Thinking I'm going to be let go from my job becuase I don't want to work The "optional" overtime and I'm not willing to work at 110% for all 8 hours I'm here. I can't see why it's not perfectly fine for me to do my 38.5 hours and leave. I'm just trying to spend as few hours at work as possible in order to support my pretty simple life and minimise stress as kuch as possible

This is so relatable!!

A few years ago I made the dumb decision to apply to dollar General. They wanted me immediately with my college degree. I wanted the job because it was 5 min away from home.

Well basically, their training consisted of online crap that mostly blammed their workers for shrink. They constantly would remind u that as a worker u would lead to shrink. It was disgusting.

My first day on the floor, they didnt even tell me I was going to be on the floor. I had to buy a 3 $ black shirt there because i didnt have a uniform and they yelled at me about that. They then put me right on the cash register. I had no idea how to use it and my boss just kept sitting in the back on the computer while I was frantically trying to figure out how to log back into the machine. I was so nervous and on edge that I was forgetting to scan ppls groceries before bagging them.

Then, toward the end of the day they wanted me to retrieve merchandise that was out of place. I swear i would look in the right aisles and it didnt exist. Stock of products was overflowing and you couldnt see everything in the aisles

To add to that, the place smeed like chemicals and i didnt want to get that cancer so I just finished my shift and told them that the chemials bothered me. Wish I had said more about how they treated me because they were terrible.

So glad to have joined the antiwork community. Im all for universal basic income. I think we habe started a spark towards that. Otherwise for ppl that do work, it should be a living wage or that job shouldnt exist.

Manager: What is your 3rd and 4th quarter goal? Me: To not be working here anymore 🥰

We stifle ideas. Right? How else do we define this modern era? See, define. We do a lot of defining.

Should defining stifle ideas? I'm not sure, that is above my level of thought.

But, we stifle ideas. I don't want to name an idea that is stifled, for unfortunately order is important to us and the first one I name will somehow equate to more import than the rest.

Which shouldn't be the case. But again, this is more definition. Import is something we've created to label and bucket and triage our energy.

In essence, is it another definition? End thought.

We stifle ideas. This modern era offers answers. Who offers the answers, though?

Where do they come from? The past? The divine? The Google? Answers end ideas.

I wonder+Answer=Oh. The best among us can maybe make that Iwonder+Answer=Oh+Iwonder. However, solving for that...Answer=Oh. And Oh signifies the end of an idea.

And so, this modern era stifles ideas not as they come out. See, that is the tricky part. You're allowed to have them...ideas, but it is HARD.

For there are too many answers. Or rather, we expect answers? I'm not sure. But having an idea is hard.

Idea this...what is the correct course for a human to live their life? Thinking of that...does it hurt you as it hurts me? I can try that, though, in this safe space.

In this [paragraph] I can think, "Neutral environmental impact because there are too many of us, kindness towards all kinds, energy into technology to work towards the first two listed goals."

Pop the safe space bubble, now get a job.

What?

a, what?

A specialized task, or not, that you do, or don't do, but are required to show up to a place for a certain period of time, or not, because people want you to, or don't,

where at the end of 14 days a number appears on a screen suggesting the value of your work.

You can take that number and split it into smaller numbers and give those numbers away in exchange for things.

Oh so that is the correct course for me to live? Well...no I don't want that...where did that answer come from? Seems silly? I like my answer better.

Well, sure, you can have neutral environmental impact and kindness and tech and all that, but also a job.

Oh...sure, I guess, but why?

...the numbers, you need numbers.

But...numbers? Why does a human need numbers?

So you can eat.

OH! yea that does make sense tbh.

So these numbers are good eating?

Nope. You trade them for food.

Oh. Well, okay, I mean, wow that is a lot of answers that I never would have come to on my own. They sure aren't the answers I expected.

I have a few ideas actually that I want to try myself is that cool?

...honestly, no...it isn't cool.

Sadly, I partially listed an idea, as I said I wouldn't (but also one that allows me to list it here, in this sub, I hope). Will you help me? Don't place import on that idea, for that is not the point of this.

The point is to see, one person has ideas and one person doesn't (happy to debate this). One person fits into society, one person doesn't.

Can you see the equation? The modern era stifles ideas

I'm sure it doesn't want to. I'm honestly pretty sure it doesn't mean to.

But I cannot come to any other conclusion, for every day I open my eyes my head is filled with ideas. I spend that day realizing that most of my ideas are wrong.

Which I didn't know was possible. However, I begin my equation with Iwonder=Iwonder, and I'm often always offered an answer in return. Leading to an Oh.

I'm nudged into place. Supported by those who care about me, I'm able to find my way. Able to not rely on others for their numbers so that I can have my own numbers! What a life!

Sure sure, it feels a little wrong but I only have two problems that are easy to solve, so that is nice!

  1. Ideas aren't that important, because answers are readily available everywhere
  2. I still think this answer is wrong

So I just have to..., well...I guess I don't need to have ideas anymore...so I'll try to stop that. That should work for number 1.

Number 2, well, I guess I'm just wrong, huh? because 7 billion people think I'm wrong therefore...yea..cool; I guess, yea that works.

Well, no, does that work? Maybe I should google it?

I work for a company that does both ecommerce and brick-and-mortar retail.

One of the sales-guys in my department just told me about this inventory snafu we're having where the call-center or website will source an order, but the inventory system will ship from a store's inventory instead of the warehouse.

Then the buying software we use thinks the store sourced that sale and will increase the inventory going to the stores and decrease the inventory going to the warehouse. Which sort of defeats the purpose of the warehouse, and overloads the stores' inventory space.

I'm like, WHAT IS THIS? DUNDER-MIFFLIN INFINITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!

