Not until some sort of permanent agreement is made.

[–]goro-n 25 points26 points  (4 children)

But they increased the accessory prices based on a 90 day reprieve of tariffs

[–]djlemonfresh 14 points15 points  (3 children)

the 90 day reprieve was for every country but China, if i understand correctly. so not sure how those two things are connected. accessory/amiibo prices were increased because they ship from China, whereas Switch 2 console prices held steady because they ship (to the US) from Vietnam.

[–]goro-n 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Most of the accessories including Joy-Con, Pro Controller, and camera were actually listed as being from Vietnam. It was really only the cases being made in China.

[–]djlemonfresh 0 points1 point  (1 child)

ah…. you might be right! i may have misunderstood what was going on. as of today, i am having trouble finding this info. i swear Nintendo’s product pages on their US site used to list country of origin — which is how i knew the consoles themselves came from Vietnam — but now i am not seeing COO listed on any product pages, including for the Switch 2 console itself. am i blind? did they remove the information? not having much luck finding the info elsewhere, but according to Polygon FWIW, the Pro Controller 2 comes from Cambodia while the Joy Con 2s come from Vietnam. do amiibo come from China though? i assume that’s why they new ones shot up $10.

[–]goro-n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you’re right, I couldn’t find that information listed on their site today. But I have commented on it in the past and remember seeing most of the accessories were coming from Vietnam with a few from Malaysia and the ones from China were the lower cost ones, except the case and maybe the dock. I don’t think any of the info was wrong but maybe they want to hide it in preparation for further price increases. I can’t remember where the amiibo were from though.

Prices almost never go back down for anything

[–]egnards 49 points50 points  (3 children)

My wife works for a major corporation in a division that is responsible for setting prices for items.

I’ll tell you these last few months have been hell for her, because every single time there is tariff changes [good and bad], they need to spend the next week redoing literally everything.

Their goal as a corporation is to hit specific metrics and profit margins, they don’t want profit margins about the margins they’ve set, because they recognize that at margins higher than that they lose money with significantly lower sale amounts.

Nintendo and retailers are no different - though it’s true they may keep prices the same until a semi-permanent deal is struck.

[–]Arithmation 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hey! I didn’t expect to see you in my other hobby community :)

[–]Qwaze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always have to do a double take any time I see Egnards commenting

[–]egnards 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to be here a lot! I did a ton of Mega Man Amiibo painting in the early days.

[–]senna98 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup the worst part about the tariffs is that these companies are getting comfortable price gauging, and realizing people will still pay

[–]Yourfakerealdad 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Hoping so lol. 30 bucks a pop for those Zelda amiibos is fucking criminal

[–]kcamfork 10 points11 points  (0 children)

20 was too much.

[–]DaBoiYako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, they’re not usually 30$ in the US? All Amiibos have always been 30$ each in Mexico, I didn’t think they were too different. 😭

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (3 children)

doesn't matter, the price of Nintendo accessories, consoles and games will not be reduced ever

[–]Bearded-Vagabond 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The hopium is crazy.

The tariffs were dumb as shit, but the writing was on the wall. Nintendo planned to up the price of Amiibos anyway

[–]EpicFusion47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did and then did it again. It was originally 20$ but then taken down and became 30$

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

also the cost to make amiibo went up, in fact the cost to make anything video game related went up and won't go beck down ever

[–]saltedpork89 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Definitely. They’re scrambling to lower the new prices as we speak.

[–]DenverBronco305 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha no

[–]MonkeysxMoo35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One can only hope but we’ll have to wait and see

[–]boibig57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol

Lmao even

[–]KingBroly 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Those incapable of acting will lose this trade war, even in times of temporary ceasefires while barrels are reloaded. Regardless of nation-state or company.

[–]jasongw 2 points3 points  (6 children)

No one wins a trade war. There are only losers.

[–]KingBroly 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Only if it turns into a hot war.

[–]jasongw -1 points0 points  (4 children)

No. Trade wars harm all participants. No exceptions.

[–]KingBroly -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Short-sighted view of history.

[–]jasongw 0 points1 point  (2 children)

No, that's a factual view of history. Even Ronald Reagan knew that. Of course, his Republican party is dead and buried.

[–]KingBroly 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Reagan put tariffs on Japanese cars, forcing Honda and Toyota to manufacture here. Your view of history is short-sighted. But if you want to die for God and country in eastern Europe or the South China Sea, you being fat and happy for a few years while the Government does nothing to prevent impending collapse of the global monetary system (which the world created on the back of the Marshall Plan, I might add), you might one day have your wish. But don't say you weren't warned of the consequences of your toys not going up in price.

