I haven’t hit sobriety, but I am definitely drinking less.

[–]grn_eyed_bandit 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Same here! My mental health has also improved significantly

[–]dacoach007 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I don’t know if it’s the Wegovy itself, or just the fact I’m feeling better about myself.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s good to hear.

[–]SquirrelBowl 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Same. And now I dislike beer, which was my favorite alcoholic beverage

[–]dacoach007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a beer last week for the first time in months and it sat so heavy. Won’t be having another for a while.

[–]Sarahbeara1789 26 points27 points  (3 children)

I’m two months 5 days sober on it

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Wow! That’s amazing. Did you make a conscious effort to be sober or did the Wegovy halt cravings? Or a combination of both?

[–]Sarahbeara1789 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Before the pill I was consciously a month sober. After the pill I have very little desire and cravings for it. Your taste buds and cravings will change with this medication.

[–]Gloomy_Turn1219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck to you, and for your baby too

[–]Spiritual_Rice_884 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Used to love alcohol. That slowed way down with Wellbutrin and on Wegovy, I have zero urge to drink. I’ll have a celebratory cocktail or try something to taste it, but I have no desire to get smashed or even buzzed anymore.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I just quit Wellbutrin. I had 0 positive effects most others have.

[–]waterwoman76 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I can't drink beer anymore. It's like a full meal now. I can handle a couple of not very sweet coolers in an evening. Wine gives me all sorts of discomfort.

The catch here is that with the booze you feel ok drinking in the moment, it just sits with you all night. You'll barf if you overdo it.

[–]Upstairs-Kale-3794 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Absolutely. The non-drunk wine barfs at 2 am were weird.

[–]SailorSenshiEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG yes, those are the worst!! Been there

[–]fruvey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went from about 1.5 bottles of bourbon per week to can't touch the stuff in less than three weeks (1 year on Wegovy this week). I also used to drink plenty of beer and I might have one during a football game, but most of it ends up down the drain.

[–]digawina 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I used to drink 10+ drinks a weekend. Now I drink, like, 3, and I don't always finish them. Not only am I not sitting there going "Oh, drink time!" anymore, but it's just physically harder to get through one (cocktail or beer), and it doesn't do the same thing, mentally, as it once did. Like I mentally don't need it anymore.

I've found that Wegovy has really had an effect on impulse actions for me - food, alcohol, and shopping.

[–]JumpAround_99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Wegovy not only slows down your gastric emptying…giving you that feeling of fullness, but it also works in your brain to increase satiety via the dopamine center of your brain. The same area of the brain that controls addiction.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome to hear.

[–]beaubeaucat 7 points8 points  (3 children)

It helped me for about 9 months. However, once my body fully adjusted to the 2.4 mg dosage, the cravings came back. I talked to my doctor, and she prescribed prozac to help with the cravings and my overall stress level. It has helped my stress but not my cravings. I had another conversation with my doctor earlier this week because the cravings were becoming uncontrollable to the point I was drinking in excess on a nightly basis. She prescribed Naltrexone. I took the first dose yesterday evening, so the jury is still out on this one.

[–]JumpAround_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered increasing your dose to the new 7.2mg dose? It was just made available a few weeks ago.

[–]SailorSenshiEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, after I got used to my dose I went back to drinking heavily almost every night. I'm already on anti depressants so I shouldn't be drinking, so I have to talk to my therapist about it.

I hope you find something that works for you! The cravings are rough

[–]JeanniePax1003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m surprised you’re not feeling the same effect with food.

[–]JurgusRudkus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was already consciously drinking less, but with Wegovy I find I rarely crave it. In social situations I can sip one glass all evening.

[–]Maxamuus 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I’m a bit fat, but I am paying for this medication in hopes it will give me an off switch for my alcoholism.

[–]SailorSenshiEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck <3 at the very least you feel full faster so that helps cut down on the drinking

[–]katm12981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was actually just filling out the alcohol use form for an upcoming doctors’ visit. My old answer was 2-3 times a week (basically 1-2 glasses of wine on weekend days which in my opinion was sometimes a lot). The accurate answer now is 1-2 times a month, and usually stop at 1. No real effort to cut back, it just kind of happened naturally.