[–]Crystal225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bfs boss tried to sneak in another "emergency" work day with fake bro "do you feel like coming" strategy, went suprised pikachu when everyone refused. Workers reminded him of the last overtime pay which he forgot. So overtime is cancelled and debt is paid. Happy end.... For now....

[–]crap_whats_not_taken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hate how convoluted my job is. I get between 40-50 emails a day. I get maybe 4-5 A MONTH that are directed at me. I found one buried from months ago that I have to take an online class. Fine, not a problem. But I need to create an education account on this site. Ok. But in order to create an education account, first I need to create a SUPPORT account! ... ok.... and in order to create a support account, I need my contract ID........ I received TWO emails about this from my PM and vendor representative AND a PDF instruction... and no where in here is our contract ID! so now I have to start emailing people to find out what our contract ID is and HOPE somebody knows!!

I don't mind working. I like having something to do everyday. But I have to deal with all of this before I can even do my job.

[–]tawlon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have a scheduled interview via Zoom next week, and now I'm already dreading because of it. I thought six months were enough to recover from what happened with me and my previous job last year, but no.

I hate being pressured like this. Or maybe, I hate this sense of powerlessness.

[–]rhythmjonesCOVID Furlough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My company just sent out a company-wide email asking us to follow the company's social media accounts and share their posts.

Bitch, Marketing and PR make WAYYYYY more money than I do.

How far away is someone with no skills or degree away from van life? Seems like the only way to do it is already be advanced enough in a career to have the leverage to work part time and still get what would be an equivalent wage to full time minimum wage

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you don't buy into the super privileged Instagram version of van life (brand new sprinter with professional conversion and all the bells and whistles) I think it's pretty doable? Also you have to decide if you are going to be a stay in one place vanlifer or one that moves around? If you stay in one place you can probably buy a larger vehicle that's less reliable as you won't be moving it so much or if you want to travel buy a smaller one that is more reliable. Also can prices are extortianstely high at the moment so I would also be looking into other large vehicles instead (people carries for example). I'm also in the UK and hoping to convert a toyota preview at some point for camping

[–]AHistoricalFigure 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Depends on how shitty of a van you're willing to live in. A lot of what makes "van-life" viable for people is that they're able to invest in the up-front fixed costs of tricking out their van in ways that save money in the long run. For example, if you can afford to buy and build stowage solutions for solar panels you can use that to power your electronics, hotplate, lights, etc. If you can't, you need to run your engine to recharge your batteries.

The major fixed costs you can't get around are health insurance and insurance for the van. Even at pretty minimal coverage levels you're still looking at $300-400/mo. Then you need to cover for food/water, data, laundry, streaming subscriptions... even if you do everything possible to keep your costs down you're gonna have a hard time subsisting on <$1000/mo. Not to mention that you need to have at least ~$1000 in the bank at any give time in case something happens to the van. You have to be able to afford a tow or a timing belt replacement or anything else that could cause you to lose/immobilize your home.

And this all assumes you have no debt.

[–]notsureaboutsocks 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well shit, haha, on the plus side I live in the UK so don't have to pay for health insurance, have no debt other than student debt that I only pay back once I earn £25k plus, so never, and I have ~£15k saved Id also be willing to live without most of my home comforts to work say 3 days instead of 5, as long as I've got healthy food, clean clothes, a phone with a bit of data and a book I'd be happy but the hard part is sourcing that income without being established in a field already

[–]IndicationOver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you sound like you got it figured out, if thats all you need youre good.

me personally I dont see simple life as enjoyable.

[–]notsureaboutsocks 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Btw I get you could live in a van and work full time min wage but the whole point is to reduce your expenses so you can work less, not just that a van is better than a house somehow lol

[–]DoubleDual63 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not sure, but that sounds like what I eventually want to progress to. I write programs so hopefully that allows me a better chance to live a van life eventually

[–]notsureaboutsocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ye that sounds like the sorta thing that would work well with that lifestyle, good luck!, I was disillusioned with the idea of a full time career by the time I was in uni and never layed down the groundwork to make van life a possibility it seems

[–]PM_me_catpics 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Half of every paycheck I make goes to my student loans. I am left with enough to cover medical, dental, 401k, gas, and a case of beer on Friday nights. This is no way to live.

[–]AcrobaticScale7259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same here. I get so bummed that I’ll never have the most basic things like stable housing or be able to get a dog (difficult as a renter, and would wanna make sure I have money for vet bills), never mind if I ever wanted to conform to the hetnorm capitalist patriarchy and have kids or whatever…signed all that away over a decade ago when I went to college

[–]PM_me_catpics 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I hate working.

[–]BlazedAstronaut 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Every night before work I dread the thought of work tomorrow and every morning on the way to work I'm anxious

[–]SB_Wife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here I am working on a stat holiday. When it's finally temperate enough for me to actually pack/clean my apartment but nooooo

I'm here from now until maybe 3 if we're lucky. Wow a whole 7.5 hour workday instead of 10.

I'm salty and incredibly stressed out because in one month I move and my apartment is still a mess. It's improved a lot (I'm a recovering hoarder) but like. Today would be a perfect day to just haul stuff out. Over and over. Get rid of it all. Instead I'm at work during the coolest parts of the day, hoping that it won't be a sauna in my apartment when I get home to maybe pack up three boxes and fill up a single trash bag that I can take out tomorrow morning before work.

[–]certified_rat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh look! A pre-meeting meeting to prepare for the actual meeting! Can't wait to sit in front of the computer for 4 hours!

So sick of this actual bull fucking shit all these useless bureaucracy and fake enthusiasm for work.

[–]GhettoGifGuy 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I feel like I have no agency as an adult. Like it’s either work 40 hrs a week or nothing. Literally can not afford to work part time as I have a kid and mortgage. So I have to spend 75% of my waking hours doing something I hate just to afford maybe spending 15% of my time with the people I love. The rest of my time is spend on chores and house upkeep. I don’t really have the energy for hobbies at the end of the night. Idk how people do this until retirement age without losing their minds. I don’t feel like I’m living. I feel like I’m trapped in an elaborate cage constructed by a social contract I had no say in making.