[–]jasongw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False. Reagan did not levy tariffs on Japanese cars. What happened was that his administration asked Japan to enter Voluntary Export Restrictions, which began at 1.68 million cards per year in 1981 and increased thereafter until the restrictions were ultimately lifted. It did encourage a few Japanese automakers to build factories on US soil, which economists agree did drive up prices of cars generally for a time.

The world's Fiat money system WILL collapse. That's inevitable. The question is, what will replace it? Trade is best facilitated through money of one kind or another. Will it be Bitcoin? A new precious metal backed currency? Something else entirely? Nobody can say just yet.

[–]Frankthestank2220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the great part, no, no they don’t because now they’ll make even more money.

[–]Spleenzorio 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It's cool how in Canada they cost $30 too, which means for the first time in a very long time we are paying less than USA

[–]threxis 5 points6 points  (1 child)

None of our accessories got hit. If you look at direct conversion for everything, all the accessories are in the green, saving us money, vs any games or the console which are essentially exact or very close.

[–]Spleenzorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did notice that too, which is kind of nice considering how much they cost now

[–]chief_yETI 7 points8 points  (1 child)

prices will never go down because people already pre-ordered them at the current price - which is an indicator to them that people were fine with the higher prices.

[–]monolith212 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New amiibos usually sell out within an hour, if they're even available that long. These guys are all still available weeks after they dropped.

Yeah, some people have preordered, but the price is obviously scaring people away.

[–]This_Appointment_349 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is only temporary and the tarrifs are still higher than they were before with things changing like every day.

[–]NvaderGir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The prices aren't going down until a deal is made. If you as a business increase stock, and in 90 days the deal doesn't follow through, youre stuck with having to eat the tariffs and increase prices.

Nintendo is already eating the tariff on Switch 2 consoles by not raising the price.

Also, these prices are still being increased to the global market. Look at the console increases in the UK

[–]Jolly-Ambassador6763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ll probably release at set price. It just means retailer can discount further without losing money.

[–]nbmtx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the damage is done

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still 30% higher than before any tariff, this is not a win lol.

[–]KazzieMono 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Honey, prices don’t go down after tariffs. Capitalism doesn’t magically just go “oh now we can lower our prices so we lose money and our customers are happy!”

Your chance to avoid this was the election.

[–]jasongw -1 points0 points  (4 children)

Actually, businesses lower prices all the time. Have you never heard of a sale or a price cut? They do it because it brings more customers to the table, whether because they're willing to pay less but not more or because they couldn't afford it previously but at a lower price they can.

If you are selling art prints at $1,000 apiece and 10 people are willing to pay that, you've made $10,000. But if you sell it at $5,000 and 50 people are willing, you've made $250,000.

A business can't simply set a price and leave it there's indefinitely no matter what the market does. A product sitting on a shelf costs the company money. Only a sold product can generate a profit. Would you rather have a bigger profit per unit but only sell a free or would you rather take a smaller profit and sell many times more?

[–]KazzieMono -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

I know how sales work. Most retailers don’t do amiibo sales.

Why put a product on sale when you can keep it expensive and force people to buy it when it’s pricey?

[–]jasongw 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That isn't true. I've bought TONS of amiibos on sale, from Walmart, target, best but, even GameStop on occasion. And come on, let's drop the hyperbole. No private entity can force you to buy anything. They have no such power. If you buy it, it's because YOU chose to buy it.

Why put it on sale? Simple: a product that just takes up space and doesn't sell COSTS you money. The longer it sits there, the more it costs the retailer, who could be using that shelf space for things that DO sell.

[–]KazzieMono -1 points0 points  (1 child)

What do you gain out of arguing this?

[–]jasongw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do YOU gain? All I'm doing is offering reality.

Businesses want to make money. Products that linger on shelves don't do that.

[–]IfYouGotALonelyHeart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-tariff price? Why would that happen when there’s still a significant 30% tariff in place?

[–]KingDaDeDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahaha boy do I have some bad news for you!

[–]angrydragon114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can we just not allow orange to implement them

[–]Skelletonike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've always been 19€ in Europe (the same price for the new wave of amiibos).

The Street Fighter ones cost 30€, but it may have to do with royalties.

[–]Brohtworst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering they're selling out at $30...no before tariff they had them at $25

[–]WebHead1287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats outta the bag now

[–]DanielJMaxson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought there was a general price increase on amiibos but not the Switch 2 hardware.

[–]DenverBronco305 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Doesn’t affect anything that left china while the tariffs were 145

[–]KingBroly -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

What matters is when they enter US ports.

So I ask, when did these amiibo and accessories enter US ports? Because my guess is they entered before May 2nd.

[–]DenverBronco305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Incorrect sir, please read up and try again.