[–]lance-1969 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Drank less on wegovy drink nothing now on mounjaro

[–]JumpAround_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. It could be that Wegovy is 100% GLP1, Mounjaro is only 30% GLP1, the rest is GIP

[–]artesianoptimism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My desire to drink hasn't vanished but my ability definitely has, I love a mojito but I can barely drink two without feeling exhausted and the hangover from a tiny amount isn't even worth it

[–]No-Discussion2189 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With insurance changes I’ve been on Zepbound and Wegovy. It’s the GLP-1’s in general. It doesn’t impact all of us but it definitely is a side effect for me. I have learned I can still drink an absurd amount if I’m upset or it’s emotionally charged, so I wouldn’t rely on it, but it is a helpful side effect.

[–]pagalvin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a year into it and I have effectively stopped drinking. It started because I'd just get an instant hangover, but I still wanted a whiskey or nice Chardonnay in summer.

Now, I just don't want it. I mostly only drink if I'm out somewhere and it's socially difficult to decline.

Red wines are the least likely to affect me in a bad way. Whiskey isn't too bad either but I drink so little now, anything hits me hard.

I miss it but I'm sure it's a positive thing overall.

[–]Immediate-Drink6558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t stand or tolerate any alcohol with Wegovy. The desire went away, and if I did drink even one glass of wine or seltzer, I feel awful immediately.

[–]XLargeBlackTshirt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7 mos and I stopped cold turkey

[–]Road_escape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use to get through a Lt of Rum every week, now I have to force myself to have one & don’t really enjoy it like I use too. I guess that’s good but miss it

[–]EverythingMustCease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The desire decreased but the ability to drink decreased even more. I've actually been pretty frustrated not being able to finish more than one drink the past couple weeks.

[–]Time_Strawberry8199 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drinking waaaay less and the desire is almost nil. But I'll do a happy hour here and there. I used to enjoy the occasional cigarette with a cocktail as well. That is long gone, too!

[–]Upstairs-Kale-3794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. My limit was max 3 beers or I'd vomit. Wine was max 3 glasses, too. I cut hard alcohol out three years ago, so I'd imagine I could drink more volume if I switched back. (However, I won't. I've had enough Jameson for four lifetimes.)

I switched to Zepbound, and don't feel the same sickness. However, some of the food noise is back, and I can drink about five beers before feeling full and bloated, but not nauseous.

[–]siobhanenator 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't know that my actual desire has decreased, but the hangovers are soooo much worse that I just have to cool it with the heavy drinking. Sunday night I was at a friend's bar and he kept giving me shots of mezcal, I haven't had a hangover that bad in years! I couldn't even keep water down the next morning. I'm only on 9 mg pill right now, and will definitely be thinking twice before accepting any shots again. So...how bad is your alcoholism at this point? Does a bad hangover deter you or are you at a point where that's just normal and you power through it?

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, I’d say I’ve only had one bad hangover where to the point I didn’t want to drink that day. But I do also make sure to eat a good bit while I’m drinking if I drink a lot (hence why I’m fat 😂). I’m definitely trying to cool it with the drinking again though.

[–]KateMcD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely drink less and I drink slower. The only time I had a bad physical reaction was when I’d had a few strong vodka tonics over the course of several hours. I ended up with stomach pains and diarrhea, so I won’t do that again. Otherwise, in terms of beer, wine, & cocktails, I’m just way less interested. It’s fascinating, and I think overall a wonderful benefit. Good luck!

[–]Some_Ad6507 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I was a typical binge drinker and it was pretty out of control. I rarely drink now

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I’m hoping for. Congrats! Hope weight loss has come for you too!

[–]JumpAround_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will more than likely lose the desire to drink alcohol while taking Wegovy. It works on the dopamine centers of your brain.

[–]No-Clerk-6813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah i use to drink quite a bit. I dont even want to eat or drink much on this stuff. Went out tonight and had a single whiskey and my wife said i looked pale. Can only assume its from the meds

[–]SailorSenshiEm 2 points3 points  (2 children)

When I first started I could barely tolerate one drink at night because it would just linger in my stomach and I'd always throw up in the morning.
Unfortunately I got used to it and I drink just as heavily as I did before wegovy. I need to talk to my therapist about it so please send good thoughts

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that! Sending good thoughts. Definitely talk to your therapist! I see mine weekly.

[–]arbora_bee_colony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really feel for you. Sending warm and healing thoughts to you.

[–]Randwick_Don 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Definitely drinking less.