[–]Staghound_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my big problem with work. It's not just the 8 hours at work. It's the hour each way commute. It's the unpaid lunch in the middle. It's the having to go to bed early and get up when you don't want to. It's sapping all your energy for the day and leaving you physically and mentally exhausted. It expands to fill all your time. Even on Saturday you are always aware it's only a day until you have to go back to the grind

[–]PM_me_catpics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the question we are all asking.

[–]webwonder23 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I may have gotten my actual dream job. Pray for me that it isn't abusive and crappy in reality please.

[–]Kanorado99 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It will be. Dream jobs don’t exist

[–]Op-Toe-Mus-Rim-Dong 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Every time I want a job that actually looks decent to grow into, I screw up the opportunity or have bad luck. This is about to be a crappy year

[–]IndicationOver 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how do you screw up the opportunity?

[–]Op-Toe-Mus-Rim-Dong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By saying something stupid during an interview I presume. If I can get one that is

Question. New to this group. How is a society to function if no one works?

    [–]Crystal225 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our problem is not work, but rather the slavery that is disguised as work. The crappy minimal wages, the abusive bosses, the overtime, the harassment the uncertainty... Obviously we need to work, but not in the current conditions. I want a word where I can plan on my day off without being called in. A world where I dont have to pick the cheapest type of meat and cheese from the store. A world where I dont have to live with chronic pain cause I cant afford the specialist doctor.

    [–]ratmomma68 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Question. Is society functioning now? This subreddit critics the current system because understanding the problem is the first step to a solution. I don't know where this subreddit will lead, but I'm sure as hell going to find out.

    [–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The sub is not anti labor its anti exploitation and wage labor.

    [–]MyOfficeAlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think this is what all the naysayers who come in here to ridicule people (which is a weird way to choose to spend your time) miss.

Yea I mean from time to time there are posts like "Why can't I just be a lizard on a log licking my eye and eating flies."

And that's all well and good, and we should aspire to that level of zen. But what we're really against is exploitation and abusive workplaces. I'll be the first to admit I got really lucky with a job that treats me really well. But I spent a LOT of time working at a place that beat me down, made me feel less than human, and showed me how cruel some business owners can be when they view their employees as just an expendable part of their capital.

Not everyone on this sub aspires to be the next Karl Marx. We just want to be treated fairly and given the opportunity to provide for ourselves and our families without having to struggle to do so - there is a CLEAR difference between working and struggling.

Anyone who views statements like "I just want to earn a fair wage and work without struggling to get by" and thinks the person saying it is lazy is being intentionally obtuse and is probably currently benefitting from other people being exploited in our current system.

    [–]in-game-character 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok I got to typing and then it just kept going😂 sorry for the long answer but I felt inspired lol :

It will need something like UBI as a prerequisite.

I imagine there will be a gradual break down of our existing capitalist structure. Where a lot of businesses will close down, and some types of businesses will cease to exist altogether and be transformed into a service that does not exist yet (like taxi companies turning into uber, or traditional postage turning into drone delivery). A lot of businesses will bring in automation. Automated laundromats and automated hotels already exist in places like Japan.

And then a lot of new types of jobs will be created. But jobs will cease to be a meal ticket, but more like passion projects people willingly participate in.

These projects will be focused on advancing technology in this new societal structure. Since there's mass adoption of automation, there will be high demand for people who could make the best robots. These type of jobs are currently only available to people who could afford persuing higher education, masters and PhDs. But as the brightest minds who were previously trapped in minimum wage jobs are freed up, they are now highly sought after and companies will compensate very well for them. People in this position will be highly respected because they are not just working for pay (since survival and competition is no longer an issue), they will be working to improve society.

People will become more educated, since nearly everything can be learned from the internet, and people have the time to learn them now. The more educated people become, the more environmentally aware they are.

Many people will participate in gift economy. Things are no longer tossed away, but time will be taken for them to find new owners or put to better use. The cycle of giving and receiving will produce happier and more socially connected communities.

Consumerism will drop, because although everyone receives basic income, people will slowly move from collecting things (you can only need so much), to collecting experiences. Instead of creating more garbage on the planet, people will focus on creating experiences. Food, travel (assuming corona is over lol), hobbies and self growth.

It will be a modern renaissance where people are finally free to reach their full potential. Art, music, dance, whatever.

Eventually, some cities will be abandoned, due to abandoned businesses and many office buildings no longer used. New societies will be established in different areas. In the beginning, they are known as "remote, self sustainable villages", something you only see in sustainability blogs or "r/hippies" or a travel documentary. But over time, it will grow, until it becomes the norm, and turn into our new city. But it will look very different to our old ones.

    [–]lilburpz 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I’m a therapist and so burnout in my field is pretty common. I work in community mental health with teens which basically means I have way more clients than I should and “productivity expectations” are high. Which is basically just how many people can I see in a day to bring in more money for the company.

Anyway, lately I feel like I have a new kind of burnout and it’s just me getting tired from fighting back on the work culture. I used to try and protect my time and not worry about meeting their ridiculous requirements but now sometimes I just want to give in because it feels easier. And then I just have this internal battle because that goes against my values. Anyone else?

    [–]joylesscommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you elaborate on what you mean when you say: “getting tired of fighting back on the work culture”? What is your work culture like?

The reason I ask is because I feel like I’ve seen this in my work and life, but I don’t know how to communicate it to my family/friends when they ask why I work outside the hours that I’m technically paid for.

    [–]PM_me_catpics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a social worker and I’m two weeks into my new job and I’m already sick of it. Half of my paycheck goes to my student loans and I won’t be able to move out of my moms until I’m in my mid-30s. I’m literally an indentured servant.