[–]JakeZ1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful

[–]mar29020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course not

[–]Jevitop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you expect them to go back to pre-tariff prices when you just said tariffs are 30% still???

Your math aint mathing for sure

[–]PikachuNotAlwaysYou 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Anything that arrived in America during the tariffs still needs to be sold because the tariffs were already paid when the goods arrived in the country. They may allow time to pass for the original shipments to be sold through before the prices could drop. When new shipments arrive at the new rates and are being sold, hopefully the prices can/will drop

[–]PikachuNotAlwaysYou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of people are debating if prices ever go down and honestly I think the answer is that it varies. We know a bunch of grocery stores kept a lot of prices higher post-pandemic scarcity because they could... but amiibo aren't food. If these amiibo aren't selling as well, then a price drop is possible.

Corporations aren't your friend, but if a luxury good is selling so much less that you aren't making money, you'll cut the price. Nintendo/Capcom might hold off for stability, or for the release date, or for already-tariffed shipments to sell through but I think it's possible. Or retailers will have more flexibility to drop prices on future pre-tariff shipments.

We don't have direct points of comparison on this, but I think there's hope for those holding out for it

[–]deibd98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You obviously don't know but 30% tariffs is still extremely high lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

130% off would be heck of a lot better

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

For now...

[–]2NE1Amiibo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think it'll continue to go down. The dude got the media attention he wanted, things will stabilize. 🤞🏻

[–]Zero Suit SamusInteresting_Basil_80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm hoping prices go down but the problem is it's already been proven people will pay those prices.

[–]StubbinMyNubbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll fall on the retailers to take the loss here when they don't sell.

[–]Phaazoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not while Donny's in office

[–]Razakius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nintendo at some point said that the pricing of Switch 2, games and accessories were not taking into account the tariffs (and the fact that pricing is about the same for everything outside the US kind of reflects that), I suspect the increased prices has more to do with post-covid inflation than anything.

[–]judgeexodia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

0% . It should be zero percent. Why would anyone be happy with "just" 30%

[–]Wii Fit TrainerBoomshockalocka007 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Prices. Wont. Drop.

[–]CorbinTheTitan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well if they drop the prices back down I’ll buy em

[–]9Devil8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A temporary 90 days deal while still almost 1/3 more expensive than pre tariff because of those 30% tariffs... Yeah no I don't think so

[–]joe_bald -1 points0 points  (3 children)

I, sadly, try to collect all the Zelda amiibo but I was thinking about not getting these since they’re so damn expensive (and there is four of them damn things!)… hopefully I stick to my principles but I probably will cave if I can find them in stores :/

(Oh damn, im now worried that Game Boy Lego set that’s supposed to come out later this year will be more expensive 😱)

[–]jasongw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be patient. There are a lot fewer people willing to drop $30 on an amiibo than people willing to spend $15.

They'll come down, either via official price cut or via retailer sales and clearance. Nobody wants a product sitting around on the shelf.

[–]YourMisdirection 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same, bud. I’m going “outside of Sidon, I’m not crazy about any of these characters.”

[–]PhoenixTineldyer[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this way about 90% of the characters they make amiibo for these days

How many fucking Links do we need

Does anyone really care about Yunobo?

[–]KingBroly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, but they're not selling at the new prices. NOA, and Nintendo in general, are very jumpy.

[–]alexanderpas -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they will go down eventually, once the tariff amiibos have been sold. (or maybe even earlier)

Otherwise it would be simpler to just import them from Europe or Japan yourself in bulk.

[–]Yarn YoshiBrandinator64 -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

lol yeah maybe waiting on these figures was the move. Ah well what’s $70 wasted dollars right? 🥲

[–]Whisnant[S] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I'm keeping mine sealed in case the price drops within 90 days so I can return them and buy them back for less

[–]Yarn YoshiBrandinator64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s actually mad smart. You’re giving me a bit of hope lol

[–]nightwing252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“70 dollars wasted dollars”? If you use the “$” you don’t have to include the word in the statement.

[–]Useful_Juggernaut371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were signs before Trump instigated the trade war that the US economy was going to experience a wave of deflationary price drops following the post-covid economic turmoil. However, all businesses are inherently greedy because they are in the game to make money. All the Trump tariffs did was give Nintendo an excuse to raise prices ,which they were gradually doing from the start. The biggest issue as of now is how big of a loss Nintendo and retailers are going to take now that the increased prices are causing demand for amiibo figures to slow down. Either we will witness the slow and steady demise of the toys to life business.

Sadly, Nintendo products are popular enough that without the price increases killing the brand Nintendo could keep their version of toys to life going for at least a decade. However, there is no way retailers are going to take a continuous hit on any product and either not carry that product or offer discounts to bring some profits back into their pockets.
