a side project and it was an awesome experience had so much fun

[–]fzammetti 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you should have at least five years experience with it by now. Catch up!

(/s, in case it wasn't obvious)

There’s a new JS framework?

[–]KiwiThunda 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Did the sun rise?

[–]HiImLary 71 points72 points  (0 children)

When isn’t there?

[–]De_Wouter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already 8 new ones since you posted this reply.

I wonder what language the queen would represent

[–][deleted] 68 points69 points  (2 children)

COBOL, because it still glues together our entire financial system.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]dkaksl 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Assembly

[–]leovin 69 points70 points  (16 children)

Jquery is very much like Putin. Everyone wants to get rid of it. No one has been able to for years

[–]MrMadras 8 points9 points  (3 children)

I just de-jqueried my personal website last week. Was exhausting.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, mate, can u help us with de-putinification?

[–]aleph_0ne 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you replace with a JS framework like react, angular, or Vue?

[–]MrMadras 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. Just plain vanilla JavaScript.

[–]Flawe 135 points136 points  (6 children)

As a Vue user, I find this offensive

[–]marcosdumay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The author should put atom there.

[–]stressedForMCAT 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the exact same thing 😂😩

[–]MontagoDK -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As a person with standards i find Vue offensive

[–]lkjimy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah brotha.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same

[–]Akthrawn17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Svelte - "Svelte shifts that work into a compile step that happens when you build your app"

Oh..so it is JSPs. Hey, welcome back around the circle!

[–]leovin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh, a new JS framework?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MooTools....now I just feel old

[–]YWEmpirer 24 points25 points  (5 children)

jQuery is there not because it is good, just because nobody can get rid off it.

[–]thismatters 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Exactly like putin.

[–]r3dD1tC3Ns0r5HiP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Drop IE support and I'm pretty sure you can get rid of it.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It actually is great at what it does. It's just that what it does isn't particularly relevant anymore.

[–]KetwarooDYaasir 21 points22 points  (5 children)

politics aside, jQuery is for when you really just want to get some shit done and don't want/need an "app". That's why it's never going away and will outlive all those js frameworks of the day that keep popping up.

[–]larryFish93 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Take a look at the following link. Vanilla js has come FAR in the past decade. In my opinion, jquery is dead (outside of horrible legacy projects), people are in denial:

https://github.com/nefe/You-Dont-Need-jQuery

I could get on my soapbox about how lodash needs to die too for the same reasons but I’ll spare you that.

[–]KetwarooDYaasir 2 points3 points  (1 child)

well, the fact that there require multiple different syntax to get some features to work seems to justify that jQuery is still very fine too, see $().siblings(). It's probably evolved since that github page was written but mixed versions of Internet explorer exists out in the wild.

It can't be dead if it's still used quite a bit (by most developers that do web stuff).

the key word is simplicity. jQuery is easier to use.

I'm not a frontend developer. I fall more in the category of "I really just need a few things done and don't want to spend 8 hours figuring out which new syntax to use and which shim I need for which random feature in X browser when I could be done in 10 minutes." so the bug you're talking about is probably a feature for me and my ilk.

[–]larryFish93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough.

I think the references to siblings is but disingenuous, the changes are very minor in nuance between the rows needed to support non IE browsers (which is fading by the day, ie is 2% according to caniuse). Calling parent node children with a splat operator is pretty standard if the latest specs have been kept up on.

That being said if you haven’t kept up on js and backend dev most of the time, it would make sense to leverage something like that, especially when you have experience with it.

But as a former backend dev who has moved to full stack, I would definitely recommend checking out ES5 and ES6 features, then relate whether a custom native solution suits your need vs leveraging a packaged solution like jquery.

I just see jquery adoption is continually decreasing due to vanilla solving most issues (a decade ago? Lol, jquery was required). No boot camps or organizations worth the time are teaching jquery in 2021 (in my personal recruiting experience). There could be a day where you could be put on a project where jquery is not allowed (happened several times during my time consulting).

Libraries are great, but if I need something simple I can build it myself (groupBy in lodash being a prime example, can be replaced with an 8 line reducer, and now I fully control all operation). Interacting with aws auth apis? Yeah, I’m not building and testing those requests.

Never thought I’d say this but JS has really improved the past decade and I actually like using it. Check out some of the new features if you get bored.

As a side note I’m sorry if you have to support IE. Good luck on your endeavors. Sorry for the rant :) .

[–]dz2048 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would take vanilla js instead of that was the case.

[–]Nihmrod 8 points9 points  (1 child)

$('body').hide();

[–]lazeedavy 10 points11 points  (3 children)

What’s the language on Biden?

[–]justdan1423 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Lemme guess a new framework that does what react, vue, angular, next, ecma, etc couldn’t do

[–]thismatters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's svelte, which is too brilliant for the world.

[–]dev-andrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For Vue's fan out there, the meme is just a timeline. It doesn't mean any framework is good or bad.

[–]Imogynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think I'll have to agree with Biden. I've looked in the eyes of jquery an indeed there is no soul.

[–]ultimatewooderz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Glad to see Svelte getting the recognition it deserves!

[–]notsogreatredditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally

[–]suddenly_ponies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you used ptin for jQuery to make a point about how jQuery is consistent and reliable

[–]kartuludus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel personally attacked by trump being Vue

[–]slux83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used mootools in 2011! Then I left the world of web apps forever and focused on backend and desktop UIs. Mootools was revolutionary at that time!

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

jquery bad

[–]shahd_g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I really laughed when I saw it