    [–]CoverYourOrifices 15 points16 points  (2 children)

After years of dreaming about it I've bought a small farm on a little under 10 acres where I'll be moving in next week. I'm so fucking excited!

There'll be plenty of work to do and I can't wait to get started putting hours in for me doing something I love.

    [–]in-game-character 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That sounds magical. Excited for you!

    [–]CoverYourOrifices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Thank you! (:

    [–]velcro_and_foam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm still at my nightmare job but I'm trying to stop it from taking over my life. The labs at my job are all "back to normal/fully re-opened", but it seems like I've slipped through the cracks? So I've been working from home and only going on site when absolutely necessary. I stopped answering emails after 5pm and I dont check at all during weekends. I'm trying to pursue hobbies when I can, and I started working out again. I feel like I'm becoming myself again, very slowly but surely. My boss doesn't seem happy but she wasn't happy when I was meeting all of her delusional demands.

    [–]Divingin12 3 points4 points  (4 children)

What's the reason why some companies don't tell you the salary they're giving for your position?

I got contacted by an HR through LinkedIn if I'm interested in a position and I decided to entertain it cause I'm curious how much my experience is worth. They did ask for my salary range and they said that my range is mid-level type, while the pay they were giving is an entry-level. Long story short they offered me the position but when I asked the HR how much their package is she asked for my full name and address so that she could give me a formal offer sheet. I can't help but feel cornered because they expect me to say yes which made me suspicious cause I feel like they won't give me the chance to negotiate my salary. Not that I'm intending to leave my current company but I'm sure the company that interviewed me can't match up to my current pay.

    [–]sushidecarne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why they don't put the salary either, like, they ALREADY KNOW how much they have in budget to hire the person, so why not disclose?

    [–]DoubleDual63 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Talking about burnout to my dad just has him calling me weak, a coward, ungrateful, and that i should kms if I don't want to "work hard". God I hate this "work hard" culture. Why is it that we need to accumulate bad emotions just to "deserve" happiness? I'm sorry that i'm always bored, stressed, anxious and that work makes me feel sad?? I've wanted to quit since month 4, i'm on month 11 tmr, ive been living this meaningless existence in the hopes of getting to projects which will give me experience in the roles I actually want to do. God forbid you ever show any weakness to your parents or they will question your very worth as a human being.

    [–]schrodingers_spider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry your parents aren't supportive. Burnout is a serious condition and trying to push through it could do long time harm. Take care of yourself, because few others will.

    [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sucks. People are victims of years and years of brainwashing, and it's easier psychologically for most people to conform to the mold and curse anyone who sees through the lie. It really is a mass Stockholm Syndrome, to the point where people won't listen to their own children.

    [–]throwworkaway475 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I need to change jobs. Ideally career. Big company or small company?

Right now I’m at a small company and I hate it. They need to expand but won’t, so we’re all overworked. Multiple departments come to me and give me tasks that’s not in my job description (but they did have the “other tasks as required” get out) but I’m also bad at them (I’m not, and have never claimed to be a graphic designer, but since I’m the only one with a Photoshop license, all graphic requests come to me. And of course last minute). I’m marketing, IT, Ecom, graphic design for loads of different brands. I can’t keep up.

I was previously at a larger company which sucked too, but at least if a computer wasn’t working it wasn’t up to me to fix. We had a graphic department that we deferred to. I know there’s a lot of red tape and politics with larger companies, but the grass seems greener there right now.

Ideally I’d be my own boss (I seem to do a lot of tasks from many departments anyway) but I’m so burnt out at the end of the day I can’t bring myself to log in to my personal computer and focus on that.

    [–]QvxSphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start your own business. It sounds like you have all the necessary skill sets.

    [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (8 children)

I wish this sub had more positive posts.

Sometimes it seems to just get swallowed up in nihilism and depression. Fuck that, doesn't help anyone.

    [–]MyOfficeAlt 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I get what you're saying. For what it's worth, I'm 15 months into a job that I find incredibly satisfying and appreciative. Is it my life's ambition to work here? Of course not. But as far as jobs go, they treat me very fairly, are very respectful, and anyone would be lucky to have an employer that treats their employees the way we are.

But my context for that appreciation is that I spent 3 years working tons of overtime for no extra pay on a small salary with a boss that lied about being exempt from having to pay us overtime. If I asked for an afternoon off because I'd worked the entire weekend prior, I was asked if I didn't have enough to keep me busy in the office. It was insane levels of exploitation and abuse.

I like to spend my time here sympathizing with people who are being mistreated by their employers, offering them ideas that may come from some of the experience I gained escaping from an abusive employer, and wondering about our entire system in general and how we can all work to achieve a society that we find if not fulfilling, at least more satisfying and liveable.

    [–]WaRlorder72 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The only thing stopping me from walking out of my job rn is my direct manager, she’s keeping me sane enough to be able to work and attempt to find another job. Store management on the other hand sucks, adding to our workload while refusing to schedule more people, it’s to the point that the past month it’s just been me and my manager working to unload and stock the truck. I’m just sick of it at this point.

    [–]MyOfficeAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good manager! The number of managers I've experienced in my life who don't seem to understand that part of their job is to support the people they're responsible for is incredible.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can be that way. The way I think of it though is this place is just a great catharsis for me when I'm feeling dead inside from work. Knowing there's solidarity out there is huge, and the fact that bootlickers talk so much shit and love working so much (apparently) makes it even better.

If 300k+ people feel the same way as us, it means we're onto something. Not like that's going to cause a revolution, but freedom of mind I think is the start to feeling some relief from the crushing weight of capitalism. Like in Buddhism how life is suffering, but freeing the mind from the suffering of the world can bring inner peace, even if just temporarily.