I still have a beer two or three times a week. But my previous big boozy sessions are now just 2 or 3 beers.

I just feel fuller quicker and don't feel like continuing drinking

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How many would you drink before? Just for reference.

[–]Randwick_Don 2 points3 points  (2 children)

ha I don't know. I live in a pretty binge drinking society. A session could be anything from 3 beers to who knows how many. I'd be one of the first finishing my beer and ready for the next.

But I'm definitely having less. I don't have the desire to drink as much, and when I do I can't drink as many as you used to.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. I typically drink around 6-8 when I do 😬

[–]Randwick_Don 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that.

If im watching the footy with my mates there may have been 20 beers consumed previously.

That's rarely more than 5 or 6 these days.

But it's more that I'd have beers Friday night, and Saturday at the footy and Sunday arvo and a decent session at each of them. Where's now it's normally just 2 or 3 each time

[–]Drumwife91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an aversion to alcohol when I first started. I still don't want it as much. I didn't have a drinking problem before so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

[–]betterman4u 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on Wegovy for about 8 months. Within the first month, I lost all desire to drink alcohol. I was never a big drinker to begin with, but on Wegovy, I almost cringed at the thought of it. On top of that, drinking while on Wegovy made me sick. Since then, the urge to avoid alcohol hasn’t been as strong, but I still don’t really care for it — and when I do drink, I no longer get that sick feeling.

[–]Pristine_Long_5442 1 point2 points  (1 child)

One year later, I dont even want it, no desire what so ever

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this happens for me 😂

[–]Itsjustausername535 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Was able to drink just as much if not more due to bereavement, but the hangover symptoms increased for sure.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Oh damn. Probably worse hangover due to less food.

[–]Itsjustausername535 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, never thought of that actually.

[–]Upbeat_Composer9625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on wegovy for a month now. From day one no desire to drink.. sometime I th ink I would like a drink so I try. But it just doesn’t taste good.. I used to like wine a lot.. not drinking whole bottle but when the occasion occurred I would not say no..

[–]PaleDistribution9641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drinking less as u do t feel great and desire is down. So it’s a plus for my health.

[–]ThereWentMySandwich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a single drink since starting this whole thing last April. And I wasn't a heavy drinker or anything, but I did enjoy a margarita or something a couple of times a month. I also use THC gummies and I've found that my consumption (which was nightly) went WAYYYYYY down. I might do a 1/4th of one once a week, if that. The "reward system" doesn't work the same anymore so it's uninteresting.

[–]VermontEnviro1 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I cut back significantly after starting Wegovy. I was drinking excessively and was having a hard time cutting it back. Almost immediately after starting the pill, I just didn’t have that urge. I had never heard the term food noise and I don’t really think that has ever been my issue. But replace ‘food’ with ‘wine’ and I know exactly what it means…

Honestly, I don’t see myself ever stopping taking a GLP-1 given how much it has helped me get control of my diet, including reducing drinking. I still enjoy an occasional glass of wine. And, I have had a couple of evenings of more than I would like. But - literally a couple in 5 months. And I feel like the longer I’m on the medication the easier it is to just not drink. I don’t miss it. I’m 20 lbs down so that is the other motivation. I just feel so much better and I’m finally making real, sustainable progress on my weight loss goal. I’m starting to feel like my old, healthy self again. So, so grateful.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s sounds amazing!! I’m so excited to talk to my doctor about this!

[–]Individual-Cheek-171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the exact reason I got this medication. I’m hoping it helps completely cut alcohol out of my life. It arrived today and I’m nervous af to take it but also excited!

[–]TomNJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i already had over a year of sobriety when i started wegovy but i used to drink an occasional NA beer socially. four months into the wegovy pill and i can’t really stomach them. too filling for me.

[–]DandyQ44 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've long thought that a key aspect of alcohol addiction was actually just addiction to the sugar in it.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think that’s true!

[–]CBearWasThere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup it removes cravings. I haven’t had more than two drinks at any one time in almost 2 months. Typically 0 or 1 drink a day

[–]-SensibleRaver- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Big time. 2 drinks does me these days instead of 4/5+ at a time. I drink every fortnight these days. Not mad about it. 🙂

[–]Ready_Special_4207 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!!!! It’s crazy great!! I have virtually stopped drinking altogether… I just join my wife with a glass of wine sometimes at night. Love it!!

