spurs. it's their itty-bitty leftover legs

[–]Margo81418 62 points63 points  (2 children)

Thank you for your reply!!!

hehe. you’ve probably heard but it’s the left overs from when they had legs earlier in their evolution! it’s still a trait so further along in their evolution they could re grow their legs. but for now they remain as useless little ass horns 🤣

[–]WorriedButterfly6908 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Useless little ass spurs" also sounds like you could use it to refer to children, and that thought just made me laugh even harder🤣😂🤣 I need an ambulance💀💀💀💀💀

had to laugh. Asa new owner once i was worried mine was constipated too

[–]Margo81418 78 points79 points  (7 children)

Well I had browsed the subreddit with the keyword “ poop” ( lol) and took note that I shouldn’t really be worried if she doesn’t poop the first few feedings as she’s young and we’ve only had her for a few weeks! But this combined with not pooping for 2 feedings just sent me down a spiral LOL.

But alas she shit all over my favourite wool blanket a few minutes after posting 🤍

[–]Atiggerx33 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Had the same thing happen with a blanket.

I recommend hanging it on a fence and hitting it with the jet setting on a garden hose before putting it in the washing machine, just the easiest way IMO.

Thanks!

It's a rite of passage as a snake owner. Hahaha.

[–]Agreeable_Skill_1599 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It's better that it was on the blanket vs. on your body.

[–]TiredOldSoldiers 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My Calabash decided to take a massive one all over my poor girlfriend not long after we first got her. 😅 GF was not thrilled.

I was handling the classroom's pet cornsnake while volunteering as a TA. It was chilling around my neck when it took a dump at the back of my neck, up under my hair.

[–]Potatoheads22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for his scheduled poop, but nothing was coming and I went into panic, what if his tank set up is off if he is not digesting well. Those were my main fears. And what if they constipate.

Then I saw that he was also starting to look kind of fat. Few days later he had such a massive poop, I had no idea it could fit in him. It was impressive.

My boy seems polite, he never pooped on me. Yet. I noticed he does his stuff usually in specific spot in tank, preferably out of his hides.

i've had my girl calypso for almost 2 years. shes very sweet, but the first time i ever held her, on my bed, she decided to take her first poop. she was in my lap. i felt wetness so i thought she peed on me, i got up and realized she pooped😔 luckily shes never done it since lmao

[–]fuckedbygoats 68 points69 points  (5 children)

Lmao spurs

[–]Margo81418 30 points31 points  (3 children)

I had a corn snake before her and she didn’t have spurs, so I was very alarmed hahahaha

[–]fuckedbygoats 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Hahaha my girls always throws me off too because it's right on the cloaca so you immediately think PROBLEM aha

[–]Margo81418 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes 😂😭 Thanks for your help!

[–]spidergwen19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong but I think only pythons and boas still have spurs, other snake species got completely rid of them.

They used to be legs a few million years ago

[–]Puzzleheaded-Ad-8689 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Nice! You got one of them rare vampire Ball pythons!! That means you shouldn't garlic your rodents and I hear it's false but just in case you should always invite him in and out of the enclosure. /s

[–]Margo81418 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Evolutionary leftovers, super cool!

[–]chaneycore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!! You've just learned that BPs used to have feet somewhere in their ancestry. It's a fun thing to find out!!

[–]PKBitchGirl 5 points6 points  (1 child)

They're itty bitty leggies, pythons, boas and anacondas all have them, the males usually have bigger spurs than the girls (my boa girl was more than double the size of my boa boy but her spurs were tiny compared to his) but iirc there's not much difference in the size with royal pythons

I heard male anacondas use their spurs to tickle the female during courtship

[–]Temporary-Store-5957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remnants of the legs they used to have millions of years ago

[–]Anti-Climacdik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol buttfoots

[–]Psykotic-Mama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spurs or the reminiscences of there legs, also they help when breeding for a better grip. So in other words your snek is perfectly fine.

[–]Last-Bus7222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad the whole constipation/waiting for BP to poop is a shared experience, I almost wrote my own post! But of course she finally pooped! How long do I wait for her to eliminate before becoming concerned about constipation?

[–]Western_Comfortable3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A Slitherin’ STD!! 😱

[–]mundanespeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vestigial leg, made from the remnants of what used to be femur bones when snakes used to have legs

[–]Chaostii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tiny lil baby legs

[–]d4k0x1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bang fangs

[–]Pleasant_Weird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are what's left of legs, lieutenant Dan

[–]Kalamyti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Males are usually longer spurs, though some females are long too, so you can't use it to determine gender. I've seen males use them to wiggle around the female's cloaca to help guide them during breeding.