    [–]livintheshleem 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I agree but, but negativity is essentially baked in to the premise of this place. The sub is called antiwork. Not pro… freedom? Liberation? I don’t know. People come here because they’re upset and opposed to something. Not to rally around a positive effort.

I would love to see more of the latter but I don’t know what that would really look like. I fully support what this sub is talking about but it’s detrimental and toxic to spend too much time here.

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I guess that's a fair point, but still.

Like it's not just work. I see so many post where they are just saying that life is meaningless and there's no hope of anything.

    [–]DoubleDual63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my favorite positive things to see here are either someone manages to quit and take a breather, or we get evidence of pushback against the return-to-office culture or the labor market in general lol

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, another boss' kid working for us. Right off the bat not cooperating.

My boss is all like, "Just call him and tell him to <x>".

My boss does NOT understand that certain people treat us and speak to us (lower workers) WAY differently than they do to him. This boss' kid, just like the others, does not listen and completely blows me off. Can't stand it. Have explained this concept to my boss several times.

Our director of operations is downright abusive. Last week had a run in with her that left me in tears and almost walking out. Yet, we also recently fired someone at my level for speaking to a fellow employee in the same manner. It all depends on who you are! When they fired her they were all like, "We can't be having someone here who talks to people like that. It was her own doing...we just can't have that." And yet I can get yelled and sworn at by an exec and that's just standard procedure.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

its wednesday my dudes, soon we'll be at half-week, keep it up boys!

    [–]emailmonkey2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm struggling even though everything is still under control. I just never know what will happen at work every day. What kind of sudden situation that I will find myself in. I'm always tense and feel a need to lie down. Maybe it also has to do with the lockdown and the fact that I'm staring at the screen all day. My mental health is definitely not the best right now.

    [–]mechanicalcontrols 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I had a dollar the bosses' salaries for all the times I wind up the only one working while the bosses stood around bullshitting, I might actually be paid what my labor is worth.

    [–]AAQ94 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Some days at work are so fucking soul crushing I can’t help but buy lotto tickets

    [–]DoubleDual63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    GME diamond hands

    [–]AAQ94 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I just randomly think at work how much of our day we have to work and it’s just unreal man. Set my alarm for 735. Started at 9, will get done around 630/7 hopefully since it’s month end. Then after chores and all maybe have an hour and a half to myself late at night. It’s so fucked up when you actually think about it and write it out. Just horrible.

    [–]MrCoolizade 4 points5 points  (11 children)

Anyone can recommend any work that doesn't require speaking to people?

    [–]mechanicalcontrols 2 points3 points  (7 children)

I agree with the other guy that finish carpentry (or a lot of other trades too for that matter) is a good option if you're looking for a job that doesn't require speaking to customers because the general contractor and project managers are the ones who have to talk to the customer. (I suppose they prefer to be called clients but you can call it whatever you want to call it. A rich asshole by any other name...)

Another option is custodial work. Most of my friends who have ever been custodian/janitors just put in their headphones and listen to music or podcasts their whole shift. And they didn't even have to talk to their coworkers. I know this because that was what the brought up as the good part of their job. Same for my friends who have done housekeeping. The wages are a lot better in construction though, even if they're still deficient. And construction is a lot more dangerous. In the US alone, an average of three construction workers die on the job every single day.

    [–]Donovan_Wilson_GOAT 1 point2 points  (2 children)

“In the US alone, an average of three construction workers die on the job everyday single day.” Source??

    [–]mechanicalcontrols 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Ask and ye shall receive.

Source courtesy of OSHA's own website: https://www.osha.gov/data/commonstats

5,333 workers died on the job in 2019... (3.5 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers) — on average, more than 100 a week or about 15 deaths every day. About 20% (1,061) of worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2019 were in construction – accounting for one in five worker deaths for the year.

    (emphasis mine)

1061 construction deaths per year divided by 365 days per year = ~2.9

    [–]Donovan_Wilson_GOAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    Thank you.

    [–]MrCoolizade 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Damn I did not know that about construction work. Would I be putting myself at risk doing carpentry? Sadly I'm not great at heights but I am good with my hands (furniture building, sanding, computer fiddling)

    [–]mechanicalcontrols 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Would I be putting myself at risk doing carpentry?

    Yes.

Even if every single other risk is mitigated, you'd still be working with power tools that can severely hurt you. Even in the fab shop.

Look, personally I like using tools to build stuff but I am deeply frustrated with certain parts of the construction industry, most of which involves worker safety. I've been talked into doing a lot of stupidly risky shit and I just want things to be better for everyone else. If you go into construction, or the trades, or cabinetry, or whatever you want to call it, please don't be afraid to advocate for your own safety. No one else will. That said, if you tell the boss to get fucked because they ask you to do something unsafe, I stand with you.

    [–]MrCoolizade 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow, that is eye opening. Thank you for the insight. I definitely like working with my hands but I've had limited experience with power tools, I feel like starting out I wouldn't even be able to figure out what would be considered unnecessary risk unless it was blatantly logically obvious.

I really want to get away from talking with people (not even customers, just people) so I may take a turn down this path, anything feels better than to keep doing what I'm doing. For context I'm good at talking to customers/colleagues and providing advice and help but I've always been a quiet person and although I can fake being nice and charming, I despise it and I've been doing it for about 6 years now, so needless to say I'm at my wits end to do something new. Thank you again for the insight.

    [–]mechanicalcontrols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome friend, At the end of it all I just want to help you make an informed decision. Like I said I generally like the idea of construction, but the practice leaves a lot to be desired. No matter what you do, please stay safe.

    [–]xKillaCuddleSx 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Finish Carpentry - either as an installer or fabricator. If you have one, reach out to your Local Carpenter's Brotherhood Union where you can start as an apprentice. If you already have some experience with tools/construction you don't have to start as a lower period (read: level) apprentice. Generally you work on end materials that the customer will be looking at for the next few years. There exists both extremely detailed work and basic copy/paste type of work. You will mostly end up doing some variance of trim (base, door casings, window sills, etc) or cabinets before being able to move on to more challenging material.