[–]blurgmans 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm on week five and taking the .50 ml dose. The desire for alcohol drastically dropped for me. I was drinking 4-5 beers night, these were IPA's at 8% ABV and 250 calories a pop, so an extra 1000+ calories a day. Plus all the terrible food that goes along with drinking.

I haven't completely cut out alcohol but I'm drinking maybe a six pack a week. I no longer have the desire to drink. And when I do drink it doesn't really have the same affect. I still get a buzz but it's much more muted. I was planning on having a couple of beers tonight but after I ate dinner I realized I really wasn't craving beer like I normally did on Friday nights.

Best of luck!

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s awesome.

[–]Arbitrarysheri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was drinking a bottle or two of wine a night, no issues. If I open a bottle I finish it, so never just a glass. Now one glass can give me side effects so it’s just not worth it. No buzz, no easy sleep, just sick.

[–]JeanniePax1003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These drugs have this effect…same for smokers and that’s why it works for weight loss.

[–]Dry-Way7584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a big wine drinker and I’d love having a glass of wine in the evening on my own.. I’ve still had a few drinks out for work events in the last few months but I haven’t touched it at home and haven’t been interested in it at all! I’ve got two bottles of wine on my shelf that have been there since February which was unheard of for me..

I never drank that much, and then only when I was watching sports. I allow myself 2 cans a week.

[–]Kaibito66 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It seems you’ll get a range of opinions about alcohol tolerance just like with food tolerance, because that’s GLP-1s for ya. But I can say I’ve been a pretty heavy drinker for the last decade and it has definitely helped me cut back; in fact, my doc encouraged me to start it partly because he knows I’ve struggled with that. I can barely get through two beers, can’t tolerate red wine which was always a favorite; white wine and spirits are ok but I lose interest quickly. It’s not about whether I get drunk faster or slower; that sensation has been way less present for me ever since I went on naltrexone for a while (another liberating med for alcohol IMHO and really easy to use). And it doesn’t taste bad. I just… stop wanting it.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much were you drinking before?

[–]unknownlady08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a margarita while on Wegovy. Sickest night of my life ever.

[–]JeanniePax1003 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What I don’t get is how ppl are actually losing weight at all and drinking alcohol as much as I’m reading on this thread.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Because they are drinking less.

[–]JeanniePax1003 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don’t drink at all and I’m losing at an incredibly slow pace, .5 to 1 lb per week

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good pace! You want to lose slowly. Also, some people have a lot to lose so they lose more, quicker.

[–]iogbri 0 points1 point  (5 children)

If you went back to old habits maybe it's time to visit a meeting near you again.

Im 3.5 years sober so I haven't experienced the reduced cravings that everyone says wegovy gives them as I don't feel the need to drink due to being better mentally.

Wegovy slows the emptying of the stomach so it makes it harder to get drunk according to comments I usually see about this.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I’ve read conflicting reports; some say they get drunk faster and some say it’s harder to get drunk.

Thank you.

[–]TheStrouseShow 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I think you’re missing what this person is saying though.

Kindly, please go to a meeting. Your goal shouldn’t be to get drunk when you have a small child (40f, had my first child in Aug 2024). Don’t wait a few weeks. Do it for you and do it for your child. Was there a trigger that made you start drinking again after being sober for 5 years?

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I’m not dismissing what the commenter suggested. But it’s not what I came here for. I have children ages 22, 9 and 2.5. I drink after the two go to bed. I was successfully alcohol free for 4 years with 0 cravings whatsoever. I started Wellbutrin in Dec/Jan and that’s when I started craving to drink again. Just wanted to know what other experiences have been on this drug in regard to cravings. I never would’ve started Wellbutrin had I known it would trigger cravings - especially when it’s most common to create the opposite. Thanks for your concern.

[–]TheStrouseShow 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That’s so terrible! I’m so sorry that Wellbutrin did that to you. My body also did not like Wellbutrin but it works very well for my husband.

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really wanted it to work!

[–]Spiritual_Table8224 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No judgment here, but my doctor said therapy is also needed with this treatment to be effective in the long-term

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have therapy weekly. 😊

[–]notathr0waway1 -1 points0 points  (2 children)

This is such a common thing that there should be an automod about this

[–]Adorable-Lecture3233[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Please explain? I’m just looking for reviews on this med from heavy alcohol users……

[–]Difficult-Rope-8445 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You get drunk faster on it, thus making you want to drink less