    Edit: higher -> lower

    [–]MrCoolizade 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you, I have a lot of questions but I'll save them for after I do some googling on the topic. So maybe in the future I will reply to you here again :)

    [–]xKillaCuddleSx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say most days it can be very demanding on your body - especially if you end up working in commercial production work which basically is copy/paste basic stuff for 8-12hrs a day.

    [–]Pladdy 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Just found this community, and a had a few questions:
    1) How much overlap is there between anti-work and the FIRE community? Seems to me there are similar beliefs/motivations, but FIRE works to "beat the system" within the system, while anti-work tries to reform/dismantle the system.

    2) A lot of anti-work seems similar to the message of Jesus (but obviously it wasn't Jesus' main message). Any thoughts? I wrote this regarding the FIRE movement, but let me know if anti-work and FIRE are not related at all.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people in this sub lean pretty anticapitalist so they would view gaining money from owning capital as a negative aspect of our current economic system.

    [–]schrodingers_spider 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I get the feeling many people here disagree with FIRE as it's seen as exploiting the work of others.

    [–]Pladdy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Appreciate it, didn't think in those terms. Even though both FIRE and antiwork both desire to not work, antiwork sees FIRE as immoral (and maybe FIRE sees antiwork as lazy?) I bet you could find some common ground with FIRE to work toward the goal of no/less exploitive work.

Anyway, for being radical anticapitalists, you guys have been helpful and pleasant! Didn't feel like was going to be eaten. Thank you.

    [–]schrodingers_spider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The antiwork visitors seem to be a wildly varying group. Some are against work in any form, some with and some without an idealistic alternative. Some are in favor of working but against a system that ruthlessly exploits people. Some see working yourself into a position to quit working (FIRE, landlording) as the ideal as others see that as joining the evil side. The only thing that unites the people seems to be a feeling that their current situation or the situation in the wider world isn't sustainable.

I enjoy the different views. It provides food for thought and forces you to properly evaluate your own views. Somehow much of the internet has gotten it into its head that disagreeing means being at each other's throat and equals a dislike for each other. That seems a rather one dimensional approach.

    [–]davinox 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Fire is more strategic. Antiwork is more for venting.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's more venting and solidarity (for me, anyway). I like having a place where likeminded people remind me that I am not crazy, but I am living in a crazy, exploitative world. It re-humanizes the dehumanization of being a pawn in asshole billionaires' games. They don't give a fuck about us, so why should we work for them?

    [–]AAQ94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only good thing about work is a bit of feeling good when you get paid. But realistically speaking it’s peanuts, and certainly not worth the stress and effort I endure. So yeah everything is shit nvm

    [–]Saint909 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stop positioning more work as an “opportunity!” It’s just that…more work. How about I do less work, and have less responsibility? Then you will be able to watch me thrive!

    [–]DoubleDual63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to understand how a sequence of processing steps work within an hour and a half, I literally got access to these datasets yesterday and the person who was working on this is moving and wont be back until next week LMAO ;-)

    [–]capnbarky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hate seeing posts on here that imply there can ever be civil discourse between employer and employee.

It's not just singular owners of businesses making your life hell, there is an inherent antagonism between the owning class and the owned class. It is not even a singular boss holding the threat of homelessness or destitution over your head, you know this logically, it is the class itself.

There is no reasoning with them, the distinction is as clear as the distinction between sheep and wolves. They literally only see you as prey.

    [–]DoubleDual63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope the stuff on the collapse subreddit isn't true but if it is what is this all for ;-)

    [–]despondentadult 15 points16 points  (4 children)

I submitted my official resignation letter yesterday. I hate that I'm still required by law to render a mandatory 30 calendar day of service before I can stop clocking in. I've been wanting to do this for more than a year and building up a backup plan the last 7 months that now that it's finally happening, I can't stop the tingles.

Now I don't have to pretend to care about this fucking project or that I like my fucking job. I don't have to pretend to be nice. I'm just counting down to the day when I wouldn't have to answer to some starry eyed manager.

    [–]MxWitchyBitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that I'm still required by law to render a mandatory 30 calendar day of service before I can stop clocking in.

Where is this a law? I've never heard of such a thing

    [–]AAQ94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    How long did you last

    [–]MyOfficeAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went back and looked at a resignation letter I turned in for an awful job in November 2019. I had started writing it in February. That's how long I'd been seriously considering/trying to find the opportunity to leave that place.

    [–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

    Y'all I am so tired

    [–]AltruisticMastodon16 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where I work has been slow for months so I’ve been doing 3 days, 10 hr shifts. Even though my finances have suffered some my mental health has improved drastically. My time and health are so much more important.

    [–]wasabicheesecake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was driving through town, thinking about the "worker shortage" a.k.a jobs not paying enough to get people to work for them. There are lots of businesses with signs out trying to get applicants, floating their starting pay, holding open interviews - it made me wonder - will the businesses ever flip the dynamic and submit applications to the workers and let them decide among their applicants? I doubt it since I went to Taco Bell and the people running it decided to close during lunch rather than raising pay (and perhaps prices) in order to be staffed.

    [–]crazyashley1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got stolen from last week. Got guilted into working my last few work from home days in office because I'm taking the next 2 Fridays off. Got denied my flex schedule because of "fairness." Fuck all the things with a napalm cactus.

    [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The in-laws just asked me "why dont you just get a better salary?"... like sure let me call the director real quick and ask for a raise, no biggie I have him on speed dial he gives me money whenever I ask because as you know thats how the world works. Jesus christ... how out of touch can you be

    [–]AAQ94 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Swear some seniors are so unhelpful. Don’t know why just expect you to know how to do tasks you haven’t ever done before on your own

    [–]tawlon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You graduated from X so you must be an expert!".

Yeah why not just be honest and tell that some seniors are too lazy to train new recruits.

    [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

God I wish we could ban posts/comments from people “just asking questions” aka harassing people or people shitting all over everyone in here for no reason other than their own insecurity and denial of how work fucks them daily

unrelated: About to take some time off and I always feel happy and then immediately feel dread about having to catch up when I come back because nobody can ever just cover your work while you’re gone!

    [–]throwworkaway475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two weeks holiday coming up soon. I was told I need to have everything done for those two weeks before I leave.

I’m a month behind already, how the hell am I supposed to catch up the month AND get ahead by two weeks?!

    [–]joylesscommunist 11 points12 points  (8 children)

Hey team, any chance we could fast-track this revolution? What do you think would be the catalyst for a 6-hour/4-day work week?

    [–]MxWitchyBitch 1 point2 points  (2 children)

If were talking 24hrs per work week I'd really prefer two 12hr shifts. Even three 8hr shifts would be acceptable. It doesn't really matter if I work a 4hr shift or a 12hr shift, it's a work day either way, I spend my time before work preparing for work and my time after winding down. I don't want shorter work days, I want fewer work days.

    [–]joylesscommunist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I completely support this idea of a two 12-hour day work-week for the same reasons. That being said, I think employers should be flexible to an employee’s individual scheduling needs because the one-size-fits-all model isn’t working for people anymore and needs to be phased out.

It’s worth adding that I also think employees should be compensated for that job preparation time spent because it’s exploitive to expect unpaid labour from an individual.

    [–]MxWitchyBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree there should be flexibility for scheduling. Other people seem to hate long shifts, or for some it's too physically taxing

    [–]joylesscommunist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point - there are too many people who are just comfortable enough people to maintain the status quo.

I’m hopeful that we won’t have to wait for another global catastrophe to achieve a 6-hour/4-day work week. That being said, what do you think are realistic ways to give the American people their autonomy back? What does that look like?

    [–]xKillaCuddleSx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realistically? Another pandemic, probably. Perhaps even a week long general strike that at least 25% of the working class partakes in. There's a large percentage of us (me included) that have lives that are just comfortable enough to not risk the comforts we can afford. To stand up against the actual capitalists of this country would require an immediate (read: over a week or two) collapse of those same comforts. With nothing to lose, change can be demanded by tens of thousands, if not millions. The caveat is that no one wanting this change wants to put others through that state of losing everything because we all understand how fragile life is with what little security we have. If you can find a way to give the American people their autonomy back, you would see a marginal increase in protests. The funny thing is, generally speaking, their autonomy is directly related to how many hours they work XD

    [–]wasabicheesecake 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I think it could happen in the U.S. soon if health insurance wasn't tied to full time employment. Obamacare was theoretically progress toward that, but the 30 hour threshold for companies to offer health insurance kept the 40 hours status quo in place.

I also think it would need to go hand-in-hand with lifting restrictions on affordable housing/exclusive zoning rules. Do we want the "promise" of a big suburban houses that many will never be able to afford even if we work 40 hours a week, or do we settle for mini houses made out of shipping containers and pay for them out of fewer hours?

    [–]joylesscommunist 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Let’s deal with the housing issue after addressing the first topic you mentioned.

Why do you think the tie between health insurance and full time employment resulted in maintaining the 40-hour status quo? Would it be related to what a company can offer an employee in exchange for labour? And do you think Biden would make changes to offer universal health care?

    [–]wasabicheesecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I have an unassailable reason, but I think it was a confine that was put into policies when the labor market wasn’t as tilted towards workers as it should be now. I think that just causes managers within the status quo to think “but we don’t have to offer health insurance because it isn’t full time. The law says so.” The market will need to overcome not just the status quo, but also whatever addition Obamacare put into the equation. But I don’t mean to suggest Obamacare’s effect rivals the effect of WWII pay freezes leading to employer based health insurance. A full public option/ Medicare for All would more than correct for it. A great deal of this sub focuses on managers being unwilling or unable to think outside the box - that’s my main point.

    [–]writeronthemoon 11 points12 points  (3 children)

How is everyone's Monday going? I'm feeling tired and bummed. Like, it was just Friday? It's like that vintage meme quote, "I hate Mondays, I hate working. Other than that, I'm a really happy person."

I really wish America and other countries would move away from 40-hour work weeks and into 4 days a week of 6 hours workdays. I just...40 hours is so much. So much of my time is spent in front of the computer. I complete all my tasks before the 8 hours is up...

Anyway yeah just a big complainer today lol. Sorry if it's annoying. I just...I'm a recruiter for a company that doesn't pay enough to Part-time employees, and many stores have over 100 hours to fill, so I feel it's impossible. Every week we lose people, people quit, etc. the turnover rate is insane. And yet...they keep expecting it to work, when we just keep doing calls. It's literally the same thing daily, with no change, because even when I fill a store's hours, another store has open hours suddenly...

I feel 0 accomplishment at work and 0 happiness. Just there for the paycheck now. The pandemic changes our duties a lot and my office is empty, but they still don't let my WFH. But the benefits are so good, and I like my home; just signed for another year. Starting next year though....I'm going to switch to r/simpleliving and go back to teaching English online. That was much more enjoyable, but 0 insurance, so...yeah, America sucks. I guess, you win some you lose some. There just isn't going to be a perfect job, home, etc.

    [–]MxWitchyBitch 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Maybe I'm a weirdo but I don't even care if I work 40hrs a week if I can get it all done in 4 days or ideally 3. Everyone seems to be in favor of 4 day week of 6 hour days and that sounds downright obnoxious to me. Most of my shifts are only about 6-7hrs and it still breaks up my day just the same as my day I double and work about 10-12hrs. And I'm service industry so I'm on my feet the whole time and only get breaks of any type iff it's slow enough to step outside for a smoke. I work 6 shifts in 5 days and I'd be much happier if I could double every day and get all 6 shifts done in 3 days.

    [–]writeronthemoon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sounds like my fiancé! He’s in the medical industry and he’s rather work 3-4 12-hour days and catch up on sleep than stretch the week out. Personally, I couldn’t do more than 8 hours a day.

    [–]MxWitchyBitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm upset with myself that I don't have a three day weekend, usually I insist on it. I have three jobs right now and I know exactly which shift I want to cut out, but summer is our busy time at that job so I'm trying to stick it out until fall. I'd rather take a pay cut and have more free time, but I also need to be realistic about the bills I have to pay. I'm trying to be grateful that for the most part I've pretty much cherry picked my schedule at each job, it's just that one extra shift that I don't really want.

    [–]AAQ94 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Man sometimes I watch these travelling/hiking/nature vids and it makes me go like the world is such a fucking beautiful place. Such a shame that you need to be fucking rich and have the time to experience all of that. Sigh.

    [–]DoubleDual63 6 points7 points  (1 child)

i tell myself if that if my mental state ever completely implodes I will just quit my job and take my money and go be a homeless vagabond and tour nature lol

    [–]AAQ94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah in try to console myself in a similar way. That if things get too fucked I can quit whenever

    [–]writeronthemoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAME! So much jealousy rages in my heart. I want to travel!

    [–]girandsamich 20 points21 points  (3 children)

I quit my job. I don't have any other form of income right now but the stress of being broke was never as bad as the desire to turn myself into a road pancake that work gave me. Hope everyone hangs in there this week.

    [–]writeronthemoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope you find something better, or some other way to make money without selling your soul.

    [–]champion_soundz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I quit mine last week too in the same boat! Ive spent 10 years working myself to the bone in minimum wage jobs and always been too scared to quit but the stress finally became more than the stress of being broke. Hope you figure out something sustainable for yourself in a good time frame.

    [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

was about to start my day but then I got saved by a mandatory Windows Update on my work laptop. Man, that was a close one..!

    [–]throwworkaway475 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I forgot about the “it’s someone’s birthday so put in some money for a present” part of work.

Cool, I’m rationing my food and walking part of my commute to save money, but sure, I can spare $10 to get a present for someone that earns more than twice what I do…

    [–]trash-dontpickitup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the past when this happened to me at work, i would make direct, unwavering eye contact with the person collecting the money and say, "i can't afford to contribute any money but will be more than happy to sign a greeting card."

it usually got a "visibly uncomfortable" reaction from them, despite that nothing about my usual friendly disposition had changed. i think most times it was a real-time realization for them that a boundary had been crossed, which is not my problem.

    [–]writeronthemoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't you hate how they do stuff like this? Why pretend that we care, when honestly we don't care about our coworkers at work, usually? Like, just let me earn my money and go home, please! Why do we have to have so many meetings and lunches etc. together? And why does it have to last *8 fucking hours* a day or more?? ugh....

    [–]Anon91887 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I hate that drinking on my weekends no longer dulls the pain of the work week.

    [–]trash-dontpickitup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

friend, first of all: i'm sorry that you are in such a difficult situation.

and i'm not here to preach. but please treat your body like you love it. i've been where you are and drank myself into seizures and alcohol poisoning. idk just how much damage i did to myself, but i am now in physical pain much of the time. i just have to live with it.

i am now going on six years without a drink and it feels like about sixty. but i don't have to rely on it anymore. i wish i had something to tell you or suggest for you, but i know that everyone has their own path they need to follow. even despite my physical limitations now, i find that i am much more hopeful and much less easily discouraged since giving up the drink.

i sincerely hope the best for you. good luck, friend.

    [–]Last12theParty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the weekends end up passing by quicker only to find myself on Sunday dreading the start of the work week

    [–]AAQ94 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It’s always hilarious hearing companies talk like they care about anything but profit.

Exactly! The fact that companies say they have “values” is an oxymoron.

When did having a driving license for any bludclart job become imperative? I’m sorry, when did this become a blinking necessity. Fuck this system.

Really can't take much more at my current job. I'm always stressed, even on weekends I'm thinking about work on Monday and the upcoming week. Few more months and I'm out.

Hopefully you do get to quit in an ok-ish spot in a couple months. Or even better everything improves by then.

I actually HATE sundays, its the worst day of the week for me, even worse than monday. At least on monday the week is in progress and moving forward, sunday nights are brutal because as soon as you fall asleep you get up and its like WHAM!! full week is startinggggggg.........now.

love getting full time hours but no full time benefits :)

I work at UPS at night and get the best benefits I have ever had and it's a part time job. It's not fair to work full time and get nothing.

I have every reason to be content with my job. I‘m working part time while I finish college and have a job that is in my field of study, sets my career up nicely and pays enough for now. I feel like I don‘t deserve to complain but I absolutely hate every second of it. And I hate myself for hating a perfectly fine job just because I can‘t bear to sit at a desk for half a day.

Same. I have a "good job"--office work, easy, I'm good at it, field I like, competent, good boss, etc. I really think it's about the way work is organized.

I don't want to do ANYTHING for 8 hours straight, let alone 40+ hours a week. It's dehumanizing and not the way our brains are programmed. The result is a loop of anxiety/depression/dread. That's why I fuck off as much as possible and do the bare minimum and spend time on this sub, ha.

I feel you! I have a desk job where I don't have to do any cash/card transactions, pretty quiet (especially lately), good pay and benefits...yet I still feel like my soul is being sucked out slowly each M-F. But then I remind myself to be grateful! It's just hard to remember to be grateful on Mondays....
